Her acting was so relaxed, natural, and genuine. She blew Oscar winner Tatum O'Neal off the screen in Little Darlings, with her honesty and simplicity. I remember reading an interview with Dinah Manoff, who guest-starred on Family back in the late '70s, then starred with McNichol a decade later, in Empty Nest. She said something about McNichol not needing to prepare for a scene they shared in Family. McNichol just glanced at the script once, got in front of the camera, and turned in a knock-out performance. She had a special gift.

R38 believe or not Christy had become so powerful in Hollywood that when the Carpenters wanted her back for the next Christmas special, she strong armed them to have to take Jimmy as well. Richard especially did not care for Jimmy, but it was a package deal, both or none so they had to put up with his terrible Christmas caterwauling. Kristy McNichol was everywhere for a time when I was a kid... I remember her as being a very natural actress as well, and yes, she was so much better than Tatum in "Little Darlings" (God, there's a movie with an awful premise).

Every once in a while you hear about her and I'm always pleased to read that she settled into a quiet private life and seems stable, low-key and probably healthy.

Same for Jimmy... married once, children, has a career and maintains a low-profile.

Some years back, I watched one of those "Where Are They Now?" type shows and it was mentioned Kristy was teaching drama classes at a private high school in LA. She also bought rental properties when she was young and makes off those as well.

You know you're in trouble when Dinah Manoff is cast to make you seem fuckable.

I remember seeing a clip of her Emmy acceptance. She was befuddled and was laughing and crying at the same time. She was a teen. Probably exhausted.

Yes, she was the better actress, but Tatum had that movie-star "it" factor that Kristy just did not have. Tatum's face and expressions were made for the big screen.

Oh please, Tatum O'Neal was no movie star. She was a horrible actress and painful to watch once she became a teenager. She did not have the talent to push past the sometimes very easy to do smart-mouth kid performance. Kristy had talent. Unfortunately, she was harder to cast and didn't always get the best projects.

She did a controversial 1982 film called WHITE DOG that had a troubled release.

White Dog is a pretty good film. She doesn't really get a chance to do too much in it, but it's at least a decent project. Mostly she made stinkers. The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia, The Pirate Movie, Just the Way You Are, Dream Lover, Two Moon Junction... Other than Little Darlings and Only When I Laugh, the roles just weren't there for her.

Tatum was so pretty in Little Darlings and I thought she was fine, the character is just not as interesting as McNichols. Apparantly Tatum was given her choice of roles and chose Ferris probably because she was sick of playing tomboy types, though it was the better part. I agree McNichol was the better actor, but Tatum was such a fresh-faced beauty at the time, I'm surprised she didn't capitalize on it and work more. She seemingly worked every five years when she was at the peak of her fame and could choose parts.

Kristy was diagnosed as being bipolar at some point. I think her parents did a number on her.

But she's been out of the spotlight for a while and seems to be blooming where she's planted now.

When did her and actress Elisabeth Brooks supposedly dated? Cause I've seen a few articles saying they were together until Brooks' death (1997). Someone even mentioned that on an old thread about Kristy. But Wiki says she's been with her, now wife, since the early 90s.
