Bros is an upcoming American romantic comedy film directed by Nicholas Stoller from a screenplay he wrote with Billy Eichner. Stoller and Judd Apatow are producers on the film.[2] The film stars Eichner, Luke Macfarlane, Ts Madison, Monica Raymund, Guillermo Díaz, Guy Branum, and Amanda Bearse. The film is the first gay romantic comedy from a major studio featuring an almost entirely LGBTQ principal cast,[3][10] with the exception of Debra Messing and Kristin Chenoweth, whom Stoller calls "allies" of the community.[3]

I'll watch it for the beefcake, not because I want to see Billy Eichner lead a film. It looks like something that could range anywhere from good disposable fun to try-hard annoying - or somewhere in between. I'll give it a shot.
Here's the trailer
by Anonymous | reply 4 | August 29, 2022 7:08 PM |
It has its premiere at TIFF22 on Sept 9th. The press showing is on Sept 10th, so we could know if it's any good around that time.

The dialogue seems sophomoric and cringy and it appears to be filled with cliches ripped from the pages of DataLounge. But, Luke McFarlane is gorgeous, so there’s that.

I reject on the premise that these 2 are any sort of match. Perhaps if Eichner were genuinely quirky or endearing, but not as is.

Billy has been promoting this for months. And by "promoting," I mean screaming about it from the rooftops. It still doesn't come out until 9/30. He'll die of hysteria by then.

Since Marvel is looking for gay superheroes, they should be looking at Luke. Handsome, built, and seemingly a good guy. What's not to love.

I was on board with this movie, and I'm sure I'll still probably see it but Billy's comments about streaming movies being "disposable" as a shady aside to "Fire Island" rubbed me the wrong way. That being said, he's always been on my hate fuck list, so way to go, Billy boy, you're still on it.

I'm glad that Booster and Eichner dealt with this non-event with some humor and grace, and that they remain friends.
OTOH, Eichner wasn't wrong about the disposability of made-for-streaming product. Here today, forgotten tomorrow at lunchtime. I mostly enjoyed Booster's FIRE ISLAND but after an initial flurry of attention (at least on social media), it didn't make much of a ripple this summer. A small handful of friends watched it and liked it. Mostly forgotten already.
Let's check back on BROS, say, by the end of October and see if we're saying the same about it.

Fire island was abysmal, not unlike Billy on the Street. How were there 50+ episodes of that dreck? He gave Morton Downey Jr. a run for his money.
Julie Klausner congratulated him on Bros on Twitter and asked him to check his text messages. Clearly he dropped her as a friend as soon as he got a taste of fame. It’s kind of funny how quickly he became the exact kind of Hollywood asshole he lampooned on Difficult People.

After he got assfucked by a tranny in The Hangover II, I guess Ed Helms wasn't available for Bros. So they decided to give Eichener a chance. by Anonymous | reply 59 | September 10, 2022 2:00 PM |
RogerEbert.com gives it 2 1/2 stars out of four.
One of the problems the reviewer sees with the movie is that it is centered around white cis males.
[quote] And it really is great to see a mainstream Hollywood film of this magnitude with this kind of representation from throughout the LGBTQ community. However, it defeats its own message of bringing queer history and queer life out of the margins when it centers the love story between two cis, conventionally attractive white gay men. Eichner is the first to point out his privilege; early on his character wins an award at an LGBTQ gala for Best Cis White Gay Man of the Year.
[quote] But being self-aware isn’t as impactful as de-centering the cis white gay man as the lead, especially when every other queer character in the film still remains on the margins of the story.
The reviewer has other issues with the movie , detailed in the linked review.
Comedy is hard.

That Ebert review is everything that’s wrong with film criticism and journalism and I don’t see that changing any time soon.
Everything HAS to be all things to ALL people or else it’s not worthwhile. Even if they get the tone right, they’ve committed a sin by not centering trans women of color, because there have already been SO many white gay happy romances on film already of course! Fucking cunts.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | September 10, 2022 3:40 PM |
Also, “queerness”, fucking “queerness”. Fuck off.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | September 10, 2022 3:41 PM |
Agreed. The freakin' non-binary-"queer"-tranny-lovin' Ebert reviewer needs to make his own bomb.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | September 10, 2022 3:45 PM |
It's just a rom-com with gay leads. Personally I hate that genre so I'm not even watching it. I'd much rather watch a few minutes of Billy on the Street. But basic people love cheesy movies, so it will likely be profitable. I also would never support a Judd Apatow project. His tired brand of comedy and his nepotistic ways make my skin crawl.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | September 10, 2022 3:46 PM |
All of the mixed reviews are being interrupted as "fresh" on Rottontomatoes.com, so this is not hurting Billy's movie. I bet even the 2 1/2 star out of 4 star RogerEbert.com gets listed as fresh. That's a standard practice at RT, it's either fresh or rotten, with no in-between. Metacritic.com adjusts its ratings for the degree of negativity or positivity of the review, unlike RT.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | September 10, 2022 3:48 PM |
Correction: The RogertEbert.com review is counted as rotten, with 2 1/2 stars out of 4. At this time, it's the first rotten review for the movie.

Difficult People is the best thing he's ever done. That said, I wouldn't always assume that cast mates are tight friends.

by Anonymous | reply 70 | September 10, 2022 7:21 PM |
Yep. People really are going to bitch about everything, aren't they?
[quote]With the conversation winding down and everyone ready to head to the after-party, there was time for one final question. It came from a female voice, high in the rafters: Why, despite all this talk of representation, did the film star two white men? (Eichner’s love interest is played by Hallmark hunk Luke Macfarlane.) Having perhaps apologized enough already, Eichner didn’t feel the need to do so again, and it was left to Madison to fill the space. A movie like this was a way of getting her foot in the door, she said, and if there was a sequel to Bros, well, maybe it would star her.
[quote]Then she stood up, shook her ass, and order was restored.
Naturally, the only comments so far are from someone bitching that it's not a good enough answer.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | September 11, 2022 1:30 PM |
[quote]Why, despite all this talk of representation, did the film star two white men?
Because the star was a white guy, as it was his movie, and the reality is that the vast majority of people date within their own race, so it would actually be race baiting and disingenuous for them to have a non-white love interest purely for credibility since it would be using a person of color cynically?

I saw it tonight and I expected to hate it. But, it’s a cute gay rom-com bit of fluff. I laughed a lot more than I thought that I would. Luke McFarlane did a great job in making people believe that someone who looks like him could be attracted to someone who looks like Billy E. It’s a tall order, but he was up to the challenge. Yeah, there were the requisite “woke” moments and references. But, overall it didn’t suck.

There are how many mediocre straight romcoms? Gay people also need mediocre romcoms. Gay folk ripping everything that gets made to shreds and having impossible standards is one reason why we end up with the same movies about gay guys not being allowed to love each other and dying in the end.

It’s trash. Don’t waste your money on a project in which producers are scolding people for calling it a gay film. It’s a “QUEER film” you little faggots. Don’t mistake it for a gay film or else the producers don’t want you watching their film.

We can have light, mainstream entertainment about us, too; not everything has to be artsy or literary or tragic to be true. And yeah, this film doesn't represent all of us but at least it's not straightwashing or gayploitation, or worse. More films in a variety of genres written by gays about gays is a good thing.
