OP CNN was NOT bought by any hedgefund, The new owner is Warner Bros. Discovery it is a publicly trader stock with over 56% of the company owned by Institutional investment firms like Vanguard and Charles Schwab with investors like maybe you and me through our retirement accounts, just like every other major corporation. It does have some very conservative board members such as John Malone and it is going in a new direction which does disturb me. It is important to be honest with what you post and you have not been.

It's refreshingly non-sensationalistic.

Why does it all come down to one channel?

On the Sunday morning show, State of the Union, Jake Tapper lets that asshole Repug Dan Crenshaw defend Trump for taking classified documents and said the FBI didn't need to go to extremes.
Meanwhile, the FBI had asked and Trump said he didn't have anything else. Crenshaw didn't even address the fact that Trump lied and should have had the documents at his house in Florida in the first goddamn place. And Jake Tapper barely followed up with anything of substance questioning Crenshaw in an obvious dishonest response.

Listen people. We need to have 5 or 10 national news networks.
Not just one.
Start your own media companies. CNN is just a few studios now and a name brand. They sold off a lot of their assets long ago and downsized into what they are today. Compressed to the max.
How much more can the shrink? Will they just become a headline algorithm.

This is because democrats were showing gains months ago in internal polls. Rich people have been shitting themselves in private while saying republicans have this in the bag in public.

If Trumpers had their way the traditional concept of the presidency will be replaced by a Russian/North Korean style hereditary dictatorship.
News networks will praise Trump (or one of his children who succeed him as dictator after he dies) 24/7.
People in the LGBT community will be forbidden to marry, forcibly converted to heterosexuality or their birth gender and institutionalized for life or executed if they fail.
Minorities will either be expelled from the country, killed in white nationalist led genocides or enslaved as servants.
Women will go back to being property that their husbands can abuse and control to how they see fit.
Anyone who badmouths the fearless great leader that is Trump will be brutally beaten and imprisoned.
Conversion to Christianity will be mandatory. Censorship will be everywhere.
Trump's America. This is what his supporters fantasize and wish for every day.

CNN has been part of one soulless conglomerate or another since 1996, OP. The situation is nothing new.
CNN (as part of Turner Broadcasting) was bought by conglomerate Time-Warner in 1996. Which was then bought by AOL in 2001 becoming AOL Time Warner. It was then spun off without AOL and became Time Warner again in 2003. Time Warner was then acquired by AT&T in 2018. Then, in 2021, AT&T spun off Time-Warner as Warner Media, selling it to merge with Discovery Inc.
That's about 5 different conglomerates in the last 25 years.

r51, the thing r35 doesn't grasp is that all the booby-traps the Republicans set up to protect their ability to govern with a plurality are ultimately going to backfire on them & leave the DEMOCRATS with an unassailable governing majority for decades.
Scenario: fall 2024. It's hard to believe, but Trump managed to outdo his previous shitshow. In 2023, Trump gets convicted of some semi-major offense, but seemingly gets "let off" with a wrist slap because he's a former President & nobody really wants to get snarled in the aftermath of trying to simultaneously imprison AND protect a man like Trump, knowing that if anything happens to him THEIR heads will roll. However... Trump's semi-victory proves to be pyrrihc... no prison, but as a result of his felony conviction, he's now ineligible to run for President in enough states that even if he won every single elector from every remaining red state, it would be mathematically impossible for him to win. His minions fight in court, but it's too late... the 2024 election happens, and he loses.
For the first time in history(?), several of the few "red" states where Trump could legally run ignore the Republican convention, and put Trump on the ballot as the Republican candidate. The lawsuits fly, Trump turns up the heat, and by this point, every mainstream Republican just wants him gone... by whatever means necessary.
Election Day 2024 arrives. Trump wins most of the states where he's on the ballot... but ultimately, wins fewer electoral votes than both Biden AND his Republican opponent (from the other states). Biden himself squeaks a nail-biting victory with a 1-3 electoral vote majority. The Democrats keep the Senate, but the Republicans manage to pull off a 1-seat majority in the House.
Trump's campaign goes nuclear and goes for broke, and his crazies attempt another "Hail Mary" pass to throw the election to the House. And almost... ALMOST succeed. Except... by this point, so many Republicans have *had* it with Trump and his enablers in the GOP, a few candidates who won as Republicans say, "enough is enough" and switch parties. Suddenly, the Democrats have a 1-seat majority. Then a 2-seat majority. Then 3, 4, and 5.
Fox News and Trump go nuclear, and start openly calling for "the people" to "take back the government" from "turncoats". It's the last straw. A week later, 17 more former Republicans have left the party... including Dan Crenshaw and half the Republican delegation from Florida. Romney and Collins switch. And, to everyone's jaw-dropping shock, after narrowly defeating Val Demmings, Marco Rubio switches, too. The floodgates fly open, and within days, the Democratic Party has supermajorities that would have been positively INCONCEIVABLE 2 years earlier.
The switch happens so fast, the Democratic Party's leaders THEMSELVES barely have time to react. What's left of the Republican Party goes for broke, and claims that all the elected officials who switched parties somehow "committed electoral fraud". To their annoyance, everyone just rolls their eyes and laughs at them. By this point, state and local Republican officials have joined the stampede for the door... and all those laws put in place to cement Republican dominance are now entrenching nominal Democrats who were elected or appointed as Republicans, but now want nothing to do with the party that's humiliated them and tainted their own reputations.

Republican Donald Trump, a far-right demagogue who campaigned on a slew of bigoted, xenophobic policies, has won the 2016 presidential election.
What was not often acknowledged in Trump's heated race against Democrat Hillary Clinton, however, was how her campaign fueled his rise to power.
The press was given their orders: 𝐖𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐢𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐬𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐨 [𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞] 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐥𝐲."
In its self-described "pied piper" strategy, the Clinton campaign proposed intentionally cultivating extreme right-wing presidential candidates, hoping to turn them into the new "mainstream of the Republican Party" in order to try to increase Clinton's chances of winning.
The Clinton campaign and Democratic National Committee called for using far-right candidates "as a cudgel to move the more established candidates further to the right." Clinton's camp insisted that Trump and other extremists should be "elevated" to "leaders of the pack" and media outlets should be told to "take them seriously."
On April 23, 2015, two weeks after Hillary Clinton officially declared her presidential campaign, her staff sent out a group message with information for a "strategy call." The email included as an attachment a "memo for the DNC discussion."Republican Donald Trump, a far-right demagogue who campaigned on a slew of bigoted, xenophobic policies, has won the 2016 presidential election in a shocking victory few people predicted.
What was not often acknowledged in Trump's heated race against Democrat Hillary Clinton, however, was how her campaign fueled his rise to power.
An email recently released by the whistleblowing organization WikiLeaks shows how the Clinton campaign and Democratic Party bear direct responsibility for propelling the bigoted billionaire to the White House.

Jake Tapper’s light-weight interview of Crenshaw was weak. It was poor follow-up, and Crenshaw delivered numerous false and unsubstantiated statements.
Jim Acosta didn’t let Chad Wolf get way with lies about the 2020 election.

"Kakogo kak Donald" . . . they just need to replace "Putin" with "Donald", it works perfectly with the lyrics and the tune's melody. No need to create a version in English either since MAGAts love all things Russian.
Fox News will gladly play it on heavy rotation. So will CNN, I guess.

Trumpanzees already followed Trump, and didn't need convincing, R13. But what CNN did was obsessively cover everything Trump did, said, or Tweeted on a continuous news loop, unparalleled publicity for which the Trump campaign never had to pay. To be fair, CNN is not the only one that did this; MSNBC's 'Morning Joe' also gave Trump media attention free of charge. This kept Trump in the minds of everyone watching CNN, which had an effect upon so-called 'swing voters.'

I moved in April and finally cut my cable TV cord. Since then, it's impossible for me to 'accidentally run into' cable news as I always have done. I rarely turned it on intentionally except when I was addicted during the nightmarish Trump era. Never watching any cable news network since my move has had a very positive effect on my overall emotional well being, and it has reduced my engagement in Twitter. I guess cable news used to provoke me to go on there and lash out about political topics that cable news networks would raise my hackles about.
I suggest cutting the cord. Let CNN die on the vine. It would not be a loss to the country.

Over the past few, years, CNN has morphed into MSNBC-lite. Problem is, they sucked at it and their ratings tanked big-time. CNN used to be my go-to news source, but I stopped watching when Chris Cuomo and Don Lemon became their central characters. I'm disgusted to see that an entire TV network that provides a Constitutionally protected, vital service to the American public is going to completely alter it's focus, simply because it has a billionaire or two on it's board of directors. I know that we revere wealth over all in this country, but the our democracy depends on the accurate truthful communication of news.
I have been watching CNN for years. I have come to feel comfortable with the familiar, and dare I say, I trust them. And now to think they will be forced to gratuitously inject a POV that is wholly anti thetical to the Truth, and succumb to "both siderism" sickens me. It is a very dangerous and disturbing development and it will have an impact on the stability of our already fragile democracy.
When you look at what is on offer out here: We have MSNBC which is Left. We have Fox which is Extremist Right Propaganda, hate mongering vitriol and fear. And then there are the network news organizations like NBC, ABC, and CBS. all woefully inadequate. CNN was the last opportunity we had to get decent news coverage and in depth context.
CNN was vital. It was flawed. It was often frustrating, but it was the best we had. And they do a wonderful job on disasters. Hurricanes, fllods, fires, terrorist attacks, wars, they always got it right. Now we are facing a future with more bullshit. I'm going to start following the news through Canadian or British outlets where I can, and PBS. Because this shit sucks.
by Anonymous | reply 110 | August 22, 2022 1:59 PM |
I don't like cable news at all (per my rant above), but I did feel CNN jumped the shark specifically when they paired Lemon and Cuomo as faux 'best buds' and had both of them promote 'the handoff' with their unwitty banter between their two shows. Lemon reposted his fans' videos watching and cheering during 'the handoff' and praising 'the handoff' every night. It was an unabashedly unjournalistic branded kind of entertainment and it really broke down the suspension of disbelief for me that CNN intended to be a journalistic organization and not an entertainment network.
But I guess CNN and the guys felt like they had to work with what they have. Anderson and David Muir do their pouty-swoony Instagram selfies to woo the viewers and Lemon and Cuomo can't really get away with that and so they tried another approach.
Journalism is an important aspect of a working democracy but entertainment journalism is a trap.

MSNBC would be center-left if Republicans would show up and make cogent arguments. The problem is we are in a post-truth era. And there is NO Republican platform, it is literally "what ever Don Douche says it is". It's a cult.
by Anonymous | reply 112 | August 22, 2022 2:06 PM |
CNN was the last opportunity we had to get decent news coverage and in depth context.
I disagree totally.
CNN is just another cable entertainment-news network that features maybe 15 percent reporting and 85 percent opinion-based commentary.
And it is not really 'news' in a well-rounded sense that is good for public consciousness. It is myopically focused on gossip and 'palace intrigue' aspects of politics, and on violent events like mass shootings, which it exploits ad nauseam.
Old-fashioned newspapers are a useful medium of comparison.
As a child, my family subscribed to the Washington Post, our local newspaper.
The front page featured the "big stories" of the sort that are discussed on cable news networks. Despite those news networks having 24 hours to discuss anything they want, they only discuss those big salacious headlines.
Then there was an international news section, which told us what is happening around the world. This doesn't exist in most cable news programming.
Then there was the metro section—local DC metro area news. That obviously does not exist in national cable news. And local TV news is pretty useless except to inspire fear and tell people about weather, traffic and sports. Very little nonviolent community info.
Then there was—and this is the big one for me—the health and science section.
Science! If an alien were to watch cable news on almost any given day, they would think we are a scienceless civilization. There is SO MUCH to discuss, and almost all of it is ignored. Major scientific discoveries happen every day. Occasionally a NASA story will make the news, and of course a pandemic. Other health issues that affect millions? Never. Environmental news? Never. Tech developments? Rarely. Biological discoveries? Absolutely never.
Newspapers have magazines that discuss history, culture and so on. These sorts of things occasionally have a place on cable news, but always with a political agenda, whereas print news used to sometimes feature just useful information sometimes, facts about science, facts about history, and so on.
TV news doesn't teach people with objective information; it lectures with opinions.
And the worst to me is how much time is dedicated to political polling. This is done to influence voters' thoughts and behaviors. The polls change constantly and manipulate minds, and that affects the outcomes of elections.
They are not usually accurate predictors, and far more importantly than whether they are accurate predictors or not: WHY is the news reporting what has not yet happened? Sports journalists don't predict who will win a game because that is determined as the game happens. Only weather and outcomes of elections are predicted and I find the latter highly suspect and I believe it subverts democracy. Kellyanne Conway is a careerlong pollster who runs a polling company, and she does it as a form of propaganda, not to accurately predict outcomes. There should be no place in journalism for fortune telling and yet it occupies a disproportionate space in cable news.
by Anonymous | reply 113 | August 22, 2022 2:17 PM |
All of these cable shows on these networks have promoted these anchors and certain reporters and contributors as celebrity-type entertainment rather than journalists who have done their research. Thus, viewers have become wrapped-up in the personalities they have been watching, and less so on substantive informational content.
While some TV news figures have journalism degrees and quality experience, a bunch of them are not highly qualified. Some don’t even have earned college degrees such as Chuck Todd and Sean Hannity. And all those hired bimbos, broadcasting based on their physical attractiveness rather than the level of knowledge and skills, hasn’t been endearing.
by Anonymous | reply 114 | August 22, 2022 2:30 PM |
R114 DL has had at least 100 threads made in the past five years dedicated to the appearances of cable and network news anchors. Appealing to the lowest common denominator is a demonstrably effective means of getting people to tune in and to do free word-of-mouth advertising.
Physics says everything is relative and entropy is universal and applies to all things. Entropy is the principle that everything degrades over space and time, or, colloquially, "everything always gets worse."
by Anonymous | reply 115 | August 22, 2022 2:38 PM |
From the moment the first pamphlet was printed news has always had a POV and an agenda that promoted one side over the other. The Chicago Tribune was the "Republican newspaper" the Sun Times not. The Detroit Free Press was the Democratic News paper (going alll the way back to the Anti-Abolitionists!) and the Detroit News was the Republican paper. The Wall Street Journal was the newspaper of Corporate American, and therefore Republican. The NYT used to be regarded as "Liberal" in the classic sense.(Not Leftist) San Francisco Chronicle was more conservative, thus Republican. We have had political parties generating their own news papers for decades in our past history. I think it might be interesting to read up on the history of news gathering in this country.

When the Reagan administration lifted the FCC requirement for balanced and/or equal time in broadcast reporting, partisan news outlets have increasingly grown. I watch a lot of BBC, PBS, and C-Span. I do watch a bit of MSNBC and CNN. In the early morning, I do turn on Morning Joe. Some days it is excellent, other days I am disappointed.
I once liked CNN for international news. But they largely moved away from that except during the wee hours with broadcasting based in London. They do cover the war in Ukraine with regularity.
by Anonymous | reply 117 | August 22, 2022 3:01 PM |
CNN is opinions about politicians and political trends. Almost nothing else. Those opinions influence viewers' opinions. That is propaganda, not reportorial journalism.
MSNBC is strongly biased opinions about politicians and political trends, and if you listen closely, you will hear many opiners reveal explicitly that they are speaking on behalf of the Democratic party.
Fox News is propaganda issued by a corporate-political conglomerate that exceeds the propagandistic agenda of MSNBC. Fox News only features prescribed, even pre-written opinions. The same is true of local news broadcasts syndicated by Sinclair Media.
Newsmax, OANN, The Blaze and the like are outgrowths of political cults, propaganda designed to radicalize viewers into advocating or taking actions to destroy their own country.
When the Reagan administration lifted the FCC requirement for balanced and/or equal time in broadcast reporting, partisan news outlets have increasingly grown.
That’s not true. First of all, the equal time rule wouldn’t have applied to CNN at the time since it was cable. It only applied to OTA because the spectrum that carried the signal was owned by the government and rented out. And, it may surprise you that it was Democrats that pushed for the rule to be repealed and Regan didn’t want to sign it.
Partisan programming was already happening. The rule had a loophole that was exploited that allowed for one sided content. While you did have to present an alternative view 1) it was only for importantcontroversial issues and 2) it didn’t have to air at the same time as the content you wanted presented. So you could air what you wanted in prime time and the present the alternative view in off hours. So it was essentially meaningless by the time Reagan did away it.

I don't think CNN going in a more middle of the road direction will work for them but lets face it they had to try something. Splitting the left with MSNBC wasn't working for them as they continuously trailed MSNBC in the ratings. I assume both Fox and MSNBC are able to charge much more for advertising than CNN is able to charge. CNN pretty much only has large viewership numbers when some disaster happens.
They have new ownership and a lot of debt and leaving things as they were in third place is just not what new ownership does.

Well, CNN is a business first and foremost. If their board doesn't think they make enough money, they can and should do whatever they want to raise the financial bottom line. CNN was not put in place to make the world a better place.
That's why it is so important that NPR/PBS gets the support they need. But obviously they are still heavily underfunded to inform and appeal to the entire nation. I was hoping for a non-profit to stem this expensive enterprise of a neutral true news channel. And I suppose, NPR/PBS are the best that can happen within this model.
The problem with NPR/PBS is that they are not universally respected. Like the NYT and WP, they are continuously discredited as left leaning. A stronger distinction between news coverage and opinion editorial may help with that. (Same for CNN).

The Solution to their ratings problem is to report the fucking news. We get editorializing and opinions by the boat load from the Left and the Extreme Right. But we really get very little real news content. That's a huge problem. It is about being truthful. It is about the facts. If 21 deaths occur in a mass shooting in Uvalde including 19 children, and the fucking police are there with their gear and their shields and their guns, and they wait 78 minutes to engage the fucking shooter who is using an assault rifle, and some of the dead children could only be recognized because of the shoes they wore, those are fact.s There is no "both sides. " And when the mass shooters constantly use the assault weapons and we're having mass shootings every week, then maybe the assault weapons are a fucking problem???

R137 here. I am fucking sick of people tip toeing around facts. Sllavery happened. It is an historical fact. The fucking former POTUS illegally took top secret documents and other documents to his private home. He took them in January , 2021. The way a former POTUS gets his documents is to work with the National Archives. Trump ignored the process and he ignored requests to return them. He was finally visited by federal investigators with a supoena, in June, and his lawyersigned to say yes this is all of them, when they KNEW this was untrue. So much so that the investigators told them to get a padlock for the storage room. Now we finally get agents with search warrants. This shit happened. It is very clear and straightforward. There is nothing confusing about it. The one thing I would be questioning as a citizen is WTF took them so long to retreive Top Secret, Classified documents? We need to be able to listen to the news and trust that we are getting an accurate, truthful rendering of the facts.

I agree about your sentiment that we have enough opinion, not enough simple communication of facts. Of course that's why people watch Fox or MSNBC and not PBS news hour. Facts are boring and opinion can be sexed up to great drama. It's not necessarily that facts aren't entirely unappreciated. They're just not offered enough anymore. And not requested anymore either. The high point of cable news was the late 1980s... CNN had a mission & methodology it carried out well, and did it profitably... just like MTV. Then, people realized that even though they were profitable & popular, they could make a bit more money & grow their viewership slightly by switching to "shows". Then, their investors demanded that the audience & revenue growth not only continue, but themselves increase each quarter, and lashed out violently at the channel's management & acted like even the tiniest missed-target (during a fucking recession, no less) was a financial apocalypse. So... we ended up with "news" channels that are little more than daily cage-fights between mercenary pit bulls in designer suits.
One thing that never ceases to amaze me is that, even NOW -- with streaming -- nobody has ever managed to re-capture & sustain the essence of early-80s MTV (showing whole videos in a coherent manner, with commercials & a few seconds of pithy commentary in between). Always, inevitably, every attempt devolves into "fewer and fewer music videos, more and more shows" within months, even though "channel scarcity" with cable-company gatekeepers is no longer a problem. They launch, mutate to run up their stock valuation, get flipped to a media conglomerate, lose their viewers (who only liked them in the first place BECAUSE they showed videos), then get shut down (because the remaining viewers are perfectly happy with the conglomerate's remaining channels).
by Anonymous | reply 148 | August 23, 2022 4:02 PM |
So does everyone accept that "news" = opining about politicians, social issues and violent events, and nothing more than that?
I'm really curious about whether this seems correct to people. I was brought up to think of journalism as something different than that and when I watch any cable news network, I always get a feeling it is a force for evil that factionalizes people and shuts off their minds rather than illuminating anyone.

Graham will go on Fox and Newsmax bashing Biden and Democrats in demeaning ways. Then on the Senate floor, he’ll be giggling, backslapping, and friendly with Democrats. He was often chummy with Kamala Harris, for example. Graham was bitter with Manchin for voting for the Biden Inflation Reduction Package. Yet, he attends Manchin’s houseboat parties. Graham is present at many socials with Democrats. Graham loves to have his name added to bi-partisan bills if such has a good chance of passing. Graham always latches onto a powerful politician for access, exposure, attention, and political gain. His fanatic allegiance to Trump is somewhat shocking given the history of the contradictions. There’s a mixture of kompromat, a schoolgirl crush, and a mechanism for power and acceptance, intertwined in that relationship.

Well, Fox opiners say whatever they are paid to say and it's clear that almost no cable news personality is above it. They live for the money and the fame.
People like Chris Wallace who actually will fight and ultimately give up a job because of personal integrity are few and far between, especially when someone is at this level.
It's not new. Decades ago, Katie Couric was caught plagiariazing a personal essay about when she got her library card. Her defense, which worked with her bosses and the public, was that it was one of her writers, not she, who was responsible for stealing *the words she read about her own alleged personal childhood experience.* Her writer was fired and no one held it against her that she was caught being a total fraud.
Kaitlan Collins came out of nowhere to become an anti-Trump White House reporter for CNN. Except she didn't come out of nowhere. She came from The Daily Caller, which is farther right and more radical than Fox News is. It was founded by Tucker Carlson. The Daily Caller's former editor was found out to have been using aliases to publish his own white supremacist and racist articles. The website publishes op-eds by other white supremacists, it denies climate change, and it's a force for evil. The old guard at CNN hired Kaitlan Collins anyway because she is pretty and can read what's written on a teleprompter.
Nothing has changed except the opinions on-air newsreader/models are being told to read.
by Anonymous | reply 176 | September 2, 2022 5:47 PM |
The CNN swing is just blatantly obvious. They aren't even being subtle about it.
The media is going to help the demise of this country right along. A sitting President gave a speech about how we are two clicks away from losing democracy and all the media can talk about is a Marine standing behind Joe and if the speech was good politics. Nothing about the substance.
Most of the reporters I see on Twitter spend a lot of their time congratulating each other on awards they don't deserve.

I was a fan of Jake Tapper during the pandemic. I find him unbearable now. He endorsed Kushner's book with reweeting one of Ivanka's tweets. That was the moment I knew he had sold out and he has no integrity. Such a fucking hypocrite. CNN ratings are currently so bad, I hope even more people boycott this right-wing trash network.
Brianna Keilar is obviously also a cunt with no integrity and will say anything to save her job. Poppy Harlow last night was also unbearable. They just fired Harwood. All of these anchors can go to hell. I'm out.
I wonder if Anderson has some integrity left and will quit his job. Interestingly, Cuomo is kinda responsible for this mess when he blackmailed Zucker and gave Discovery a chance to install Licht and change the direction of the network to right-wing trash TV.

Democrats had an online meltdown after hosts from their leftist network CNN dared question President Biden’s use of the military during his fiery primetime attack on his Republican rivals.
Hosts Brianna Keilar and Jeff Zeleny were just a few of the people upset at the commander-in-chief using Marines to back him during his speech — sparking demands for their axing and an outright boycott of the left-wing network.
“You are clearly a shill for the RNC,” one person whose Twitter bio includes a #BidenHarris2020 hashtag tweeted Zeleny just for saying that using the Marine Band was “a break with White House traditions.”
“Your sheets are showing.”
“New Day” host Keiler was first to spark the meltdown, writing, “Whatever you think of this speech the military is supposed to be apolitical.
“Positioning Marines in uniform behind President Biden for a political speech flies in the face of that. It’s wrong when Democrats do it. It’s wrong when Republicans do it.”
A minute later, the network’s chief national affairs correspondent was even more measured, stressing that “there’s nothing unusual or wrong with a president delivering a political speech — it’s inherent in the job description.”
However, Zeleny claimed, “doing it against a backdrop of two Marines standing at attention and the Marine Band is a break with White House traditions.”
Both were soon flooded by people saying they had unfollowed them as well as calls to boycott CNN over the simple statements.
“Brianna Keilar has sold her soul,” one person told their more than 90,000 followers, while others said the tweet proved she is now “straight up MAGA.”
“You know CNNs transformation into Baby Fox News is officially complete when Brianna Keilar goes MAGA,” one “vote blue” supporter said.
“Uncovering The Truth” podcaster Dash Dobrofsky also told his 109,000 followers that Keilar’s criticism proved that “CNN stands against Biden and supports Fascism.”
Others suggested that because Keilar and Zeleny had shared the same thought, it must be proof that they were under the control of right-wing forces supposedly now in charge at the network.
Former MSNBC host Keith Olberman told his 1 million followers that CNN staff “are living in dread of being Steltered” — referring to the recent axing of host Brian Stelter — “by the new right wing management.”
“Having said that,” he wrote, Keilar and Zeleny “should be fired tonight. Sorry.”
Olberman also added Poppy Harlow to the list while sharing a message condemning CNN’s “embarrassing coverage” of Biden’s speech.
Rodney Grim told his 7,000 followers that “Brianna Keilar is quiet quitting” in anger that “CNN is turning into Fox News.”
Random House vice president Benjamin Dreyer had such a meltdown, he made a glaring mistake despite being a best-selling copy-editing guru.
He accused Keilar of making an “embarrassing” mistake and “cheating” by copying Zeleny’s tweet — even though the timestamps of the messages he shared clearly showed that Keilar’s tweet was posted first.
Keilar soon addressed the backlash, tweeting, “It’s possible to agree with everything Biden said and still disagree with using Marines as backdrops for a political speech.”
Keilar soon addressed the backlash, tweeting, “It’s possible to agree with everything Biden said and still disagree with using Marines as backdrops for a political speech.”
The dumb bitch obviously never had a problem with this when Trump, GWB, Reagan or Obama did this. But for Biden to use marines as prop it was totally inappropriate. As a journalist, she should have focused on the speech and not some dumb background shit. Disgraceful. Lost all respect for this cunt.

CNN’s Poppy Harlow Pushes Biden Spox Jean-Pierre to Say Whether POTUS Will ‘Apologize’ To Republicans For ‘Semi-Fascism’ Attack
CNN anchor Poppy Harlow bluntly asked White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre “Will the President apologize?” for calling the MAGA movement “semi-fascism.”
One week ago, President Biden told the crowd at a DNC event that “what we’re seeing now is either the beginning or the death knell of an extreme MAGA philosophy. It’s not just — it’s not just Trump. It’s the –it’s the entire philosophy that underpins — it’s — I’m going say something — it’s almost like semi-fascism, the way in which it deals.”
Karine Jean-Pierre changed the subject.
HARLOW: So can I — we — I understand our viewers I think fully understand the shift that Kevin McCarthy made from what he said then to what he said later on, but I asked you about the President, and what the President will say tonight. So I’m going to take it as a no, the President will not apologize.

If any of these CNN anchors had any integrity, there would be a mass exodus. I think any person with integrity would leave, but these people make millions so who knows. It's just incredible that only a few months ago Tapper refused to interview any Republicans who supported the "Big Lie" and now he supports these lying motherfuckers and gives them a national platform. Keilar's rants were legendary and now she's just a spineless right-wing shill. How can you possibly justify this mental shift? They all seem to have a major case of cognitive dissonance or only care about $$$$.
by Anonymous | reply 207 | September 3, 2022 2:04 PM |
R207 Again, it's not a mental shift. They are given talking points and they read scripts for a living. They espouse the ideas of the corporation that employs them and they always have. They are hired because they are photogenic and can read a teleprompter without tripping over their words and they are good at looking at the right cameras and throwing to commercials or field reporters when needed. They are technicians, not thinkers.
And Jake Tapper had the nerdy-sexy newsreader look that appealed to Americans when he was hired but now he is a haggard old man, much less photogenic with fewer job prospects if he were to leave. So he's "just doing my job." If that gets people shot in the head and thrown into a shallow mass grave, hey, it pays the mortgage!
by Anonymous | reply 208 | September 3, 2022 2:09 PM |
The thing is I ha ve to watch CNN to get any actual news. MSNBC is all commentary and analysis, and Fox is a horrible joke. One thing I do notice is that if you watch CNN at different times the slant is slightly different. In general, I only watch about 5 hours of news a week, or less. And honestly no other network covers real breaking news like they do. They have done an excellent job on the war in Ukraine, and on floods, fires and mass shootings. Anytime there's a catastrophic event.

I turned on tv, but Twitter was much better because it was a WTF moment. People were reporting from the scene instead of tv news anchors bloviating about it.
Some of the people reporting from inside were MAGAs and some were citizen journalist types. Fucking MAGAs were stupidly uploading their own photos to Twitter as well as to their FB & IG accounts. DUH. It was horrifying but also hilarious.

Turn this shit off. You lonely ones got addicted to CNN in 1990s because you couldn’t stand not to hear a tv on in the background every minute you’re awake. That’s neither normal or natural.
Billionaire media owners realized you’re afraid of peace & quiet and did some market research. They found baby boomers responded to multiple headlines, split screens , chyrons running at the bottom of the screen and loud voices. In the mid 20th C, that’s how important news was announced: the network would break into programming for important events. There was urgency “NBC has this [italic] breaking news [/italic] report PRESIDENT REAGAN HAS BEEN SHOT.” (That headline would then be kept onscreen so everyone would stay tuned)
Or they would do a regularly scheduled “News moment” to encourage you to watch an upcoming broadcast. “Five people killed in a horrific car accident. Find out where at 11.”
And audiences went, “Wait…my son went out with his friends. ! What if they all got into same car and went to Burger King! OMG!”
Gen X got addicted from watching the space shuttle explode on tv screens in their classrooms. “Cool! I mean…sad! Yeah real sad. It traumatized me for life!….but it was so cool to see it happen live….but it was sad….”
You were all tuned in to 24 hours News after that [italic] just in case [/italic] something exciting happened. “Oooh, a school shooting in Colorado! It’s a siege! It’s been two hours and they’re still in there!”
A“Oooh, car chase! It’s OJ Simpson. I love it! I Now I love all car chases!”
Turn off the tv. Be alone. You can handle it. Stop lining the pockets of billionaire media people manipulating you into being a slack jawed dolt dependent on cable news for a glimmer of excitement in your lives.
Stop being addicted to the sound of anchor voices. Move on with your lives. Watch PBS News Hour and BBC America for real news. If you need to hear tv voices, keep CSPAN on your tv. But it’s best to turn it off and be alone with your thoughts for a while. You won’t die of loneliness, I swear.

Can any of you remember a time when you didn’t hear cable news as an incessant background noise? If you can remember, did you go through withdrawal? We’re you jittery? Nauseous? Cramps?
You’ll get through it. Just tell yourself “This is best for me. My brain is filled with garbage already, I don’t need more of it. I need to cleanse myself of cynical bastards who deliver opinion as news and are trying to make people like me angry and frustrated. They are fucking toxic and nefarious and I’m going to be strong and not succumb to their blandishments. ‘Oh you can tune in now and again. We won’t hurt you! by Anonymous | reply 308 | September 10, 2022 11:56 AM |
R307 Because Cooper is still more reporter than commentator. A lot of people really do want reportorial news and not histrionic personal opinions.
I admire Rachel Maddow's analytic and rhetorical prowess, but she has been foolish and borderline hysterical a few times. Most notably, and when she really lost me, was when MSNBC announced that she had Trump's tax returns. Then her show came on and she blabbered for 40 minutes and then finally brought on her guest, who gave a disclaimer that the returns were a decade old or older, and that he only had a few pages, and they basically revealed nothing.
It was such a huge letdown and it was dramatized misleading entertainment, not reporting and not even news.
And she's one of the anchors who is an actual intellectual and not just a spokesmodel who reads a teleprompter.
CNN's anchors are mostly spokesmodels. Cooper has demonstrated that he does his best to present himself more as a journalist than as an opiner. He has cracked a few times, like when he talked about Trump peeing on his desk, but that was newsworthy because Cooper doesn't usually go there. If his ratings are the highest, the network should look at why that is and realize that viewers don't want more extremism and screaming; they want less, and they want a network they feel they can trust, not a hub of cult indoctrination.
by Anonymous | reply 309 | September 10, 2022 12:37 PM |
the returns were a decade old or older, and that he only had a few pages, and they basically revealed nothing. It was such a huge letdown and it was dramatized misleading entertainment, not reporting and not even news.

by Anonymous | reply 314 | September 10, 2022 12:55 PM |
R310 Doubtful that that is true, or it depends on what you consider damning.
The NYT got its hands on actual tax filings from someone close to Trump and they revealed that Trump paid no income taxes for many years and paid literally hundreds when he did pay.
They revealed that his allegef net worth does not comport at all with his actual net worth—or, far more importantly, if he is as rich as he says he is, then he shelters his money somewhere and does not declare it in federal filings.
They revealed that he is not a sound businessperson and made the worst possible investment decisions and bled his companies to near bankruptcy, and his fortune was saved by NBC and The Apprentice. And even then, he took his enormous profits and made poor business decisions to invest in more golf resorts even when his resorts and casinos kept bleeding money.
All of this is relevant to him being president—a president who cheats on his taxes, who defrauds banks, who pays little or no taxes while poor people pay more than they can afford, who doesn't have nearly as much money as he claims to have or else is hiding his money illegally somewhere. And most importantly, he was elected by many who believed him to be a business mogul and his tax filings reveal he is a terrible businessperson and suggest he'd make terrible economic decisions for the country.

There was actual news happening when the laptop was found to contain evidence of the Vice President peddling his influence to China and the Ukraine to enrich his son and under the table himself as well.
Even more news happening when the flagship media coordinated with the White House and government officials to lie to the public pretending it was Russian disinformation.
And news was happening when a year later they finally whispered the matter was real and not foreign meddling.
And I expect quite a bit of news left to happen unless they manage to again sweep the dirt under the rug. I think we can be confident the CNN of six months ago would never have allowed Erin Burnette to run this story.

New Day hosts Brianna Keilar and John Berman will be moved to different roles once the new show debuts later this year.

Alisyn Camerota, co-anchor of “CNN Newsroom” in the afternoons, and Laura Coates, senior legal analyst, will anchor from 10 p.m. to midnight through the midterm elections.
John Berman and Brianna Keilar will each fill in for Tapper in the 4 p.m. hour. Wolf Blitzer will then pick up an extra hour, anchoring from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

by Anonymous | reply 349 | September 22, 2022 6:23 PM |
Seems to me there's plenty to cut yet. Ana Cabrera at 1 - 2, whoever does 11 - 12, Wolf serves no purpose. They could convert him to a talking head if he refuses to go. Let's not kid ourselves, the only people who are safe are black, because of the prevailing mood. I liked Victor Blackwell on the weekends - he had good chemistry with whoever he was paired with. Less so with Alyson Camerota, who I loved with Berman in the morning. He's quite good on his own. Great voice. I agree with the theory they're just letting Don's contract run out. There's no way CNN is taking morning's seriously. Can't be done.
by Anonymous | reply 350 | September 22, 2022 7:01 PM |
I would be pissed if my boss suddenly changed my work schedule and life. Lemon now has to get up in the middle of the night and Camerota lost her day job and has to stay up late. Ugh, I need my structure and sleep.
I'm surprised Licht doesn't try to copy The Five. The Five is currently Fox News' most watched program and people seem to enjoy that format. He also didn't bring in any new anchors. So far it's just a big reshuffle.
by Anonymous | reply 351 | September 22, 2022 8:30 PM |
Oh, CNN is taking mornings seriously.
Licht has said a show like Morning Joe has the power to set the day’s political agenda. He really wants that to work. His strength has been in setting up multi-talent vehicles.
That’s why it’s hard for me to understand why he attached Lemon, who doesn’t have the chops in the view of much of the industry.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) holds a 7-point lead in his reelection bid over Democratic challenger Stacey Abrams in the latest Fox News poll.
Fifty percent of Georgia voters back Kemp compared to 43 percent for Abrams, the survey shows. That’s a significant gain from a July Fox News poll, when Kemp was only up 47 percent to 44 percent.

The business logic is pretty simple. With Fox News abandoning Trump, his supporters are abandoning Fox. OAN and the like can't generate revenue. This puts a bit under half of the US in search of a news outlet. So CNN makes the business decision to capture a portion of those who dropped Fox by presenting more right wing views. Et voila.

Because once the Neo fascists take over, and believe me this is not speculation, they will "reshape" all our sources of information, and all those san ctimonious reporters who are too busy protecting their paychecks, will discover they are serving the ends of a fascist state. From Adweek "Q3 2022 Ratings: Fox News Marks 83 Consecutive Quarters at Top of Primetime Cable News Heap" - "How do those figures fare relative to the previous quarter’s and the year-ago quarter’s? Well, Fox shed -3% in total primetime viewers and -15% among primetime adults 25-54, -3% in total day viewers and -12% among total day adults 25-54 relative to the prior quarter (Q2 2022). The results were more mixed when compared to the most-recent third quarter (Q3 2021). The network gained +4% in total day viewers, but shed -11% in the total day demo, -22% in the primetime demo and -8% in total primetime viewers from the year-ago quarter."
From MSN "Fox News Notches 20 Straight Years as Top-Rated Cable News Network" - "Fox News, like its competitors, was down year over year in total-day demo averages, primetime total viewership and primetime demo averages, although its losses were less than CNN's and MSNBC's. In total-day demo ratings, Fox News was down 7% compared to January of last year, CNN was down 81% and MSNBC was down 75%. In primetime total viewership, Fox News was down 12%, CNN was down 77% and MSNBC was down 56%. Finally, in primetime demo viewership, Fox News was down 20%, CNN was down 82% and MSNBC was down 73%."
If CNN plays their cards right, you'll see their viewership go up as it attracts some of the conservative viewers that abandoned Fox News. Time will tell.

They took him off the air, and said he had some personal issue to take care of ever since he took a very bad fall while in Amsterdam on his way home from covering Ukriane a few months ago. Now as I read between the lines, it seems to me he got drunk and fell and hurt himself? Who ever made the announcement was shitty to give us just enough information to conclude that. Let's see. Who are the big names? You have Anderson. Then everyone else. Do I think they will fire Anderson? No. But I think Anderson may leave them. He is not depending on CNN to keep him in the public eye. He has 60 Minutes, and other options, and he seems to love his podcasting. I think he wants to spend more time being a father. But if Anderson leaves CNN CNn will be in trouble because Anderson will leave a huge hole.

Laura Coates was very cute last night in her effusive admiration for Angela Lansbury. She revealed that she’s actually named after the film Laura and not after Lara from Dr. Zhivago, heh heh. And she cleverly asserted how both Gaslight and The Manchurian Candidate are relevant in today’s politics.

The new bosses’ idea for Jake Tapper’s new 9pm show is interesting. He’s dressed casually (no tie) standing next to a screen that displays a slide show to accompany his monologue about politics. Later he’ll interview that grifter person Anna Sorokin (he interviewed Biden last night.) Has a late-night talkshow vibe.
We’ll see how long it lasts, I guess. It is different.

by Anonymous | reply 499 | October 15, 2022 1:12 PM |
From CNN Business: “When Chris admitted to us that he had offered advice to his brother’s staff, he broke our rules and we acknowledged that publicly,” the network said in a statement. “But we also appreciated the unique position he was in and understood his need to put family first and job second. However,” the network said, “these documents point to a greater level of involvement in his brother’s efforts than we previously knew. As a result, we have suspended Chris indefinitely, pending further evaluation.”
So the guy's conduct caused him reputational damage. Journalism is a business that is supposed to rely in part on ethics and standards. So why would ABC or anybody with some vestige of respectability want the guy back? Hopefully the whole world isn't ruled by the I like him/he's hot standard.

r501 that clip is old and not really memorable considering the protest, Covid and Trump hell the US was experiencing during summer 2020. by Anonymous | reply 504 | October 15, 2022 3:34 PM |
R503 Neither the age nor the impact of the clip is relevant. It's the bankruptcy of the agenda-driven reportage. Which is indicative of all media. The belief that MSNBC is not the identical "infotainment, biased" reportage. Or that the absence of "ratings" somehow ensures "nonbiased" or "ethical" reportage.

At a certain point, decimating the people their audience is tuning in to see in favor of the opposite political party is going to hurt them. But if there’s a MAGAt running it now, will they care? Fox has kept commentators who lost every sponsor and kept running them at a loss, just to continue to broadcast their political view. I’m pretty sure foreign (Russian) investors paid for that, because who can afford to run a program at a loss? They were getting paid somehow. But hopefully Putin does have the money to finance two American networks any more. All they’re going to do is destroy CNN, not turn it into MAGAt 2.0, which might be the point anyway

This is kind of meaningless. Fox News viewers are overwhelmingly old people, and many of those viewers leave their TVs on nonstop. This is reflected in the advertising you see on Fox - they don't generally get big wealthy advertisers. CNN does better with the target ad audience (ages 18-54 or whatever). It's kind of similar to the way the National Enquirer used to boast about their circulation being much higher than the major newspapers, but no one cared because the National Enquirer audience was full of dumb and/or poor people.

They just clicked. I used to anchor a thousand years ago in a medium market - nothing special. My sports guy and I didn't actually like each other much at all, but we were awesome on the air. We clicked. Took the viewership up about ten per cent over a couple of years. Off screen, we struggled to be polite. There was some strange vibe between us that it felt to me we were about ten seconds and strength of will away from slugging each other. Maybe we both wanted to fuck. Looks like Tapper is ratings poison in the 9PM primetime slot and dragging the other hosts down with him. Only 523k people watched his show on Thursday. Even the morning and afternoon shows all had better ratings. I'm one of the people who started boycotting his show ever since he promoted Jared Kushners book on Twitter and started this both sides nonsense and invited MAGA Republicans on his show. Looks like most people don't appreciate this new version and his right-wing talking points and viewers are abandoning his show in droves.
Interestingly, Cuomo is already NewsNations highest rated program with 123k viewers. A couple more weeks and Tapper and Cuomo probably have the same number of viewers.

"Last year, Cuomo Prime Time was regularly the network’s highest-rated hour, and drew an average audience in February 2021 of 466,000 viewers, making it the fourth most-watched show in cable news among viewers 25-54, behind MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show, FNC’s Tucker Carlson Tonight and CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360."

by Anonymous | reply 547 | October 22, 2022 1:30 PM |
"Jake Tapper, who is now hosting the 9 p.m. hour on CNN, saw a drop off in viewers from Anderson Cooper’s 8 p.m. show on Monday night. While Cooper drew 794,000 total viewers and 155,000 viewers in the advertiser-coveted 25-54 age demographic, Tapper saw 571,000 total viewers and 113,000 demo viewers at 9 p.m."
By my math, 571,000 is still more than 466,000 even if the pecs aren't as ripped.
by Anonymous | reply 548 | October 22, 2022 1:31 PM |
^You're comparing total viewers with the 25-54 demo.
Cuomo had 466k viewers in the 25-54 demo. Which is quite a lot. Tapper only has 571k total viewers and only 113k in the same demo. His numbers are really bad and he's losing more and more viewers every day.
by Anonymous | reply 549 | October 22, 2022 1:37 PM |
You're right Cuomo pulled numbers closer to 750-850K generally, so I don't know why Forbes reported that.
But it's unrealistic to say he'll be equalling CNN in weeks. He debuted at 147,000 figures and the most recent figure is 123,000. So losing 44,000 viewers isn't exactly #1 with a bullet and an interesting basis to predict Cuomo will have his revenge. Looks more like CNN will have the last laugh, even in its anaemic state.
by Anonymous | reply 550 | October 22, 2022 1:45 PM |
^I think Cuomo lost viewers bc there's some trouble with Verizon and they (temporarily) dropped NewsNation from their lineup. I just read that on Twitter last week and I'm not sure if the situation is already resolved, but it could explain why Cuomo lost viewers.
by Anonymous | reply 551 | October 22, 2022 1:55 PM |
I also think Cuomo's ratings were higher than 850k. I think he regularly had around 1.5 million total viewers and also did well in the 25-54 demo. CNN's ratings significantly dropped after the 2020 election though. The permanent chaos during the Trump administration was obviously very good for CNN's ratings and business.

He's still a blowhard. He and Tapper are just two extremes... one's prim and sour, the other's a bombastic egotist. They need to let Michael Smerconish take the nine hour and reboot the Larry King format, with unrushed, intelligent interviews of leading figures of the day. I am increasingly liking the idea behind the ten o-clock hour. It's kind of thoughtful discussion (compared to the eye-rolling Don Lemon floundering about trying to act his way through the hour.)
Aren't you tired of the endless political jousting? I'm as bored of balance opinion all the time as I am of partisan opinion all the time. If CNN wants substance, it should be redesigning part of the line up to steal the best of PBS, not cable news. (And more podcasts of Anderson Cooper's personal journey to self-discovery isn't the answer either.)
CNN has a lot of work to do but they're a long way from understanding how much.

You know, some people are anchor material and some aren't. Some are absolutely brilliant as correspondents. Kaitlin has grown a lot. She has a ways to go, but she is a journalist. A Correspondent. She is not anchor material.

Hiring somebody to talk about guns who actually knows something about guns. Intolerable.
He's still a blowhard. He and Tapper are just two extremes... one's prim and sour, the other's a bombastic egotist. They need to let Michael Smerconish take the nine hour and reboot the Larry King format,
Fuck no! That half assed Republican turned "independent" with his "both sides" bull shit is the last thing we need.
He cant even handle his own critics and feels obligated to read them on the air and popos their argument with his own silly simplistic response.

Lol r68, then you watched yesterday Smerconish show as well?
His both sides-ing was off the charts yesterday.

Jake Tapper was never anchor material.
by Anonymous | reply 570 | October 23, 2022 11:52 AM |
I wasn't pushing that idea as a political reboot but a return to the classic Larry King format... people from all walks of life. Smerconish strikes me as a pretty low key interviewer, without being boring.
The one thing that surprises me out of all this ratings chatter is that Cooper's numbers seem to be the strongest for the whole hot mess of CNN.

I’m boycotting CNN completely, although I used to have them on in the background all day. Hopefully they will eventually get rid of the Liz Truss of network news and I can watch it in peace again.

I have come to the conclusion the only thing worth watching on CNN is Stanley Tucci in Italy, and the specials they do like the one on Rupert Murdoch.

Ratings don’t matter anymore. It’s all about profitability.
So let’s say CNN can make $100 in profit by being number 1. But they can make $300 in profit by being number 3, then they don’t care about the ratings.
Lowering quality and reach might not be good for ratings, but who cares because it makes more money.
by Anonymous | reply 582 | October 24, 2022 6:02 AM |
It’s less expensive. So they are not paying for depth and breath of coverage. Just a tiny corner where they can frame everything in the studio and force a narrative that is manageable and cheap.
The whole model has changed.

That show is excellent. Geared to adults. The show is gentle and sweet. It meanders along. No politics. No agenda.

Wolf should never have been an anchor. Neither should Brit Hume. Both should have been content with being Senior White House Correspondents. Kaitlyn Collins joins that list.
by Anonymous | reply 588 | October 25, 2022 3:34 AM |
Kaitlin Collins has one of the most annoying voices and delivery styles of anyone on TV in my memory. Erin Burnett is another one. I cannot stand to listen to either one.

R184 - Yes! Perfect assessment. Of course they're reporting exactly what the big boss is telling them to report. But when that paid reporter agrees with our own opinion, now the reporter is reporting with integrity., he's an independent reporter. He's brave etc. OMG give me a break.

I also agree. It's not filled with anger, lies, hate, that all the politics seem to thrive on. It's a nice break from the news or social issued of the week turned into weekend 2 hour specials.
by Anonymous | reply 591 | October 25, 2022 11:03 AM |
The Murdoch documentary is excellent. Would be great if CNN does more documentaries, we don't really need extra hours rehashing the News Event of the Day like they do on MSNBC.
by Anonymous | reply 592 | October 25, 2022 5:25 PM |
Even though we have this 24/7 news cycle the American public and voters in particular are less informed today than they were 50 years ago. It's all hype qwithout context. It's all about profits.

When I lived in Europe I thought CNN International was excellent with news coverage only rather than pundits spinning. Was it the advent of Fox News that turned CNN into a spinmeister's haven? MSNBC already does that for the left so it seems superfluous. I would appreciate a news channel like the BBC that does only news, not spin. Currently CNN covers very few news stories. There is the News Story of the Day - like on MSNBC - where each anchor/pundit tries to spin it while totally ignoring everything else going on in the world. International coverage is non-existent now unless the US or Israel are directly involved. The rest of the world can just drop dead.

They create, nurture and feed conflict for profit. If there wasn’t 24/7 Shitker saga coverage, he’d a goner. Literally. He thrives with all the media attention because it makes his puny, ED, mushroom nub feel big.
by Anonymous | reply 596 | October 25, 2022 8:48 PM |
CNN International is much better than the U.S. version. But in general, the way our media covers politics is really inadequate at best. I'm not watching political coverage anymore. I watch returns on election night. I will watch an important DoJ announcement or something the POTUS says. But as far as the way they interpret predict and analyze is is a joke. No one does disasters like CNN. Earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, terrorist attacks, wars, etc. Excellent.
by Anonymous | reply 597 | October 26, 2022 3:22 AM |
I started watching CNN way back during 9/11. At the time they were always the first to get video of things on the air and their reporting was very straightforward. But thanks to FOX and all their one sided shit CNN eventually had to compete for all the rubes that wanted that. So now it's shit just shy of Fox. I think it's odd Repugs call in liberal, it's not. There's more Repugs on CNN than I can count.
CNN International is much better than the U.S. version.
Nah, CNN International is bad. They have a slate of extremely annoying hosts like Richard Quest, Amanpour or Chatterly. They also have extremely boring scheduled programs like "Inside Africa" or "World Sports" (basically just soccer) that run for hours while you're desperately waiting for current US news.
