I don’t know why she wasn’t more popular. She had so many great songs but it seems like on mainstream (white) radio stations, only a couple of her songs were played regularly. She never got the heavy mainstream airplay that Whitney got. She had so many good ones. Never Miss The Water is one of my favorites.
Chaka Khan is really underrated

Chaka. Chaka, Chaka Khan?

Ain’t Nobody.
Nothing better out there.
Yes, it’s technically with Rufus, but still.

Through the Fire is my favorite

Because she wasn't groomed by Clive Davis to appeal to the masses like Whitney, she made some great records late in her career. I never bought any of Whitney

OP, I feel for you.
I think I love you.

Didn't I Feel for You get as much airplay as anything Whitney did?
Tell Me Something Good was a big hit too.

Chaka Khan is very popular and highly-regarded but she is not a mainstream pop singer.

Also, Chaka was at odds with her longtime record label, Warner Bros. By the time she extricated herself from the label she had aged-out of pop superstardom..
One shady thing WB did to her -- she recorded the original version of "Addicted To Love" with Robert Palmer as a duet. WB heard it and stripped her vocals from the record. It went on to be a No. 1 hit for Palmer.

I first heard her in the early 70's when she and Rufus were playing for tips in the college towns outside of Chicago. It was evident then that she had "it". I never understood why she didn't become a bigger star.

My “getting ready” song in the 80s.

Forgot to post. This was my “getting ready” song in the 80s. It’s so much fun.

I remember reading a review about Chaka v. Tina Turner, who was having a resurgence, that Tina has legs, but Chaka has the pipes.

That's so very creative. Isn't it creative, Richard?

A friend went to a Chaka Khan concert and said that people walked out, mid-concert. It was that bad. I've read other reviews about how crappy she is, live. Maybe that's part of the reason. Unprofessional.

She's a hopelessly booze bag. She can't make it thru a gig to save her Dollar General weave.

She sounds not great at R17 and doing that trick of "letting" the audience sing for her (pointing her microphone into the audience).
I've seen Dionne do this. However, I think Dionne does a better job of compensating for her limited voice. (Still has good timing and stage persona.)

r19 No but people expecting to her to sound the same as she did in the 70s is insanity. . .
she could go the other route and just lipsync.. but she's a much bigger, older, woman now with health issues, doing cameos and working fairs, so she's not as likely to be able to put on the kind of show that might justify that.
Apparently, she has some bills to pay, so can't retire gracefully.
What exactly do you want from her?
Not everyone is willing to feed on the souls of children, like ms warwick would happily do.

I've always liked her version of this Billie Holiday song.

Chaka has good nights and bad nights. I've seen her live maybe 15 or 16 times since 1982 (my first ever concert). She is a very erratic performer. Her performance and control of her instrument depends on her mood and her degree of sobriety. I last saw her in 2018 and she sounded as good as I ever heard her. God willing, I will see her again in October.

She was on heroin for a very long time. I remember watching Sue Simmons interviewing her on live at 5 in the mid 1980s and Chaka was visibly high as a kite.

I love her layered vocals in this electro cover of Gary Wright's song.

her voice isn't pleasant
she's a screeching mess
her ass is big and so is her attitude
any other questions?

Chaka Khan had big natural hair before weaves were invented.
