Songs that blew you away when you first heard them Part 2
by Anonymous | reply 559 | June 23, 2023 8:50 AM |
It's SO long since I've been blown away by a song I can't even remember.
I hears an old Jimi Hendrix song called How Would You Feel and I guess I was blown away, but didn't realise what it was about (racism). Now I do know I feel less blown away.

In college, everyone was obsessed with Elliott Smith. I liked him. But didn't really "get it" until I heard his song The Biggest Lie. I thought it was a near perfect song - the lyrics, the melody. the gentle/haunting voice, the guitar work - and then became an Elliott acolyte.

Oh god, where to start..
I was about 5 or 6 years old when my brother was gifted a VHS collection of Queen's greatest hits. This was in 1992, I think. Freddie passed away a year before that.
My brother immediately wanted to watch the video clips, all the other gifts (it was Saint Nicolas' Eve) be damned.
The tune, the blasting drums and guitars, the melodic climax, the voice, the hair, the leotard..!! MARY!
I was instantly hooked. It just blew my gayling brain.

My 2nd entry: Many years later, somewhere in my early twenties, I was last to stay in a gay bar, having developed a bit of a fling with the barkeeper. It was an autumn night, raining in Amsterdam.
Played on the bar's fantastic sound installation came Ella Fitzgerald, singing Angel Eyes. We smoked a cigarette, just listening to that godly voice of hers...

When I was 10, a song came on the radio that very quickly became my absolute favorite song for years.

Hey Jupiter and Me and a Gun by Tori Amos.
You Oughta Know by Alanis.
My Heart Will Go On.
Hello by Adele, sort of.
Just Dance by Gaga.
A Case of You (Joni Mitchell) and Famous Blue Raincoat (Leonard Cohen), but I heard both first as covers by Tori. I love Joni's version of her song and I don't love Leonard's version of his.
I obviously have a bias toward female vocalists.

This is embarrassing. This is also Datalounge so it’s ok.
When I was 10, I remember my parents having the radio on outside on the the patio. The windows were open and I was in our dining room looking at our angel fish aquarium. This song came on and I froze in place and almost cried…because I thought the song was so incredible. It is not incredible at all. It is terrible. Ah, youth.
Chris Cornell’s version of Ave Maria (off some 1990’s Christmas album) is incredible.

Before the movie parts, the red carpet appearances, and the high-profile relationship with Tessa Thompson, Janelle Monáe released this single. I heard it on the mega influential LA public radio station KCRW. It blew my mind. I love her voice, and the big, brassy orchestration. I couldn't find an official video, so this will have to do.

I loved this song so much in the mid 80s that I ran out & bought it (a rare act for me).
The fact that the band hated this successful album (for them anyway) as "corporate rock"
disappointed me a great deal as no other album of theirs sounded like this one.

I love the potential of these threads, but they're always ruined by one or two assholes who post endless bullshit. But I'll contribute.
I was four years old when this song was released, and it blew me away. I was obsessed. My mother was on an afternoon duckpin bowling league for a bit, and would give me and my (older) sister money to spend in the arcade. I didn't play the video games. I spent it on the jukebox. "Material Girl" was always on my list, as well as Twisted Sister's "We're Not Gonna Take It", of all things.
I was never going to be anything but gay, gay, gay. And knowing how things turned out, this memory always makes me smile.

If song's are on the same album, just post the album. Or post the song on the album that is your favorite with an honorable mention to the entire album.
It's that simple.
by Anonymous | reply 160 | September 5, 2022 10:15 PM |
No it's not as simple as you described R160. Not all albums are able to posted in their entirety.
The album at R154 for example might not have been popular enough for someone to upload as an entire album or the label/artist might've had it taken down (MCA, Prince, etc.) & what if someone wasn't a fan of all of the songs anyway?
The OP asked for "blew you away" songs - not entire "blew you away" albums to search through (this thread isn't about giving out a pretend Grammy for best album).
Honorable mention? Are you stuck in school somewhere?
If you don't like a certain genre on a music thread just ignore them all (R123 R124) like a mature adult would.
It's that simple.
by Anonymous | reply 161 | September 6, 2022 7:38 AM |
For me, vocals are really what sets off the "mind-blowing" experience. No doubt that there are some rather beautifully composed and/or written songs but my choices would be Mariah Carey's records mainly for the vocal showdown.
Vision of Love
Emotions (the whistles; first time I heard it, I couldn't believe human voice could go that high like a freakin bird)
We Belong Together (the final chorus in an octave higher scale is pure Mariah goodness)
Stay the Night (the final "and you keep on sayin" part)
Anytime You Need a Friend (the final chorus is so soulful and ends the song beautifully)
by Anonymous | reply 162 | September 6, 2022 8:21 AM |
R161 Dude, is that what you got from our posts? It has NOTHING to do with the genres of music.
I read DL on my mobile most of the time and the scrolling process is already a pain in the ass. It doesn't help that you have to scroll by 8 songs from the same record. Why not just post the best one and give the album a little review? Why post downloads of ALL of the songs?
Either you're being argumentative or you're the one doing it. BTW, the poster's ONLY doing it to get this reaction--and OF COURSE, I'm giving it to him. Yay me. I don't think that's too much ask

by Anonymous | reply 183 | September 12, 2022 1:34 AM |
R183. I enjoyed...
1 = the atmosphere of all 6 (I think this is lacking in most post 1990 songs except for a few artists like Adele)
2 = the voices/vocal arrangements (reminded me some of Annie Lennox's solo work)
3= how they brought all of the different instruments together. Not all artists in the new century can do that last part.
I usually avoid non-English albums but I enjoyed that one so I might try to listen to more in the future when I come across them. Not all of the songs above "blew my mind" but the OP on the 1st thread also said "hit you like a freight train" which most of these did. Most tunes that I've heard in the past decade don't move me in any way.

R216 Sociopathic? LOL. I have a short term memory now so my posting several songs off of an album in a row helps me cross the album off in my mind (& move on to another) but if you want me to hopscotch & post a song again in a day or two over & over until the thread runs out that can be a possibility too.
Also grow up & quit complaining how it's so hard to scroll thru songs on your phone. Get something else that will make it easier instead of whining about it on thread after thread. I doubt anyone on the DL helped you pick out your dumb choice of a phone.

I love Vera Lynn, R234. The maternal side of my family is British; they came to the USA after the war was over. I heard all the war stories growing up. I later learned it was too painful for my grandmother to listen to "the White Cliffs of Dover" for the rest of her life. My grandfather died in the conflict.
So, it resonates with me every time I hear it.

Olivia's "Grace and Gratitude" album blew me away the first time I heard it - I played it repeatedly the first night I bought it. It was originally an 'exclusive' at Walgreen's in October, 2007, where she teamed up with them to promote 'breast cancer awareness' . The CD was at the cash registers, selling for $5 (since her passing, I've seen this OOP CD listed for over $100 now on different sites). The next day, I went back and bought all they had - kept some extra copies for myself and gave the rest out to friends and family for Christmas gifts - everyone loved it, couldn't believe it was ONJ. I can not believe this album was not recognized by the Grammys. (It peaked at #2 on Billboard's New Age Album Charts).
In 2010, she re-released the album in Amazon under another record label as 'Grace and Gratitude - Renewed', with some extra songs and some 'tweaking' to the original recordings - it's OK, but this original is better.

Probably one of the best recordings by Streisand in her entire recording career. This should have been the lead track on the album "Back to Broadway" in 1993 (instead of the awful 'Some Enchanted Evening') and the single off the album in America (where no single was released at all). The rest of the album is a mixed bag, not nearly as strong as 1985's "The Broadway Album".

I went to a Chris Isaak concert in Orlando circa 1991(?) and it was 85% women and 15 % gay men. I was with 2 girlfriends, and both of them said their panties were soaking wet after the concert. During the concert you could feel the sexual tension in the venue. He was at the peak of his beauty then.He also had a magnetism that you had to experience live. He had that entire audience eating out of his hands. It was a great evening. He could have gotten laid 500 times that night.from both men and women !

The Summoning by Sleep Token. Such a great band with a diverse catalog. Blue-eyed soul meets metal.

Whipping Post - the Allman Brothers, that intro in 11/8 hooks me every time and the chord progression near the end still gets me.

I like that, r375. When I heard "the Future Starts Slow" by the Kills on a TV show, I had to find out who that was.

It was a steamy night memorial Day weekend in Orlando Florida in 1980. I went to the Parliament House with some friends to go dancing. I was a Twinkie back then 20 years old close to my physical peak . This song came on and as soon as the introductory base beats hit people crowded the dance floor, I was a naive child not familiar with the artist at that time. Laugh if you must but those lyrics and that melody gave all of us a sense of pride and empowerment at that time. I never felt such a sense of belonging and camaraderie before or since as I did being on that dance floor surrounded by hot sweaty men. Thank You Ms Ross!!!!
