The Queen's 4 children stood vigil at her coffin today. Edward has a chest full of medals. How the hell did he get them when he only served in the Royal Marines for 4 months before quitting. Some his mother gave him, no doubt. It's actually comical to see him with all that regalia on his bosoms.

Prince Harry will not be wearing his military uniform to the upcoming funeral of Queen Elizabeth.
The spokesperson for the Duke of Sussex, 37, tells PEOPLE in a statement that he "will wear a mourning suit throughout events honoring his grandmother."
"His decade of military service is not determined by the uniform he wears, and we respectfully ask that focus remain on the life and legacy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II," the spokesperson adds.
Prince Harry, who served in the British Army for 10 years and was deployed to Afghanistan twice, lost his three honorary military titles (Captain General of the Royal Marines, Honorary Air Commandant of RAF Honington and Commodore-in-Chief, Small Ships and Diving, Royal Naval Command) after he and wife Meghan Markle stepped back from their senior royal roles in March 2020.
Buckingham Palace confirmed Monday that at the five major ceremonial events leading up to and including the Queen's state funeral, only working members of the royal family who hold military rank will wear military uniforms.
While King Charles III, Prince William, Princess Anne and Prince Edward are expected to step out in traditional regalia for the mourning events, the Queen's son Prince Andrew and grandson Harry will not, as they are no longer senior working royals.
Though Andrew, 62, will be seen in suits for the remainder of the lead-up ceremonies, a special exception has been made for him to wear a military uniform at the final vigil as a sign of respect for his mother and monarch, who "peacefully" died at age 96 on Thursday.
Prince Andrew spent 22 years in the Royal Navy, serving as a helicopter pilot in the Falklands War in 1982. He was stripped of his military titles and royal patronages in January after he was accused of sexual assault by Virginia Roberts Giuffre, a victim of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein's former ring.
The decision on uniforms differs from Prince Philip's funeral at Windsor Castle in April 2021, when Buckingham Palace announced that no senior royal family members would wear traditional military uniforms.
However, Queen Elizabeth's funeral will differ from her husband's as Philip's service was scaled back to a ceremonial royal funeral — not a state funeral — due to COVID-19 concerns.

The majority of his medals are not military medals, but they can be worn with a uniform nonetheless. He's a member of the Order of the Garter and the Royal Victorian Order. Because he wears the riband of the Garter in full, the riband of the Royal Victorian Order can be worn on the chest in medal form. Commemorative medals were issued to many people throughout the Commonwealth, including members of the Queen's family. I've seen him and his siblings wearing the Queen's Silver Jubilee, the Golden Jubilee, and the Diamond Jubilee medals. Charles and Anne also have their mother's Coronation medals. Also, like his siblings, they've received commemorative medals from Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.
So the medals aren't fake. You just don't know what they are for and incorrectly assumed they were military service.

r55 that's all well and good, but doesn't explain why they can't pin them on a normal suit rather then insisting on military uniforms, despite half of these man/women-children never serving at all. Really is no better then some dictator playing dress up in military attire.

It's customary for for regiments in the UK and the Commonwealth to have Colonels-in-Chief and members of the Royal Family usually hold the ceremonial position. Some Royals are Colonel-in-Chief of several. Ceremonial or not, it does entitle them to a uniform. I'm not saying it's appropriate, I'm just explaining how it works.

Anne seems the most grief stricken of all the children. There is enormous sadness in her visage. The resting bitch face which has always been her public shield has been overcome by crushing sorrow. by Anonymous | reply 65 | September 17, 2022 12:52 AM |
They're all fake medals, bogus uniforms, and stolen valor.
Only Andrew genuinely served in the armed forces in a legitimate and un-bought role. Charles rode a desk and "commanded" a boat the size of a beer cooler after dear Uncle Dickie pulled strings to get him skipped ahead a few years. And Edward left basic training to go dance onstage and produce "It's a Royal Knockout." Anne's uniform is due to her honorary appointments as admiral of this or that auxiliary service. She was never an active member.

According to you, if you serve in the military and don't see active service on the front lines in a war, then it's not real service and it's just "stolen valor"? People who only do desk service are just pretending?
by Anonymous | reply 68 | September 17, 2022 12:57 AM |
The BBC commentator said in a snarky way - well, 3 out of 4 of them served in the military.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | September 17, 2022 1:02 AM |
R68 It's stolen valor when you wear the uniform of an admiral, despite never earning that rank in legitimate military service. It's stolen valor when most of your medals are given to you by your own mother, and not open to the men and women who serve legitimately in the armed forces. It's stolen valor when you only wear the hardware store to stand next to a coffin, and not to a real job.
His only legitimate rank was, what? Ensign? Anything above that had to be given to him at the expense of other sailors who earned their way.
Charles tried being a pilot, until he crashed one of his mother's planes. He tried being a sailor, but had to get relatives to promote him up the chain. He holds the same military rank today as Dwight Eisenhower, Douglas MacArthur, and Georgy Zhukov held during WWII. Those heroes earned their stars. Charles got them by falling out of the right crotch.

"Anne seems the most grief stricken of all the children. There is enormous sadness in her visage."
She was the only one there for the last few days, I expect she did what most daughters do and took more responsibility for aging parents than her brothers. So yes, she and Charles are the only ones who look sad, and Charles looks more crushed than sad, like someone let the air out of him (and that SOB Andrew is obviously enjoying his last chance to parade before the public). But Anne's life hasn't changed except for the loss of her parents, so she's the one who's grieving the most, although it doesn't stop her from being perfectly Correct in public.

The Queen herself wore admiral's outfits and medals every year for the Trooping of the Colour (when she was young enough still to accomplish it). Do you think she was awarded them for outstanding auto mechanic's duties above and beyond the call of duty in the Women's Auxiliary service for four months in 1945?

I know the whole tourism thing is touted, but how many tourists actually see any of the Royals? I’d say not many. So buildings like BP and the guards would still be business as usual. All the homes in the crown worth billions can be privatized for profit. I mean honest to goodness, they have the best scam going, even their renovations are paid for by tax dollars.

Charles and Andrew are certainly failures. Though Andrew deserves a category of his own. He certainly wins the Harvey Weinstein creep of the year award every year. Edward is average and likes his musicals but Anne seems the most level headed and even keeled of all of them.
Charles has been going on about climate change forever yet lives a life about as wasteful and exploitive of the earth's resources as can be imagined. Harry takes very much after him. Being so concerned about how life is so unfair to so many people including himself and his wife but instead of taking a vow of poverty and administering to the aid of others he has taken an oath of sheer greed to live a life as costly and grand as possible and like his father to take horrible advantage of others and use as much of the earth's resources as a human possibly. They are like the liberal version of christian republicans. Yet, Harry who actually did serve over in Afghanistan, isn't allowed to wear his uniform. He really did earn it. I know someone will defend the decision. I was scolded before on another thread about it. I don't care. Harry was a real soldier and should be allowed to wear his uniform.

All this talk about Andrew and wearing their uniforms for the 15-minute, pre-funeral vigils. Sheesh, they both served in the military (Andrew for 22 years; Harry for 10), but neither are in the military any longer, so they both should have worn their mourning coats, not military uniforms.
However, Edward definitely should not have worn a military get-up. He never served at all other than four months. How did Edward sneak below the radar?

"Is it me or do Queen Elizabeth's children all seem like failures?"
I wouldn't say Anne is a failure in life. She accepted a job with the family Firm knowing what the limitations were for her, she did as good a job as she could, and she did what she liked on her own time. Her children have turned out well, she's earned real respect as an equestrian, and if her marriages haven't been a raging success... she doesn't strike me as the sort of woman who's going to be a raging success in a heterosexual marriage.
Andrew would probably call himself a success by his own lights, even if he's a failure as a human being. He's gotten away with the sleaze, and a whole lot of dirty money, and he's probably proud of that.

His mummy literally pinned then on him. They're as real as a "World's Best Son" coffee mug. These people wear uniforms without service and put crowns on their heads because people let them. It means nothing and the BRF is just a pack of grifters living on the dole, nothing more. How stupid that the people of the UK let them.

by Anonymous | reply 173 | September 18, 2022 2:41 PM |
R7, Philip was good-looking thanks to his mother Alice, maternal grandfather Louis of Battenberg and paternal grandmother Olga Constantinovna of Russia, but there was enough ugliness in the Danish/Greek royal family to understand that he was very much an accident - especially if we take into account that several of his sisters were trolls themselves.
Elizabeth was never, ever, ever pretty, let alone beautiful. Her father and grandfather could be best described as awkward-looking, and her mother put a capital P on 'plain'. Also, the entire Battenberg/Windsor family have inherited Mary of Teck's monkey face, whose own mother Mary Adelaide of Cambridge, looked like Benny Hill in drag.
If the subsequent generations of royals are ugly, it's because there has never really been much beauty in the majority of royal families.
by Anonymous | reply 174 | September 18, 2022 2:59 PM |
R174 Haha, one of the reasons I can appreciate the royal family is that unlike the majority of celebrities you get totally ordinary-looking people in those positions just because of their birth.
by Anonymous | reply 175 | September 18, 2022 3:03 PM |
R169, Your describing him as unattractive and short prompted my question. Andrew, at 6 feet tall, has never been described as either, especially 21 years ago. You must be confusing him with someone else.
by Anonymous | reply 176 | September 18, 2022 3:11 PM |
The problem isn't that they are ordinary-looking or even ugly, R175. The problem is that they are not intelligent or talented, and their behaviour isn't any better than that of a bunch of chavs who get drunk in the pub on a Saturday night, and end up in bed with anyone who says 'yes'. One would expect that their education would amount to something more than developing a plummy accent but, sadly, that seems to be the whole extent of it all.
The truly preoccupying thing is that this isn't something exclusive to the Battenberg/Windsor family. The truth is that the members of most royal families are not only lacking in the looks department, but they also end up coming very short in the brains, talent, class and decorum departments.
by Anonymous | reply 177 | September 18, 2022 3:12 PM |
R176 I can 100% confirm that Andrew is nowhere near 6ft. In person he is very short. Probably about 5ft6 or 5ft7. I know that he claims otherwise but it's simply not true. by Anonymous | reply 179 | September 18, 2022 3:21 PM |
R179 Here's the Maul on Patrick Plunket, hinting away.
"A former guardsman who captured the Queen's heart spent 25 years by her side and was a rock to her when her marriage hit hard times.
Patrick Plunket had been close friends with Her Majesty since childhood, and was one of her closest confidants.
He was eventually appointed as Deputy Master of the Household, and royal author Christopher Wilson says no man has even been that close to her - apart from her husband Prince Philip.
Patrick inherited the family title at just 15 from his father Lord Terence Plunket (right), 6th Baron Plunket, here with his wife and eldest son at the Fourth of June Eton celebrations in June 1937
Patrick inherited the family title at just 15 from his father Lord Terence Plunket (right), 6th Baron Plunket, here with his wife and eldest son at the Fourth of June Eton celebrations in June 1937
Writing in The Sun, Mr Wilson told how the pair were so close that in 1975, when the bachelor died from liver cancer aged 51, she was so distraught she ordered a royal funeral for him at St James's Palace.
A memorial temple was then built to him in Windsor Great Park, and she is still a regular visitor there were she pays her respects.
Patrick's father, Irish peer Lord Plunket, had been a close friend of Elizabeth's parents, then the Duke and Duchess of York. His mother Dorothé was a half American heiress.
But they both died in a plane crash in 1938 when Patrick was just 15-years-old and he inherited the family title.
A memorial temple was then built to Patrick Plunket at Windsor Great Park, and she is a regular visit to the temple to pay her respects
Plunket was often photographed by her side, including here when she opened Calder Hall, Cumberland, the world's first full-scale atomic power station
In World War Two he served in the Irish Guards, then became an equerry for Elizabeth's father, King George VI.
When Elizabeth became Queen, she appointed him Deputy Master of the Household.
Plunket's cousin, Lady Annabel Goldsmith, told The Sun: 'He adored her from the outset.
'They enjoyed a very special connection. He was the one member of her staff who could talk to her on equal terms.
'There was an openness and honesty between them based on respect, friendship — and a lot of teasing.'
In 1956, when Prince Philip went on a world tour for four months, Plunket helped her cope with being alone.
The tour of 1956 put pressure on the marriage and reports started appearing in the US press about a rift. But Plunket was by her side throughout the crisis.
Lady Goldsmith said: 'He was tall, impeccably dressed, with a voice full of merriment and his eyes crinkled up with laughter.'
Philip finally came home and the royal marriage was rekindled.
And royal biographer Charles Higham added: 'He was slender, handsome, with thinning, dark hair and aristocratic profile.
'The Queen was very fond of him, very probably in love with him.'"

I love this. I will argue this to the death and am enjoying it because I just know 100% for myself because I have actually met him and experienced him and know that he is nowhere near 6ft. So I feel very confident. This a bunch of people who have never met him who are wedded to what he claims of himself - even when he is fairly obviously a liar. Weird, really.

by Anonymous | reply 226 | September 18, 2022 6:50 PM |
I .. honestly I would SWEAR in court that he's 5ft8 max. It was almost shocking how short he was. And he was extremely confident, standing buck straight. Very very straight, so zero slumping.

Andrew has confidence for sure. 100%. He has tons and tons of confidence. That's what I noticed. But he's also very short and ugly. There is almost nothing attractive about him in person. If you saw him in the street you'd look away instantly. He looks hot in some pictures but in person it isn't there. I am telling you the truth. I guess that's why he had to use Epstein to get girls, and married Fergie.

Even celebheights (who have never met these people themselves) thinks that Charles is 5ft 8.5 and that Diana was 5ft9.5.

"Elizabeth was never, ever, ever pretty, let alone beautiful."
She was slightly pretty in photos as a young woman, and I suspect that she and Margaret were quite pretty in person. The camera loves angular faces and tiny noses, but those girls had beautiful complexions, soft features, big blue eyes, and great figures. They were probably looked smashing in real life.
by Anonymous | reply 240 | September 18, 2022 8:37 PM |
The Queen was never beautiful, or pretty. She was plain. Why do people want to argue otherwise? Because she's the Queen, I suppose - but it still doesn't make it actually true, does it?
by Anonymous | reply 241 | September 18, 2022 8:39 PM |
She and Margaret were pretty, in the way that, really, all young women are pretty.
by Anonymous | reply 242 | September 18, 2022 8:41 PM |
Would argue that she still wasn't pretty. She was pretty fugly even at 25. It's just the fact that she was the Queen that clouds people's perspectives. Try to imagine her as a dirt poor nobody and see how pretty/beautiful you find her.

[R46], Agreed. I get the tradition and history, but this is 2022; we are not equals if I’m made to walk behind you.
The entire idea of a monarchy and a line of succession precludes the entire idea of equality whether it is 2022 or 1066. The older son of the monarch HAS to be more important than the second son, because he is heir to the throne and the second-in-line is now only fifth in line and will likely never inherit it.
Harry can NEVER be equal to William because he is the second-born. Nothing can change that in a monarchical system of primogeniture, no matter how much the rest of society changes.
I am baffled as to why you and others cannot understand that. The only way to change it would be to do away with the monarchy entirely--now, that may be what you ultimately want, but then we would not be watching them on television.

by Anonymous | reply 283 | September 18, 2022 11:08 PM |
Elizabeth was pretty, not beautiful.
I saw her in middle age, up close (totally by accident, just happened to pass as she was doing a walk about). Even then, she was attractive. She had the most beautiful complexion/skin I have ever seen. I can only imagine how luminous it was when she was young. She was also very tiny, and not overweight.
As for Andrew and Edward, given their children have features from Philip’s family, there is no chance anyone but Philip was their father.

by Anonymous | reply 286 | September 19, 2022 10:34 PM |
The comment about her skin is true. I saw her when she was in her 70s and her skin still had a glowing quality.
It’s not absurd royalism to acknowledge she was above average in looks until she reached late. middle age. People grossly exaggerate how unattractive she was and grossly exaggerate how attracted Diana was. Neither was a fashion model.
by Anonymous | reply 287 | September 19, 2022 10:41 PM |
R287, Diana was stunning. A lot of it was her height, as well as her comparing favorably to her peers, who were decidedly not models. Nevertheless, she really was a beautiful woman.

Diana was a handsome woman. She was very well put together and she wore clothes better than anyone else. She had a great presence. Facially, though nowhere near stunning or even pretty, unless we’re going by British standards.
by Anonymous | reply 291 | September 19, 2022 11:10 PM |
I disagree, r291, she was very pretty facially as well--maybe not model-worthy, but she was conventionally very pretty.
by Anonymous | reply 292 | September 19, 2022 11:24 PM |
"People grossly exaggerate how unattractive she was and grossly exaggerate how attracted Diana was."
Diana was fantastically photogenic, and the Queen was not. The Queen was probably incredibly pretty in person when she was young, with her lovely skin and big blue eyes, but while women with soft features and irregular noses can be pretty in person, the camera loves angular features like Diana's.
Diana had the real movie-star charisma, the camera fell madly in love with her and she dazzled in any kind of filmed media, so of course she became a star in the media age. She was probably very good-looking in person as well, if not model perfect, but well. Being photogenic was the only advantage she ever had over the queen.

by Anonymous | reply 298 | September 20, 2022 1:59 AM |
From all the pictures I've seen of Elizabeth and Margaret when they were young they are pretty in all of them. Saying all young women are pretty in their way would be to say all young men are good looking in their way and we know that isn't in the least bit true. A lot of young men are homely. Youth is not enough.
by Anonymous | reply 299 | September 20, 2022 2:03 AM |
R295/296 Those pics don't refute it. Harry is clearly a few inches taller and Charles has to be tiny. The Queen and Margaret both were; they must have got it from her.
by Anonymous | reply 300 | September 20, 2022 2:10 AM |
The Queen was horse-faced her entire life. Of course a bunch of gay royalists on DL are falling all over themselves to proclaim how "pretty" she was.
by Anonymous | reply 301 | September 20, 2022 2:16 AM |
Re: height, I actually think that one of the issues is that so many men lie about height and that the average height is actually shorter than what people think it is in most countries. So they see Andrew and see someone who looks like normal height to them (the average male height in the UK is 5ft9) but because so many men lie, they perceive it to be 6ft.
by Anonymous | reply 302 | September 20, 2022 2:26 AM |
Look at how little the Queen and Philip look next to the Obamas. We know that Barack Obama has been reliably measured (by a White House physician) as 6f1, correct? We can pretty much infer from this picture that Philip and the Queen were likely both significantly shorter. So then you can look at photos of Philip, Andrew and Charles and see that they look about the same height. Also, Andrew has truly excellent posture - he always stands up very straight - while Charles does not.
The only truly 'tall' members of the immediate RF are William, Harry and Kate, Diana (when she was alive) was definitely tall for a woman. I met her and she was tall and glamorous. I would not say strictly beautiful but 100% bucketloads of charisma and presence.
by Anonymous | reply 303 | September 20, 2022 2:49 AM |
r303, I would imagine that both the queen and Prince Philip got much shorter as they aged. Prince Philip was supposedly 6'0" when he was younger, and he does look fairly tall in younger photos.
by Anonymous | reply 304 | September 20, 2022 2:55 AM |
R304 You are right that people usually get shorter when they age but I still don't believe that he was tall. I think he looked tall next to the Queen. And that his sons aren't tall either. They are all average or below average height. I don't know why this is so hard for people to believe either. I've encountered Andrew and physically seen it for myself anyway, so it's the hill I'm going to die on.
by Anonymous | reply 305 | September 20, 2022 2:58 AM |
Pics with Diana were routinely staged to make Charles look taller than her when they were about the same height (approximately 5ft8). For no reason but sexism (man must be taller) but it shows how images get manipulated. Diana would be sitting on a chair, Charles on the armrest, or Diana would have to slouch. Then when they got divorced Diana stopped giving a fuck and started wearing heels which made her 5ft10 or even more.
by Anonymous | reply 306 | September 20, 2022 3:07 AM |
I love this one - the photographer had Diana sit on some kind of metal or stone post so that she would look shorter than Charles. Another trick they used was to photograph them on steps - Charles standing on a higher step than Diana behind her.
