Any advance word on this ? BROS /upcoming American romantic comedy film directed by Nicholas Stoller

Bros is an upcoming American romantic comedy film directed by Nicholas Stoller from a screenplay he wrote with Billy Eichner. Stoller and Judd Apatow are producers on the film.[2] The film stars Eichner, Luke Macfarlane, Ts Madison, Monica Raymund, Guillermo Díaz, Guy Branum, and Amanda Bearse. The film is the first gay romantic comedy from a major studio featuring an almost entirely LGBTQ principal cast,[3][10] with the exception of Debra Messing and Kristin Chenoweth, whom Stoller calls "allies" of the community.[3]

if there was ever a film to turn the majority of gay men into homophobes

this might be it

by Anonymousreply 1August 27, 2022 11:45 PM

I heard it was funny.

by Anonymousreply 2August 27, 2022 11:54 PM

too bad Monkey Pox will be at pandemic levels when its released

by Anonymousreply 3August 28, 2022 1:18 AM

I'll watch it for the beefcake, not because I want to see Billy Eichner lead a film. It looks like something that could range anywhere from good disposable fun to try-hard annoying - or somewhere in between. I'll give it a shot.

Here's the trailer

It has its premiere at TIFF22 on Sept 9th. The press showing is on Sept 10th, so we could know if it's any good around that time.

Awwwwww, they’re ugly!

:(

by Anonymousreply 6August 29, 2022 7:17 PM

Piss off, haters.

Whether or not you love Billy and think he's funny as hell (I do), Luke McFarlane is a DL fave, now and forever. Total dollface.

Couldn’t they have hired models with decent asses for the cover photo?

by Anonymousreply 8August 29, 2022 7:28 PM

And he's a nice guy!

I liked Billy in Difficult People, which is the only thing I've seen him in.

by Anonymousreply 10August 29, 2022 7:29 PM

The sweater over a tshirt look is so dated.

by Anonymousreply 11August 29, 2022 7:31 PM

The dialogue seems sophomoric and cringy and it appears to be filled with cliches ripped from the pages of DataLounge. But, Luke McFarlane is gorgeous, so there’s that.

by Anonymousreply 12August 29, 2022 7:32 PM

Are we supposed to believe that Billy Eichner is attractive?

by Anonymousreply 13August 29, 2022 7:34 PM

Hollywood really thinks they’re convincing us, r13.

by Anonymousreply 14August 29, 2022 7:37 PM

Oh, I'd hit that, R13.

I reject on the premise that these 2 are any sort of match. Perhaps if Eichner were genuinely quirky or endearing, but not as is.

by Anonymousreply 16August 29, 2022 7:38 PM

Billy has been promoting this for months. And by "promoting," I mean screaming about it from the rooftops. It still doesn't come out until 9/30. He'll die of hysteria by then.

by Anonymousreply 17August 29, 2022 8:01 PM

Billy Eichner is never, ever going to be a thing. He peaked with Difficult People.

by Anonymousreply 18August 29, 2022 8:07 PM

Difficult as in to look at?

by Anonymousreply 19August 29, 2022 8:08 PM

I’ve always wanted Luke to be in a mainstream movie.

This wasn’t what I had in mind.

by Anonymousreply 20August 29, 2022 8:14 PM

[quote]The sweater over a tshirt look is so dated.

Yeah no…people do that because it helps keep the armpit sweat under control. Nothing to do with fashion.

by Anonymousreply 21August 29, 2022 8:16 PM

I find Eichner hot up until he speaks.

by Anonymousreply 22August 29, 2022 8:27 PM

Here's Billy on the MTV VMAs promoting "Bros" and knocking the Supreme Court because the court wouldn't like Bros. Bros is, in part, a social justice issue and not just a movie.

A collared shirt looks better under a sweater

by Anonymousreply 25August 29, 2022 8:45 PM

Love Luke McFarlane. He was good in Killjoys - he deserves a big sci fi franchise payout.

Since Marvel is looking for gay superheroes, they should be looking at Luke. Handsome, built, and seemingly a good guy. What's not to love.

by Anonymousreply 26August 29, 2022 9:08 PM

OMG!! I just got a ticket to Bros at TIFF!!! I can't wait. What should I wear? A caftan? A muscle shirt? Or a "I Love Billy" T-shirt?

Billy is obnoxious, and mean, and McFarland is said to be a bit of an asshole.

by Anonymousreply 34September 9, 2022 6:28 PM

I was on board with this movie, and I'm sure I'll still probably see it but Billy's comments about streaming movies being "disposable" as a shady aside to "Fire Island" rubbed me the wrong way. That being said, he's always been on my hate fuck list, so way to go, Billy boy, you're still on it.

But of course R31; it wouldn’t do to be seen in public weeping over the One That Got Away.

by Anonymousreply 38September 9, 2022 6:47 PM

I'm glad that Booster and Eichner dealt with this non-event with some humor and grace, and that they remain friends.

OTOH, Eichner wasn't wrong about the disposability of made-for-streaming product. Here today, forgotten tomorrow at lunchtime. I mostly enjoyed Booster's FIRE ISLAND but after an initial flurry of attention (at least on social media), it didn't make much of a ripple this summer. A small handful of friends watched it and liked it. Mostly forgotten already.

Let's check back on BROS, say, by the end of October and see if we're saying the same about it.

by Anonymousreply 39September 9, 2022 8:41 PM

Doesn't it seem like just another Hallmark movie?

by Anonymousreply 40September 9, 2022 8:47 PM

[quote]McFarland is said to be a bit of an asshole.

Who has said that?

He's reputed to be a nice guy and well-liked as far as everything I've ever heard about him. I find that difficult to believe and disappointing if true because, of course, I'd turn on him faster than a bottom could get his ankles into the air.

by Anonymousreply 41September 9, 2022 8:50 PM

R31 made me laugh audibly.

by Anonymousreply 43September 9, 2022 9:13 PM

by Anonymousreply 44September 9, 2022 9:24 PM

And with Judd Apatow's sensibility in charge? No thanks.

by Anonymousreply 45September 9, 2022 9:27 PM

Fire island was abysmal, not unlike Billy on the Street. How were there 50+ episodes of that dreck? He gave Morton Downey Jr. a run for his money.

Julie Klausner congratulated him on Bros on Twitter and asked him to check his text messages. Clearly he dropped her as a friend as soon as he got a taste of fame. It’s kind of funny how quickly he became the exact kind of Hollywood asshole he lampooned on Difficult People.

by Anonymousreply 46September 9, 2022 9:35 PM

There’s a free screening on Monday, so I’m going to go see it with a theater of gays. The script still seems like someone’s junior year creative writing project, but there’s always Luke McFarlane.

by Anonymousreply 47September 9, 2022 10:08 PM

by Anonymousreply 48September 9, 2022 10:35 PM

by Anonymousreply 49September 9, 2022 10:37 PM

No, Hallmark frau, he came out as gay years ago.

by Anonymousreply 50September 9, 2022 10:40 PM

by Anonymousreply 51September 10, 2022 2:54 AM

Billy Eichner, are you creating Twitter hyperbole again?

by Anonymousreply 53September 10, 2022 5:54 AM

There are MULTIPLE reviews PRAISING Bros. It's a hit!! Billy is a star!!!

by Anonymousreply 54September 10, 2022 5:56 AM

After he got assfucked by a tranny in The Hangover II, I guess Ed Helms wasn't available for Bros. So they decided to give Eichener a chance. I might watch it but man oh man does this look like Gay Cultural Appropriation. Like, "see straights?! We're just like you! We like being alone! We cook meals for one! We're scared to fall in love!"

by Anonymousreply 55September 10, 2022 6:30 AM

This looks like it would be a fun movie if both leads were hot. Unfortunately only Luke is.

by Anonymousreply 56September 10, 2022 6:46 AM

I do love the nonexistent flat asses on the movie poster. I wonder if they belong to the film's stars.

by Anonymousreply 57September 10, 2022 12:34 PM

I don't recall Luke's ass being noticeably flat on Killjoys, and he's beefed up considerably since then.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 60September 10, 2022 2:46 PM

RogerEbert.com gives it 2 1/2 stars out of four.

One of the problems the reviewer sees with the movie is that it is centered around white cis males.

[quote] And it really is great to see a mainstream Hollywood film of this magnitude with this kind of representation from throughout the LGBTQ community. However, it defeats its own message of bringing queer history and queer life out of the margins when it centers the love story between two cis, conventionally attractive white gay men. Eichner is the first to point out his privilege; early on his character wins an award at an LGBTQ gala for Best Cis White Gay Man of the Year.

[quote] But being self-aware isn’t as impactful as de-centering the cis white gay man as the lead, especially when every other queer character in the film still remains on the margins of the story.

The reviewer has other issues with the movie , detailed in the linked review.

Comedy is hard.

by Anonymousreply 62September 10, 2022 3:33 PM

That Ebert review is everything that’s wrong with film criticism and journalism and I don’t see that changing any time soon.

Everything HAS to be all things to ALL people or else it’s not worthwhile. Even if they get the tone right, they’ve committed a sin by not centering trans women of color, because there have already been SO many white gay happy romances on film already of course! Fucking cunts.

by Anonymousreply 63September 10, 2022 3:40 PM

Also, “queerness”, fucking “queerness”. Fuck off.

by Anonymousreply 64September 10, 2022 3:41 PM

Agreed. The freakin' non-binary-"queer"-tranny-lovin' Ebert reviewer needs to make his own bomb.

by Anonymousreply 65September 10, 2022 3:45 PM

It's just a rom-com with gay leads. Personally I hate that genre so I'm not even watching it. I'd much rather watch a few minutes of Billy on the Street. But basic people love cheesy movies, so it will likely be profitable. I also would never support a Judd Apatow project. His tired brand of comedy and his nepotistic ways make my skin crawl.

by Anonymousreply 66September 10, 2022 3:46 PM

All of the mixed reviews are being interrupted as "fresh" on Rottontomatoes.com, so this is not hurting Billy's movie. I bet even the 2 1/2 star out of 4 star RogerEbert.com gets listed as fresh. That's a standard practice at RT, it's either fresh or rotten, with no in-between. Metacritic.com adjusts its ratings for the degree of negativity or positivity of the review, unlike RT.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 67September 10, 2022 3:48 PM

Correction: The RogertEbert.com review is counted as rotten, with 2 1/2 stars out of 4. At this time, it's the first rotten review for the movie.

"Julie Klausner congratulated him on Bros on Twitter and asked him to check his text messages. Clearly he dropped her as a friend as soon as he got a taste of fame. It’s kind of funny how quickly he became the exact kind of Hollywood asshole he lampooned on Difficult People. "

Difficult People is the best thing he's ever done. That said, I wouldn't always assume that cast mates are tight friends.

by Anonymousreply 69September 10, 2022 4:55 PM

It's bigger crime to be bad than to be centered on the c-slur, white males.

by Anonymousreply 70September 10, 2022 7:21 PM

Yep. People really are going to bitch about everything, aren't they?

[quote]With the conversation winding down and everyone ready to head to the after-party, there was time for one final question. It came from a female voice, high in the rafters: Why, despite all this talk of representation, did the film star two white men? (Eichner’s love interest is played by Hallmark hunk Luke Macfarlane.) Having perhaps apologized enough already, Eichner didn’t feel the need to do so again, and it was left to Madison to fill the space. A movie like this was a way of getting her foot in the door, she said, and if there was a sequel to Bros, well, maybe it would star her.

[quote]Then she stood up, shook her ass, and order was restored.

Naturally, the only comments so far are from someone bitching that it's not a good enough answer.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 71September 11, 2022 1:30 PM

[quote]Why, despite all this talk of representation, did the film star two white men?

Because the star was a white guy, as it was his movie, and the reality is that the vast majority of people date within their own race, so it would actually be race baiting and disingenuous for them to have a non-white love interest purely for credibility since it would be using a person of color cynically?

by Anonymousreply 72September 11, 2022 1:39 PM

Gays are still desperate for an out, bankable, relatable, attractive gay Hollywood mainstream star. Lacking any real representation we have to suffer through people like Eichner (tiny niche at best) and Joel Kim Booster (even tinier.) Sigh.

by Anonymousreply 73September 11, 2022 1:48 PM

They were friends for years R69. They created, wrote, and ran Difficult People together because they couldn’t find anyone to hire them or write for them. They were very close.

It's too bad someone like Richard Armitage hasn't done a gay role - someone who can actually act.

Armitage is not a leading man. He’a a minor league character actor. I’m talking about a mainstream actor at the height of their powers who would be up for something like 007, a role that Armitage would never seriously be considered for.

by Anonymousreply 80September 12, 2022 1:16 PM

[quote] a role that Armitage would never seriously be considered for.

Back when fancasting for Bond was occurring, The Hobbit had just been released in 2012. He was definitely on many people's lists, not just Tolkien fanboys.

by Anonymousreply 81September 12, 2022 2:27 PM

^^^Oh, he's also fantastic as one of the leads in MI-5, Berlin Station, and The Stranger.

by Anonymousreply 82September 12, 2022 2:29 PM

Because of the times we live in, good movies are few and far in between. My spouse and I will probably go see it. I don’t expect it to make me laugh at loud, but I think that the scene where the bisexual and lesbian are complaining is cute.

by Anonymousreply 83September 12, 2022 3:18 PM

I saw it tonight and I expected to hate it. But, it’s a cute gay rom-com bit of fluff. I laughed a lot more than I thought that I would. Luke McFarlane did a great job in making people believe that someone who looks like him could be attracted to someone who looks like Billy E. It’s a tall order, but he was up to the challenge. Yeah, there were the requisite “woke” moments and references. But, overall it didn’t suck.

by Anonymousreply 84September 13, 2022 4:55 AM

Does it end in an open relationship?

by Anonymousreply 85September 13, 2022 8:06 AM

This is Datalounge. We've hated it since Billy Eichner first thought of it before he even wrote a word down.

by Anonymousreply 86September 13, 2022 10:00 AM

There are how many mediocre straight romcoms? Gay people also need mediocre romcoms. Gay folk ripping everything that gets made to shreds and having impossible standards is one reason why we end up with the same movies about gay guys not being allowed to love each other and dying in the end.

by Anonymousreply 87September 13, 2022 10:12 AM

It’s trash. Don’t waste your money on a project in which producers are scolding people for calling it a gay film. It’s a “QUEER film” you little faggots. Don’t mistake it for a gay film or else the producers don’t want you watching their film.

by Anonymousreply 88September 13, 2022 10:49 AM

Reporters generally don’t create headlines.

by Anonymousreply 92September 13, 2022 2:14 PM

R87 Well said. This would be less of an issue if there were more films about gays, period. We can have light, mainstream entertainment about us, too; not everything has to be artsy or literary or tragic to be true. And yeah, this film doesn't represent all of us but at least it's not straightwashing or gayploitation, or worse. More films in a variety of genres written by gays about gays is a good thing.

by Anonymousreply 93September 13, 2022 9:46 PM

We don’t need more movies or TV shows that feature a podcaster main character.

by Anonymousreply 94September 14, 2022 2:34 AM

[quote] And yeah, this film doesn't represent all of us but

It definitely doesn’t represent you R93. As stated by the own filmmakers this is not a film about gay men.

by Anonymousreply 95September 14, 2022 3:06 AM

You bitches can keep up the Billy Eichner hate, but I’m going to see it. I feel like a proud parent to see Billy as a lead in his own Hollywood film. It seems like yesterday we were watching him harassing people in the streets waving dollar bills. Good for him!

by Anonymousreply 96September 14, 2022 11:36 AM

[quote]Gay folk ripping everything that gets made to shreds and having impossible standards is one reason why we end up with the same movies about gay guys not being allowed to love each other and dying in the end.

It’s not the regular, boring gays and lesbians who are ripping this movie to shreds…

by Anonymousreply 97September 14, 2022 12:00 PM

I saw this tonight and it was an emotional experience. I cried. The usher at the cinema who was a trans woman of color helped me out of my seat because I was so emotional. We hugged each other and said to each other "We are seen".

We made a pact with each other to see the sequel together. I hope it's a big box office smash and that the sequel can deal with trans women of color falling in love and living their truth.

by Anonymousreply 98September 16, 2022 5:06 AM
