Can anyone please explain why this shit is so common in L.A.? It's absolutely everywhere, regardless of whether or not it matches the house's style of architecture. It's the new 'basic bitch' of landscape design. I'm beginning to roll my eyes every time I see it and I'm getting concerned my retinas may detach.
Going viral: Concrete squares with grass in-between.

Aren't those basically just...spatially aligned and organized weeds??

This looks like artificial lawn grass in between.
Make sense to do this to give the run off rain water back to the ground, to the trees and the surrounding vegetation. If done correctly, it can be a really nice landscaping element too. You just picked an ugly example OP.

OP seems like a reasonable alternative to grass lawns which would require more water. Do people in CA even have real grass anymore?

Semipermeable patio is a wise idea.

It's not a big mystery. It's the LEAST expensive way to replace a sizeable grassy area & cut down on one's water bills. But not the most environmentally friendly solution, so it doesn't qualify for LADWP's rebate program.

Not a new concept, growing up in the olden days driveways with center grass were de rigueur

I think moss growing between bricks or pavers look nice. Sometime small weeds grow and can be attractive, if you keep it under control. I like the look.
