I’m Being Tortured By Pirates

Minute pirate bugs. They’re eating me alive. The fuckers hurt like hell, then itch for at least a week. It seems some people feel the bite but don’t react after the bite. I do. It’s fucking torture. I have nectar beds for birds, bees and butterflies. They attract pirate bugs. I especially get bitten when deadheading my butterfly bushes.

The bugs go mad for food in the end of summer/early fall. They want one last meal before cold weather comes and that meal is me. I only started getting these bites about 3 years ago. Thought I had bed bugs Tore the house apart. I guess I got sensitized to bites of pirate bugs over the years. Do of you gardeners get the crap bitten out of you at this time of year?

Geez can’t you just spray yourself with Off! before you go out there? That’s too close to bedbugs.

by Anonymousreply 4September 14, 2022 5:15 AM

Off has DEET in it and tho they like to call DEET an “insect repellent” instead of a pesticide, it’s toxic. You shouldn’t plant nectar plants then use toxins on the insects yiu attract. That’s like putting out poisoned dog food.

Aaaaarrrrrrgh.

Cut off me leg and call my Peggy.

That’s about all I know about pirates. Sorry, OP.

To me, these are far worse than mosquito bites. They start off tiny and slightly itchy, but they get worse and worse as time goes on. They’re also close to sweat glands, which makes them more uncomfortably damp that skeet bites.

I’m using lidocaine roll on. I don’t want to take Benadryl because I need to stay alert. M

They try to make you think DEET isn’t a pesticide.

It’s a pesticide.

The US Environmental Protection Agency states that citronella oil has little or no toxicity when used as a topical insect repellent, with no reports of adverse effects of concern over a 60-year period.[22] Some products are applied to human skin, so EPA requires proper precautionary labeling to help assure safe use. If used according to label instructions in the US, citronella is not expected to pose health risks to people, including children and other sensitive populations.[2] The US Food & Drug Administration considers citronella oil as generally recognized as safe (GRAS).

R5 Wrong. DEET does not harm or kill insects, it masks our smell so they cannot detect us. It IS listed as a pesticide, which is a broad category that includes repellents.

by Anonymousreply 11September 14, 2022 6:11 PM

If you have children under 2 months, don’t apply repellents containing DEET to repel fleas and other biting insects. For children older than 2 months, always ensure that they don’t have access to DEET repellents.

DEET may also be toxic for your pets, as we’ve discussed extensively. When it comes into contact with their eyes, it can lead to issues like conjunctivitis, scleritis, corneal ulceration, and blepharospasm.

If your pet inhales DEET, it can lead to airway inflammation and difficulty in breathing. There may also be the case of gastrointestinal issues like vomiting, disorientation, tremors, seizures, and shaking.

Ingesting DEET can lead to seizures and brain malfunctioning. This can be severe in children. Birds, fish, and aquatic vertebrates may also be negatively affected by DEET. [bold] Even low concentrations can be toxic. [/bold]

DEET remains in the air when it’s sprayed as a mist and would need to be broken down by the atmosphere. This is also dependent on the wind, temperature, and relative humidity. When DEET enters the soil, it’s moderately mobile.

Although DEET can’t cause damage to natural fibers like cotton, it can damage some items made from vinyl, rubber, or plastic. Items such as watch crystals, lenses, shoes, and combs should be kept away from products containing DEET

————-

The above quotes come from an article extolling the safety ofDEET.

Don’t tell me DEET doesn’t kill insects. When I prune and deadhead shrubs, my hands and clothes touch flowers, stems, leaves and branches, leaving DEET behind. It’s fucking toxic. The very articles claiming it doesn’t kill insects tells you plainly - it’s toxic. It can poison children and pets. It destroys synthetics. Don’t get it in your eyes.

Insects have eyes. They land on a plant with DEET on it, they’ll be blinded. Toxin will get into their systems through their skin and through self grooming.

You know how the US allows things that aren’t organic to be labeled “organic”? And how things that aren’t all natural can be labeled “all natural”? Well guess what? They also allow toxic things to be labeled “non toxic.”

The high school dropouts with drug and drinking problems who got a job with a national pesticide franchise and now call themselves “pest experts” will tell you “organic “ pesticides are “safe.”

If they kill insects, how are they “safe”? No insects, no food for nestling and fledgling birds. No insects, no food for many types of fish.

Arsenic is “all natural.” So are belladonna, datura, foxglove and radon. The “all-natural” part of the atomic bomb is what wipes out life.

Seriously ask yourself - why does an article extolling the safety of DEET tell me DEET is toxic?

Because it’s poison, that’s why. But it’s sold worldwide and makes megabillions globally…… so it’s “safe.”

If you're attracting flies, OP, try improving your hygiene and crossing your legs.

by Anonymousreply 13September 15, 2022 8:03 PM

Get rid of your stupid butterfly beds that are attracting them.

God, you’re so stupid.

by Anonymousreply 14September 15, 2022 8:36 PM

Just keep them away from your butt, the last thing you need is Butt Pirate bugs.
