Western diet, sedentary lifestyle likely factors in global rise in cancer for adults 50 and under

Early onset cases of cancers of the breast, colon, esophagus, kidney, liver, and pancreas are among those that have risen worldwide since about 1990, according to a study by researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, and published this week in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology.

The likely culprit? Increasingly sedentary lifestyles and a Western diet chock-full of processed foods.

While increased detection of cancer at earlier ages plays a part in the rise in early onset cancer, enhanced screening alone does not account for the increase in 14 different types of cancer among under-50 adults from 2000 to 2012, researchers said.

We're eating ourselves to death

by Anonymousreply 2September 8, 2022 5:45 PM

YAAAAAAWWWWNNNNNN the latest media diet scare tactic.

by Anonymousreply 3September 8, 2022 6:30 PM

R3, yes, just a scare tactic. Eat away!!

by Anonymousreply 4September 8, 2022 6:36 PM

Bad diet and no exercise leads to disease?

How shocking! Who’d have thunk?

Colon cancer crisis in young people could be fueled by booming drinks brands adored by teens

by Anonymousreply 6June 4, 2024 9:10 PM

They believe an ingredient in Red Bull and other top brands such as Celsius and Monster may be linked to bacteria in the gut that speeds up tumor growth.

Researchers in Florida theorize that cancer cells use taurine - an amino acid thought to improve mental clarity - as their 'primary energy source.'

At the world's biggest cancer conference this week, the team announced a new human trial that will test their hypothesis, which so far is based on animal studies.

They plan to discover whether drinking an energy drink every day causes levels of cancer-causing gut bacteria to rise.

My aunt was about 300 lbs., smoked, sat all day and lived on Vienna sausages and chips. She lived to 88.

by Anonymousreply 8June 4, 2024 9:12 PM

Genetics have plenty to do with it, too.

by Anonymousreply 9June 4, 2024 9:17 PM

Fiber is key. Which bottoms already knew 😏

by Anonymousreply 10June 4, 2024 9:42 PM

I am scared now. I never drunk an enegery drink... except for the last two weeks. I drank 5 energy drinks in a span of 14 days. They had taurin. Will I now get cancer?

by Anonymousreply 11June 4, 2024 9:57 PM

R10 is this the new anti-cancer diet?

It's a shame people don't like to exercise. I love it. It's just gravy that it's good for me.

by Anonymousreply 13June 4, 2024 10:25 PM

They needed a study for this?!

by Anonymousreply 14June 4, 2024 10:58 PM

[quote] Colon cancer crisis in young people could be fueled by booming drinks brands adored by teens

Huh?

by Anonymousreply 15June 4, 2024 10:59 PM

The colon cancer/energy drinks connection seems tenuous, as energy drinks have been around for decades at this point and the stats don’t show the colon cancer rates of the last few years

by Anonymousreply 16June 5, 2024 2:12 AM

It wasn’t the diet, it was because they’re whores, or according to Rosie O’Donnell, liars. Lying whores, terminal!

by Anonymousreply 17June 5, 2024 2:46 AM

People on government assistance should not be allowed to buy junk food.

People not on government assistance should be taxed through the roof to buy junk food.

by Anonymousreply 18June 5, 2024 9:58 AM

Damn, I'm scared! I drink red bull all the time!

by Anonymousreply 19June 5, 2024 12:01 PM

R18, then it will become black market fodder and they'll waste even more money on it, with a good portion funding criminals.

by Anonymousreply 20June 5, 2024 12:26 PM

Exercising every day is like taking medicine.

by Anonymousreply 21June 5, 2024 12:32 PM

I try to eat vegetables and I do eat fruit every day, but it's never the recommended amount per day, I don't think anyone does.

by Anonymousreply 22June 5, 2024 5:00 PM

Hold me David, in your greasy MSG encrusted arms

by Anonymousreply 23June 5, 2024 5:14 PM

I rarely eat veggies, I take them in powdered form

by Anonymousreply 24June 5, 2024 5:24 PM

R22- I do.

I probably eat about 32 different plant foods per week including fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes and some different grains.

by Anonymousreply 25June 5, 2024 5:47 PM

So are energy drinks bad???

by Anonymousreply 26June 15, 2024 6:00 AM

There's nothing wrong with MSG, even the Cuntastic euros allow it

by Anonymousreply 27June 17, 2024 6:32 PM

It isn't solely junk foods. Meat consumption increases the risk of colon cancer, including smoked, charred and cured meats. Alcohol does as well. Those charcuterie trays are not your friend, Gen Zrs.

by Anonymousreply 28June 17, 2024 7:31 PM

Yes, r28. Deli meat is especially bad as is meat cooked over charcoal. I got breast cancer and was told both of those they KNOW are linked to cancer.

Been cancer free for 3 years now but made some radical lifestyle changes. I now exercise 5-6 days per week for an hour at a time. I figure it's just an hour out of my day so it's not a big deal. I also eat less now and make my own meals. I don't drink but never really have. I maybe have a glass of wine 3 times a year.

Bonus to all this is that I've lost over 100 pounds and am healthier than I ever have been.

by Anonymousreply 29June 17, 2024 8:06 PM

Good for you, R29. Quite an accomplishment. Stay well.

by Anonymousreply 30June 17, 2024 8:50 PM

Eat shit and die!

by Anonymousreply 31July 7, 2024 2:58 PM

What malarky.....Another Healrh Scare. Its always something, then ten yrs later they reverse it. I am not falling for the bs any longer.

by Anonymousreply 32July 7, 2024 3:55 PM

Genetics have plenty to do with it, too

Actually this is an excuse I hear all the time from fat people, having a family who encourages overeating and everyone follows suit is not genetics, stop this misinformation, people simply eat too much and then blame everything else. A big fat fried has insulin resistance, he thinks it's genetic and doesn't do anything to help himself because he has a medical condition, he's always been fat, that's the reason for insulin resistance, stupidity.

by Anonymousreply 33July 7, 2024 4:20 PM

Obesity is a killer.

by Anonymousreply 34July 7, 2024 5:16 PM

Cancer….it’s all your fault!

by Anonymousreply 35July 8, 2024 1:47 PM

It’s incredibly hard to cut processed food entirely out of your diet. Even bread is considered processed food. So is cheese.

I cook every day, mostly because I can’t afford to order in or to go out for dinner on a regular basis — but also because when I cook, I KNOW what goes into the food. Very little fat, almost no salt…
