Elizabethan, Victorian, what’s the Charles era?

Well?

by Anonymousreply 33September 9, 2022 7:49 AM

Charleston

by Anonymousreply 1September 8, 2022 11:12 PM

OP I was wondering the same thing.

by Anonymousreply 2September 8, 2022 11:13 PM

Carolingian?

by Anonymousreply 3September 8, 2022 11:15 PM

The Caroline era. The term is derived from Carolus, the Latin for Charles.

Did every king and queen get dubbed an era or did that happen after they were around so many years and it could be classified as a long period in time aka an era. I mean, why did Victoria get one? Elizabeth?

by Anonymousreply 15September 8, 2022 11:35 PM

R6, Camilla Parker Bowles is a way too “on my way to fuck to your man provided this hunter doesn’t break it’s neck taking the next hedgerow” to ever be considered a frau.

Once Britain stopped owning so many places in the 20th century, it was all over.

In order to have an era, you have to actually reign for a few years, so give it a while. After Victoria died, Edward only reigned for 9 years, did he have an era?

by Anonymousreply 18September 8, 2022 11:46 PM

He did, R18.

The Tamponian Era

by Anonymousreply 20September 8, 2022 11:49 PM

It is time to divest the monarchy and reduce it to the bare minimum. Charles is of the counter culture Vietnam youth 70s generation that created a sea change from the steps of Low Library to the .

by Anonymousreply 21September 8, 2022 11:51 PM

Charlian, of course!

by Anonymousreply 22September 8, 2022 11:52 PM

r19, the only thing I've ever seen associated with the "Edwardian" era was "turn of the century electrical appliances and consumer electronic devices likely to cause death by electrocution".

I was saying from Low Library to.. and it shot off prematurely (low hanging fruit for the more simple minds here)... But it might be more interesting for you to finish my sentence.

by Anonymousreply 24September 8, 2022 11:55 PM

I’ve never heard anyone refer to the timespan of QEII’s reign as “Elizabethan.” People only use that word about the era of Elizabeth I. I doubt any word for Charles’ short time on the throne will come into use.

by Anonymousreply 25September 9, 2022 12:26 AM

The idea of an era named for a British monarch died with British hegemony, after WWI.

Once Britannia no longer ruled the waves, no one else gave a fuck. The United State put the crown of styles upon the brow of France (from whence, it could be argued, and was, by Americans, the British had wrongfully stolen it), then claimed it for themselves; everyone else did their own thing.

R26 What Charles's reign will be called will make for a conference paper presented some day by a bright eyed Reader at a university.

It's also hard to say what e2's reign will be called.

When she became heir to the throne, the sun was not setting on the British Empire. She saw great Britain bumped off its perch as the world super power. She saw brown people from the dismantled colonies settle in Britain. She saw it grudgingly join the European union and then leave it.

With her death it is the end of several eras.
