Wendy has been a working actor for decades. She suffered through David Spade, and now suffers through Young Sheldon.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | August 15, 2022 4:41 AM |
She's the female tv equivalent of Eve Arden and Thelma Ritter -- you see her in a program and you know you're going to enjoy her whenever she's on screen. Fred Willard used to be the male equivalent until he died.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | August 15, 2022 4:43 AM |
I love her, too! Don't forget she was the Delicate Genius, too.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | August 15, 2022 4:44 AM |
She's tall and gorgeous and thin. She's perfect!
by Anonymous | reply 4 | August 15, 2022 4:44 AM |
also "Hot in Cleveland"
by Anonymous | reply 5 | August 15, 2022 4:44 AM |
They should put her and Jennifer Coolidge together in something. They'd be funny as hell.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | August 15, 2022 4:45 AM |
I know not this "The Owl House" of which you speak, but I loved Wendie in Just Shoot Me. She was easily the best thing about that show.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | August 15, 2022 4:52 AM |
What about me R8?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | August 15, 2022 4:55 AM |
I love her, too. She's always good, even in less-than-stellar material
by Anonymous | reply 11 | August 15, 2022 4:59 AM |
Oh my god, I love “Just Shoot Me.”
“The Owl House” is a gay-positive Disney show in which Wendie plays a (reluctant?) role model. She and the show are both wonderful.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | August 15, 2022 4:59 AM |
She was also Katy Mixon's mom on "American Housewife" and true to form played an ex flight attendant that knew where to find the boys and the booze!
by Anonymous | reply 13 | August 15, 2022 5:04 AM |
She's a voice actress too, her voice is so distinctive. She voiced that evil blonde Barbie parody on the Bratz cartoon.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | August 15, 2022 5:06 AM |
God she was freaking funny in Just Shoot Me. I remember some episode where she flashes her chest to a window washer outside her building and he falls from the shock or whatever. When she visits him in the hospital she reveals her chest again, only to send him into a coma; her reaction and facial expressions were out-of-this-world hilarious. Now that I think of it, I think she is probably one of my favorite comedic actresses ever.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | August 15, 2022 5:06 AM |
Nina Van Horn was the best character ever written R15.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | August 15, 2022 5:07 AM |
Delightful on “Hot in Cleveland”!
by Anonymous | reply 17 | August 15, 2022 5:08 AM |
I first loved her as Charles's second wife in Kate & Allie. She drove poor Allie mad!
by Anonymous | reply 18 | August 15, 2022 5:08 AM |
“Just Shoot Me” is on Hulu! What a wonderful blast from the 1990s past.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | August 15, 2022 5:11 AM |
I've met her and she's quite delightful and cheeky in person.
However, I really didn't like her "Ronnie" character in FRASIER. I never bought that someone so saucy would be interested in crusty ancient gimp Martin Frasier, and it also felt like a retread of the Marsha Mason character from years earlier.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | August 15, 2022 5:13 AM |
She and Christine Baransky age well and are always working. Work seems minimal, although being a former model helps.
I remember her as Camille Barbone in that TV movie of Madonna’s rise to fame.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | August 15, 2022 5:15 AM |
I'm assuming she really was a runway model. She's about 6 feet tall and weighs 120 or so. Remember the JSM when David Spade saw someone she was trying to avoid and said, "quick! hide behind this pencil!"
by Anonymous | reply 22 | August 15, 2022 5:16 AM |
I love both Wendie and David Spade. JSM makes me happy. Wendie so butch, David so bitchy. 90s ambiguity at its best.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | August 15, 2022 5:24 AM |
Huge animal lover, good friends with Ray Abruzzo who also has a ranch with horses.
And a very funny lady. One of the few that might have been able to pull off an American Patsy Stone.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | August 15, 2022 5:35 AM |
I first noticed her in Kate & Allie and then HBO's Dream On. Been a fan for years. I agree with you, r20, that her character on Frasier wasn't great but the show was way past its prime by the time she joined the cast. She did the best she could with what they gave her.
I also have her version of Santa Baby on some Christmas compilation CD. As a singer she's a great actress but I've never really liked that song and her version is probably the one I'd choose to listen to if I have to hear it.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | August 15, 2022 5:36 AM |
Just love her.
One of her odder projects that should be better known to the DL: the 1999 TV movie, TAKE MY ADVICE: THE ANN AND ABBY STORY. Malick played dueling advice columnists "Ann Landers" and "Dear Abbey" who were actually twin sisters, Eppie Lederer and Pauline Phillips.
Hijinks ensue!
by Anonymous | reply 26 | August 15, 2022 5:45 AM |
Sweet Jesus, r26! That’s a great find!
by Anonymous | reply 27 | August 15, 2022 5:47 AM |
Ray Abruzzo is a hot piece.
Were he and Wendie an item?
by Anonymous | reply 28 | August 15, 2022 5:49 AM |
I felt bad for her when she was doing that really bad show on TVLand with Betty white, but her career seems to have recovered.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | August 15, 2022 5:55 AM |
Wendie and George Segal were so damn funny on Just Shoot me. I liked Laura San Giacomo too.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | August 15, 2022 6:00 AM |
TAKE MY ADVICE is on Amazon. I really should watch it again, 23 years later.
I was pretty drunk (and stoned) when I saw it the first time. I remember being impressed by Wendie's wig game, and her ability to differentiate Ann from Abby in their numerous scenes together. Patti Duke would have been envious.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | August 15, 2022 6:01 AM |
Just Shoot Me had a good long run--seven seasons, 1997-2003. Damn, was it really that long ago?!
by Anonymous | reply 32 | August 15, 2022 6:02 AM |
The nineties were a magic time in network TV!
Arguably, actors and writers were much better off back then financially. There weren't as many different projects as there are nowadays with streaming, but once you landed a job, you were paid better.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | August 15, 2022 6:09 AM |
The Nina Van Horn biography is my favourite JSM episode ever!
by Anonymous | reply 34 | August 15, 2022 6:15 AM |
Just Shoot Me and Newsradio were the best!
by Anonymous | reply 35 | August 15, 2022 6:15 AM |
I liked the entire main cast of Just Shoot Me. Even Spade and Enrico Colantoni.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | August 15, 2022 6:19 AM |
I never warmed up to Colantoni.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | August 15, 2022 6:21 AM |
R22, Wendie was signed with Wilhelmina in New York, and Glamour in Paris.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | August 15, 2022 6:26 AM |
[quote]Ray Abruzzo is a hot piece. Were he and Wendie an item?
I suspect Ray may be a hiding-in-plain-sight gay. He's tight with Wendie and Emma Samms, but seems to have no public relationship history of his own. He's also a fierce liberal on his Twitter account and loathes Trump. Good guy whatever the situation is.

The clip at 5:34 with TV news reporter Victoria never fails to crack me up!
by Anonymous | reply 42 | August 15, 2022 1:13 PM |
For some reason, my post at R41 didn’t include my comment, so I’ll try again — the clip at 5:34 with news reporter Victoria Chase never fails to make me smile!

[quote]Just Shoot Me and Newsradio were the best!
I was just going to post the same thing.
Loved both series, and always thought a crossover episode would have been TV perfection.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | August 15, 2022 1:18 PM |
She's funny and foxy and harms nobody. I dig her.
She always stands out. One is drawn to her in whatever role she plays.
Tall dark and lean thing she is with good movement. Was she a dancer? Or, maybe she's one for yoga? I dunno but she carries herself sexily.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | August 15, 2022 1:21 PM |
Wendie's voice over work is pretty epic (BoJack Horseman and The Owl House make her a geek / queer icon).
I remember a TV film (Lifetime?) where she plays a bored, little housewife thrust into a murder mystery which was fairly lame, but made fantastic because of her falling over a dead guy in her, I believe, kitchen. Best scene ever.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | August 15, 2022 1:22 PM |
A beautiful woman with a great comedic ability. Great combo and not common.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | August 15, 2022 1:34 PM |
I might have to try and find to see if I can watch Just Shoot Me anywhere. It is kind of like Wings in where it had a long run and could be pretty funny, but always overshadowed in the media by other shows. Generally, I am not a huge David Spade fan, but he was used well on that show.
I always enjoyed her rivalry with "Susan Lucci" on Hot in Cleveland and Lucci herself seemed pretty game to make fun of herself and they played off of each other well.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | August 15, 2022 1:36 PM |
....a "natural" comedic ability. That sounds better.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | August 15, 2022 1:36 PM |
She sort of reminds me of Signourney Weaver facially and in statue.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | August 15, 2022 1:49 PM |

Don't worry, you didn't post at R41; I did. We posted at approximately the same time ( great minds, you know), so there was nothing wrong with your post.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | August 15, 2022 1:51 PM |
R37, I agree. I didn't realize that he's not actually a good actor until watching "Veronica Mars" a few years ago. He seems like he's never fully in character but always a little awkward and self-conscious. It worked for him in "Galaxy Quest," but that's about it.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | August 15, 2022 3:16 PM |
Love her! She's Arab American isn't she?
by Anonymous | reply 53 | August 15, 2022 3:36 PM |
Kristen Johnston is in the same category but, you know..
by Anonymous | reply 54 | August 15, 2022 3:46 PM |
My husband worked with her on a show and they became friends at the time. Over 20 years ago and he still says she’s the kindest funniest person he’s worked with in the industry.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | August 15, 2022 3:49 PM |
R44 I like to think in an alternate universe Nina and Bill dated. Bill loved name dropping and being pretentious so I bet he would have been in the Nina Van Horn THS. Catherine on NR was also gorgeous and could have been a former model. Maybe she and Nina hung out and did blow at Studio 54 one night and hooked up with a Rolling Stone.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | August 15, 2022 4:21 PM |
Wendie/Wendy is a very nice name. One you don't hear of much anymore.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | August 15, 2022 4:25 PM |
I forgot how funny JSM was. Maybe I'll rewatch it. She popped up in some obscure gay film as the sister of a wealthy, long time single gay man in middle age who finally admits his same sex attraction. It wasn't great but it also wasn't bad.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | August 15, 2022 5:40 PM |
Wendy Malick and Jennifer Coolidge ARE Patsy and Edina ! (American version.)
by Anonymous | reply 59 | August 15, 2022 5:52 PM |
She did her best work, imho, in a show called Dream On. I’ve seen her in guest parts since then. I would have imagined bigger things for this saturnine faced actress.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | August 15, 2022 6:07 PM |
She was brilliant in Dynasty the Reunion mini series in 1991. Especially her scenes with Alexis.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | August 15, 2022 6:12 PM |
Wendie Malick has delighted audiences for decades playing the exact same character in everything in which she has appeared. And I applaud her for it.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | August 15, 2022 6:13 PM |
While my first experience of her was also as Judith, the main character’s ex wife and obsession, on Dream On, I’ve enjoyed her more in other roles. Just Shoot Me, Seinfeld, Frazier, Young Sheldon. Very beautiful and very funny. Her last name is Egyptian, like Rami’s.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | August 15, 2022 6:31 PM |
JSM is supposedly on Hulu
by Anonymous | reply 64 | August 15, 2022 7:33 PM |
Ray Abruzzo was in Transparent as the boyfriend of Maura's friend Davina (Alexandra Billings).
by Anonymous | reply 65 | August 15, 2022 7:40 PM |
Hot in Cleveland was only intermittently as good as the actresses who appeared in it, but I did love Wendie's character and her feud with Sue Lucci.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | August 15, 2022 7:42 PM |
R53 her paternal grandfather was an Egyptian Coptic Christian, so calling her “Arab-American” seems like a bit of a stretch.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | August 15, 2022 7:44 PM |
Yes JSM is on Hulu, it came on right at the tail end of the lockdown so I watched it right away but I think I may again.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | August 15, 2022 8:22 PM |
Oh and Newsradio is on youtube. I have the box set but have never watched an episode after Bill's death and still can't.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | August 15, 2022 8:25 PM |
What's her exercise regimen?
by Anonymous | reply 70 | August 15, 2022 8:27 PM |
Wendie and Eartha Kitt had great chemistry in The Emperor's New Groove. David Spade is also in the lead as the narcissist emperor Kuzco. And Patrick Warburton as Kronk is hilarious.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | August 15, 2022 10:21 PM |
R71 That is David Spade’s best role.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | August 16, 2022 12:30 AM |
With a name like that and those handsome dark looks, you’d think she would be a lesbian like Danny Thomas.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | August 16, 2022 6:36 AM |
Let us never forget her star-making turn as Gayle Buchannon, ex-wife of Mitch, and mother of Hobie, on Season 1 of Baywatch.

Whatever happened to Brian Benben from "Dream On"? He was really cute, rather funny, and had a cute butt (and went naked fairly often on that show)
by Anonymous | reply 76 | August 16, 2022 3:51 PM |
He's married to Madeline Stowe R76, and has been for about 40 years. I loved him too, and his secretary Toby.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | August 16, 2022 3:54 PM |
Their names just seem to go together...Brian Benben and Madeline Stowe!
by Anonymous | reply 78 | August 16, 2022 3:57 PM |
Oh, the secretary was Denny Dillon. She was very funny indeed.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | August 16, 2022 4:12 PM |
Does she claim her Arab Heritage?
by Anonymous | reply 80 | August 16, 2022 4:51 PM |
Copts aren’t Arabs, they were in Egypt long before the Muslim conquest.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | August 16, 2022 5:15 PM |
Sure they are Arabs. They just don't happen to be Muslims. Arab is an ethnicity. Muslim is a religious term.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | August 16, 2022 6:12 PM |
Regardless I think being 1/8 Copt Arab isn't enough for someone to claim that identity. At that point they'd just be culturally American and nobody looks at Wendie and thinks Middle Eastern.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | August 16, 2022 7:06 PM |
I could see her in Cleo garb.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | August 16, 2022 7:10 PM |

R76, his last acting credit was Imposters. I agree with your sentiments about Benben and would add that he has a sexy voice.

Wendie Malick and Jami Gertz both kind of got shit on professionally in the sense that they should have been much bigger.
I would like to see a show starring them.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | August 16, 2022 7:57 PM |
Jamie Gertz was in a sitcom called Still Standing which I thought was pretty funny. Sorta like a more nicer Married with Children. Of course Jamie was a MILF married to a fat fucker.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | August 16, 2022 8:01 PM |
Not just any fat fuck, but the dude who played the lead in Full Monty level of fat fuck.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | August 16, 2022 8:59 PM |
R82 there were no Arabs in Egypt until the Muslim conquest. How can Copts be Arabs when they predate their presence, speak a different language and have different customs? Do you think the pharaohs were Arab, too?
by Anonymous | reply 91 | August 17, 2022 2:54 PM |
Nina Van Horn : Greta, if you had something on the side of your mouth, would you want me to tell you? Greta Larson : Of course. Nina Van Horn : Okay. You're hugely fat.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | August 17, 2022 3:02 PM |
R91 Yes. True Arabs are from the Gulf peninsula. They are from countries like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE, Oman and Bahrain.
But indigenous Egyptians are Semitic people closely related to Arabs, Assyrians, Jews and Phoenicians who make up the Arab peninsula and Levant region. Egyptians aren't related to Maghrebis of North Africa like Moroccans, Algerians, Libyans and Tunisians.
