Erik Anderson @ TIFF: I loved BROS so much. Funny, heartfelt, slightly savage, our You’ve Got Mail and more. Come for the gay sex and romance, stay for a Renée Zellweger joke for the ages.
@TomiLaffly: Nicholas Stoller’s rom-com BROS was a riot. Loved. Didn’t stop laughing.
Dancin' Dan @ #TIFF22: The importance of the mere existence of BROS cannot be understated, so it gives me great pleasure to report that it isn’t just a great gay romcom, nor just a great romcom, it’s a great film PERIOD. Line for line the funniest film of the year, and a milestone for Hollywood .
Doug Jamieson @ #TIFF22: BROS might just end up being the funniest film of the year. And one of the most lovable. The screenplay is an absolute dream. So sharp. So insightful. And utterly hysterical. Billy Eichner and Luke Macfarlane are a match made in heaven. Loved every damn second

R13 Oh yuck.
It’s like a movie for the white gay bestie of a white frau. It follows a frau storyline, a frumpy mediocre looking person getting the hot guy who’s crazy about them.
If it was ironic it would be one thing but it looks like it takes that angle seriously.
Not to be Debbie Downer but it seems like the studio is pushing this as a political agenda over actual believing in the movie.

From worst review so far:
"However, it defeats its own message of bringing queer history and queer life out of the margins when it centers the love story between two cis, conventionally attractive white gay men. Eichner is the first to point out his privilege; early on his character wins an award at an LGBTQ gala for Best Cis White Gay Man of the Year. But being self-aware isn’t as impactful as de-centering the cis white gay man as the lead, especially when every other queer character in the film still remains on the margins of the story. "
Hmm, this might actually be good!
by Anonymous | reply 41 | September 10, 2022 6:22 PM |
I suppose writers and filmmakers bear the burden of this cis nonsense and the practicalities of being unable to cram full stories for every character into 120 minutes. And even if they did they'd be shitkicked for appropriating marginal stories.
The upside is we're all rapidly enter who gives a fuck? territory.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | September 10, 2022 6:37 PM |
They should have just had one of the characters go "actually I am nonbinary" and then that would mean it wouldn't be a love story between two gay white men but a love story between a gay man and a non-binary which doesn't count as man anymore because they said so.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | September 11, 2022 1:22 AM |
I DESPISE the portmanteau "romcom"!
It is so overused, it's worse than "stigma", but sounds much dopier! Stop saying it!
by Anonymous | reply 44 | September 11, 2022 3:33 AM |
I saw this today. 2.5 is more than fair.
I find Billy very whiny and unlikable. For most of the film, I wondered why Luke's character would even be interested in him. It's definitely a boost for Billy's ego.
The script needed another draft or two. They cram too much into two hours.
The supporting characters are all paper thin. None of them register as fully dimensional characters. There's a late hookup in the film that actually was more interesting than the main couple.
It's cute and entertaining but it could have been better.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | September 11, 2022 4:57 AM |
What’s the fantastic Rene Zellweger joke one of the reviews mentions, R45?
by Anonymous | reply 46 | September 11, 2022 5:29 AM |

Apparently there's some cameo from Debra Messing. Debra Messing sucks so much.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | September 12, 2022 9:56 AM |
Why are all Judd Apatow connected “comedies” always so over-long? This is 115 minutes (and no doubt there’ll be an extended version for home video). I don’t think comedies should run much over 90 minutes or they outstay their welcome. Nothing worse than when a light, breezy movie starts to sag.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | September 12, 2022 10:27 AM |
I assumed this movie came and went months ago. I saw the laugh-free trailer and felt I had seen the entire movie. It seems to be the gay equivalent of a minstrel show.

by Anonymous | reply 52 | September 12, 2022 4:06 PM |
The Debra Messing scenes should have been dropped. She's not funny in them and they just seem to be included so that Billy Eichner can say "Hey I have Debra Messing in my movie!!"
The movie is really just about two successful white guys finding love.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | September 12, 2022 6:40 PM |
I fail to see the problem with that. If trans people of color want to be represented as leads in a rom-com, Eichner and Stoller aren't holding guns to their heads preventing them from writing a script and pitching it to the studios.
Heck, maybe Jaye Davidson and Stephen Rea could be talked into starring in a comedic sequel to [italic]The Crying Game[/italic]. It's been three decades, maybe Fergus has been paroled from his murder sentence by now and he and Dil are having wacky adventures in Soho. She's a trans hair stylist with an air of tragedy and a frizzy 'do that was outdated in 1993; he's a former IRA assassin who's trying to explain a 30-year work history gap on his resume; together, they do brunch!

I agree r50. Apatow just won't let go and ends up bringing down the whole production. The one with ant-man and Apatow's wife (40 something?) would have been much more digestible if they had cut about half an hour out of it.
Many people on this site are jealous of Quentin Tarantino. I certainly am one of them. But if Sally Menke hadn't thrown a bunch of film on the floor, his movies would have been even more unbearable
Don't get me wrong. I love QT. But I sometimes have to wonder if Menke was cutting and slicing, or just letting everything fly. I think in the beginning (PF, RD), She was helping shape the movies. But as his head got bigger, her talent was less utilized. JB is one of my favorites. But it went to huge lengths to bring it all together.
Hateful 8, not so much

by Anonymous | reply 64 | September 13, 2022 8:35 AM |
I've been aware only of the broadest outline of the project., but learning that it's a Judd Apatow-linked film gives a lot of pause. He has his hand in a lot of pies it seems, and of the few that I can sit through ("Girls" is an exception, uneven and undisciplined as it was), most are so insubstantial that they fade like a dream before the end credits begin.
I don't hate Eichner, though, and outside of the obnoxious Billy In the Street persona, want to give him the benefit of the doubt for Difficult People, and even his acting in it. It's obvious even from the trailer/s that it tries too hard at too many things, but I'll see "Bros" in any case and hope it's better than the Apatow association suggests. Knowing now that there's a Debra Messinger role will be my cue for a piss break.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | September 13, 2022 9:17 AM |
What I don't really understand about this movie is why the main character has to be a podcaster / writer / whatever whose sole focus is on "queer' shit? His entire personality is gayness (or queerness as apparently "gay" is a dirty word now). If he's not looking for gay love he's talking about it and the history of queer this and that. His character is even part of a gay history museum project. This is all so obviously intended as Gay101 for a majority straight audience (and I don't blame them, they want to make a mainstream movie that makes a profit after all). I just thought we'd moved beyond this "I am gay and that's all I am" character trope years ago?

He talks about coming out, his agent's reaction to his desire to come out, whether he is on dating apps, and the one thing he wouldn't do in sex scenes in Bros. On one hand, I'm happy to see something like this being made, but then you hear about stuff like R66 and R16, and it really makes me just not care anymore. No doubt this is being made for a straight majority audience, and it will have all the old tropes.
As for the early reviews, who gives a fuck anymore when it's all such blatant over-hype that you can't even believe people are paid to do that for a living. It's not 'critique' by any means, it's PR shilling.
And honestly, who the hell came up with the idea of headlining Billy Eichner in it, of all people? Really? As a gay rom-com lead?
"However, it defeats its own message of bringing queer history and queer life out of the margins when it centers the love story between two cis, conventionally attractive white gay men. Oh this bullshit can fuck right off. If these folks are so pissed all the time that something gay actually centers on gay men, tough shit. Make your own damn movie.
