At first I thought he was meant to be retarded, but as the movie unfolded, I began to realize thet it was an acting choice to play ethnic. As the horror was growing, I didn't know if you should laugh or cry. I've never seen anything nearly as racist in my entire life. I'm still shocked the day after. Imagine a combination of Faye in MD and Mickey Rooney in BAT's, sprinkle a little bit of Dusty in Rain Man, and you're not even close yet. It's GOT to be the single worst performance ever in movie history. How did it pass mustard ? (As per DL vernacular). You can litterally feel the embarrassment of the cast. On the bonus side, openly gay relationship between Pissaro and his twinky eye candy Leonard Whiting, and the ever gorgeously handsome Michael Craig in an unfortunate hairdo.
Did any of you SJWs see Christopher Plummer in THE ROYAL HUNT OF THE SUN ? Because you don't know "offensive " until you have

Watched the first 20 minutes of R4's clip -- it looks pretty good to me. Thanks.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | August 16, 2022 4:32 PM |
I watched this about a month ago. Plummer in his fake tan was definitely unintentionally funny. I enjoyed the other native eye candy though. I just watched 1492 and was nearly drooling over the natives, even with their nose rings. Both films stretch the truth a lot, but are gorgeous to look at. They are examples of the old joke about natives seeing the Europeans and screaming, "Uh oh. There goes the neighborhood", used in a song from the musical "I Had a Ball".
by Anonymous | reply 10 | August 16, 2022 4:39 PM |
Yes…and he was a god! Terrible acting but lots and lots of wonderful eye candy. Any movie that had a half naked Plummer and Leonard Whiting in his prime is worth the watch.

Pauline Kael on Christopher Plummer in this movie: "As this may be the most outrageous, outlandish, and absurd performance that any major actor has given since John Barrymore swung on a trapeze with Mary Beth Hughes, it almost makes the movie worth seeing."

Plummer played Pizzaro on Broadway. Curious as to why he changed roles. He just came off far too Anglo to be remotely believable as Incan. I guess Yul Brynner wasn't available. He usually got those kind of roles.

I think not. Katharine Hepburn was completely believable as a china-woman, clear eyes and all.

It's 1969. Hardly the dark ages of cinema and culture but its still over a half century ago.
It's so easy and quite STUPID to retroactively apply outrage to the productions of a different time. Doing so, is very low handing fruit.
It's a marginal forgotten film so who the fuck cares enough to be offended by this? OP does.
Why?

“The Royal Hunt of the Sun” by Peter Shaffer was the first Broadway show I saw, in November of 1965. Directed by John Dexter, it starred Plummer as Pizzaro and a muscular, feline David Carradine as Atahualpa. It originated at London’s National Theatre in 1964.
As a theater epic, it was necessarily stylized, with several choreographed sequences, such as the Spaniards climbing the Andes, or a mimed slaughter of Incas at the end of Act I, culminating in the spreading of a red blotched cloth over the raked stage. There was much use of masks and subtle lighting. Performances and production got great reviews.
I loved every minute, and still regard it as one of my favorite theater experiences, ever.
Consequently, I was eager to see the movie version. But, I found much of the film less than enthralling. Taking a realistic approach, it showed that slaughter scene as a bloody mess. Gone was the magic I saw on the stage, replaced by crowd scenes and massive sets, set against literal crags. The story of the culture clash still worked, but its appeal seemed overwhelmed by details.
Robert Shaw was an admirable Pizarro, though he lacked the world weariness of Plummer’s stage character. But Plummer as Atahualpa just seemed like a travesty. Gone was the veiled power of Carradine’s performance, replaced by Plummer’s mincing stereotype. He’s so outlandish that he ruins the film. What were they thinking?
The play didn’t run as long as it could have, its momentum stalled by a back injury Plummer suffered onstage, but it did have a touring company. Shaffer went on to create several hits, such as “Black Comedy,” “Equus,” and Amadeus.” “Royal Hunt” has been done in regional theaters, but has never been revived in New York.
Too bad the film version is the only video available. I’d love a copy of that magical theater production.

[R70]: I was 16, visiting with family in New York during Thanksgiving holiday from prep school in New England. (The other show we saw that weekend was the 8th performance of the original cast of “Man of La Mancha” at the Anta Washington Square Theatre, where the NYU Law School now stands.)
[R71]: Thank you.
[R73]: I wrote “subtle lighting” to refer to a tremulous moment near the end of the play. Because Atahualpa considers himself a god, he says he cannot die, but will rise with the rising of his father the Sun. Despite Pizarro’s attempts to protect him, he nevertheless hopes Atahualpa is God. So Atahualpa is garotted, and his body collapses. Gradually, his dark-robed followers creep out around him, in a low chant, each wearing wide Inca masks. As one, they turn, their metal faces glinting faintly in dim light. With no sign of the rising sun, they turn back. They turn toward us again, the light stronger on their blank, metal faces. Finally, a bright shaft illuminates Atahualpa, lifeless. They slink away. Pizarro howls, his hope to know God destroyed.
