Showers were pretty rare before the 20th century. Before indoor plumbing, showers could only be brought about by having tubs of water above your head with holes pierced in them to let gravity bring water down on you, and that would be pretty hard to set up for multiple people to shower at once.

My grade school didn't have a gym. But during those same years (mid 1960's) I would meet my dad at the YMCA every Friday after school and we would swim.
