Will Blonde ruin Ana De Armas’ career?

Critics, audiences, conspiracy theorists—no one seems to like Blonde. Many people feel Ana degraded herself for this role. I don’t see her getting an Oscar nomination, and I wonder if this will negatively affect her career.

by Anonymousreply 46January 25, 2023 5:47 PM

yes

by Anonymousreply 1October 1, 2022 4:01 AM

I thought she did fine. With regards to degrading herself, how? Simulating a blowjob? It was hardly at the level of brown bunny. The film itself was not great but is not showgirls level dross. I think it’s more likely it will just be sort of forgotten like My Week with Marilyn pretty much is too.

by Anonymousreply 2October 1, 2022 4:04 AM

Only if she actually gets an Oscar nomination. It goes in line with Halle Berry, having to make torture porn to be nominated / win an Oscar. And based on an exploitive fictitious account of a beloved dead superstar.

by Anonymousreply 3October 1, 2022 4:06 AM

I don’t know what the fuss is about. Blonde is rather tame by todays standards. I mean look at any Gaspard Noé film for reference. So you see a penis briefly. You saw a penis briefly in Bergman’s persona too in 1966.

by Anonymousreply 4October 1, 2022 4:09 AM

I didn’t like this movie and didn’t love Ana’s performance but I’ve seen worse things in Euphoria than Blonde.

by Anonymousreply 5October 1, 2022 4:12 AM

R2 Yeah I’m kinda tired of hearing about all the outrage concerning this movie. People are giving it more attention than it deserves. No one will be talking about it in 10 years from now.

by Anonymousreply 6October 1, 2022 4:14 AM

Ana’s performance wasn’t bad, I liked her especially in the first half. My issue is all she has to do is cry and suffer onscreen. That got old fast. Adrien Brody was MVP.

by Anonymousreply 7October 1, 2022 4:16 AM

Some stuff was messed up but based on the online outrage I was expecting a lot worse. Or maybe I watch too much fucked up tv and movies.

by Anonymousreply 8October 1, 2022 4:18 AM

Well if I can be forgiven for comparing it to mulholland drive, both films have a similar theme fundamentally, the idea of the nightmare beneath the surface. Mulholland has so much rewatch ability but this film blonde is just unrelentingly depressing.

by Anonymousreply 9October 1, 2022 4:21 AM

R8 Same. I was expecting it to be one of the most revolting and disturbing movies I’ve ever seen. I mostly found it hollow and forgettable, barring a few good sequences.

by Anonymousreply 10October 1, 2022 4:22 AM

Her attempt to suppress her Spanish accent was a laughable failure. I didn't fing her performance noteworthy.

by Anonymousreply 11October 1, 2022 4:23 AM

For example aside from the quick rape scene the most fucked up bit was the very long shot of her giving JFK a blowjob because of how degrading it was. The fetus/abortion stuff was weird too. Other than those it was her just being weepy with neat recreations of iconic Monroe scenes often set in slow motion. Wasnt completely terrible but it wasn't good. Definitely won't get Oscar noms.

by Anonymousreply 12October 1, 2022 4:27 AM

She’ll be fine. She was terrific in her part of the new James Bond movie. The outrage is bullshit. Gay guys will see her as iconic and straight guys will jerk off to her sex scene.

I could see her being hated by women, but she’ll have a long career in high-profile male-centered movies. She was never gonna be Katherine Heigl anyway.

by Anonymousreply 13October 1, 2022 4:31 AM

[quote] Other than those it was her just being weepy with neat recreations of iconic Monroe scenes often set in slow motion.

Aren’t all biopics like that these days. Jackie, Seberg and Spencer…

by Anonymousreply 14October 1, 2022 4:31 AM

R14. Jackie is the only good one. I hated Spencer.

by Anonymousreply 15October 1, 2022 4:32 AM

She did a good job. No one is criticizing her acting. No one said She ruined the movie, etc. It is t he Director's POV, and the story itself getting fried. The way he interpreted Marilyn and her life. His perspective. He is an asshole. Ask if his career will be ruined.

by Anonymousreply 16October 1, 2022 4:32 AM

R7 yeah she was good in many scenes and overall acted quite well in capturing at least some of Marilyn's essence but it was one note. All she got to do was play her completely sad through most of the film. But I suppose her being happy or in a good state of mind didn't contribute to aim of the movie. The shots and way it was shot were often nice..It's just hard and monotonous to sit through nearly 3 hours of that.

by Anonymousreply 17October 1, 2022 4:32 AM

R16 Dominik is an ass and his comments about Marilyn were awful. No arguments there.

by Anonymousreply 18October 1, 2022 4:33 AM

Dominik doesn’t even work that prolific so that’s why I didn’t ask if his career will be ruined. He’ll probably have a tougher time making movies but he’s a man, his career won’t be ruined.

by Anonymousreply 19October 1, 2022 4:34 AM

I'd rather remember Marilyn with all the joy and sex appeal and talent she brought to her films. When she finally showed up and acted on film, she was magic, and that magic lasted all these years.

by Anonymousreply 20October 1, 2022 4:35 AM

I thought Poppy Montgomery did a better job in the 2001 made for television film adaption of Blonde. I enjoyed that movie overall and I know some people who like Joyce’s book. It’s unfortunate Dominik’s version had to end up like this because there was potential for a better film.

by Anonymousreply 21October 1, 2022 4:37 AM

I would hate to be famous then die and have everybody project their traumas onto me or use me as a symbol to satisfy their narrative.

by Anonymousreply 22October 1, 2022 4:37 AM

So tired of the endless veneration for this fat dead drug addict. Move on.

by Anonymousreply 23October 1, 2022 4:37 AM

R23 I like Marilyn but ngl I’m sick of hearing about her. There’s other Old Hollywood actresses who were beautiful, charismatic, and had tragic lives. I’m only sorry that Marilyn has been exploited so much, but I wish we could move on from her and shine on a spotlight on other Old Hollywood actresses once and for all.

by Anonymousreply 24October 1, 2022 4:39 AM

Here's hoping OP🤞🤞🤞

by Anonymousreply 25October 1, 2022 4:42 AM

[quote] There’s other Old Hollywood actresses who were beautiful, charismatic, and had tragic lives.

But they don’t have the same universal recognition unfortunately. We know Hollywood goes into overkill when something or someone proves profitable.

by Anonymousreply 26October 1, 2022 4:48 AM

I'm sure Ana's career will be ok. From what I am reading about it, people think the movie was unnecessary, and repulsive. They don't like seeing Marilyn's memory getting raped all over again, and again, and again. Seriously how many more of these do we need?

by Anonymousreply 27October 1, 2022 4:52 AM

R26 Marilyn was special and is still remembered for a reason. I know it’s not her fault but it’s frustrating how people never pay attention other Old Hollywood actresses who were around during her heyday.

by Anonymousreply 28October 1, 2022 4:52 AM

She’ll be fine, the script is getting maligned more so than her performance.

by Anonymousreply 29October 1, 2022 4:54 AM

I still think a better movie could be made about Jayne Mansfield and her doomed career, but I have no idea who even could recreate the outrageous Mansfield oeuvre.

by Anonymousreply 30October 1, 2022 6:17 AM

R16 I agree. I haven't seen it yet, but from what I heard, no actress could have saved the movie. When someone said upthread, "a beloved celebrity..." or similar: Marilyn isn't the only one. JFK has almost saint status in the US and Europe, and along comes this movie, alleging he is a rapist. This doesn't go down well. Not even the GOP fanboys love this, having long claimed JFK as an idol of their own. JFK is supposed to be the victim in a conspiracy, not a perpetrator.

by Anonymousreply 31October 1, 2022 6:49 AM

Didn't De Armas have a bomb with that Ben Affleck movie too. 2 bombs in a row doesn't do a career good.

by Anonymousreply 32October 1, 2022 7:43 AM

"Well if I can be forgiven for comparing it to mulholland drive"

No, R9, that is unforgiveable.

by Anonymousreply 33October 1, 2022 8:02 AM

ANOTHER film about Marilyn.

Actress 'embodies' Marilyn. Feels the spirit of Monroe was watching over her during filming. "I felt an affinity with her". "This is her untold story".

Rinse and repeat.

by Anonymousreply 34October 1, 2022 8:04 AM

She’s just another starlet who will not have much to do in the US and UK when she starts to show signs of aging.

by Anonymousreply 35October 1, 2022 3:30 PM

[quote]r22 I would hate to be famous then die and have everybody project their traumas onto me or use me as a symbol to satisfy their narrative.

They’d start doing that while you were still alive. It’s the nature of stardom.

by Anonymousreply 36October 1, 2022 3:58 PM

Why would she be hated by women, R13? I've generally found women prefer women considerably more than men.

by Anonymousreply 37October 1, 2022 4:19 PM

Yeah, R37. Put a group of women together and they’ll all get along. Especially with the good looking young ones that men still want to have sex with.

by Anonymousreply 38October 1, 2022 5:08 PM

Male widowers do worse than female ones, because they haven’t built up outside relationships and support systems. Women can carry on alone because as a rule they’ve always had an emotional life outside their marriages.

by Anonymousreply 39October 1, 2022 8:11 PM

No, that's an ignorant generalisation, R38.

by Anonymousreply 40October 1, 2022 9:16 PM

Ana will be fine. This movie is a conversation piece. It’s doing well on Netflix and EVERYONE is talking about it.

And I think it also answers the question as to whether or not she can act. She’s got it. I think she’ll get more meatier Oscar bait roles after this.

by Anonymousreply 41October 1, 2022 10:09 PM

I guess I was wrong. She got an Oscar nomination out of it.

by Anonymousreply 42January 25, 2023 9:40 AM

Which I strongly disagree with. Oscar noms are a joke these days.

by Anonymousreply 43January 25, 2023 10:02 AM

Hurt her career? I don’t think receiving an Oscar nomination for the role will hurt her career.

by Anonymousreply 44January 25, 2023 10:08 AM

This was posted back in September, r44.

by Anonymousreply 45January 25, 2023 11:19 AM

R39, Right, but wrong explanation. Widows do better in general because of already having been the cook, bottle-washer, and decision-maker, from purchases to decor to finances to vacations. And oftentimes primary parent.

Widowers, OTOH, seem more lost in their previous dependence.
