Elizabeth Warren - does she stick in your craw?
I know, I know, she's on the side of the people. Don't destroy your friends. And I'm glad she's a senator. I like her politics!
I cannot abide her personality when she shows up on news shows and talk shows. It's gotten worse. Her unctuous treacly earnest populist schtick STICKS IN MY CRAW!! Do you want to drink a beer with her? Shudder! When Elizabeth talks about good work and good policy, her corniness seems put on and politics seems a shell game with her.

Yes. She's a complete phony, and no one wants to see it.
For all her "Middle Class" bullshit, she still spent decades at Harvard, teaching the spawn of the 1%. Did she decamp to a scrappy public university, where Real People go to college? No. She stayed at the elite's elite university, and cashed every goddamn paycheck those rich clowns paid her.
She also lives in a multimillion-dollar manse in a tony neighborhood, and proudly drove a BMW before she got into politics and traded it for a hybrid (American-made, naturally).
She built a career as a conservative legal and economics scholar, and sold a great many books with that mindset. But she suddenly had a complete soul conversion during the Great Recession and magically turned into this big liberal? Or was it more a case of a huckster chasing a new audience and cashing in on them?

[quote] The GOP was very different then. If you want an example, just imagine a Republican president created the EPA and backed clean air, clean water, lowering emissions, etc. Because it's true. That president was Richard Nixon.
It wasn’t the party that was different, it was the times and people’s understanding of what effects government regulations could have. In the late 60s and early 70s, there was consensus that America had a severe pollution problem and there was a willingness to do things to clean things up and to stop future pollution. It was in the mid 70s and later that side effects of government regulations starting popping up that caused a backlash against government overreach and bureaucratic excesses. Remember the snail darter controversy? People were for saving endangered species when it was understood that it would be for broad categories, like “the whales”. People didn’t know the government would use the law to stop major projects like a dam to save some minor species of fish like the snail darter.
After a lot of these situations occurred with various regulations, the backlash against regulation excesses was picked up by the GOP (think Reagan and his 1976 run) and the Democrats sided with government control, and it continues to this day.

Her facelift is creepy. Her eyebrows are now in the middle of her forehead. Warren's such a phony. She was a Republican while she lived in Oklahoma and Texas. She was even a Republican when she lived in Austin at the same time Ann Richards was Gov, Barbara Jordan and Molly Ivins were in their prime. When she lived in Austin, her son would have gone to Austin High, a great public school but one whose catchment area cuts right across Austin to include both rich West Austin (where she lived) and poor, black and Latino East Austin. She sent her kid to a private school. Dubya's daughters went to Austin High. I figure she didn't want her brat mingling with those "people of color".

r20 I'd argue that more people are closer to the center in actuality but project hard left or hard right among their sociopolitical cliques based on which side of it they lean... circlejerks can seem aggressivel y intense and hyper focused but post climax, we tend to have a better view of what they believe.
not unlike many politicians with records that widely differ from their campaigning lip service.
but I'd have to add a caveat, that younger people do tend to be more single issue voters and therefore prone to greater extremes.

r30 It wasn't that bad in the beginning. It took until the second campaign cycle for me to get permanently banned there. I would say the majority were just misguided people that felt the mainstream left had gone too far left and faced public repercussions, sometimes violence and harassment, for mild offenses deemed un-pc.
It's not unlike some of the dissidents that find their way here because they are isolated or face similar threats from mainstream media and social media as well.
I'd say roughly about a quarter, maybe even around thirty, thirty five percent were largely there because of the purges on reddit, twitter, youtube, even the chans (the chans became both more far right and far left depending on sub than the once irreverent and universal trolls they had been, the same politics filtered onto the other chans which were initially created to get away from the extremism, go figure, but that was also connected to the tumblr purge and most are not registered voters)...
conspiracy forums and hate groups, of course, got even worse during that period, though. GLP remained largely far right with a scattering of far left but looking at them now, they've seem to lost many of their users and now, they don't seem all that outlandish compared to mainstream. Pity, their brand of batshit lunacy used to provide hours of entertainment.

A lot of people whose primary issue is economic equality/fairness have shuffled between the parties between 1970 and present, because of the debates over what is causing the hollowing out of the middle class. The division between Dem and GOP used to be based more on federal vs state control, not social issues. A lot of people like Warren who blame tax policy and corruption for economic outcomes have moved from GOP to Dem, while a lot of people like Trump who fell into populism and blamed immigration policy and free trade moved from Dem to GOP. Warren got her first big job as a law professor at University of Texas Austin through her husband who was a very well-known law professor. It helped that she claimed to be Cherokee. She's a grad of U Houston and Rutgers Law and UT Austin is too rich and too snobbish to hire a professor who went to such plebeian schools.
A couple of things really revolted by about her during her run for President. When some black women protestors showed up at one of her rallies, she hid behind Ayanna Presley instead of speaking directly to them. She obviously was unused to interacting with the Colored People. Warren also bragged about how she modestly worked as a Special Ed teacher, waxing poetic about herself devoted as she was to the Vulnerable. Then a young man with a learning disability asked her a question at a rally. It didn't make much sense. But instead of trying to interact with him and clarify what his issue was, she turned away from him, ignoring him and asking the audience if anybody else had a question for her. Such a phony.

Pete was working class?? He was born to university professors and cut his teeth at McKinsey consulting where he oversaw massive layoffs for his 1%er clients. He made his fortune laying other people off.
Christ, some of you really live on another planet.

The median load debt at Columbia for a Bachelor is 20k total for the 4 years. Many are going on full rides. And many have rich parents.
Shittier schools are producing the high debt loads.

heheh load debt. I mean loan debt. 20k. for an Ivy League Bachelor - Columbia. Yale is 13K. Total federal loan debt for an undergraduate BA BS.

Most Americans are unaware of this. They are thinking of Johnny Mediocre taking out 120K to graduate from some fake prestige college.

r98 Yes but Pete isn't working class because he "aspires to wealth" hahaha. Whereas Beto and Warren just woke up one day with 8-figure and 9-figure fortunes totally by accident. Then by another embarrassing coincidence, they meant to donate it all to charity but forgot to mail the check for the entirety of their lives. Now shut up and pay my student loans!

r104 Thankfully that figure is pre-inflation. Probably closer to a billion now, but still going to be a very tough life trying to get by on that.
