I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)

I watched this movie for the first time last night. what fun!

A typical classic 1990's teen slasher film.

Directed by Jim Gillespie

Written by Kevin Williamson (Scream)

Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ryan Phillippe, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prince Jr., Muse Watson, Brigette Wilson, Johnny Galecki, and Anne Heche.

I've watched it several times, albeit in fast forward just to get to the Ryan Phillippe skin scenes.

by Anonymousreply 1August 13, 2022 5:18 PM

R1 He's hot but Freddie Prince Jr. is hotter

by Anonymousreply 2August 13, 2022 5:28 PM

R2 A pot for every lid!

You battle Buffy for Freddie and I will get down on my knees and beg almost-50 Ryan to pummel me and fill me with his nectar.

by Anonymousreply 5August 13, 2022 8:19 PM

Phillippe then, Prinz now :)

by Anonymousreply 6August 13, 2022 8:47 PM

R6 No I still think Prinze was better

by Anonymousreply 7August 13, 2022 10:28 PM

I always liked Bridgette Wilson. Her casting in this makes no sense (Why cast her as a character that I believe was overweight in the novel? That takes away the reason she'd be jealous of SMG.) but she seemed capable of more than she was ever given the opportunity to show. Loved her in Shopgirl as Claire Danes' scheming, slutty co-worker.

Anne really is great in her cameo.

by Anonymousreply 8August 13, 2022 10:43 PM

Freddie was cute and sweet looking. Ryan was dumb and horny looking.

by Anonymousreply 9August 14, 2022 12:46 AM

Anne was great as Billy's creepy sister. And Bridgette is good at playing bitchy. I always forget Johnny Galecki's in this.

Yes she acted only with her sweater and what was in it, but she was so pretty and adorable and sexy in that irresistible Bambi way😍would kiss her til she forgot all about death and her dumb boyfriend!

The problem with this movie is the supporting characters are much better than the lead. When Sarah Michelle Gellar is killed, the spark of the movie dies with her.

Plus Sarah’s chase/death is much more edge of your seat than Jennifer’s boat fight.

I used to love this movie when I was 12 and 13 YO.

by Anonymousreply 16August 14, 2022 1:10 PM

[R14] Agreed. Helen - Sarah Michelle Gellar' character - was gutsy, wily and inventive in her chase scene, the opposite of the usual slasher film blond bimbo. You sensed she was doomed, but you were really rooting for her. Plus she got the best line: "He's got my crown!".

by Anonymousreply 17August 14, 2022 1:11 PM

I don't understand why people enjoy slasher movies...here are pretty young people who are unlikable, except one, who isn't totally unlikable but is pretty naive yet savvy...here they are having sex...imagine how they feel now, like trapped rodents with no escape being hunted down slowly and then frenetically slashed into ribbons one by one...the good one escapes! Well, until the sequel.

by Anonymousreply 18August 14, 2022 1:15 PM

This era of horror movies is really nostalgic for me as they hit around my teen years and we would watch as many of them as we could. So on rewatching them I can still enjoy them for that, but I have also noticed how unpleasantly cynical all the characters are at this time. It's just a bit much for me now, whereas I remember at the time that was part of what we all loved about them. I guess we thought that was "real", haha.

And my gosh we dressed badly in the 90s/early 00s! I remember trying to wear as baggy clothes as possible, haha! I never had frosted tips at least, hee!

by Anonymousreply 19August 14, 2022 1:32 PM

Ryan was peak hot in 1997. It should be preserved for that reason alone.

by Anonymousreply 20August 14, 2022 1:33 PM

[Quote] And my gosh we dressed badly in the 90s/early 00s!

Which is why I don't understand why they brought all of the terrible 90s/00s fashion back. Everyone looks like crap now.

by Anonymousreply 21August 14, 2022 1:56 PM

The best character in the movie was Helen's sister Elsa planned by Bridgette Wilson. She had all the great one-liners.

by Anonymousreply 22August 14, 2022 1:57 PM

You and your hair. It is so pathetic.

by Anonymousreply 23August 14, 2022 2:12 PM

Don't ruin the joy of the movie by following up with the atrocious series of the same name, OP. Hours of your life you'll never get back.

by Anonymousreply 24August 14, 2022 2:41 PM

Agreed about the series, it was disappointing. Hard to keep the characters and their connections clear, weird editing, and ultimately didn't payoff.

At least the movie had young Ryan, and you could imagine gently kneading his balls while simultaneously milking his firm shaft to induce a fountain of warm seed.

by Anonymousreply 25August 14, 2022 2:47 PM

FPJ always seemed too nice. Like he would be vanilla in bed. Ryan looks like he would grab your cock under the table at Thanksgiving while he tells your mama how good the mashed potatoes are.

by Anonymousreply 26August 14, 2022 2:51 PM

R26 Spoiler: That's his character in Gosford Park. Brilliantly cast because he plays an ambitious young actor who isn't a good actor and who trades his body for a career.

by Anonymousreply 27August 14, 2022 2:54 PM

by Anonymousreply 28August 14, 2022 2:59 PM

[quote] Her casting in this makes no sense (Why cast her as a character that I believe was overweight in the novel

It makes total sense. The movie is VERY different from the novel.

by Anonymousreply 29August 14, 2022 3:05 PM

No nudity

by Anonymousreply 30August 14, 2022 3:12 PM

I always thought the killer "butchering" Helen's hair was a favor to her.

by Anonymousreply 31August 14, 2022 3:17 PM

He should have given her a perm

by Anonymousreply 32August 14, 2022 3:19 PM

I loved the setting for the movie. I'd love to visit Southport some time.

by Anonymousreply 34August 14, 2022 4:11 PM

I never get tired of Ryan's dick pics. He was even generous enough to throw in a vid of him jerking off. Ryan has a bigger dick than I thought he would. Nice big set of balls, too.

by Anonymousreply 35August 14, 2022 4:11 PM

Hottest cast !!

by Anonymousreply 36August 14, 2022 4:25 PM

Jennifer Love Hewitt at her hottest

by Anonymousreply 37August 14, 2022 4:26 PM

Jennifer Love Hewitt was so rat-faced, yet marketed as some kind of sex symbol because she had big tits, like that Sweeney chick that's being shoved into our faces now. Truly beautiful women with big tits have always been around...

by Anonymousreply 41August 14, 2022 4:56 PM

I love horror movies and I'm waiting "patiently" for another chase sequence on the level of Helen and the fisherman.

by Anonymousreply 47August 14, 2022 10:40 PM

R47 💯👍

by Anonymousreply 48August 14, 2022 11:51 PM

It's funny how SMG hasn't really found another good show to star in but David's been on several since Angel ended.

by Anonymousreply 49August 15, 2022 1:16 AM

Sarah Michelle Gellar carried this movie. Helen was the best character.

by Anonymousreply 50August 15, 2022 2:50 AM

R42 Agreed!

by Anonymousreply 51August 15, 2022 1:54 PM

There’s conflicting accounts of SMG’s professionalism. She’s always been said to be an old pro who comes to work ready and doesn’t waste peoples time. There are some who have been rubbed the wrong way by it though and it’s been said there was an element of bitchiness to it was unacceptable.

I think that’s why she didn’t work as much as she probably should’ve after Buffy ended.

by Anonymousreply 52August 15, 2022 3:07 PM

R52 Acting is a profession. The only thing Joan and Bette respected about each other was their preparedness and professionalism.

by Anonymousreply 53August 15, 2022 6:42 PM

R52 I have heard that before. I think SMG will only take certain roles because of her kids too. I didn't mind Ringer or The Crazy Ones. They are both better than this new werewolf show she's doing now.

by Anonymousreply 54August 16, 2022 5:16 AM

Other than the addictive nature of being famous, I think being an actor for the camera could be an extremely tedious and boring job for a lot of people, and I think if I grew up working as a child in that job and had many millions in the bank, I'd want to pull a Gellar and just live my life.

I am a very patient person overall but I find repetition to be really tedious to the point of becoming very frustrated from it. If my job were to sit in a trailer for sox hours waiting for someone to come get me and then recite the same page and a half of dialogue to a camera 25 times while some man in a chair yelled at me about what I was doing wrong, I'd definitely opt out after I had accumulated a few mil. Aside from the money and the ego boost of being recognized, it seems like a god-awful job to me.

by Anonymousreply 55August 16, 2022 11:13 AM

R8, I always liked Bridgette Wilson as well, and always enjoyed seeing her pop up in movies. She is absolutely gorgeous, one of the most beautiful women I'd ever seen, and I was all about Ryan and Freddie at the time. But wow, Bridgette was beautiful starting with her debut as Arnold's daughter in Last Action Hero. To be honest, I always thought she wasn't convincing as Elsa since she is much prettier than her sister. I also liked her in The Wedding Planner, and it was refreshing that they didn't write her character to be a heartless conniving bitch who comes between J-Lo and Matty McC just because the plot demanded it, and instead she was a woman who realized that marriage just was not for her at that point in time.

Agree with others who say Sarah Michelle's chase scene was more memorable than Jennifer Love's, excepting that minor misstep of having Helen stop, turn around and stare at the alley behind her, mere feet from help. Although I do like the overhead shot of Helen being butchered by the fisherman on the right edge of the frame while the marching band plays on the left edge.

As for Freddie vs. Ryan, I love them both, but I think Freddie has aged better, and I wish Ryan didn't have so much ink covering his beautiful body. But oh well, c'est la vie.

I also loved John Debney's creepy score for this movie, starting with "A Young Man on the Edge." This was the same year he composed the score for The Relic, another amazing horror movie score.

[Quote] while some man in a chair yelled at me about what I was doing wrong,

And that man would be Joss Whedon.

[Quote] But wow, Bridgette was beautiful starting with her debut as Arnold's daughter in Last Action Hero.

Oh wow i didn't realize that was her first role. I really liked Bridgette in Mortal Kombat as well.

[Quote] As for Freddie vs. Ryan, I love them both, but I think Freddie has aged better, and I wish Ryan didn't have so much ink covering his beautiful body. But oh well, c'est la vie.

Well Freddie isn't an abusive piece of shit who fucked one of his daughter's friends.

by Anonymousreply 58August 16, 2022 12:51 PM

Ryan Phillippe wasn't abusive, his ex-gf was a crazy bitch who broke into his house and he threw her out.

by Anonymousreply 59August 16, 2022 2:43 PM

Very attractive cast. Ryan was mainly hot in the 90s and his career peaked then too, the nudes and JO video are the only interesting that whore has done in the past 20 years. J-Love was cute with big boobs, straight men like that, she's a shitty actress. I don't think SMG really enjoys acting. Freddie was cute but never handsome or hot to me. He's content being a himbo househusband nowadays.

by Anonymousreply 60August 16, 2022 11:43 PM

What’s sad about this movie is The sequence of Sarah Michelle’s chase/death is the best part of the movie and she is the lead of the sequence and you realize how much better a movie it would have been had Helen been the main character instead of Mopey Julie. But then she dies and it’s all for naught

by Anonymousreply 61August 17, 2022 12:02 AM

R61 I agree. SMG excels so well in horror. She could easily do an American Horror Story or Twin Peaks type show if she wanted to.

by Anonymousreply 64August 17, 2022 8:21 AM

Ebert gave it one star and ended his review with:

[quote]After the screening was over and the lights went up, I observed a couple of my colleagues in deep and earnest conversation, trying to resolve twists in the plot. They were applying more thought to the movie than the makers did. A critic's mind is a terrible thing to waste.

by Anonymousreply 65August 17, 2022 10:11 AM

I always loved this film and the sequel, but has anyone seen the 'third' sequel in the trilogy, I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer? It's soooooooo bad. None of the original characters and it's more like a shitty reboot.

by Anonymousreply 66August 17, 2022 11:04 AM

Next Spring, I'll Know What You Did Last Summer Because I'll Find Out What You Did Two Winters Ago That Led to What You Did And Soon Will Lead to What You Still Have Yet to Do

by Anonymousreply 67August 17, 2022 11:08 AM

Lois Duncan, who wrote the novel, was pissed that they turned it into a full on slasher film. Especially considering her daughter was murdered in real life.

by Anonymousreply 68August 17, 2022 12:03 PM

Anne knew too that's why she was murdered.

by Anonymousreply 69August 17, 2022 12:12 PM

Also from Ebert's review:

[quote]As they panic and try to find out who sent it--who knows what they did--the movie loses what marginal tension it has developed, and unwinds in a tedious series of obligatory scenes in which nonessential characters are murdered with a bloody hook wielded by the Fisherman, a macabre figure in a long slicker and a rubber rain hat.

[quote]“This is a fishing village,” one of the friends says. “Everybody has a slicker.” Yes, but not everybody wears it ashore, along with the hat, during steamy July weather. Only the Fisherman does.

LOL

by Anonymousreply 70August 17, 2022 12:14 PM

Also from Ebert's review:

[quote] For her part, Gellar shows the same spunk she brings to her starmaking role as Buffy Summers, the teen vampire hunter with the heart of a sometimes-bitchy cheerleader who only wants to save the world without ruining everyone's prom. Her boyfriend-in-reality Freddie Prinze, Jr., offspring of Freddie Prinze, is just adorable enough to sell tickets and justify taking up screen time before being inevitably gutted like a rainbow trout in a mountain fishery. The film's greatest tension is meted out in steady 20-minute increments that show ever more of supple young Philippe's skin. The pretty pouty visage with the golden mop of hair yields to perky, taut pecs, abs that have been crunched into a tight set of segments that recall the leanest of insects, and finally, two buttocks that are tanned and squarish enough to be mistaken for pull-apart Hawaiian rolls, and probably just as sweet. We wonder as we watch: How far will this go before his young flesh is split by the ghastly hook? Will he be surprised in the shower, in a typically artless throwback to the scene that made Janet Leigh famous, and show just a glimpse of *it* before he pays the proce for trusting the Gorton's fisherman? Alas, it at the current rate of societal degradation, these sorts of movies will not feature a lot of cock at least until the 2020s. Instead, the twink is killed off in an anticlimactic scene that fills the screen with fake blood, leaving Love as the sole survivor. A poetic ending for a slasher that exists to get teens' blood flowing. If only Love weren't such a bore. No wonder people resort to killing. One thumb down. (The other is reserved for Ryan P.'s butthole.)

by Anonymousreply 71August 17, 2022 12:32 PM

R66 I don't mind the sequel either. But I haven't seen the third movie. Doesn't it involve ghosts?

by Anonymousreply 72August 17, 2022 12:42 PM

Ah, the sequel.

"God, you SICK FREAK!".

by Anonymousreply 73August 17, 2022 12:48 PM

The director of this, Jim Gillespie, never really had a career after this, anyone know why? I always thought this movie was well directed and stylishly shot.

by Anonymousreply 74August 17, 2022 12:53 PM

I Have No Idea. What DID You Do Last Summer? Was It Naughty?

by Anonymousreply 75August 17, 2022 1:07 PM

Here's how Ebert ended his review of I Still Know What You Did Last Summer:

[quote]Now that we've analyzed the tawdry tricks the movie uses to pound the audience like a Playskool workbench, is there anything else to be said about "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer"? Not really. It contains no characters of any interest, no dialogue worth hearing, no originality of conception, no ambition other than to pocket the dollars of anyone unlucky enough to go to a movie named "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer." When a movie begins, I imagine an empty room in my mind that is about to be filled. This movie left the room furnished only with dust and a few dead flies.

by Anonymousreply 76August 17, 2022 1:55 PM

Now I'm watching I Still Know ...

It's kind of hilarious in its own way. Like a proto Scary Movie

by Anonymousreply 77August 17, 2022 2:57 PM

The sequel isn't as good, but it's dumb fun.

I tried to watch the 3rd one. I made it about 20 minutes.

A movie about a killer fisherman...and they moved the setting to Colorado.

by Anonymousreply 80August 17, 2022 4:16 PM

by Anonymousreply 81August 17, 2022 5:59 PM

How can you not love Brandy and her epic microbraids and fierce attitude in I still Know.

by Anonymousreply 82August 17, 2022 6:01 PM

I remember I was having a sleepover with my cousin when I Still Know hit Pay Per View. We stayed up and watched it 4 or 5 times.

by Anonymousreply 83August 17, 2022 6:18 PM

I had to give up on the third one.

I have better ways to waste my time!

by Anonymousreply 84August 17, 2022 6:20 PM

R10, that is not a cameo, that is a supporting role.

But yeah, I think that was one of Anne Heche’s best performances.

by Anonymousreply 85August 17, 2022 8:59 PM

Hot take: Urban Legend is a more vibrantly directed movie than IKWYDLS. The performers in Urban Legend also seem to be having more fun, especially Rebecca Gayheart. The references to other horror films, particularly through the casting of Robert Englund and Danielle Harris, are more interesting than the ones in IKWYDLS, too.

Yes, the chase scene with SMG is better than the one with Tara Reid in UL, but the latter is still a decently done scene.
