Western diet, sedentary lifestyle likely factors in global rise in cancer for adults 50 and under
Early onset cases of cancers of the breast, colon, esophagus, kidney, liver, and pancreas are among those that have risen worldwide since about 1990, according to a study by researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, and published this week in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology.
The likely culprit? Increasingly sedentary lifestyles and a Western diet chock-full of processed foods.
While increased detection of cancer at earlier ages plays a part in the rise in early onset cancer, enhanced screening alone does not account for the increase in 14 different types of cancer among under-50 adults from 2000 to 2012, researchers said.

They believe an ingredient in Red Bull and other top brands such as Celsius and Monster may be linked to bacteria in the gut that speeds up tumor growth.
Researchers in Florida theorize that cancer cells use taurine - an amino acid thought to improve mental clarity - as their 'primary energy source.'
At the world's biggest cancer conference this week, the team announced a new human trial that will test their hypothesis, which so far is based on animal studies.
They plan to discover whether drinking an energy drink every day causes levels of cancer-causing gut bacteria to rise.

My aunt was about 300 lbs., smoked, sat all day and lived on Vienna sausages and chips. She lived to 88.

It's a shame people don't like to exercise. I love it. It's just gravy that it's good for me.

The colon cancer/energy drinks connection seems tenuous, as energy drinks have been around for decades at this point and the stats don’t show the colon cancer rates of the last few years

It isn't solely junk foods. Meat consumption increases the risk of colon cancer, including smoked, charred and cured meats. Alcohol does as well. Those charcuterie trays are not your friend, Gen Zrs.

Yes, r28. Deli meat is especially bad as is meat cooked over charcoal. I got breast cancer and was told both of those they KNOW are linked to cancer.
Been cancer free for 3 years now but made some radical lifestyle changes. I now exercise 5-6 days per week for an hour at a time. I figure it's just an hour out of my day so it's not a big deal. I also eat less now and make my own meals. I don't drink but never really have. I maybe have a glass of wine 3 times a year.
Bonus to all this is that I've lost over 100 pounds and am healthier than I ever have been.

Genetics have plenty to do with it, too
Actually this is an excuse I hear all the time from fat people, having a family who encourages overeating and everyone follows suit is not genetics, stop this misinformation, people simply eat too much and then blame everything else. A big fat fried has insulin resistance, he thinks it's genetic and doesn't do anything to help himself because he has a medical condition, he's always been fat, that's the reason for insulin resistance, stupidity.

It’s incredibly hard to cut processed food entirely out of your diet. Even bread is considered processed food. So is cheese.
I cook every day, mostly because I can’t afford to order in or to go out for dinner on a regular basis — but also because when I cook, I KNOW what goes into the food. Very little fat, almost no salt…
