I remember he was mocked here a lot and on other boards like SON. Don't remember the details because I never really followed him all that much. Seemed to take himself way too seriously for a genre way past its prime.

I am shocked and heartbroken to learn my pal Nelson Branco has passed away. I noticed his absence on Twitter, and an email last week to check in on him was never answered. I felt something was wrong.

He was many things to me. He was a fellow rabid fan of of the soap opera genre (he knew and was friends with many of the actors and writers and producers and fans of daytime TV.) We have spent hours analyzing The Young and the Restless together over the years; Nelson was wonderful to gossip with and share a smoke. He was also a gifted writer and editor, and we worked together many times over the years. He was a champion of my work, and my editor during my ride as columnist writing Spirit & The City (and other PostMedia pieces) and he called upon me to join Shinan Govani to tape video commentaries on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills most recently.

And I'll always fondly remember our trip to Toronto Islands that one summer (that's us heading there via water taxi in the pic below) where I introduced him to Snake Island, and where I followed his bad advice and ate too many weed gummies, passing out on the beach for three hours. When I came to he was waiting patiently for me by the water as dusk fell. My first words were, "Do I still have a column?" (I did.) Nelson spoke his mind even when what he had to say was abrasive, but was very sensitive, exceptionally bright and fast. He was a true Gemini - you were never sure what you'd get from him.

He always missed and mourned his lover who died of AIDS a long time ago; he spoke many times of him to me with great sadness still living in his heart. I believe there has been a sweet and beautiful reunion that has taken place, but meanwhile, here on Earth, life isn't going to be the same without you Nellie.

I love you and miss you already. Damnit.

Anyway, at that point, he took his "Suds Report" and started his own subscription newsletter, calling it "Soap Opera Uncensored." That was around 2011. As I recall, he did that for about three years. And while these e-books were entertaining with some really good interviews, the soap genre during that time was in free fall. We'd already lost ATWT and GL, with AMC and OLTL soon followed. With the loss of four show, content was becoming scarce. Look how thin SOD is now. And how much he actually made from that endeavor might also be questionable. When he opted to take a production job in television, he just didn't have time to cover soaps like he had.

Also according to his LinkedIn, his first full time job after college was as a "News Director" with Soap Opera Update. He did that for almost 6 years, from 1997 to 2003.

I was a OLTL and Y&R watcher until around 2012-2013 for both and have not followed anything related since. (I don't recall this)

R17 It was so long ago, but I'm now rethinking things and believe Branco's exit - he denied he was fired - had more to do with comments he'd made about Kristian Alfonso on Days - calling her "anorexic" and blaming her for his pal, Crystal Chappell, being fired. Fraus were outraged and calling for his head. But prior to that, he'd also ruffled feathers about his coverage of MTS's big contract dispute with Sony making her sound like a greedy B who was out of touch with reality. And around that same time, the very loud and local "Lane" fans on Y&R were also mad at him for his coverage of Daniel Goddard being let go at Y&R (the first time). Even when Goddard was eventually fired for good in 2020 and was receiving far less sympathy among viewers that time 'round , Branco tweeted something to the effect "that ain't the half of it."

People who knew him that are commenting about his death on Twitter are acknowledging that he wasn’t the most easy going man. He had a sharp tongue.
