Because Graham's bill would require a doctor to determine fetal age before an abortion and threatens jail time, invasive transvaginal ultrasounds will often be necessary, physicians say.
Doctors say Graham’s abortion ban would force women to have transvaginal ultrasounds

You do know women are the root of all evil, right? It's right there in Genesis. Eve defied God and tempted Adam to join her, bringing original sin down on the human species and as punishment God decreed that she had to suffer pain in childbearing.
Also everybody knows that men only sin because of women. Like there would totally be no gays if women bowed to God's law to serve men's needs. Every man would want a wife if they were only pretty and loving and obedient!

by Anonymous | reply 18 | September 21, 2022 3:14 PM |
Bullshit, R8.
Perhaps your OBGYN doesn’t have this equipment, or chooses to not use.
My OBGYN, who practices in one of the best medical groups in all of Los Angeles, uses it to screen for multiple things, not just endometriosis, which I’ve never had.
Also, I have zero reasons to make this up or even consider lying about if. Why would I? That’s ridiculous.
Given, my statement that everyone uses these may have been much too broad, but my OBGYN, who is a woman, uses it.
If I’ve gotten a Pap smear from an NP or PA, it’s not used, so there is also, that distinction.

Pap smears NEVER include an ultrasound.

I've had ultrasounds only when I had fibroids and once when I experienced a spontaneous abortion. I've never had one for a regular checkup. I live in NYC, and have always had excellent healthcare. Away from, NYC, my college and professional school's healthcare centers were like small hospitals.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | September 21, 2022 4:14 PM |
I'm a woman, and I've only had an encounter with that dildo camera once. My regular gyno suspected I had a couple of fibroids about the size of an almond. (He guessed this during the part of the exam where he put two fingers inside and the other hand on my belly and then touched his hands together. Ouch!). So he sent me to a different lab to get the dildo camera test. It was uncomfortable and invasive. (Fortunately, they didn't see any fibroids.)
by Anonymous | reply 29 | September 21, 2022 4:17 PM |
LOL - forcing an invasive procedure is NOT a bug in Graham's ban nor an unintended consequence.
It is a specifically designed feature of the ban - it's completely intentional with just the faintest whiff of plausible deniability on his part if people become outraged, OUTRAGED I tell you, over it.

The transvag ultrasound is an advanced diagnostic tool. It is absolutely not part of routine healthcare.
For some women it is physically or emotionally painful to undergo the procedure. They may have a health issue that makes inserting anything into the vagina painful. Or they may be rape or domestic violence victims and may suffer flashbacks when having the device inserted.
Doctors and ultrasound techs are aware of this and thus approach it very carefully.

NO medical reason to use a transvaginal U/S unless the doc needs a close up look at something--usually a problem like endometriosis, ectopic pregnancy, fibroids, etc.
If it's being used for general visits, the doc is bill you and insurance so the doc can pay off the new machine (all the while convincing you you're getting cutting edge healthcare)

This device is not used as part of a normal routine by an OBGYN and the poster who said it was is a liar, insurance will not cover the use of unnecessary medical equipment for routine exams just because they can charge more, insurance will not allow it because a routine pap or vaginal exam can be done without it.
I think the real reason they want to require the use of this device is that it pushes the expense back on the woman instead of insurance and it can serve as a delay tactic by requiring a woman to get a referral for its use which would work against the deadline. If you live in a rural area or are poor this will not be easy to come by on short notice.
Most women don’t find out they are pregnant until they start to feel the effects and by then you are 7-9 weeks in and need to schedule an appointment which adds more time.

Then they'll throw some nut job like DeSantis in there, everyone will vote GOP because inflation is through the roof and/or we're buried in a depression, and then undo everything '22 to '24.

R26, that is definitely a possibility.
She may indeed be running up the insurance fees for additional diagnostics.
My grandmother on my paternal side of the family died in her early 50s from uterine cancer, as did one of her daughters (one of my aunts) which places me at high risk.
She also was diagnosed with breast cancer, before the uterine cancer took her out.
So yep. There are high risk situations which I am predisposed to.
So far, so good.
My grandmother on my dad’s side lived on an island all of her life. While she had access to medical care over there, it was not what we had then in the United States, nor is it what we have in the United States now.
We have superior medical care here, when we have access to great health insurance, obviously.
By the time my dad got her out here, it was too late for her, sadly enough.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | September 22, 2022 2:04 AM |
First off, while a transvaginal ultrasound is not by any means routine during checkups, it IS routine during early pregnancy for screening purposes at better-equipped ob/gyns. I had one for both of my pregnancies, and it was neither especially uncomfortable nor unduly invasive (especially compared to manual pelvic exams, which really ARE routine). And a trans-vaginal ultrasound produces crystal-clear images that are much more useful than what any external ultrasound would produce at that stage.
Also, the question is practically moot in this context, since a trans-vaginal ultrasound isn't any more invasive than an actual surgical abortion, which is the point of the procedure.
That said, screw Graham with a jackhammer and keep the Repigs' hands and minds off women's bodies.

While on rotations, my Ob/Gyne preceptor operated an abortion clinic after hours (all self-pay) using oral prostaglandins. Every patient would require an external US (and rarely transvaginal if inconclusive) determine fetal age since it the drug was only safe/effective on pregnancies before 12 weeks. I always assume that an US was required and standard of care for abortions since it allows the provider to see which how to safely terminate the pregnancy. But again I’m not in obstetrics.

R70, let me say it again: anyone who considers a trans-vaginal ultrasound excessively invasive has never had a gynecological pelvic exam with palpation. THAT'S both uncomfortable and invasive, and is a routine part of an ob/gyn exam.
But I assume most of the posters here have never had cause to see a gynecologist.
But this whole discussion has no relevance to the real issue, which is that no one should be deciding which procedures a woman undergoes except the woman herself and her -- hopefully competent -- doctor.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | September 22, 2022 2:09 PM |
R68
So all this time you've been rudely insisting that this type of scan is included in a routine gynecological exam when in fact YOU are a special case. Your family medical history necessitates extra procedures. The typical exam of a woman who is not pregnant or has a problem like fibroids does not involve this kind of scan.

It is intended to make the entire ordeal as arduous, uncomfortable, emotionally traumatic, and difficult as possible, all the while pretending to protect and ensure safety. It is a vicious and calculated attempt a punishment.

Actually, it's an astute statement . If the GOP wins in the midterms, women will keep pushing--but if the GOP wins, it means women voted for the GOP despite the overturning of Roe v Wade. The GOP will keep pushing its antiabortion stance because they won with it.
White women vote for the GOP by a majority when the GOP has never been shy about focusing on overturning Roe. If the GOP wins now, it means that it's just not an important enough topic to sway an election.

I know white and black church-y ladies who think they can pray hurricanes and cancer away. Seriously. If the hurricane hits anyway, then their prayers will still have been "answered" if some random kid lives through it or a church is left standing, amidst billions in destruction and tons of death. Their prayers will have been "answered" if the cancer patient suffers horribly and dies anyway, because they're in heaven with all of the other dead people their prayers didn't keep alive.
Those church ladies (of all colors) seem to have a type of simplistic thinking: I will always vote PRO LIFE! and will support a total ban on abortion, then I will pray on the subject! God will then take care of the need for any abortion to happen. (Except for those for the terribly wicked whores who have yet to accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior, BUT THEY DON'T COUNT!).
Those ladies are group who voted for The Dumpster and who will always vote "R". You won't ever convince them they can't pray away hurricanes, abortion, or the gay.
The other ladies (and THE MEN) are the ones we need to convince to vote BLUE for this issue and so many other issues to save Democracy.

Black women are not the problem, even the churchy ones. Black women vote for Dems at around a 90% rate. Because Black women understand that even if they personally are anti-abortion, giving the government power over women's bodies is dangerous.
Stop playing the media's game pf laying blame where it doesn't belong. The problem is WHITE men and to a lesser extent WHITE women.

We could fix this country tomorrow by taking the vote away from men. Truth.

Um, no.
Who do you think is leading the charge on book burning, home schooling, taking over school boards - it's all the mommy bloggers, mommy groups. And let's not even get into the breastfeeding until the kid is graduating from high school.
As history has demonstrated numerous times, women in power are just as vile and nasty as men in power. It's just that fewer women have been in power to indulge their nastiness.
Imbecile.

R107, numbers don't lie. If only women voted, there would be no Repugs elected across the entire country.

Numbers don't, but you do.
You refer to non-existent numbers:
[quote]Biden made gains with men, while Trump improved among women, narrowing the gender gap. The gender gap in the 2020 election was narrower than it had been in 2016, both because of gains that Biden made among men and because of gains Trump made among women. In 2020, men were almost evenly divided between Trump and Biden, unlike in 2016 when Trump won men by 11 points. Trump won a slightly larger share of women’s votes in 2020 than in 2016 (44% vs. 39%), while Biden’s share among women was nearly identical to Clinton’s (55% vs. 54%).
A great many women voted for cheeto. A great many more vote rethug at local, state, and federal levels. You are pushing a gender-based propaganda to further a false narrative.

[quote]r14 You do know women are the root of all evil, right? It's right there in Genesis. Eve defied God and tempted Adam to join her, bringing original sin down on the human species and as punishment God decreed that she had to suffer pain in childbearing.
Truer words were never spoke.

R109, you infinite moron, the numbers you posted prove I am correct.
We need to disenfranchise men for a century to fix the world.

I’ve had several transvaginal ultrasounds over the years and I’ve had to go to a radiological center for each one. They are very uncomfortable and they are NOT part of a regular check up. If your doctor uses them as such you should get another doctor!
