Former James Bond actor George Lazenby pulled from remainder of theatre run after unspecified homophobic comments

Comments made during a Bond themed theatre show that were found to be offensive by some who then complained have resulted in George being pulled from the remainder of the show. Comments made about sexual conquests also upset some. However the article frustratingly does not say what these comments exactly were.

‘Back in the day, you bunch of ‘mos would be in an alley smoking my 007 fag.’

by Anonymousreply 1September 12, 2022 12:48 PM

r1 Just clarifying is this what he said or is this datalounge humour?

by Anonymousreply 2September 12, 2022 1:08 PM

We don’t know what homophobic means anymore.

by Anonymousreply 3September 12, 2022 1:18 PM

r3 That's why I want to know what the comments are rather than just accepting they were homophobic because some have claimed they are.

by Anonymousreply 4September 12, 2022 1:36 PM

I thought he died several years ago

by Anonymousreply 5September 12, 2022 1:53 PM

J'accuse!

by Anonymousreply 6September 12, 2022 1:53 PM

They won't even say what his supposedly horrible comments were. Could they possibly be any worse than the contents of the film series itself (especially in the '60s and '70s)? I doubt it.

Are we going to castigate everybody who lives long enough for their views to become "problematic"?

by Anonymousreply 7September 12, 2022 1:54 PM

They could easily have been of the “women are women” variety and not really homophobic.

by Anonymousreply 8September 12, 2022 1:56 PM

Any more sexist and homophobic and literally violent than Fleming's novels?

by Anonymousreply 9September 12, 2022 1:56 PM

There's homophobic and then Twitter homophobic. I need to know what he said.

by Anonymousreply 10September 12, 2022 1:59 PM

That’s funny because I’ve always thought that George Lazenby was a FAIRY 🧚‍♂️ himself.

by Anonymousreply 11September 12, 2022 2:05 PM

What does his ex wife, notorious heterosexual Pamela Howard Shriver have to say?

by Anonymousreply 12September 12, 2022 2:08 PM

Whatever he said you can be sure it was;

Literal violence!

by Anonymousreply 13September 12, 2022 2:10 PM

r11 Oh?? What made you think that?!

by Anonymousreply 14September 12, 2022 2:41 PM

George Lazenby has always been a colossal train wreck drunk or sober, but he's usually drunk.

[Quote] I thought he died several years ago

He did but he's a trouper.

by Anonymousreply 16September 12, 2022 3:31 PM

R14- He just seems/seemed like a gay male to me especially as James Bond. In fact I think ALL of the actors who have ever portrayed James Bond were of the HOMOSEXUAL persuasion.

by Anonymousreply 17September 12, 2022 5:07 PM

r17 Even Sean Connery??!!😮

by Anonymousreply 26September 12, 2022 6:15 PM

R18- Sorry, but yes. Including Sean Connery.

by Anonymousreply 27September 12, 2022 7:04 PM

He's 83. He's still living in the 1970's. What the fuck did they expect?

I think it's a tragedy that people like him are being escorted off the stage for saying something the audience didn't approve of. We're more and ore living in a fascism of the left.

by Anonymousreply 28September 12, 2022 7:59 PM

R28- He’s not heterosexual.

by Anonymousreply 29September 12, 2022 8:17 PM

He basically said he had sex with a thousand women because he could.

Because he didn't include any men, gays called him homophobic.

by Anonymousreply 30September 12, 2022 8:33 PM

Holy hell. I'm a woman but I'm too busy to take offence at every shit. This trend is so tedious. We should all stop apologizing.

by Anonymousreply 31September 12, 2022 9:03 PM

by Anonymousreply 38September 13, 2022 1:40 AM

It couldn’t possibly be as icky when I attended a senior center talk and heard 90 something Lee Grant talk about giving Warren Beatty a blowjob while shooting Shampoo.

Lazenby should have read his audience better. But did no one record this?

“According to one audience member, Lazenby spent Saturday's interview "talking about basically his sexual conquests.”

"He was homophobic, he swore, he certainly wasn't talking about his Bond movies," she told Perth radio station 6PR. "He downplayed the Queen a day after she died," she added.

"It was absolutely unbelievable… At one point he named an Australian cricketer whose daughter he was chasing, and he said he dragged the daughter out of a pub and put her in a car in London, which again is of course horrific.

"It wasn't even charming, it wasn't even funny. It was creepy, it was offensive... He was disgusting, there's no two ways about it."

Another attendee described the interview as the "self-interested misogynistic stories of George Lazenby's sexual prowess, intimate details of diarrhoea and objectification of women."

"It wasn't until a brave member of the public shouted, 'Excuse me, this is offensive', that the tension was released and George was jeered off stage and music saved the day," they told The West Australian newspaper.

Concertgoer Joseph McCormack said on Twitter that at least one audience member "called out the offence that Lazenby was causing" during the show.

A second caller to 6PR defended the actor, saying his stories were a deliberate "exaggeration" for comedic effect.

"He didn't kidnap [anyone], there was no rape. People were just getting so woke. [The show] was very entertaining until people were yelling out and booing."

The BBC has not been able to independently verify the nature of Lazenby's comments.”

by Anonymousreply 45September 13, 2022 2:55 AM

From R39 it sounds like his homophobia was the least of it. No one wants to hear all that skeeviness, much less pay to hear it.

"Oh George, don’t you remember the time in Norway, you and group of fabulous bond girls giving an interview? You regaled us with tales of how you bedded most of the actresses you worked with. Even my husband, @VinnieTortorich was horrified. We were just too polite to say anything!"

What the hell did he say? None of the articles repeats what he said. R39 gives a hint, but not his actual words.

Everyone is a maiden aunt or an uptight vicar these days. Stop getting so easily offended over little.

It was probably boorish and loutish. It's coming from a model who couldn't act his way out of a wet, brown paper bag. He had one starring role in a film. He's an Australian man of a certain age. What did people expect from him? A critique of the swinging sixties?

At the end of The Guardian article he said that in his heyday he had sex with countless women and could have sex with them in a dy as long as he could get it up. It's earthy, off color humor from an Australian man in his 80s from a working class background. He's boorish. Until we learn what he said, that's all he is.

by Anonymousreply 56September 13, 2022 3:53 AM

Because, R54, nobody wants to sit in the audience and listen to his crap.

by Anonymousreply 57September 13, 2022 3:53 AM

This tiny incident occurred in front of people of no consequence.

by Anonymousreply 63September 13, 2022 4:29 AM

Seriously? It's uncouth to talk about sex but it doesn't warrant firing from a stage play. Especially for a guy THIS fucking old. What is he going to do? Molest you with his dentures?

by Anonymousreply 64September 13, 2022 4:35 AM

The supposedly homophobic comments may have been something to do with a story he frequently tells about the Bond producers "testing" his sexuality by sending hookers up to his hotel room (which he dutifully enjoyed). They didn't want a Nancy boy playing 007 back in 1969.

by Anonymousreply 65September 13, 2022 4:44 AM

The real question is: who goes to a concert of James Bond music? I mean get Shirley Bassey and Sheena Easton and Paul McCartney together and yea…but this was a symphony! It sounds like something Muriel’s parents in Muriel’s Wedding would consider high culture.

Did they perform Die Another Day? Has Madonna weighed in yet?

Lazenby had to provide sexy talk to match that sexy music.

by Anonymousreply 71September 13, 2022 5:11 AM

"Yeah, his comments were off-color, but seriously, people need to get a grip and step being traumatized, or in this case dickmatized, by every little thing."

Weird, I don't remember anyone defending Jonah Hill when he made homophobic comments. I guess you guys are giving Lazenby a free pass because you jerked off to him back in the day but won't defend the homophobes who happen to be ugly

by Anonymousreply 72September 13, 2022 5:13 AM

I assume he said "I hate faggots" because that is not being said. Surely he said he detests faggots because what else could be so awful that it can't be said. It's not possibly a young upstart who was sexually rejected by him. I'm sure he said something like "fuck off, young faggot, begone" or something like that.

by Anonymousreply 78September 13, 2022 8:08 AM

That was more than a hint, r56. It was a whole list of comments from bragging that he kidnapped a woman to talking about his diarrhea. Don't give us an essay about the evils of woke when the premise -- that we don't know what he said -- is a lie.

by Anonymousreply 79September 13, 2022 8:14 AM

[quote]He didn't kidnap [anyone], there was no rape. People were just getting so woke.

It's true that Lazenby is a notorious liar. It gets mentioned in shows and documentaries about Bond movies all the time. Lazenby was interviewed extensively for a documentary a few years ago, and it was clear most of his stories were exaggerations, if not outright lies. However, they were passed off as either true, or hilarious anecdotes that captured the spirit of the event, as well as Lazenby's allegedly winning personality.

Time has moved on, and people in 2022 aren't generally old enough to know that Lazenby's reputation is that of a liar and raconteur. You could see this in the reviews for the documentary in 2017, as people reported his stories as being true, unaware that Lazenby has made a living by being a liar.

It's also the professional raconteur's job to know his audience, and if he hasn't figured out that stories about kidnapping and raping girls aren't seen as cool and funny anymore, then he's not doing his job right.

by Anonymousreply 80September 13, 2022 8:24 AM

R79, points taken. Talking about his sexual, conquests, diarrhea, and chasing then forcing a young woman is disgusting, vulgar, and, indeed, offensive.

[quote] Don't give us an essay about the evils of woke when the premise -- that we don't know what he said -- is a lie.

But don't call me a liar, buddy. And "the essay about the evil if woke" stands.

by Anonymousreply 81September 13, 2022 12:32 PM

These "night at the movies" concerts (or live film accompaniments) keep a lot of symphony orchestras in the black. Such is the state of culture today.

by Anonymousreply 85September 13, 2022 2:03 PM

r67 It's just not the same without a massive backdrop screen of undulating female silhouettes. Perhaps that's why Lazenby was on hand to chatter about all the pussy he ate.

by Anonymousreply 86September 13, 2022 2:57 PM

Him having to constantly talk about what an amazing stud he is does seem like he's overcompensating. Bragging about it is generally a turn off to women as well - they don't generally want to be another one in a long line.

by Anonymousreply 87September 13, 2022 3:06 PM

Though I find the habit of denouncing people in the press, without actually telling us what was exactly said more than annoying; I think they had their right to remove him from the stage. The spokesperson for the venue said this was meant to be "family friendly", and there were children present, so it's perfectly within their rights to make such decisions. If you say outrageous things the audience heckles you for, saying it is offensive, you must take ownership for your words. I suppose he did by his apology.

Perhaps he isn't a homophobe... we shall not be able to make our own decisions about that until we know what was said. But absolutely they're within their rights.

by Anonymousreply 88September 13, 2022 3:08 PM

[quote] No one wants to hear all that skeeviness, much less pay to hear it.

I do. I want to hear everything, not filtered through wokeness but raw, the way they experienced it in that generation, not regurgitated to please modern audiences. We won't get anywhere by trying to erase what happened and avoiding how they felt about it.

by Anonymousreply 89September 13, 2022 5:41 PM

R89 I think there is a time and a place for everything, and I personally wouldn't be offended by his bawdy reminiscing, but his spontaneous recollections were not planned as part of the programme. If there are elegantly turned out families, at an evening marketed like that, he's made a faux pas.

Can't you concede that? ( and that certain older people sometimes get carried away with impromptu storytelling.) How does this need to become a woke-v-you moment? They were not at a cabaret, or adults only venue.

As we don't know the alleged homophobic remark, and you were not there, how can you be so confident it is a modern thing? My folks were not prudes, but if they had taken us somewhere to enjoy some jazzy orchestral music, and it was considered a special evening out, I can't see them revelling in tales about diarrhoea, sexual conquests, etc. especially with three children in tow.

by Anonymousreply 90September 13, 2022 11:44 PM

Now I suspect Lazenby is the OP of the surprisingly popular Datalounge diarrhea thread.

R39 he just sounds like a charmless, dirty, demented, entitled old man, a product of his vile age and era. Which is sad and gross, but not exactly pinpoint bigoted monstrosity worthy of cancellation--that's giving the withered bastard too much credit. He probably didn't even know what he was blathering about or who he was talking to. Most females today probably cross the road to avoid him, except his poor nurses.

He's a laughing-stock now (good), and he'll be dead pretty soon, so who gives a fuck if he told an off-colour tone-deaf story about a conquest decades ago. It's not worth clickbait outrage, a waste of bandwidth.

I guarantee that in forty years those "elegantly turned out families" with all their outraged Karens will be reminiscing with pleasure about their 'brush with fame' with James Bond.

Just like the eldergays I know glow when reminiscing about the time they saw Marlene Dietrich fall off the stage into the orchestra pit.
