The “hot” new places?
The Nines

Temple Bar

And basically anywhere else you may see Eric Adams.

Though it started out as the epicenter of the pandemic in the US, New York State’s Covid infection and death rates are now comfortably well behind those of California, Florida and Texas. I’d still make sure I got the new booster as well as the Monkeypox shot and bring along some N95 masks to wear in crowded situations, but you should do that wherever you are.

In terms of gay bars the popular new spots these days are The Q, Hush, The Eagle(which has a new dancefloor and Playhouse.
In terms of gay parties r2 already mentioned Horsemeat Disco which sells out fast. There is also Battle Hymn, Harder, Wrecked as some of my favorites. Notably pretty much all the cool parties take place in Brooklyn (or southern Queens across from Brooklyn).

Also 3 Dollar Bill in Brooklyn is a newish gay owned event space, a lot of stuff takes places there these days.

OP, if you’re drunk in Midtown doing cheap coke off your laundry card, I have just the place for you. New York’s hottest club is DOUUUCHE. Inspired by true events, this former CVS, which became a Chase Bank and then became a CVS again, has a familiar yet troubling feel, like when Larry King would play himself in a movie. This place has everything: desk sets, key fobs, kale chips, Roman J. Israel, Esquire. Plus, you can play everyone’s favorite party game, The Stranger. Do you know that Billy Joel song “The Stranger?” Well, it’s when you sit on Billy Joel’s hand until it’s numb, and then you rub yourself with it. So you can pretend it’s Bruce Springsteen’s hand.

Only in the EV where most of the nightlife is. Otherwise, the rest of the city looks like a senior center even the area near NYU. The West Village east of 6th has many straight couples with kids.

That’s pretty cool.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | November 10, 2022 9:28 PM |
The city seems dirtier than ever. It needs to be cleaned from top to bottom. The subways are the most filthy they’ve been since the 70s.
There have been lots of cops in the subways. They kind of hide though but come out of nowhere the second they are needed. Other times they are purposely visible in the subways. This is recent.
Post-Covid glamor is still slight. But it’s coming back. People are on edge but mostly benign unless you aggravate them. That’s when you see the edge to everyone. Even for New York.

It’s hard to appreciate the pops of murals and other attempts to make the city visually interesting through all the soot and grime that covers the city now.
The locals don’t notice the trashier surroundings. If you made it through Covid and stayed, you got used to it.
If you left and came back you see the difference.
The thing about Bloomberg is that you could feel that someone was running the city. Like it or not. Someone was in charge. There was an agenda.
There is no such feeling now. There is a feeling of no one at the wheel, and every space is going in their own direction and the landlords run the show. Anything goes again. They have the upper hand and know it. No more daily sweeping of the lobby. It’s once a week at best.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | November 10, 2022 9:34 PM |
I don’t see the uptick in crime but the crazies are a bit more crazy and the air is thicker with fear than per usual. People have been spooked by the viral videos but do you really see that daily? Depends who you ask but I don’t.
I would say it’s a bit like regular NYC but right after 9-11. Post traumatic.
But someone needs to take the wheel. The pandemic is over it I hate to see the city blowing so aimlessly in the wind.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | November 10, 2022 9:37 PM |

In some ways you can still see the old Ny. Especially during the recent marathon. The city was/is getting back to it’s pretty Covid ways. Slowly but surely. But it’s happening on its own. Naturally and not from a central place. That place always seems to be playing catch up. A dollar short and a day late. Never out in front.

Honey, like myself, most of the NYers here are more worried about breaking a hip than being hip. Still, I've lived here on and off since 1980 and full time for the past 25 years and IMHO it's never been better, every day I see improvements; the bike lanes, the parks have all been refurbished, 8th ave got paved and has parking lanes and bike lanes, I didn't even recognize it. Subway times are no longer a mystery, you can walk in to any smoke shop and buy a "roll-up" from 8-30 dollars depending on the weed and smoke it in front of a cop or anywhere else. None of those fancy schmancy dispensaries in all the other places. "Here's 10 dollars, give a joint" done in a NY second. Have I mentioned the men and the outdoor sex happening? Every neighborhood has its own type of hot guy. I'm too old but it's still nice to see every time I walk down any street. It's never boring.

Are you saying Nashville is hotter than NYC right now?
By the way that is not real marijuana, gramps. It’s HHC, delta 9 and cbd being sold to tourists and suckers as real weed. It wouldn’t be $20 an 8th if it was real.
You have to either have a underground number or take a bus to the NJ dispensaries. Please heed this warning, that bodega and storefront weed in nyc is unregulated, full of toxic chemicals and is 100% synthetic and or cbd/delta/HHC also they throw in all kids of extra crap like fentanyl and perfumes.
The legit storefronts don’t open until May (unless you have a weed rx card). The trucks too. All that weed is fake. It’s not legal to sell weed yet. Just to posses it.

by Anonymous | reply 76 | November 11, 2022 2:48 AM |
Everything is pretty much back to normal for most part with a few niggles here and there.
Streets are crowded, traffic is terrible, subways are full to packed, and so forth.
Office employers have been ordering more people back full time or otherwise curtailing WFH, though things aren't 100%
That being said there was a fundamental shift in many areas and things just won't go back to way they were before covid.
Restaurants and bars are still closing (Green Kitchen on Second Avenue on UES did so a few months ago), due to a combination of factors.
First and foremost many bars, restaurants, clubs and so on lost too much of their customer base and those numbers aren't changing. This is also true for many service or retail businesses as well.
Low wage places (minimum wage in NYC is $15/hr.) such as restaurants, bars, retail, etc... cannot find decent staff. Many people either left city and or have found other employment. Paying more isn't an option as there are natural limits as to high prices can be raised to cover.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | November 11, 2022 3:14 AM |
R40 and R77 hit the nail on the head. I’m 33 and almost all of my friends moved during the pandemic. Some of my favorite restaurants closed, nothing is open nearly as late as it used to, the subways are not safe, there is insane traffic, etc- a lot of small inconveniences add up to a major difference.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | November 11, 2022 6:03 AM |
It truly is amazing how nearly everything closes by 2AM. You have to try very hard to find a DR, RA, CVS or similar store open past that time much less 24/7.
Most restaurants are closed by 1AM if not earlier. Bars may not have closing time legally until 4AM, but many are near dead long before last call.
In other sad turn of events the "rich man/poor man" gap in NYC is right back where it was and growing.
Inflation, high housing costs and so on compared to not so great wage growth is squeezing all sorts of households in city. Pawn shops are busy and there is more competition digging through trash bags from supermarkets and shops....

by Anonymous | reply 81 | November 11, 2022 6:56 AM |
Many bars long were closed on Monday. This was before pandemic, the day just isn't often very busy.
Exceptions often were working class or local dive joints that did a decent enough business when people got off work. Think guys like Archie Bunker and his local in Queens.
Many gay bars in city were open on Monday back in day because, well if you wanted to cruise or whatever there weren't many other options. Rise of internet and apps has done away with much of that need.

Lee Zeldin only carried South Brooklyn and Staten Island. Rest NYC was solidly Hochul.
As for Long Island, Westchester and other parts of NY not downstate for some time now there has been a migration of conservative/working class or whatever you want to call them out of Manhattan (except certain areas of Bronx, Queens, South Brooklyn and of course Staten Island.
Those not moving to New Jersey or otherwise out of state all together are going to LI and so on. In short certain suburbs of NYC are becoming more conservative while city itself leans ever more left/socialist.
You saw this in last election cycle as well when Long Island and some other parts of NYS went more red than people imagined.
Houchl and her supporters knew this and it's why she barely bothered with upstate (where she was and still is widely disliked), to concentrate on downstate, in particular NYC.

by Anonymous | reply 100 | November 13, 2022 7:32 AM |
Democrats and others are ticked off AC didn't spend much if any of his sizable war chest helping candidates.
People may say what they like, but Cuomo still is a force many democrats in NYS worry about. There are credible fears he may run again for governor and could possibly win.
Many NYS voters believe Andrew Cuomo was driven out of office to serve liberal, democrat, left progressives who were sick and tired of "King Cuomo". The don't believe those sexual harassment claims, and or if they did occur don't think AC should have been forced out of office.

3 Dollar Bill is an gay event venue r151. It varies from hosting dance parties, to plays, to drag shows, to sex parties. Have to check to calendar on the website to see what is coming up and buy tickets. I've had some very fun nights there, huge outdoor space they open up for some events in the summer.
Rosemont is gay club popular with young Brooklyn gays. It's not my scene personally, as a 30-something I am a little old and it's a small place with one bathroom that gets very crowded.
Other gay parties that happen in Brooklyn include Horse Meat Disco, Battle Hymn, Wrecked, Harder, Alegria, Papi Juice to name a few.

"It seems like Sundays are totally dead with tumbleweeds blowing through the streets."
Historically Sundays were always slow, this goes back decades. People have to be at work or school on Monday, or have other things to get done before weekend is over.
Back in day yes, you did have Sunday "tea dances" where action happened a bit earlier. Monster was one of the first, but there were others such as Ice Palace 57...
We used to joke that Sunday tea events were to get rid of whatever trick you picked up on Saturday night, or last chance to find some action before weekend was over.
In any event again thanks to our friend Mr. Internet and is cousin Mr. App there is less need to go out on a Sunday looking for anything. Just let your fingers do the walking...

Downtown/Lower Manhattan is pretty universally below 14th Street r207. Neighborhoods like West Village, Greenwich Village, East Village/LES, SoHo etc Lower Manhattan is definitely considered more desirable, there is a reason West Village, Soho, Tribeca has the highest rents in the city.
How in terms of gay nightlife specifically there is still more going on in Hells Kitchen/Chelsea. But for straight people it's definitely all about lower Manhattan is the place to be on the island.

by Anonymous | reply 210 | November 20, 2022 1:44 PM |
HIV/Aids crisis of 1980's and 1990's saw a huge shift away from West Village as center of gay nightlife. First stop was Chelsea then things moved northward to Hell's Kitchen.
That being said there were various other forces at work.
First and foremost what began with SoHo spread down to Financial District to south and north to Tribeca and West Village. These areas went from industrial, manufacturing, working or middle class to high end/wealthy residential. That in turn pushed up rents for both residential and commercial spaces.
Owing to the piers and railroad much of West Village was working or middle class Irish or Italian well into 1970's. These were the people Jane Jacobs rallied to fight Robert Moses and his highway plans.
One by one things that made West Village sort of not desirable (piers, warehouses, industrial, etc..) began to vanish. Rest was helped along by the massive gentrification of Manhattan that started under mayor Rudy G and gained steam with Bloomberg's administration.

And back in the day Sundays at The Tunnel, Splash, Escuelita, X Ave Lounge, The Limelight . . . were hopping with among many others hairdressers and Broadway babies. Universal Grill in the Village had a popular Monday party and Tuesdays it was Beige in the EV and Jackie 60 in the meat packing district.

Bulk of workers in restaurants or whatever were heavy on illegal immigrants. That lot has found plenty of other ways to make money, far more than working in kitchens and so on.
Since NY, NJ and other states have given illegals drivers licenses a good number have gone into business for themselves. On any given night about 7PM or so you see cars, SUV, vans arriving with PA, NJ and some NY plates hauling all sorts of cleaning supplies and machines. People have set themselves up in janitorial services haven't they? They do floor washing/buffing, and other work for all sorts of retail, restaurants and other establishments.
There is also driving for Lyft or Uber and other ways such as construction...

The three suspects, a man and two women, approached their 42-year-old victim and his 41-year-old female companion, who are both Asian, on the shuttle train from Grand Central Station to Times Square around 8 p.m. Saturday, police said.
The suspects ordered the victims to give up their seats, cops said. When that apparently didn’t happen, the suspects punched and kicked the male victim, leaving him with a small cut on his head, according to cops.

I’ve never like the Stonewall bar. Awkward smelly ugly and just weird. With zero history - as it is not even the same bar as the original but a 1990s weird design.
Pieces is fun - if again very 90s. But at least a good fun vibe.
Playhouse is ALL DRAG all the time - which I just don’t understand. Are they trying to PREVENT people from meeting/talking? If I wanted to go to a show/theater, there are a lot more talented performers. Why make a gay bar a theater? But they have good draft beer and it’s a nicely renovated space. But don’t expect to meet anyone - you are expected to come with a group, sit only with them and then give money to mediocre attention-craving drag performers.

Stephanie Beacham was born and raised in Hertfordshire, England which is one of the home counties. Her normal speaking accent is a common form of RP spoken in that part of UK.
As a student at Royal Academy of Dramatic Art Ms. Beacham would have learned some form of RP as part of elocution and other training , same as others attending who attend RADA.
Ms. Beacham's mother was ill with chickenpox while waiting for her daughter to be born. Stephanie Beacham is partially deaf, having been born with no hearing in her right ear and 80% hearing in her left ear as a result.

It's been many years now since NYC has had really deep cold winters. Even from January through March we rarely get long stretches of temps at or below freezing along with wind chills and significant snow fall.
Yes, there are the odd cold periods for a several days or even a week, along with odd snow storm, but nothing like things were say in 1970's or before.
As for rest of your query action merely moves indoors. Bars, restaurants, performing arts events.. Unless temps reach at or below freezing plenty of people are out and about and there are many options for watching. Ice skating, people playing sports in parks, or just walking around.

by Anonymous | reply 247 | November 25, 2022 7:32 PM |
I'm terrified of monkey pox. I took the Holland Tunnel back from thanksgiving dinner in NJ yesterday on the way home to Westchester, and I stopped at a deli in Chelsea to get a water and protein bar. The customer in front of me in line, an obvious gay, had some weird marks on his hand. I didn't think anything of this at the moment, but when I exited the store and got outside, I suddenly thought, could that be mpox? Then I imagined my goods touching the same counter that his did, and the cashier handling my stuff after handling his. I froze. It became too much, so I threw the water and protein bar in the trash. Better safe than sorry.

NYC has indeed lost the edge but it’s still exponentially more influential and voluminous in terms of culture and activity.
And it’s just not comparable. There is nothing similar about the two. The are completely different and seem nothing alike.
There is a connection though I guess because they are on the same coast but that connection is people based and has nothing to do with having alike qualities.
It’s just crazy and wrong that this so becoming a meme. People want to seem in the know so they repeat this.

As someone who has lived in NYC for 30+ years, there is an energy now that hasn’t existed for years/decades. The pent up social energy of young people post-pandemic is fueling more partying, sex, socializing than I’ve seen in a long time. The stop and start of the past 2+ years is finally over. The Mpox spread around Pride in July was the first indication - as was the skyrocketing rents reflecting the huge demand (mostly by younger people) to be here no matter what the price/living place restriction. Since August, it feels like the bars are full, people are incredibly social and the hesitancy about sex is evaporating. More sex than I’ve had in years - and I’m an eldergay.

A tale of two boroughs
A new report from the Real Estate Board of NY shows retail resiliency in trendy neighborhoods such as Williamsburg, Cobble Hill, and Greenpoint.
by Anonymous | reply 275 | November 28, 2022 5:28 AM |
So much of retail and hospitality in Manhattan say below Harlem depends upon a few main sources for customers; office workers, tourists, upscale/luxury/high net worth persons.
Out in Brooklyn and parts of Queens dynamics have changed up. Those trendy areas located in Williamsburg and so on rely upon locals for a good amount of their customer base. Suffice to say Williamsburg and other parts of Brooklyn in 2022 are not same as 1992, 2002, or even 2012.
Back in day Brooklyn and Queens were largely considered backwaters; if you wanted to *do* anything you schlepped into Manhattan where all the action was, that's not true any longer.
You know Williamsburg has arrived when Hermes is opening a location there...
In short North 6th street and huge part of Williamsburg is becoming what SoHo and Tribeca were back in day. This isn't surprising since large number of those displaced from those areas in Manhattan moved out to Williamsburg.
by Anonymous | reply 276 | November 28, 2022 8:14 AM |
I don’t get Brooklyn. I’m going back there shortly and will do so with an open mind. But usually I feel out of place because I’m not wearing something zany. Is there a place in Brooklyn for those who are not “on” all the time and have all the correct lingo etc.
by Anonymous | reply 277 | November 28, 2022 8:08 PM |
That is the vibe of Bushwick, Greenpoint, Williamsburg r277. If that's not a vibe you like you aren't going to like the "cool parts" of Brooklyn.
But there other areas. Downtown Brooklyn, DUMBO, Fort Green. Those southern Brooklyn neighborhoods are less hipster than Northern Brooklyn
by Anonymous | reply 278 | November 28, 2022 8:12 PM |
R278 thanks that is informative.
It’s not like I don’t like that scene so much as that scene doesn’t like me. Which is surprising because I’m naturally quirky. Almost too much so for Manhattan. But nowhere near enough for Brooklyn because my quirkiness is not a put on or an act. So it’s an odd place to be for me. It should feel at home but it feels like everybody is faking it.
by Anonymous | reply 279 | November 28, 2022 8:15 PM |
I was expecting to be welcomed into open arms, celebrating my uniqueness. I was to have found a new “home” and could shun Manhattan forever. I was going to just leave it to the squares.

Fort Green and Dumbo are not in "Southern Brooklyn"
Coney Island and Bensonhurst are.
Most of Brownstone Brooklyn aka Gentrified Brooklyn is not Hipster Heaven.

by Anonymous | reply 281 | November 28, 2022 8:30 PM |

"I've heard wonderful things about Brooklyn Heights. Can someone who makes $80K afford to live there without a roommate?"
No!
Brooklyn Heights has been pricey rent wise for decades, things went into overdrive for past one or two.
NYC landlords typically like to see a forty times rent to income ratio. Eighty grand per year is not going to get you far in most of NYC. You'll need to find a roommate or two. This unless you land some sort of affordable or low income housing.

Come on now, that is going to be nigh impossible in any desirable neighborhood. You need to look out. Upper Manhattan in Washington Heights/Inwood, Queens in like Jackson Heights/Sunnyside areas. Weehawken/Union/West New York in New Jersey.
Those types of neighborhoods. Brooklyn Heights is very desirable and expensive.

"That poster might be able to find a studio in Lenox Hill/Yorkville/UES."
Oh really? Have you been to UES/Yorkville lately? Even east of Third avenue to East End has gotten very expensive.
With luck and bit of effort someone may find a rent stabilized unit for about $1600, but it's going to be in some old tenement (likely walk up) building and probably far as fuck from anything.
Second Avenue subway has been a game changer. Now living between Second and First or even First and York isn't considered such a backwater.
In any event even if rent was say $1600 month a LL still would want to see 40x rent ratio.

Agree R299 - the only real dance clubs left in NYC are in Brooklyn - though he elides the step where they have to travel 45 minutes and lose their buzz as they trek out to Greenpoint - presumably via an expensive Uber paid for by Sniffies. Also appropriate it started at Julius which seems to be the hookup spot lately - because people actual meet and talk to strangers there. In general, it’s what I would suggest as an ideal night in NyC right now - including the revamped, dancing Eagle which has made it worthwhile to taxi over there. A good capture of the ethos of NYC right now. Including the sex positivity.

Ok so this is going to get going pretty quick with the weed stuff. But initially there will only be 4 outlets in Manhattan which is going to cause some long ass lines. So I would say give it all about 6 months to sort itself out. Maybe 3 if we’re lucky.
Woe be unto those who do not shop legitimate storefronts. There is so much fake crap going around and only the most savvy and connected can try to cut through the underground and the counterfeit scenes (not the same thing).
These first 4 stores are probably going to be pricey given the low competition but eventually things should level out.
The question is what does this mean for NJ? They will have to step up their mediocre legal weed now.
Also curious if NY is only going to sell NY weed which is what NJ does and it think that creates quality issues and lack of competition

Weed: R319 I'm really worried more people are going to get hurt until the well-regulated stuff comes. There is too much money in it and this will attract some awful ingredients/manufacturing processes for awhile. Apparently some strong strains make people vomit to the point of needing to go to the ER!
Quality Bistro: Very loud and more cramped inside than expected. the dining sheds were surprisingly quiet. Mediocre food and drinks.
Milady Bar (Tribeca): Quiet, very dark atmosphere. A good place to unwind with creative drinks and nice staff.
The Shed: The bookstore has a pretty small but excellent range of art and urban planning books. The crowd is pretty old and quiet.
MOMA: Boring exhibits for at least the last 2 years, compared to the other big museums. Forgettable art, but a good shop onsite and offsite.
Saks Flagship: Limited selection of clothes and WAY too much space devoted to perfume. Bizarre setup for a flagship. The holiday windows sucked.

They don't want to go to the more rural parts of the south filled with Confederate flags and angry hypocrites on welfare who complain about the wrong kinds of people on welfare!

Pot was always easily available and there were a few services that delivered to your apartment. Before there was a ban on smoking in clubs and restaurants smoking pot was often tolerated and smoked openly in a number of venues. My friend lit up a joint at 7/A and passed it around the table and no one including the waitress blinked an eye. You could always buy small bags of pot in Washington Square Park and there were several Candy Stores around.

Under The Skin, a play about gay tattooist/historian Samuel Steward, opened last night at La Mama's.
"Its text is artfully derived by Kelly from Steward’s own words, and usually narrated by Kelly live, or in recorded voice over. There are surrealist fantasy sequences; a standout is an actor reading from one of Steward’s porno books about a sexual escapade with a police officer. Two actors suggest the actions, giving us the sense of Steward’s pornographic talent with his lyrically graphic description of this incident of fellatio."

Neil Diamond's musical A Beautiful Noise promised for spring of 2022 finally makes it to Broadway. The reviews are so so at best. Wonder who the audience for this show will be?
VARIETY-
If you are looking to draw an audience into what seems like a typical biographical jukebox musical, starting and ending your drama in psychoanalysis is a great device. Then again, “A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical,” does not exactly play by all the rules of jukebox theater. It unfolds first as a hit parade within a dramatic retelling of Diamond’s 1960s beginnings in Act 1, followed by a second act set of sequined, post-1960s concerts spliced with portraits of a broken marriage and lonely childhood, and then a denouement of hardcore emotional resolve.
All that, plus sparkly fringe and a poignant, pre-intermission sing-along of “Sweet Caroline.” Ultimately, “A Beautiful Noise” is victorious, but not without a few rough bumps along the way — much like the trajectory of Diamond’s life.

Rents are really fucked again. New York staying near the summer peak even as lots of other cities have seen their rents go back down. The bullshit "tenant rights" law they passed in 2019 means you legally need to be making 40 times the rent to sign a lease.

Enjoy it while it lasts. The casino itself will be one of the greatest revitalization projects for Times Square in the past 100 years.
But problems will arise shortly after. Casinos need to be majorly overhauled every 4 years, and everything needs to be 100% stripped out and replaced every 8 years to avoid it looking like a gone-to-seed piece of shit.
It will attract lowlifes from day one. But that won't drive the high net-worth individuals away, as long as the place looks good. Rubbing shoulders with lowlifes in a safe environment gives feelings of excitement to the wealthy.

Well, goodbye Therapy... hello, Hush! I guess that's what comes with change. Very nicely renovated space. It felt very welcoming and oddly better than it's predecessor. The bartenders were very nice, there was great dancers. The drag show was fantastic. Such great queens. And the drinks were much cheaper and better than the surrounding bars. I'm so happy this location opened up again. I was only there once but it was a great night. I'm not a prude, but I wasn't the biggest fan of the videography. I get it, it's a gay bar, but maybe doing a vjay instead of clips of porn. Support your local gay bar!

"Glauber T. NJ, NJ
11/13/2022 I've been coming to this place almost every week for a year, driving for 3 hours round trip from New Jersey. Unfortunately that ended yesterday. One particular customer had been disruptive and abusive towards the pianist and other patrons for several months, but management did nothing after repeated complaints. The pianist finally had enough and quit. I had joined a group of friends dubbed the "piano family" that followed the pianist for years, even staying strong during the pandemic. Yesterday that also ended (at least until there's a better venue). It's disappointing that management chose one rude customer over their own talent and other loyal customers. Luckily there are many other piano bars in New York City."

Rounds is long gone, r381, but it was a great place in the early '80s (yes, I'm an eldergeigh).
"Charles Scaglione Sr. recently has published a self-styled memoir chronicling his adventures in operating Rounds, a reputed NYC gay hustler bar that opened in 1979, and he's telling some secrets and naming some names. In Camelot Lost (RoseDog Books 2009) Scaglione offers a rarely-revealed insider's perspective into the business side of a gay nightlife establishment -- or "store" as it's referred to in the industry -- and as a straight man provides unique cultural insight into the gay scene as it leaves the wild seventies for the AIDS-ravaged eighties. Rounds, often euphemistically referred to by Scaglione as a "cruising bar," was located at 303 East 53rd Street in an upscale midtown area known as "the loop" where johns would seek to hook up with hustlers, and its owners apparently intended from the beginning to capitalize on the neighborhood vibe: "The street is a perfect location for a hustler bar. That is what it shall be." * * * The grand opening of Rounds in 1979 was a star-studded event according to Scaglione in Camelot Lost, and he alleges that record producer David Geffen, Studio 54 owner Steve Rubel, and fashion designer Calvin Klein were among those in attendance. Other celebrities and glitterati who allegedly patronized Rounds over the years included Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote, Andy Warhol and Vladimir Horowitz."

by Anonymous | reply 390 | December 8, 2022 9:29 PM |
It isn't easy, r390. I moved here in the 80s with $1,000. Back then you could use the classifieds in Village Voice to bounce from sublet to sublet. I did that, and finally bought a busted up old building in a very bad part of Queens. Still possible to do, but you really have to look. South Bronx ans parts of Queens are your best bet.
All the kids I know get by with roommates.

Because Manhattan is in reality only a small sliver of New York r390. There are tons of working class families in the Bronx, Queens, deep into Brooklyn. Several times r414. It's one of the more popular places in Hells Kitchen, the top floor becomes a big dance party every weekend. Always need to buy a ticket to get in weekend nights. The very annoying thing is there is no bathroom on the top floor so you have to go downstairs if you need to go, and then potentially wait in line(!) to get back in the top floor when they are busy.
If you are a cruisy type, they have a cruisy sex themed party on Thursday nights on the second floor in what becomes their dark room.
Outside of the peak times they will also host drag shows and other performances. Because it is three stories they have more areas to play with than most Manhattan bars.

Definitely has been some forward movement if you like that old school cruise party vibe.
