Thank you for the new thread, OP.

Coric saved 3 BPs in the 2nd set opening game, nicely done!

damm they's some WET shorts on Porna
by Anonymous | reply 3 | August 21, 2022 11:03 PM |
I need to find some barefoot photos of Coric, he has really sexy feet!
by Anonymous | reply 4 | August 21, 2022 11:07 PM |
It seems like R4 not only wants some Coric feet but also some Chore-itzo.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | August 21, 2022 11:16 PM |
thanks OP
yes Coric is really good looking with an unusually good body for a tennis player. He'd be even hotter though if he got rid of the facial hair (I know he let it grow this week due to superstition) and instead grew out the hair on his head. I'm beyond tired of the shaved head look. He does have the same odd hair pattern as Djokovic. I also don't like his tattoos (like Berrettini he has expanded the one on his arm too)

Chore-itch breaks on Tsitsy's double fault. 4-2.

Coric unless he chokes has got this

oooh, Coric making ball boy wipe the court at break point, and then Titsy double faults.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | August 21, 2022 11:24 PM |
very unusual that both players today are seeking their first outdoor hardcourt title. Tsitsipas has only won on clay and indoor hard
Coric has only won on clay and grass.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | August 21, 2022 11:25 PM |
correction Tsitsipas won a grass event this year

Ominous clouds nearby. The organizers were wise to start the men's final immediately after the women's ceremony.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | August 21, 2022 11:42 PM |
LOVING the chaos of last 2 ATP tournaments. No one expected PCB and Coric to come out on top. Let's hope this men's chaos continues at the USO. Hopefully we get a new male slam champ
by Anonymous | reply 20 | August 21, 2022 11:43 PM |
Coric is "rough" or trashy hot. Thick with a nice ass. But who the hell is the one dude is in his box? Actually two of the dudes are good looking, but one is super hot and gorgeous.

I was going to make the exact same observation. He might be in he USO mix but one never knows how success in best of three will translate for someone with such a thin recent record.

I am just flabbergasted that Coric won this thing. I mean, the feeling was that his injury was career-threatening. Just unbelievable!
The men's game is so open at the moment, right? And this is sort of a prep for the true, post-big-3 era, though Nadal isn't done yet and Novak I suspect will play for many more years. But his ranking has dropped of course, so he'll get tougher draws, face tougher players earlier on. Just fascinating.

My gay eyes wouldn't mind having ten years of Borna/Matteo/Carlos ménage à trois in the big three ahead of them, just like we have ten plus years of Federer/Nadal/Djokovic in the rearview mirror but with some eye candy special fx added on top of the sheer rivalry. Yum!
Now Garcia was always considered a mental headcase with huge potential, just like so many other French players , à la Tsonga, Gasquet, Mladonna, but most particularly Amelie Mauresmo, so I wonder if Caroline Garcia could not have a late career resurgence, just like Amelie had in 2006, three years before she retired (Aus Open and Wimbledon titles). This could be compelling and I'm not even saying this in jest, Ben and Courtney.
Also could someone explain the joke about what is X Y or Z's skin color: I keep seeing this one in the threads and it's totally lost on me.

by Anonymous | reply 70 | August 22, 2022 6:32 PM |
given this week's rankings, here are the dangerous floaters at the USO. I have a feeling it's going to be pure chaos in both draws. There haven't been this many dangerous ATP floaters in a while
[bold] ATP: [/bold]
Kecmanovic he is next in line to be seeded if someone else withdraws
Karatsev hasn't had a good year compared to his breakout 2021 but with that power he can turn it on at any time
Davidovich Fokina has a habit of getting into long marathon matches and no seed wants that in the first 2 rounds
Brooksby
Ruusuvuori's form has improved the last several weeks and he's a solid groundstroker
Bublik aka Kyrgios-lite
Isner it's a nightmare prospect for any seed to think about the possibility of an all tiebreak set or even all tiebreak match so early on
Murray
Ivashka
Korda
Draper
Fognini
Goffin
Sonego
Nakashima
Kokkinakis
[bold] WTA [/bold] there are 6 former champs who will be unseeded! has to be a record
Kanepi is #33 and obviously the upset queen.
Zhang played well in Cincinnati and solid all around game
Cornet
Q. Zheng the 19 year old has stormed up the WTA rankings this year and hits huge groundstrokes
Bouzkova has more confidence after finally winning a title this year and is known for marathon matches
Osaka
Samsonova plays like Sharapova but less consistency. She can get hot at any time though
Tomljanovic
Andreescu
Kerber if she plays
Stephens
Kalinskaya
Giorgi
Serena

Still have to be vaccinated.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | August 22, 2022 8:07 PM |
I agree with R23. I can see the ATP becoming like the WTA with random winners all over the place. The top young guys can't seem to win week in and week out. Alcaraz is still trying to figure it out. Tsitsipas has a major weakness in his backhand. He's going to have to shore that up. Ruud doesn't really impress me and he just rolled over against Nadal in the French Open final. Auger-Aliassime is inconsistent. Sinner struggles with closing out matches. I can't see anyone dominating the tour. Ugh, might we be stuck with Medvedev as #1 for years.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | August 22, 2022 8:14 PM |
Novak has officially withdrawn from the Open.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | August 22, 2022 8:14 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 78 | August 22, 2022 8:15 PM |
Yeah, post-Big 3 era will be a free-for-all. I think it will be the first time in generations that there's not consistently dominant players and no player wins more than, say, 5 Slams (if that).
Not all eras had Big-3 level dominance - or anywhere close - but there was always the clear "upper tier" and it was a big deal when those players were upset. Just like post-Serena WTA, I don't think anyone will feel that way about the ATP players that manage to set themselves apart even a little bit. It's like how Halep and Muguruza are multiple Slam champs, but no one is the least bit surprised when they lose to a lower player before they round they're "supposed" to lose in. Granted, they're past their primes now. Osaka had just reached that stage where she was going to be a dominant player, and it was a BIG deal when she lost, but then she had all of her difficulties and that's all gone.
A lot of fans claim to love the parity, but I like a clear pecking order and having an upper tier of players, and even an "established" second tier beneath. Probably not to the extent of the Big 3 era where they nearly completely dominated for such along time, but just something like the Edberg-Becker-Wilander era or Agassi-Sampras era.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | August 22, 2022 8:40 PM |
people often forget the late 90s into the early 00s were quite chaotic on the men's tour. There several 1 slam wonders and even slamless #1 Marcelo Rios. Interestingly at the time some tennis fans claimed they enjoyed that more than the dominant handful of top WTA players.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | August 22, 2022 8:50 PM |
Uh, Novak hasn't withdrawn from the Open yet. In fact, the organizers are meeting this afternoon to discuss creating some sort of waiver system to allow unvaccinated foreign players into the tournament since us citizens don't have to be vaxxed to play. The only two players in the top 200 who aren't vaxxed are Novak and deplorable US citizen Tennys Sandgren.
Personally, I wish the Open would grow a pair and throw Tennys out, too, to make the whole thing off limits to all unvaxxed players. But the unfortunate truth is the vast majority of players seem to think Novak should be allowed to play.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | August 22, 2022 8:58 PM |

"people often forget the late 90s into the early 00s were quite chaotic on the men's tour. There several 1 slam wonders and even slamless #1 Marcelo Rios. Interestingly at the time some tennis fans claimed they enjoyed that more than the dominant handful of top WTA players."
Some fans did, others didn't. Plus, it really wasn't even that chaotic. The one-time winners weren't THAT much more numerous than other periods prior. There was still very clearly a top tier. 1997-2003 - Sampras wins six Slams, Agassi wins four, Kuerten wins three French Opens. Rafter and Hewitt win two Slams each and contend in a lot of others. Ivanesvic is a one-time winner, but I wouldn't call him a one-time "wonder" like, say Thomas Johnassen, as he was in three other finals and made other deep runs. And while Kafelnikov only won one in the years indicated, he was already a Slam champion, having won won in 1996. Flip side, Safin wins one during that period, but wins another in 2005. The six "one-Slam wonders" during that seven-year period (and I'm including Ivanesivic who I don't think should be included) wasn't THAT drastic. Admittedly it was a few more than normal - the previous seven years had four one-time champs. But it wasn't so unstructured and random and filled with one-time winners that it really deserves to be thought of as particularly chaotic. Maybe the "chaos" came from not knowing who would take the throne as Fed doesn't show up and win a Slam until the very end of that period in 2003.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | August 22, 2022 9:27 PM |
R84 in 2004 Gaudio won RG over Coria
Also a number of 1 time slam finalists:
Rusedski, Rios, Enqvist, Andre Medvedev, Norman, Clement, Nalbandian, Schuettler, Verkerk,
personally I'm ready for a bit of chaos in the men's game. I just wanted it to happen before the big 3 were gone. I was hoping we'd get new winners at RG and Wimbledon with Djokovic and Nadal in the draw but alas no. On the other hand I'm more than ready for the women's game to level off and have more of a hierarchy
both tours have been severely lacking balance but in opposite ways for about a decade
by Anonymous | reply 85 | August 22, 2022 9:37 PM |
I didn't include Gaudio in 2004 because whomever said late 90s to early 2000s. Plus, Fed established himself with three Slams in 2004 (after already winning one in 1993), so the any "chaos" was over and Guadio winning a one-off Slam didn't really change that.

I gorged on the absolute meltdown of the Federer's fanboys across the tennis forums, who disintegrated successively when Nadal got to 21 GS, then to 22, then Novak to 21, which ultimately left their forever GOAT on the fold-up seat for the third guy of the only statistic that really matters to most people. What do you call that in Federer's mother tongue? Oh yes, Schadenfreude. GIANT Schadenfreude.

R101, it's not just the meltdowns. It's the ever changing goal posts that crack me up.
Fed fans (and the media) forever used the number of grand slams as the be all/end all for GOAT status. So, Pete was the best. Hands down. Not Borg or Laver. Pete. He had the slam lead.
Fed fans leaned into this because they knew Fed would pass Pete eventually and wanted to make sure that was THE stat. So, of course, Fed was hands down the GOAT when he did finally get to 15. All other metrics mattered not. The fact he added to that made Fed fans gloat even more: It's ALL about the Slam count. Nothing else matters.
When Rafa had an overwhelming head to head v Fed? Didn't matter. Fed had the slam count.
When Nole got the double career slam and won four in a row? Didn't matter. Fed had the slam count.
Okay. That makes sense, I guess. Slam count is all that mattered and Fed had that in his pocket. So he gets to be GOAT. No further questions please.
But then a funny thing happened on a way to Melbourne. Rafa won. Then, OVERNIGHT, the slam count became NOT the end all/be all. Suddenly, it was the beauty of the game. Or how balanced Rafa's slam total was compared to Fed's. Or it was weeks at number one. Or anything that might make Fed look like he true GOAT.
This got even more desperate when Rafa added another and Novak passed him at Wimby.
Hysterical.

I think the whole GOAT debate is stupid anyway. How can you compare eras? Laver played when three of four Slams were on grass and everyone had a wooden racket. .Also, you can't really compare pre-Open Era (pre-1968 when only amateurs were allowed to play Slams) to the Open Era (1968 on) when everyone could play Slams. In the pre-Open Era, the best players always went pro so they could earn money and weren't allowed to play Slams.
I prefer naming GOTEs--greatest of their era. Federer straddled two eras. He went pro in the Sampras-Agassi era as those two were winding down. I don't believe Wimbledon had slowed its grass surface yet to encourage more rallies. Federer dominated from 2004-2007. Then Nadal, who is a determined and tireless worker and competitor, took Federer down at Wimbledon. Even though Federer bounced back in 2009 as Nadal was injured, that was the game-changer. Nadal was like kryptonite to Federer. Nadal's strengths played into Federer's weaknesses. It was always a bad match-up for Federer, particularly on clay where Nadal just had to pound ball after ball to Fed's backhand until it broke down completely. Credit to Federer for turning around the H2H late in his career, but also its forever a stain on his legacy that he lost so much to his greatest rival. Fed also has a losing record against Djokovic.
I also think that, as great as the Big 3 are, they benefited from the next generations being weak mentally. Usually at some point the subsequent generations start to take over. Someone comes along, or more than one person comes along, to take on the reigning generation. That simply didn't happen. You had talented players who could not sustain week in, week out winning. And they crumble versus the Big 3, particularly in Slams that are best of five sets and require more mental toughness. That was more than evident this year in the Slams as a hobbled Nadal took out one young gun after another as they fell apart mentally while an injured Nadal focused on winning despite his obstacles. Also, others crumbled to Djokovic at Wimbledon this year.
If you look at Open Era stats, Djokovic's are overall better than Nadal's. Nadal wins in Slam count, but Djokovic is all time leader in weeks at #1 and seasons as year-end #1, and has the most Masters 1000s. Nadal isn't even in the Top 5 for weeks at #1 because of his many absences due to injury. Djokovic also has the H2H advantage against both Nadal and Federer.
Overall, I really don't care about the GOAT debate or even the GOTE debate. Nadal, Federer and Djokovic are without a doubt three of the best to have ever played the game. Aesthetically, I prefer Federer's classic game. When he was on, he did amazing things and made them look pretty. Overall, I think Djokovic currently has the best stats of the three and the fewest weaknesses in his game. Nadal is the best competitor and strongest willed amongst the three. Whichever of the three you're a fan of, he's one of the greats.

Ben R: "With Djokovic staying in, one fewer player will get to play at #USOpen. Next into qualies would’ve been #242 Pol Martin Tiffon, who has made only $25,434 in prize money all year. The prize money for just getting into qualies, $21,000, could have meant a lot to him. If Djokovic wants to take the selfish route and wait as long as possible to the detriment of others, that’s his prerogative. I’m just documenting this because it’s wild to see a star who can’t legally enter the US (because of his own choices) desperately clinging on like this."

How would Djokovic not withdrawing effect qualies? Djokovic is ranked high enough for auto-entry. His spot wasn't supposed to go to a qualfier. The qualifying tournament will the the same size as always with 16 players qualifying for the main draw. When Djokovic withdraws or time simply runs out, the tournament will award someone with djokovic's spot - a "lucky loser" who lost in qualifying. If Djokovic had withdrawn before qualifying, they were never going to increase the size of the qualifying draw such that 17 players earned qualifier spots. Instead, they would have given a different player, who just missed the auto-entry cutoff at the cut-off date (usually weeks before the tournament), an automatic entry into the main draw.
by Anonymous | reply 115 | August 23, 2022 10:57 PM |
Agreed R107. The GOAT debate is actually super fun, but ultimately silly. Novak will have all the stats (he basically already does). However, Rafa actually has some interesting stats in regards to his Slam winning percentages - he's tends to be the best in the biggest stages. And Fed paved the way for the Big 3's reign. Each is just unbelievably impressive.
Rafa, Fed and Novak are the best ever by miles and miles. Picking your favorite among those three is more about style and personality. (Rafa is my favorite because he just never gives up. I love the tortoise way more than the hare by nature.)
by Anonymous | reply 116 | August 23, 2022 11:02 PM |
because if djokovic withdraws, the person next on the list gets a main draw entry, and that frees up a new spot in qualifying. That person would get $21,000 as well as a chance to qualify that they would not have got otherwise.

But, it doesn't matter. It will happen anyway. The lucky loser who takes Novak's place in the main draw will make more money than a hypothetical additional qualifier who gets a "chance to qualify." There's no change to how many people make in the main draw or qualifying and there's no change in the number of people who get paid one way or the other.

well sadly tennis isn't 1 of the most popular sports in the US. That means Tennis Channel doesn't get nearly as many viewers as say, ESPN. That means they can't afford to have all former top players as commentators. If you notice they only bring out the big names for slams, masters and other big events. Smaller tournament weeks like this one they leave to the likes of Bellis, Nick Monroe and other players who didn't achieve much.
Personally I think the standard should be commentators should have been at least top 20.

after Nadal, I left to get some food/drinks. Came back to catch the last 10 min of Russian asshole and daddy Fritz. Danii practiced great, from what I saw. Nick K practiced with Jack Sock after. It was OK. It got really hot and I was quite bothered by the heat...
Nick was serving great and Jack Sock changed his shirt 2 times. He changed his shirt after just 10 min of play. He wasn't even sweaty. I think he just wanted some attention or something...they took breaks after just 10 min of play. Nadal would play for 20min before sitting down and he wasn't doing much of his OCD stuff until the last half hour of the practice.
Also their two girlfriends were just standing at the back of the court for a long time, then they found seats and sat down. Nick got lots of cheers and he wore a Kobe Bryant tshirt. Next on the schedule was Diego S. but he came on court early, he just stood in the back watching and then he walked onto the court 10 min early. Nick K was sitting down resting. I couldn't hear what he said but he was bitching about something to his team for over 5 min. He sat there looking at his phone until it was his time to leave. Jack Sock left 5 min early and signed autographs etc.

Granted chasing a tennis career, which is very expensive, can easily be done when your parents are rich, but still. Plenty of players have had funding, but had anywhere near as good careers as Pegula. She seems to have worked hard and she's the epitome of "no drama." In fact, she's pretty boring.
This is the ultimate "rich girl" thing from her Wiki bio:
"In 2021, Pegula married Taylor Gahagen, a corporate executive for Pegula Sports and Entertainment and animal philanthropist." Hmmm, is this plot in your fantasy novel, R195? Yahoo Sports also says he has zero chance of playing at the USO after CDC clarified their vaccination requirements today for overseas visitors :
Novak Djokovic's chances of playing at the US Open appear dead and buried. Novak Djokovic's hopes of playing at the US Open appear dead and buried after a key change on the website of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Djokovic is currently barred from entering the United States because he is unvaccinated against Covid-19, while US border rules still requiring overseas visitors to show proof of vaccination to gain entry. However there was a chain of thought that those rules could soon be relaxed, allowing Djokovic to enter the United States and play in the final grand slam of the year. The CDC website previously said under the 'travel' section: "The CDC is reviewing this page to align with updated guidance." That came after the CDC changed a number of domestic rules which saw unvaccinated citizens granted the same rights as those who are vaccinated. The message had Djokovic fans holding out hope that he might be allowed into the US after all, but on Wednesday the message disappeared. The website now states that overseas travelers must be fully-vaccinated in order to enter the country, which appears to rule out any chance that Djokovic will play. "One day before the US Open draw, the CDC has removed all reference to the review it is holding to bring the international travel rules into line with the domestic rules (vaccinated and unvaccinated people being treated the same). Probably it for Novak Djokovic now," journalist Sam Street tweeted.

Andy Murray is set to undergo sweat-testing in a bid to resolve his cramping issues with the three-time Grand Slam champion desperate to 'get to the bottom' of his latest fitness problem ahead of the US Open
by Anonymous | reply 200 | August 25, 2022 2:19 PM |
He said: 'I'm doing sweat testing in these conditions to see if anything has changed in that respect because the sports drinks and the electrolytes is made specifically on my sweat tests, but I haven't done sweat testing for quite a number of years.
'I don't know if anything has changed in that respect but we'll try and get to the bottom of it.
'Because let's say if it was purely from hydration, then obviously after I got cramp like in Washington I made sure that I was not dehydrated going into the next matches.
'And if it was eating related then I made sure all of those boxes were ticked. It's not just been as simple as changing how much I've been drinking or what I'm drinking so I need to get some answers.'
Murray has failed to claim an ATP title this year for the first time since 2019 - despite reaching finals in both Sydney and Stuttgart.
The 35-year-old is also attempting to reach the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time since 2017 in New York next week, yet the Scotsman does believe that the tournament is the 'most open' it has ever been.
He added: 'I would imagine some of the guys who you would expect to go deep, will do. [Daniil] Medvedev, Rafa [Nadal], [Carlos] Alcaraz and [Stefanos] Tsitsipas - these guys.
'I do think there will be an opportunity for Cam [Norrie]. He's been very consistent against the guys ranked beneath him for the most part this year.
'He's definitely got a chance of a good run. When it's hot and humid that can help his game and the courts here are quite fast.'
He added: 'Physically I feel pretty good in terms of discomfort and pain and everything but then I've been having the cramping the last few weeks so that's been frustrating.

R199 I don't see it's happening, there are only two days left and he is not even in the US, but there are a few insist he will be there on Monday, but how?
by Anonymous | reply 202 | August 25, 2022 2:23 PM |
R195 What are your sources? Someone asked the poster who said that there would be a meeting to discuss giving Djokovic a waiver (which made no sense since the US Open doesn't have the power to decide the vaccination policy for non-citizens traveling in) for their source and the poster didn't reply there either. Not sure if you're the same poster but the US Open doesn't have that power. It's the CDC/government.
by Anonymous | reply 203 | August 25, 2022 2:26 PM |
R202 Who are those people and what are their sources?
For the person who says that Djokovic may get an exemption because he's rich and famous, look at how that worked out in the case of Australia. If the government is pro-vaccination they will hate sending out a message to the public that there's one rule for them, another for a rich athlete.

R188... stats aren't record, and thus history?
I stand by my post, I knew this as many others do (about martina's 1983 record) , i expect a top professional tennis player whose commentating and just recently retired to know this information!
same as jim courier who stated that martina lost that 1 match in 1983 to kathy rinaldi! No, it was kathy horvath....
guess it's me, but if I was a professional tennis player i would know and be in love with the entire history and records of my sport especially since we are not talking 1883!...

The draw is tomorrow. So it's gotta happen by then. The draw, not the start of the tournament on Sunday or Monday, is the cutoff if he hasn't officially withdrawn from the tournament. I think the visa waiver thing is just a rumor and his fate has already been sealed.
by Anonymous | reply 206 | August 25, 2022 3:18 PM |
R206 He can still stay in the draw and turn up for his first match or not. That's what happened in Australia - he stayed in the draw but when he was not able to turn up for his first match it screwed up the seeding (which is another good reason why he should do the right thing and withdraw before the draw is made).
by Anonymous | reply 208 | August 25, 2022 3:25 PM |
That's a good point, R208. But at the AO, wasn't it all still technically unresolved with the Australian government and Tennis Australia - I remember all the last minute hearings and shenanigans.
In this case, it sounds like the basis for keeping him out of the US is clear and resolved. Therefore, I'd assume that the USO will not place him in the draw tomorrow unless there really is some crazy last minute thing that allows him to be in the U.S.

'NoleFam' (cringe) have a conspiracy theory that he's not allowed a special waiver (the only one he would potentially be eligible for is that it's 'in the national interest' for him to be able to enter the U.S. unvaccinated) because Moderna is one of the sponsors of the U.S. Open. Moderna are a sponsor but it just underlines that the government's official position is to be pro-Covid vaccination so I don't see them thinking it would be in the national interest to give a waiver to a prominent anti-vaxxer.
by Anonymous | reply 213 | August 25, 2022 4:20 PM |
yes, i went yesterday and i saw the Moderna sponsor sign at Ashe stadium, among the rest like J.P. morgan, Chase etc. they were still painting the stadium floor grey. we were asked to move from our seats from the baseline. I moved to courtside unfortunately sat next to annoying as fuck kids with big tennis balls ( $48) who were not even watching the practice, they were looking at their phone and talking and blocking the aisle and begging for used tennis balls.
Jack sock the dumb jock. at the end of his practice, the kids were begging "here, here, etc" He didn't throw it their way, instead he hit one with his racket all the way up to the nosebleeds where it was empty...what a stupid American. not a fan.

by Anonymous | reply 236 | August 25, 2022 9:22 PM |
Yeah, this is Rafa's easiest draw in a long, long time.
Fognini or Karatsev might give him trouble in the R2. But only if Rafa's still a little rusty and they play their absolute best.
But beyond that, he's avoided all other tough wildcard players until the SF. I guess Norri and Shapo have the potential to give him trouble on paper in the QFs. But an in form Rafa should win against either.

R236, please compare the Tiafoe and Giron asses.
by Anonymous | reply 238 | August 25, 2022 9:26 PM |
R238, Tiafoe's is a little more shelf-y - somewhat higher and a little narrower (probably has nice ass side dimple), and a bit firmer/more muscle-y. Giron's is broader (he has thicker legs) and a little more fleshy over the muscle, but still shapely and hot.
All of this is based on the asses in shorts of course. I's love to see the nude versions. Lol.

Saw Mark Knowles say on the Tennis Channel he spoke to Djokovic 4-5 days ago...he said Djokovic was hoping to "use his connections" to somehow be able to play at the USO
clearly that didn't work! lmfao the delusion. I'd love to know which contact(s) he pinned his hopes on. If it was someone at the USTA, then that proved ultimately fruitless because unlike the Tennis Australia debacle, the USTA was not going to try and sidestep the government
It really annoys me that almost everyone in the tennis world apart from a small number of journalists have overlooked or ignored just how far Djokovic took this in Australia. Some say "even if you don't agree with him you have to admire him sticking to his principles". They forget or refuse to mention how he tried to find a loophole in the Aussie policies. He either got infected just before the deadline and hoped to use "having antibodies" as a way to override the requirement to get vaccinated (while at the same time going to a tennis kids' clinic and exposing them all) OR he got a corrupt doctor to say he tested positive when he in fact was negative to try and gain entry to Australia with the lie that he had built up antibodies from his fake infection. So he was trying to lie and scam his way past the rules there. That part gets left out which annoys me.
If Djokovic really accepted the consequences of not being vaccinated he never would have tried that stunt in Australia. He also wouldn't have waited until the day of the USO draw being made to withdraw. Clearly he keeps hoping to get special treatment and avoid following science, medical advice and the rules of governments.
No one should feel sorry for this asshole. Yes as a super fan of tennis, I want all the title contenders to be at every slam and masters, even if I'm not a fan. Djokovic did this to himself. He could have played in Australia, Canada and the US if he just got the fucking vaccine. He chose not to because he's a nutjob but still expects everyone to make special exemptions for him. So glad he's being treated like a regular person instead. Hope he never wins another slam

Emma Raducanu is left in TEARS during US Open practice session as she struggles just days ahead of her first-round match
The defending champion admitted to not feeling comfortable during the session, but played down fears that there was a threat to her participation.
'I had a few small things, got a couple blisters, a bit of a niggle here and there,' she said later.
Practising with Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova, Raducanu hit for 40 minutes before taking a prolonged break and pointing towards the lower part of her right arm.
She appeared to be tearful.
However, she then resumed and ultimately completed her allotted time in what were hot and steamy temperatures, while not looking entirely happy, especially when it came to serving.

Does the USO start on Sunday now? A couple of Slams recently have gone to Sunday starts - probably just due to the massive draws and giving the tournament more scheduling leeway when inevitable rain or heat delays restrict play to the few courts with roofs.

by Anonymous | reply 281 | August 27, 2022 5:26 PM |
Not insensitive at all, R281. I'm sure they have the full presentation/ceremony, whatever they're gonna do, ready for the first round or any round in which Serena might lose. I'm a big Serena fan. I get saying goodbye to the USO, but I hate watching her play now. It's laughable. Most historically great players don't retire at their peaks, but Serena let it go to long IMO.

The rest of the people in the lobby chimed in and also wished her good luck, she said thank you and left. I was really there to see if I could bump into Nadal but no luck so far.
by Anonymous | reply 285 | August 27, 2022 5:40 PM |

Venus almost seems to do it out of boredom. She's gets to travel the world, engage with a community that she knows, play a little tennis, and, until now, support her sister. She never seemed to care about being an ex-Slam champ and No. 1 who had substantively decreased results. Athletes have talked a lot about difficulty for some in transitioning to post-playing life. For us, it seems ridiculous - we'd have no problems with all that money finding things to do or NOT do. I wonder if Venus is going through that a little.

Meet Matteo Berrettini, the model tennis player bringing his good looks to New York
It was love at first sight.
When Matteo Berrettini competes at the US Open Tennis Championships in Flushing on Monday, there may be a few new fans making a racquet in the stands.
The 26-year-old, 6’5″ Italian powerhouse, who models for Hugo Boss, is serving up some serious heartache — and his admirers aren’t shy about putting the ball in his court.
“Someone help me out how do I start watching tennis for my new husband Matteo Berrettini,” one smitten fan tweeted.
“I’ve never watched tennis a day in my life but might start watching now because Matteo Berrettini,” tweeted Magge Chrstine.
But Berrettini isn’t stringing anyone along.
“I don’t really know what to say about that,” he told The Post. “Hopefully, they start liking my look, I guess, and then they eventually like the tennis as well.”
The Roman native made history as the first Italian male to make it to the quarterfinals of all four Grand Slam events.
His runway career took flight when a Hugo Boss exec saw him being interviewed after losing at Wimbledon in 2021.
“I think one of the reasons why they chose me is also my personality. I hope it is, that’s what they told me,” he said. “So I’m glad this thing is coming out when I play.”
Although Berrettini, who is No. 15 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings, never considered modeling as a side hustle, he said there was one person who was always did — his grandmother, Lucia.
“But I thought she was saying it more because you know, I’m her grandkid, so for your grandma, you are always the most beautiful person on the planet,” he said.
Although Lucia can’t travel much, her friends take photos of her grandson on billboards around the world and she sends those to him.
“In the beginning it was weird, but now it’s funny,” he said.
He was unaware of the 10″x9″ billboard with his image in the Time Warner Center. He won’t get the chance to see it for himself, he said, “I’m gonna send my mom to take a picture.”
But he did have time for pizza.
On this New York trip, Berrettini made sure to stop and eat at Ribalta on East 12th. “A really good friend of mine is friends with the owner and he brought me there,” he said. “And I have to say, the pizza was really good … I feel like in New York, it’s not that easy to find good Italian food, but when you find it, it feels like Italy.”
His father, Luca and mother, Claudia will be at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center cheering him on as they typically do. “When they can, they always come to big tournaments especially,” he said.
The accomplished athlete, who in 2021 was the first Italian to play in the Wimbledon singles finals, falling four sets to Novak Djokovic, made headlines at the fourth round of the Open last year for his kindness on the court.
When he defeated Germany’s Oscar Otte — who suffered a wrist injury and fell over the net during the match — he gestured for the crowd to applaud Otte instead of him.
“I try to be as fair as possible, it’s true that it’s your opponent, but that doesn’t mean he can’t get injured or he’s gonna fall and I’m not gonna help him,” he said.

R142 Yes.

lmao the Italian Americans in NYC are going to be pissed that Berrettini said "it's hard to find good Italian food in NYC"
he's gorgeous but he annoys me because he doesn't take care of his skin. It's clear he doesn't wear sunblock and you can see lots of wrinkles forming already before he's 30. Then you have his increasing number of tattoos which ruins his look further. He'll always be very good looking but I fear he's going to look withered and have more tats in a few years

Samsonova could likely be a dark horse at the USO. I hope she doesn't win the title. She's talented but today in her speech after winning Cleveland she said of herself and finalist Sasnovich "we were both without a flag. We are good people".
bitch you're not a victim. You're playing without a flag because of Putin and his regime's despicable actions

Interesting Berrettini pimped Ribalta, which was a 20-something posing scene last time I was there but once you got service, you got served up undercooked pizza, supposedly top-shelf drinks that tasted like swill, and a lot of attitude.
by Anonymous | reply 301 | August 27, 2022 9:23 PM |
I wonder which pizza he got. Likely the parma. None of them look that impressive
I know though that Italians often get possessive about their food and don't like it when Americans come up with more creative versions/options

by Anonymous | reply 315 | August 27, 2022 11:57 PM |
I think his "unique game" - basically those ground strokes with such an abbreviated back swing developed due to injury. Basically he once had longer, more traditional strokes. I bet his racquet is heavier than most players due to the short strokes and he's often blocking back the pace of the other player.

For those of you who are making fun of Naomi Osaka, here is an interview of, um, you know, Chris Evert, I think, um, talking about like how she's, um, trying to put, I think, some top spin, you know, on her backhand.
You don't become worst tennis commentator out of thin air, you know: there are years and years of hard work beneath the skill. And quite a lot of sex too as far as Chrissie, the man eater, is involved.
by Anonymous | reply 324 | August 28, 2022 9:27 AM |
Chrissie's interview would have cult status if she had just finished her remarks with "Also...", a little nod and back to you Mr. Interviewer, à la Sarah Palin.

Sarah Palin has a BA degree in journalism, donchaknow?
Poor Chris, that's another thing that made Martina so much more interesting. She had opinions on everything and wasn't shy about sharing them, even in broken English. Also, players didn't have media training like there is today, responses were much more genuine and off the cuff.
by Anonymous | reply 327 | August 28, 2022 11:51 AM |
I heard that Osaka was something like the second favorite among oddsmakers.
I find that bizarre. It’s almost as though she’s just going through the motions these days.
Are there others who think she may never again win a tourney, let alone a Slam, at least unless and until she rediscovers some passion for the sport?
by Anonymous | reply 328 | August 28, 2022 12:08 PM |
I watched the match between Mannarino and Djere, and I came to the realization that Mannarino's game is about as powerful as the average top 20 WTA player. At most! But it's nice to see someone sprinkling puff balls all over the court finally win a tournament. I wonder if he always played like that, or if he adapted his style (as in softened his strokes) to the fact that he was sidelined and essentially done for the sport by a perpetual wrist injury.
by Anonymous | reply 329 | August 28, 2022 12:25 PM |
R325..you're comparing 16 year old Evert who was still in high school and had not yet won anything of importance to a 4 time grand slam champion Osaka whose now 24 and won her first slams at the age of 20 and 21.... bad analogy....
by Anonymous | reply 330 | August 28, 2022 3:24 PM |
Agree, R325. The Evert/pencil/worst commentator never was accurate nor funny.
by Anonymous | reply 331 | August 28, 2022 4:33 PM |
I don't mind Chrissie any more. Maybe I've gotten used to her. Alexandra Stevenson is by far the worst commentator working today.
by Anonymous | reply 332 | August 28, 2022 4:40 PM |
R328 it’s a wide open event and she’s won it twice before. Historically at hard court slams she usually flops in round three or goes all the way, so it’s hard to rate her odds.
by Anonymous | reply 333 | August 28, 2022 4:52 PM |
R333 yeah if Osaka makes it past rd 3 maybe she can win it all. Her draw is kind of hard though.
by Anonymous | reply 334 | August 28, 2022 4:58 PM |
Evert's at least smart enough to know what she doesn't know, effusively praising players who focus on education and lamenting her own intellectual limitations.
by Anonymous | reply 335 | August 28, 2022 5:05 PM |
What have you seen from Naomi in the past two years that gives you any confidence she can make it to the second week and be a credible force?
The women’s game would be much stronger with her at the top of her game, but I haven’t seen any evidence that she’s capable of replicating it these days.
She looks disinterested… almost content to give a token effort.
by Anonymous | reply 336 | August 28, 2022 5:06 PM |
Agree, R331. Evert is one of the greats to have played the game. She understands tennis. Her record of going 13 years winning at least one Slam per year is hers alone. Her consistency at the top of the game was remarkable. She weathered many great rivals and still kept winning Slams. Unlike today's players both male and female, she, Martina, Graf, and pre-stabbing Seles had the grit to win week-in and week-out and always showed up in the later rounds of Slams.
Another astounding stat that Evert has is that she reached the semifinals or better in 52 of the 56 majors she played, including 34 consecutive majors from 1971 to 1983. I don't think Evert gets nearly enough credit for how damn good she was.

Ego must know no bounds!... the guy was a idiot and i'm sorry but he couldn't even TALK.. Obviously he was hired because he was both black and gay....a win win for diversity, who cares if they aren't qualified to do the job!

James Blake, Chanda Rubin and Nick Monroe do commentary for Tennis Channel on occasion. Blake is awful. Rubin sounds too much like a soccer mom. Monroe, though being unknown to even most die-hard tennis fans, is very good. ESPN should hire him if they need some more diversity.

I like Chanda too. Like Blake she is more than qualified having been in the top 10 with deep runs in slams and some titles
Stevenson is good when she gets technical about serving because that was her biggest strength and got her into the top 20 as well as that Wimbledon run. The rest of her commentary is blah.

Whatever the result on Monday night, the US Open will put on a farewell ceremony for Serena Williams as she brings the curtain down on her glittering career.
Williams will play Danka Kovinic on Arthur Ashe in the evening session, the standout tie in the first day of the US Open.
The 40-year-old Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam winner, is expected to retire after her home major, meaning Monday's match could feasibly be her last in singles competition if she were to lose.
And according to the New York Post, the 23,800 sell-out crowd will watch on after her match as US tennis pays tribute to her stunning career.
The publication adds that Williams will around 100 guests on hand, comprising of family and friends, to watch her in action.
Williams heads into Monday's match with a 1-3 record since returning to action at Wimbledon earlier this year.

US Open stars divided as tournament bosses allow coaches to guide players from the stands for the first time... with British number one Cameron Norrie saying he won't use it and Taylor Fritz admitting he 'hates' the rule change
Coaching from the stands is to be allowed on a trial basis at this year's US Open, a move that has split the locker room.
Whatever an individual's view, it is a major departure from the sport's founding principles that a player is out there on their own and has to think for themselves about tactics.
Stefanos Tsitsipas, who has been regularly called for coaching violations, is unsurprisingly in favour. British No 1 Cam Norrie is among those against.
'I would say I prefer the traditional way of one versus one,' commented Norrie. 'But it doesn't change much for me, I'm not going to use it too much.'
Top American Taylor Fritz went further, declaring that he 'hates' the trial: 'I think that figuring it out for yourself on the court is a massive part of our sport. You have to change things up for yourself, figure out yourself what's going on, adjust to what the opponent's doing.'
Top American Taylor Fritz went further, declaring that he 'hates' the trial: 'I think that figuring it out for yourself on the court is a massive part of our sport. You have to change things up for yourself, figure out yourself what's going on, adjust to what the opponent's doing.'
The idea, dubious at best, is that it will add interest for TV viewers. Certainly the coaches with king-sized egos will enjoy the attention.
The timing is strange after the 2021 US Open proved to be one of the most engrossing tournaments in history, and not just because Emma Raducanu caused a sensation.
Hopefully Wimbledon, mindful of the game's traditions, will have nothing to do with this latest innovation.
Norrie's general view that the effects of its introduction will be limited may be right, at what looks the most open event for both men and women in years.
In the absence of Novak Djokovic defending champion Daniil Medvedev probably justifies being the bookies' favourite. However neither he nor his closest challenger, Rafael Nadal, have much in the way of form coming in. Nick Kyrgios definitely has a chance, although he may not react well to the pressure of expectation.
The mercurial Australian has a late match on the opening evening against his close friend and compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis.
World No 1 Iga Swiatek is one of those admitting she finds the ball harder to control at Flushing Meadows, making the women even harder to pick.

I’m thinking any Serena ceremony will be held after she and Venus lose a doubles match, so don’t be surprised if they get a night session.
by Anonymous | reply 379 | August 29, 2022 12:18 PM |
I just pray the opening night ceremony won't be the cheesy, maudlin spectacle is usually is ... I usually have to turn it off, it's so cringe-inducing.

Wondering how many times they'll state Serena has won the open 6 times and how that is the all time record, conveniently forgetting or on purpose not stating that Evert has the same number?
Will anyone bring up the how many incidents of Serena's bad behavior at the Open. Sorry, but the praise into worship of her is way overboard. What other players has had this send off? I credit it to today's culture of over the top spectacle, everyone is a Superstar, and so on.

r373, Sra. Rafa is having a difficult pregnancy and may need an operation at 31 weeks. The papers report that Rafa's sister is with her. No one can ask Rafa about it because, he's private. If she were his real wife he would be at her bedside, not his sister.

They are honoring Serena tonight even if she wins, she has invited over 100 friends tonight. She is on the cover of time mag

If you're a big tennis fan and want to watch everything, be careful about ESPN+. ESPN+ is the hub for all streaming ESPN content - from all ESPN-owned channels. An ESPN+ subscription does not allow you to watch all the content on the platform unless you have a cable package that has all the channels on the platform. So, if you JUST have an ESPN+ subscription, it will allow you to watch content that is designated ESPN+ or ESPN3. All games and shows on ESPN+ will very clearly designate the content - ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3, ESPN+, Longhorn Network, ACC Network, etc. Occasionally, content will show up twice - designated as ESPN and ESPN+, for example.
For tennis Slams, ESPN+ (standing alone) usually gets you a ton of content that is designated ESPN+ and ESPN3, a lot of matches to choose from. But the final rounds - SFs and final are sometimes designated ESPN or ESPN2, which, again, you can't watch on ESPN+ if you don't have a corresponding cable package with ESPN and ESPN2. This is how it was for Wimbledon this year; not sure what the US Open will do.
But, in those circumstances, there is often an ESPN+ workaround. ESPN+ will usually allow you to watch the ESPN Deportes Spanish-language feed of content that is being broadcast on ESPN or ESPN2. This is how I watched the Wimbledon semis and finals on ESPN+ without having a cable package with ESPN. If you don't mind not having English speaking commentators, this is a good option. An ESPN+ subscription for a month is significantly cheaper than YouTube TV or Sling - which would have ESPN and ESPN2 as channels.
Obviously none of this matters if you have a cable package with ESPN. But just a heads up if you were going to get ESPN+ to watch the US Open. And, again, I don't know for sure if they'll designate the later rounds as ESPN content, but there's a good chance they will.

McEnroe is on Eurosport spewing his antivaxx bullshit. Saying it's so sad that Novaxx can't play, he respects his choice blah blah. Clijsters is there too and she is SO done. She is just rolling her eyes. It's so funny.

R383 Exactly. I think Rafa cares about his public image and he wants a family. He married his childhood friend, heck maybe they did date at one point but I doubt they are together now. Sure, they're married, but they have the weirdest relationship ever. I saw candid pics of them together in public... walking several feet apart. They didn't look close at all. I think Rafa is gay, they're not having sex, maybe they used a turkey baster. But they're both getting what they want out of this arrangement, Maria gets fame and money, while Rafa gets a family. Rafa is a good guy and will probably be a wonderful dad as well. Many gays marry women and have kids. Sure, it was more common before, thankfully it's not common anymore. But some still do it, and you have to remember he is famous. Take Hollywood for example. In high school who is in drama class? Gays. Then why are so few actors in Hollywood gay? Well... Hollywood has a ton of gay actors, it's just that most are closeted. Some are even married with kids. Some are bi. There are many stories. Nobody is the same.

Since the year after 9/11, the opening ceremony has been too militaristic. The Open isn’t about patriotism or the armed forces. It’s tennis. Cut the crap.

BTW, he's an American youngster who got a wildcard after winning the NCAA title this spring. His dad is Bryan Shelton, a former pro tennis player who had a modest career, and the only college tennis coach to win both women's (at Georgia Tech) and men's (at Florida) NCAA titles.

Once again, there IS and ALWAYS will be a argument on who is the goat... martina, steffi and chrissie each have records over serena if not more records than serena... these commentators expressing serena is the goat as FACT but it's just their simplistic follow the crowd comment..
i would laugh so hard if serena lost tonight to a 'nobody"...

#1... serena wasn't welcomed when she came on the tour (by whom?) says alexandra stevenson (who says she too wasn't "welcomed"..
#2:...serena had to go thru so much? Like What.... the whole myth of how she and venus left compton and started their pro career with NO HELP from anyone, and stayed in compton 24/7 is I guess not the right story?
Yes, she and venus were a rarity in a mostly white sport but otherwise, these people commentating are acting like she's freaking harriet tubman!
coco gauff: "she is unquestionable the greatest of all time" says who? it's fact because why?

Fowler - who could easily sit on his football work and make millions - specifically sought to be a tennis host because he loves tennis. I never thought he was great but never thought he was awful. He's been around so long and is known by the players that I think he's a little bit bolder with arguing/disagreeing with them than he used to be.

Not sure I buy the whole “unwelcomed” story. Does she mean fans or other players? We know Hingis was a cunt, but who else? Capriati? Jen just didn’t let her intimidate her. If she means fans, that’s different. But we also know Serena is a diva and a bit of a baby and kind of expected other players to just let her win like Venus did.
