That's one of my favorite episodes. I thought Lucy rocked it quite well.

What I love about those burlap dresses is that the cut of them really was the very latest Paris look.

by Anonymousreply 5August 14, 2022 11:46 PM

Cher's mom was in that scene...

^ That's NOT Cher's mom, that's Cher. She also appeared on the Texaco Star Theater in 1948.

Burlap is such an itchy fabric.

Homespun fabric is preferable. It has the look of burlap but is softer. My sister used to make chic fashions from homespun. She was beatnik adjacent.

I believe this episode was shot in 1956, and the powers that be must've seen a preview of Givenchy or Balenciaga's fall-winter line because those designer houses unleashed the sack dress upon the world in 1957.

The sack dress was such a radical departure from Dior's New Look silhouette that many were outraged and decried the loss of femininity. As if a cinched waist and full skirt measured a woman's "womanhood." In this episode of ILL, it is pretty much ridiculed as an expensive French folly.

I don't know...in OPs photo it looks like Lucy is sporting a VERY full diaper. Not my favorite look.

I fondly recall my mother and her friends dolled up in the fashions of the 50s-70s. Tight girdles, hose, perfume, sculptured hairdos, high heels, lipstick, and politely restrained behavior. Ever so often while alone mom would cut lose with a loud "shit" when something went wrong, or a delightful girdle-propelled fart.

Marilyn did it much better.

Since most women were pregnant with Boomers throughout the 50s I would think a dress like these would be welcome

by Anonymousreply 15August 15, 2022 5:24 PM

Isn't it obvious, r3?

Huge dykes.

by Anonymousreply 16August 15, 2022 5:31 PM

^ Nah, Lucy liked young Cuban pinga too much

by Anonymousreply 17August 15, 2022 6:00 PM

r17 Is that so wrong?

by Anonymousreply 18August 15, 2022 6:14 PM

^ No, little Marco, Lucy just liked pinga she could see, that's all
