Clue (1985)
Based on the classic board game Cluedo.
Directed by Jonathan Lynn
Written by Lynn and Jonathan Landis
Starring Eileen Brennan, Coleen Camp, Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, Michael McKean, Martin Mull, Lee Ving, and Lesley Ann Warren.
At times camp, at other times serious, Clue is a cult classic along the lines of Rocky Horror, Labyrinth, and Office Space.

What is your favorite ending?
I like the "real" ending the best.

I've never seen it but I'd like to to. Speaking of puzzle films, I saw The Last of Sheila for the first time last week. It was written by Stephen Sondheim and Anthony Perkins.

R9 I agree in some ways. The cast is good, but none are weak links (even Colleen Camp does well). Maybe Martin Mull, but he plays the dimwitted Colonel Mustard well. Mull was the least known of the suspects and Curry.
So, who is the weakest link?

Compared to Murder by Death, Clue was awful--but even judged on it's own merit, it's awful.

It's one of those movies like Hocus Pocus where most of the people who saw it at the time panned it or thought it was mediocre, but has been appreciated by kids who saw it on VHS and cable for years. These days, every movie has at least a tiny cult fanbase. Some movies just need a little longer to find their audience and home video/TV have helped do that for a lot of movies.

At least, her band was popular. But she's barely noticed in this darkly-lit cameo.

It’s true that it was panned at the time, but it’s not repeated airings alone that made it a classic. I saw it at the theater as a six year old baby gay and was obsessed in a way that should’ve probably concerned my parents. When it started growing in popularity, I was shocked that so many others felt similarly. It just has some strange quality to it that feels both fun and comforting.

R27 You are right. She is so funny. She is my favorite character in the movie, but Lesley Ann Warren and Tim Curry steal the show. I do not believe there to be a weak link in the six suspects and Curry.
R30 Which scene is that?!

I love this movie. It’s an insult to compare it to that piece of trash Hocus Pocus. It’s not as good as Rocky Horror (which actually was a sleeper hit), but Labyrinth is an appropriate comparison.

I loved that s movie as a kid and still do. This was a favorite of my whole family and one of the rare movies we'd watch together at least once a year.
I'm pretty sure we recreated the singing telegram scene at recess more than once. I also liked to say you ain't just whistling Dixie because of this movie. I was surprised to later learn Madeline Khan wasn't Asian.

The cast is fantastic, likewise the costumes and sets. There never seems to be enough of a movie going on somehow.
It's still better than the execrable Murder by Death which save for the last five minutes never rises above the crack about number two.

It was on HBO every freaking day in the late 80s. All of us GenX latchkey kids watched it repeatedly, and that's where the cult nostalgia comes from. It's silly and satirical in equal measure, just hitting the GenX sense of humor's sweet spot.

“Our LIVES are in danger, ya beatnik!”
A longtime family favorite. We saw the “real” ending in the theater. My parents owned a video store and my little sister watched this movie something like 100 times between the ages of 10 and 12. I remember my mom complaining that no one could ever rent it because the store’s one copy was always at our house.

R70 If you watch all endings on DVD, it would be A,B, and C. The C ending is the "real" ending. However, ending A and B are fun.
On the DVD you can pick an ending at random or pick to watch all three endings. I like to pick them at random sometimes.

It's always fun seeing elegantly dressed people being silly. The movie is also very atmospheric, and the tension heightens the comedic moments. The singing telegram scene had me crying with laughter as a kid. It's a perfect ensemble cast.

I watched this again tonight, in Martin Mull's honor. This exchange with Tim Curry is my favorite part of the movie:

I think this is one of those that films that if you saw it at the right time? You loved it. But if you were too old or too young it was silly or forgettable.
At some point in my middle grade years we got a copy of it on VHS and my sisters and I watched it over and over and over. We thought it was the funniest thing ever and we knew just about every line. We still quote it to each other today.
So for me the film is an all time favorite.

All my friends in school loved this movie and I just didn’t get it. My mother took me to any movie she wanted to see so, I saw The Official Story, My Beautiful Laundrette, and Toña machetes around this time at age 12 and movies like Clue were stupid to me. I’ve since removed the stick out of my ass and can appreciate dumb movies. Alas, Clue is not one of them. Love Murder by Death, though!
