Tater tots, no, waffle fries, yes.

Running out to my local white trash eatery (Jake’s) to get my fill.

I shouldn't but yeah, love them. Same with hash browns.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | August 25, 2022 12:25 AM |
I love tater tots, especially with melted cheese, jalapenos, spicy ground beef or turkey and baked in the oven.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | August 25, 2022 12:26 AM |
Tater tots are to potatoes what hot dogs are to meat.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | August 25, 2022 12:27 AM |
Love 'em. Once I forgot and left them in the oven overnight after I shut it off. The next day they had transformed into the divine essence of crunch, having the texture of a potato chip but the shape of a tot.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | August 25, 2022 12:28 AM |
R11. I’m a fat whore but not that over-the-top!
by Anonymous | reply 14 | August 25, 2022 12:30 AM |
They elevate my blood sugar. I almost never eat them.
There are some foods so good that I'll risk a sugar spike, but tater tots is not one of them.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | August 25, 2022 12:31 AM |
I love them, but they are best grilled on a pan on a grill. Then they come out crunchy.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | August 25, 2022 12:32 AM |
Love them, but has to be good tots. No store brand tots, the insides have no flavor and the texture is not very potatoey.
Moving on, how do we make our Tater Tot Casserole? For my husband & I, two cans of mixed vegetables & 1 can of corn. I like TTC because you can mix up three types of canned vegetables, ther types of soup (we do cream of mushroom & cream of chicken), even the tots (we used those cheese-stuffed tots once, not bad). We mix up the meats depending on what's on sale. It's good with half ground beef/half ground Italian sausage.
Ketchup on top is recommended!
by Anonymous | reply 17 | August 25, 2022 12:34 AM |
I’d rather have latkes.

My boyfriend doesn't like cheese (I know, I know) so I made Jim Bob Duggar's tater tot casserole because it used evaporated milk instead. Love tater tot casseroles.

R18…I was referring to R19.
Are we sure they’re potatoes?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | August 25, 2022 1:12 AM |
Love them as an alternative to french fries if they crispy on the outside and potato-y on the inside. If they're crisp all the way through or soggy, they're sort of gross.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | August 25, 2022 1:18 AM |
The last bag of tater tots I bought—a huge bag of Ore-Ida brand—were extraordinarily salty. Something must have gone wrong in the processing faculty. Even my partner, who likes salty foods, couldn’t eat them so we threw the whole bag away.
But yes, apart from this, I love tater tots.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | August 25, 2022 1:29 AM |
You TYPE FAT OP. I hope those tater tots will console you on all those lonely nights! What self-respecting gay consumes carbs? Especially simple carbs? I am outraged that this behavior is even remotely acceptable on DL!!!

They are God's gift to us, helping us get through the day. My favorite thing to encounter is a tater tot bar: like a taco bar, but the base is tater tots. My husband is British and as such is borderline addicted to potatoes but when I introduced him to TT's he thought they were gross. Neither one of can figure that out.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | August 25, 2022 1:32 AM |
love them but they MUST be extremely crunchy. None of that sort on the outside bullshit.

by Anonymous | reply 51 | August 25, 2022 2:19 AM |
Hmm ... never even knew Wendy's had breakfast potatoes.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | August 25, 2022 2:22 AM |
Tots are not like hot dogs since they don't contain cubed bits of beak, hooves and internal organs
by Anonymous | reply 53 | August 25, 2022 2:23 AM |
They are always too salty as is most processed food .
And per above roasting small potatoes, red in jackets are best, in duck fat is better. And classier.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | August 25, 2022 2:26 AM |
r52, I got them one morning when we all stopped for breakfast after walking dogs at the rescue. I gave each chick in the car one to taste and it was like feral dogs after, trying to get more. We almost circled back to get more.

We're talking about Tater Tots, here. Yes, I think people know you can buy potatoes and fry them up in a pan with different oils or fats. Geez.

R52 yes, I was on my way to work and the drive-thru line was too long for McDonald's so I ended up going to Wendy's.

[quote]Some brands have distanced themselves from the stigma of TOTS by referring to them as ROUNDS and slightly altering the shape
I like those. They are thinner, so they get an overall crispiness to them when you bake them in the oven.
I bake them at 410 degrees until a few minutes after the preheat timer goes off and they are really crispy

Processed chef's food tip. If you dont have tater tots , thaw hash brown potatoes, squeeze into tatoer tots, fry in oil. Delish.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | August 25, 2022 3:45 AM |
OP, tater tots are my favorite vegetable! When I am trying to drop a few pounds for a role I eat nothing but these things.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | August 25, 2022 3:48 AM |
Potatoes are like manna from heaven. I love them so much. The only thing that can make a potato inedible is rancid oil used to fry them. That is a crime against all the gods and should be punishable by death.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | August 25, 2022 3:52 AM |
Duck fat fries or tots are absolutely to die for. I certainly wouldn't make them at home, but if you see them on a restaurant menu do try.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | August 25, 2022 3:59 AM |
Tater tots, skin-on mashed potatoes, baked potatoes, potato tacos and potato taquitos are all good ways to fill up without eating meat
by Anonymous | reply 67 | August 25, 2022 4:05 AM |
Some magazine or cooking show did a thing about how to make your own -- seems like an awful lot of trouble for something that probably wouldn't taste any better than the frozen ones.
I think Sonic has tots on the menu -- also some Mexican fast-food place in the northwest has them IIRC.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | August 25, 2022 5:24 AM |
Homemade are better, but I'll leave it to restaurants.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | August 25, 2022 5:58 AM |
I have never fried potatoes in duck fat. I said to roast them with duck fat.
And duck fat has a distinct flavor. Even with domesticated duck it is definitely gamey.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | August 25, 2022 10:06 AM |
I love potatoes in just about all forms, but most tator tots seem like nothing more than little sponges designed to absorb cooking grease. I usually feel a little gross after eating them.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | August 25, 2022 10:27 AM |
I don't eat them often but I like to dip them in Ranch
by Anonymous | reply 72 | August 25, 2022 3:07 PM |
I like them too but rarely eat them, I'l buy a bag of them once a year. Five or six minutes in the air fryer and they are perfection.

Tater tots were invented in 1953 when American frozen food company Ore-Ida founders F. Nephi Grigg, Golden Grigg, and Ross Erin Butler Sr. were trying to figure out what to do with leftover slivers of cut-up potatoes.

I wish there was a place that would make fresh tater tots in all different flavors. They should be able to come up with a machine that would chop up & shred the potatoes and another to mold the tater tots

I bought cheeseburger macaroni Hamburger Helper tonight, going to make it tomorrow. I haven't had it in years but it sounded good.

R158 No shame necessary. When I was single, I would occasionally buy the Velveeta Cheeseburger Skillet mix. I think it was called "Liquid Gold" or something like that. I have not seen it in ages, so it may well be discontinued. It had a really good pickle flavour. There was dehydrated pickle juice in the ingredient list for the seasoning sachet.
My dog enjoyed it as well! He would become really animated for an old dog, as it was simmering. I told myself it wasn't so bad once in a while, because I would buy the Organic Grass-Fed beef.
I hope yours turns out well!

"Tater tots" is short for "potato toddlers".

They are so neat, such a blessing.

I stopped eating the frozen store bought ones at home. It seems no matter how carefully I tried baking them in the oven or frying them on the skillet they always turned out mealy and bland in the center.
I love the poster’s story above about accidentally leaving them in the oven overnight after turning the heat off and they were incredibly crispy and perfect. I may try this next time I have 12 hours to make dinner. Seriously!
The reason they taste so good in restaurants and fast food joints is because they deep fry them? Well damn…

Tater tots with their eyes all aglow will find it hard to sleep tonight.

R158 again, the Hamburger Helper was pretty good but they give you less noodles now, next time I would cut down on the hamburger or add more noodles. I seasoned my meat so it gave it a bit more oomph.

You could pan-fry the Tater Tots in a little bit of oil and get them crisped up and brown. I pan-fry (just a Tbsp. of oil) falafel and it gets really crispy.
