Hey R4,
Have you ever heard this version of her song from 5 years ago?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | September 13, 2022 3:27 AM |
Astrud Gilberto, then Nancy, then Dionne.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | September 13, 2022 5:11 AM |
Judy...because she was the best.

Nancy didn't do very well in the poll. She was more or less a one hit wonder as a solo singer (I know there were a few other but who remembers them?)
by Anonymous | reply 16 | September 13, 2022 10:41 AM |
I loved the albums Nancy made with Lee Hazlewood. She's had a pop cultural revival in recent years, mostly thanks to Quentin Tarantino and Lana del Rey, I suppose. I don't consider her a one-hit wonder at all.

Aretha and Barbra- two of the greatest ever for much longer than the 60s.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | September 13, 2022 2:57 PM |
A-HEM!
by Anonymous | reply 19 | September 13, 2022 5:59 PM |
Diana Ross
by Anonymous | reply 21 | September 13, 2022 6:11 PM |
I presume OP omitted Barbra on purpose...for reasons well-known to her.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | September 13, 2022 7:08 PM |
Mary Wells is quite underrated but I voted for Dusty Springfield. Dusty could sing it all.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | September 13, 2022 7:09 PM |
I'll pray for you to have better judgment.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | September 13, 2022 7:11 PM |
And what of me, OP?!!! The greatest female singer of all time!
by Anonymous | reply 26 | September 13, 2022 7:17 PM |
Verdelle Smith only had a couple of hits out in the 1960's but her voice was great and so were her songs: "Tar And Cement" and "In My Room."

Nancy Sinatra had a pleasant, adequate voice and had a successful career from the mid to late 1960's. She received 3 gold records and pretty much had all the right moves so she obviously was doing something right. Like her a lot.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | September 14, 2022 3:15 AM |
R29 She got my vote too!!!
by Anonymous | reply 30 | September 14, 2022 3:23 AM |
My favorite female singer from the 60's? They call her Miss Ross. Her being my favorite doesn't necessarily mean I thought Diana was the best singer. That would be Aretha or Dusty imo.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | September 14, 2022 4:43 AM |
I thought the Americans had a thing about Lulu and THIS song
by Anonymous | reply 32 | September 14, 2022 6:29 AM |
I F&Fed the OP for leaving off Diana Ross.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | September 14, 2022 6:42 AM |
Mama Cass had a wonderful voice. So did Connie Francis and Eydie Gorme. Streisand was huge. Diana sang nasally but had a lot of hits.

[quote]I F&Fed the OP for leaving off Diana Ross.
She was part of a GROUP and GROUP sound in the '60s - OP was right not to include her. VERY right.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | September 14, 2022 3:20 PM |
R35, so Mama Cass and Ronnie Spector are disqualified?
by Anonymous | reply 36 | September 14, 2022 4:19 PM |
Mama Cass went solo long before the 60s ended.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | September 14, 2022 4:30 PM |
A female singer is a female singer. Doesn't matter if she sang solo or as part of a "group." Most "groups" in those days were just singers backed by studio musicians, so the distinction is particularly arbitrary for the 1960s period. Diana Ross was no different than Aretha Franklin in terms of how she worked; both were lead singers with accompanying vocalists and backing bands.

For those who voted for Diana Ross, she sang with The Supremes in the 1960's and did not go on a solo career until 1970. That's why she is not included on the poll.
Op.

I prefer disco-era Diana.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | September 14, 2022 6:35 PM |
All the leads of groups are on most lists of best female singers in the 60s. Diana Ross was one of the most recognizable voices then and carried the group to 12 number one songs. I feel the same about Gladys and Tina Turner. The thread title mentions favorite female singers—not favorite single/solo female singers.

I voted for Lesley Gore. She was my favorite singer in 1963, when I started buying records. I liked her, the Beach Boys, and Phil Spector's girl groups.

Love all the women discussed already, but can we include international divas as well?
I suppose Dalida isn’t just 60’s - she had hits from the 50’s through the 80’s before taking her life. This is a lesser known one from the 60’s that I love.

WHERE IS LULU, YOU FETID CUNT???
by Anonymous | reply 46 | September 14, 2022 10:30 PM |
Voted for Dusty, but I love all those women
by Anonymous | reply 47 | September 14, 2022 10:36 PM |
Barbara Dane
by Anonymous | reply 48 | September 14, 2022 10:36 PM |
Timi Yuro
by Anonymous | reply 49 | September 14, 2022 10:39 PM |
R6 and others - "It's Gonna Take A Miracle" is an old Motown song, not one that Laura Nyro wrote, though I do love all the songs Laura and LaBelle did on that record.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | September 14, 2022 10:54 PM |
Patsy Cline
by Anonymous | reply 51 | September 14, 2022 10:56 PM |
May I also present the criminally underrated Marilyn McCoo (also with Florence LaRue)
by Anonymous | reply 54 | September 14, 2022 11:27 PM |
Gladys Knight
by Anonymous | reply 56 | September 14, 2022 11:46 PM |
Grace Slick

^she should have sat on her hands when she sang.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | September 15, 2022 2:00 AM |
Judy Garland
by Anonymous | reply 61 | September 15, 2022 2:40 AM |
Another vote for Diana Ross, though like R31 I don't think she was the best vocally. She was, however, the lead singer on more of my favorite songs than any two of the others.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | September 15, 2022 3:14 AM |
Tina Turner
by Anonymous | reply 63 | September 15, 2022 3:29 AM |
Dusty's hand gestures were all part of her charm!
by Anonymous | reply 64 | September 15, 2022 3:30 AM |
Seriously, is it Pe-TOO-la or PE-chu-la?
by Anonymous | reply 65 | September 15, 2022 3:45 AM |
Connie Francis by far, but mostly for her LP material, although I did like many of her hits. The LP recordings were just in a different category. I also liked Rosemary Clooney, although not really 60s, and not for her hits. I'll Be Seeing You is my favorite recvording of hers.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | September 15, 2022 3:55 AM |
Tori Amos and Madonna.
