Has there ever been a more beautiful woman than Greta Garbo in her prime?

So much about DL's claims that lesbians are unattractive.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | August 21, 2022 4:45 PM |
No. Greta Garbo was very severe looking.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | August 21, 2022 4:46 PM |
I can think of lots of women more beautiful.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | August 21, 2022 4:49 PM |
I watched one of her silent films - A WOMAN OF AFFAIRS - a couple of days ago and there's no mistaking her beauty and star quality. And her chemistry with John Gilbert is obvious. I generally like her earlier in her career than later when I feel she became more self-conscious about being "GARBO."
Interesting note about the film itself: the plot is typically silly for the period, but Douglas Fairbanks Jr. plays the brother of Garbo's character and he is clearly in love with a character played by Johnny Mack Brown, though everyone calls it "hero worship." True to the period, the brother has a drinking problem that only gets worse.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | August 21, 2022 4:58 PM |
I'm not gay, I'm a...hero worshipper.

I found young Joan more beautiful in Grand Hotel.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | August 21, 2022 5:09 PM |
As a child, I used one of our rare visits to the nearest city to go to the bookstore's film section and find a book of still photographs of Garbo, arranged by the movie from which they originated. I purchased the book and would often leaf through it afterwards. All this at the age of about 10. Floridly pre-gay!
by Anonymous | reply 10 | August 21, 2022 5:49 PM |
How does someone label anyone as the "most beautiful ever"? We can never know since beauty standards change constantly. What modern society has deemed attractive now, scrawny with bolt on tits, would have been sent off to a nunnery in the middle ages because the parents would have realized she was too ugly for anyone to marry unless she had tons of money and connections. The only portrait of a women from the past I've seen who would still pass as gorgeous these days is Emma, Lady Hamilton.

Yes she was one the great beauties in film. I won’t post a pic- you can easily see why in any on line search. Elizabeth Taylor when not heavy was quite a vision. Grace Kelly. Heddy Lamar. Vivian Leigh. Julie Christie.

R13, what year is that picture of Isabella from? She looks amazing there.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | August 21, 2022 9:52 PM |
Greta Garbo was a true beauty back in the day but because her movies and photos are so dated it's difficult to compare them to beautiful stars of today.

Her haircut was timeless. She kept it simple and didn’t bow to trends. And she lost weight which gave her face contour and dimension. The fact that she was filmed in black and white and wore the heavy movie makeup to enhance her looks. But beautiful? I’d say that she was photogenic. And her weight loss didn’t hide the fact that she was big boned, with large hands and feet.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | August 22, 2022 1:07 AM |
R24, what do you mean by she didn't bow to trends regarding her hair? Just wondering.

"The Silent Lovers" covers her early years in Hollywood and the love affair with John Gilbert. Mackenzie Phillips plays Lillian Gish!

Has a biopic ever been made about Greta?
No. It would be so boring, the woman was a neurotic bore. Retired at 36 then all she did for the rest of her life was walk around New York city, every day, for hours
by Anonymous | reply 33 | August 22, 2022 4:49 AM |
I read a story about Garbo. Jackie Onassis thought Garbo was fascinating and if she saw her on a New York street, which was quite often, Jackie would often follow her for a few blocks unbeknown to Garbo. Ironic, one legend following another.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | August 22, 2022 4:51 AM |
Bobbie Brown from Warrant's Cherry Pie video would make a great biopic. She fucked a lot of rockstars. She was a ho.

Cindy Crawford in her prime. Not many can beat that.

[quote] Has there ever been a more beautiful woman than Greta Garbo in her prime?
Technically, probably not.
Julie Burchill wrote in GIRLS ON FILM that her features were so precise it looked like the face had been put together using a slide rule.

Gigi Hadid Is supposed to be the most beautiful woman in the world. Because she has a scientifically perfect face. All the women mentioned with scientifically perfect faces are almost never beautiful as far as I'm concerned. John Crawford always looked hard. Michelle Pfeiffer young Candace Bergen, Sharon Stone, Julie Christy, and Sharon Tate are all beautiful.

Why do so many hetero females HATE gay women, and yet, are so loving toward gay men? I've heard many women talk about Garbo like she's disgusting or something. Showing their true colors, perhaps.

R43 Many? So you've heard two women talk shit about her, therefore all straight women hate her? People don't even know if she was bi or gay. And have you ever read some threads on DL? Judging by them, it would mean all gay men are misogynistic racist assholes

Rita Hayworth) It's true, the studio has built me into such a glamour girl, that every man thinks I must be dated up, and no one asks me out. I can't get a date. I tell you it's depressing.
Gracie Allen) Oh cheer up Rita, maybe that isn't the reason at all. Maybe it's your looks
by Anonymous | reply 67 | November 17, 2022 11:04 PM |
Madonna was gorgeous (before she fucked up her face recently, of course). As beautiful as Julie Newmar, Liz Taylor, Raquel Welch, Sharon Tate, et al. Symmetrical features, lovely eyes, nose, and mouth. The only people who don’t see it (or pretend not to) are the deranged, obsessive Madonna haters
by Anonymous | reply 68 | November 17, 2022 11:09 PM |
I disagree R68. There's something wonky about the shape of her face - too wide - the middle is like a rectangle (turned sideways) and to me, it doesn't make her ugly, but only pretty and bordering on plain.
I think that's it - or maybe something else - but her face is sort of misshapen.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | November 17, 2022 11:21 PM |
I don’t know, I look at pictures 19 and 21 at that link, R69, and I see a gorgeous woman. A lot of similarities between her and Kate Winslet sometimes, at various points in their careers.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | November 17, 2022 11:27 PM |
Beautiful face, for sure. I don't think she was lesbian, she must have been bi, given her passionate affair with John Gilbert.
Personally, I prefer Daneuve and Liz Taylor.
Btw. Monica Bellucci is the sexiest middle aged woman on the world, but when young she lacked any sophistication.

Bar none. No other actress could come close to Garbo’s facial perfection.
She was instructed by the director to hold a blank expression in this shot, allowing the viewer to inscribe her sentiment upon her relinquishing her Swedish throne.
(p.s. Historically accurate, although the actual queen looked like a real dog. Pity).

Greta was not a lesbian! She was a bisexual. She fucked the shit out of John Gilbert. Maybe that’s how he obtained a high-pitched voice.

Makes me proud as a gay man to know one of the most beautiful faces ever belonged to a predominantly gay woman. That clip from Queen Christina is 90 years old (1933) and still can’t be beaten. Sad to think nearly 100 yrs on and women are only considered beautiful with fake, silly, pouty lips, fake tits, fake hair, fake nails, fake eyelashes, skin with 40 shades of foundation on, and they still have to photoshop the end result! The problem with Garbo is she refused to be photographed unless it was for a current film in production. So many photos of her qrelate to the character she was portraying in a film. So we have lost that connection. I can’t watch Camille. That silly Shirley Temple hair do finishes it for me. But the ending of Queen Christina says it all. Not about sexy. Being beautiful doesn’t mean trying to look sexy 24/7. Just pure beauty. I like her one time girlfriends description of her Mercedes De Acosta she was just a Swedish peasant with a face touched by God!

The Flesh and the Devil is worth seeing. She and Gilbert are wonderful and you can see why large audiences were so riveted by what was going on on screen and became fanatical about it. Love Grand Hotel with the two profiles and Crawford is more than a MGM star she gives an excellent performance. As much as I was in NY during the period of Garbo's walks I unfortunately never saw her.

Garbo was the most beautiful woman in the world depending on the qualities used to make that judgement. She was a fascinating mix of technical facial perfection-- like a sculpture of a Greek goddess-- and a soulful, mysterious sexuality that proved to be a rare and irresistible combination. She didn't possess the carnal, fleshy sexual beauty of Ava Gardner (who, to my taste, wins the title). Garbo wasn't pretty, but she was extremely beautiful.

I often see people claim Garbo was more beautiful in her prime than Joan Crawford. I don't think so. I don't even think she is better looking than late 1930s/early 1940s Bette Davis, honestly. Garbo is plain by comparison.
