Clue (1985)

Based on the classic board game Cluedo.

Directed by Jonathan Lynn

Written by Lynn and Jonathan Landis

Starring Eileen Brennan, Coleen Camp, Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, Michael McKean, Martin Mull, Lee Ving, and Lesley Ann Warren.

At times camp, at other times serious, Clue is a cult classic along the lines of Rocky Horror, Labyrinth, and Office Space.

I LOVE Lesley Ann Warren in this

by Anonymousreply 1September 30, 2022 8:28 PM

What is your favorite ending?

I like the "real" ending the best.

by Anonymousreply 2September 30, 2022 8:28 PM

It was mediocre at best.

by Anonymousreply 3September 30, 2022 8:30 PM

I've never seen it but I'd like to to. Speaking of puzzle films, I saw The Last of Sheila for the first time last week. It was written by Stephen Sondheim and Anthony Perkins.

by Anonymousreply 4September 30, 2022 8:30 PM

R3 How is it mediocre? I love this movie.

by Anonymousreply 5September 30, 2022 8:31 PM

"Flames...on the side of my face."

Classic

R5 , I thought it was just mediocre. You can have high praise, which is fine - we all are different.

by Anonymousreply 7September 30, 2022 8:34 PM

R7 fair enough

by Anonymousreply 8September 30, 2022 8:45 PM

I enjoyed it quite much, but honestly, with all those heavy hitters, I wanted more from it all the way along.

by Anonymousreply 9September 30, 2022 8:51 PM

That “flames on the side of my face” clip is not funny at all

by Anonymousreply 10September 30, 2022 8:55 PM

R9 I agree in some ways. The cast is good, but none are weak links (even Colleen Camp does well). Maybe Martin Mull, but he plays the dimwitted Colonel Mustard well. Mull was the least known of the suspects and Curry.

So, who is the weakest link?

by Anonymousreply 11September 30, 2022 8:56 PM

Was it a big office hit upon release or did it gather its cult appreciation over the years?

by Anonymousreply 12September 30, 2022 9:19 PM

Great cast but unfunny film. Murder by Death is superior.

by Anonymousreply 13September 30, 2022 9:22 PM

R12 It gather cult following on VHS rentals and TV airings.

by Anonymousreply 14September 30, 2022 9:28 PM

r13, watched years ago, LOVED when Peter Falk snapped and "broke character"

by Anonymousreply 15September 30, 2022 9:29 PM

Compared to Murder by Death, Clue was awful--but even judged on it's own merit, it's awful.

by Anonymousreply 16September 30, 2022 9:42 PM

It's one of those movies like Hocus Pocus where most of the people who saw it at the time panned it or thought it was mediocre, but has been appreciated by kids who saw it on VHS and cable for years. These days, every movie has at least a tiny cult fanbase. Some movies just need a little longer to find their audience and home video/TV have helped do that for a lot of movies.

by Anonymousreply 17September 30, 2022 9:51 PM

RUNS DOWN THE HALL!!!!

Her.

by Anonymousreply 19September 30, 2022 10:55 PM

R19 why her?

by Anonymousreply 20October 2, 2022 12:06 AM

R19 You know she was a huge star of the MTV Generation, right?

At least, her band was popular. But she's barely noticed in this darkly-lit cameo.

by Anonymousreply 21October 2, 2022 12:12 AM

Isnt that Jane Wiedlan from the Go-Gos ?

by Anonymousreply 22October 2, 2022 12:12 AM

This is one of my favorite films ever! Hardly anyone seems to have seen it though. It has so many quotable lines.

by Anonymousreply 23October 2, 2022 12:14 AM

Cast ranking:

Tim Curry

Lesley Ann Warren

Michael McKean

Madeline Kahn

No. Really? I had no clue.

It’s true that it was panned at the time, but it’s not repeated airings alone that made it a classic. I saw it at the theater as a six year old baby gay and was obsessed in a way that should’ve probably concerned my parents. When it started growing in popularity, I was shocked that so many others felt similarly. It just has some strange quality to it that feels both fun and comforting.

by Anonymousreply 26October 2, 2022 12:37 AM

Eileen’s scream alone entitles her to higher ranking than #6, R24.

This movie is not mediocre

by Anonymousreply 28October 2, 2022 12:47 AM

Completely awful. Not in the same Universe as the iconic RHPS.

by Anonymousreply 29October 2, 2022 12:50 AM

Eileen Brennan is in my favorite scenes, has me falling out laughing

I find the music distracting, obnoxiously loud

by Anonymousreply 30October 2, 2022 12:54 AM

R27 You are right. She is so funny. She is my favorite character in the movie, but Lesley Ann Warren and Tim Curry steal the show. I do not believe there to be a weak link in the six suspects and Curry.

R30 Which scene is that?!

by Anonymousreply 31October 2, 2022 1:09 AM

I love this movie. It’s an insult to compare it to that piece of trash Hocus Pocus. It’s not as good as Rocky Horror (which actually was a sleeper hit), but Labyrinth is an appropriate comparison.

by Anonymousreply 32October 2, 2022 1:16 AM

If I were the killer, I would kill YOU NEXT!

by Anonymousreply 33October 2, 2022 1:23 AM

by Anonymousreply 43October 2, 2022 1:31 AM

I loved that s movie as a kid and still do. This was a favorite of my whole family and one of the rare movies we'd watch together at least once a year.

I'm pretty sure we recreated the singing telegram scene at recess more than once. I also liked to say you ain't just whistling Dixie because of this movie. I was surprised to later learn Madeline Khan wasn't Asian.

by Anonymousreply 44October 2, 2022 1:41 AM

r2, yes, the final, "real" answer is the best one.

by Anonymousreply 45October 2, 2022 1:43 AM

And my, this soup's delicious!

by Anonymousreply 46October 2, 2022 2:29 AM

The cast is fantastic, likewise the costumes and sets. There never seems to be enough of a movie going on somehow.

It's still better than the execrable Murder by Death which save for the last five minutes never rises above the crack about number two.

by Anonymousreply 47October 2, 2022 2:32 AM

Awful movie

by Anonymousreply 48October 2, 2022 2:33 AM

I'm going to go home and sleep with my wife.

by Anonymousreply 49October 2, 2022 3:26 AM

The "Clue" set was later used in "Dynasty", as the interior of the Carlton Hotel.

And for the record: I love the movie, and everyone in it. My family also watched it together, R44.

by Anonymousreply 53October 2, 2022 4:01 AM

R53 And Lesley Ann Warren was set to play Mrs. White. When she swapped parts, they brought in Madeline Kahn for Mrs. White, and the two only had days to prepare.

by Anonymousreply 54October 2, 2022 4:03 AM

Could have/should have been much better than it was given the talent involved, particularly Kahn, Brennan and Warren.

by Anonymousreply 55October 2, 2022 4:10 AM

R54 I have never heard of that!

by Anonymousreply 56October 2, 2022 4:13 AM

I saw it in the theater when I was 15 and I LOVED it. I saw ending number 3.

I think I might watch it again tomorrow, it's been a few years.

by Anonymousreply 57October 2, 2022 4:27 AM

Exactly, r55. It wanted to be Murder by Death, but...

by Anonymousreply 58October 2, 2022 4:44 AM

R54 is talking about The Golden Girls cast which debut the same year as this film.

by Anonymousreply 59October 2, 2022 5:36 AM

It was on HBO every freaking day in the late 80s. All of us GenX latchkey kids watched it repeatedly, and that's where the cult nostalgia comes from. It's silly and satirical in equal measure, just hitting the GenX sense of humor's sweet spot.

by Anonymousreply 60October 2, 2022 6:02 AM

Loved it

by Anonymousreply 61October 2, 2022 2:57 PM

A must read oral history for any fan of the film or someone genuinely trying to understand this classic.

“Our LIVES are in danger, ya beatnik!”

A longtime family favorite. We saw the “real” ending in the theater. My parents owned a video store and my little sister watched this movie something like 100 times between the ages of 10 and 12. I remember my mom complaining that no one could ever rent it because the store’s one copy was always at our house.

by Anonymousreply 69October 2, 2022 8:28 PM

Sorry, but which is the"real" ending: A, B, C, or the unreleased D?

by Anonymousreply 70October 2, 2022 8:40 PM

R70 - B

by Anonymousreply 71October 2, 2022 8:42 PM

Dinner will be ready at 7:30.

by Anonymousreply 72October 2, 2022 8:49 PM

R70 If you watch all endings on DVD, it would be A,B, and C. The C ending is the "real" ending. However, ending A and B are fun.

On the DVD you can pick an ending at random or pick to watch all three endings. I like to pick them at random sometimes.

by Anonymousreply 73October 2, 2022 8:57 PM

I came into money during the war when I lost my mommy and daddy.

by Anonymousreply 74October 2, 2022 9:01 PM

I LOVE this movie. Great cast. Great house.

by Anonymousreply 75October 2, 2022 9:14 PM

Which character are you most like?

I'd probably be like Mrs. Peacock (Eileen Brennan).

by Anonymousreply 76October 2, 2022 9:19 PM

Mrs. White and Mrs. Peacock are great. I like the dynamic new tween Mrs White and Professor Plum.

by Anonymousreply 77October 2, 2022 9:55 PM

Mrs. White was a bitch, but a fun bitch

by Anonymousreply 78October 2, 2022 10:32 PM

Should it have been a longer movie?

by Anonymousreply 79October 4, 2022 4:23 AM

It's always fun seeing elegantly dressed people being silly. The movie is also very atmospheric, and the tension heightens the comedic moments. The singing telegram scene had me crying with laughter as a kid. It's a perfect ensemble cast.

Martin Mull (Colonel Mustard) died yesterday....

by Anonymousreply 81June 29, 2024 4:25 AM

I watched this again tonight, in Martin Mull's honor. This exchange with Tim Curry is my favorite part of the movie:

"Wadsworth, are you trying to make me look stupid in front of the other guests?"

"You don't need any help from me, Sir."

by Anonymousreply 82June 29, 2024 8:40 AM

I think this is one of those that films that if you saw it at the right time? You loved it. But if you were too old or too young it was silly or forgettable.

At some point in my middle grade years we got a copy of it on VHS and my sisters and I watched it over and over and over. We thought it was the funniest thing ever and we knew just about every line. We still quote it to each other today.

So for me the film is an all time favorite.

by Anonymousreply 83June 29, 2024 8:50 AM

The writing has a lot of misses that don't hold up so well for me, but all those direct hits are worth watching it again.

by Anonymousreply 84June 29, 2024 9:03 AM

R83 My sister and I had the same experience with L'Année dernière à Marienbad. "I have never stayed so long anywhere."

by Anonymousreply 85June 29, 2024 10:02 AM

Madeline Kahn, Eileen Brennan, and Martin Mull are all gone

by Anonymousreply 86June 29, 2024 3:51 PM

All my friends in school loved this movie and I just didn’t get it. My mother took me to any movie she wanted to see so, I saw The Official Story, My Beautiful Laundrette, and Toña machetes around this time at age 12 and movies like Clue were stupid to me. I’ve since removed the stick out of my ass and can appreciate dumb movies. Alas, Clue is not one of them. Love Murder by Death, though!
