He may have been right.
Original Professor, John Gabriel, from the Gilligan’s Island pilot speculates that he was fired for being too sexy.

Original calypso theme song - composed by John Williams!
The appearance of John Gabriel is limited to mere seconds, so as to avoid sexual overload in the opening credits.

Russell Johnson was a DILF. Though I didn't care for his blow dried bouffant in later episodes.

If anyone was deemed too sexy it would’ve been Skipper! Woof!
by Anonymous | reply 10 | August 9, 2022 11:31 PM |
Russell Johnson was way hotter than that guy. Gabriel looks like sexual predator more than a sex animal.
And I'll always love Johnson for the support he gave his gay son David as he battled publicly against AIDS, and then continued his late son's charity work for the cause. This was WAY before it was fashionable.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | August 9, 2022 11:35 PM |
Gabriel also played Mary's beau, Andy Rivers on multiple episodes of the Mary Tyler Moore Show. I remember him when I was a little kid and my mom would watch Ryan's Hope. I think he put Delia in her place, or something...

Russell Johnson was perfect as the professor. I thought he was nerd/daddy hot on GI and if you dig around he was hot in many old b&w t.v. shows.
Also, Tina Louise may have been a cunt but as Ginger she was perfection. They were all great doing a really dumb show and making it work.
We're still talking about it.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | August 9, 2022 11:43 PM |
Denny Miller, who also brought excessive sex to the show and had to be limited to two episodes (the lost-at-sea surfer boy and Tongo, the ape man who turned out to be a method actor) was married in real life to Kit Smythe, the original Ginger at r9.
The video’s title and thumbnail are deceiving on that count.

R22, is that a still from Gabriel's audition to play Beuregard in Mame? I always felt that the fundamental problem with the film version of Mame was Robert Preston. If Lucy had someone she could play off of and had more sexual tension with, it would have gone a long way to putting the film over as the box office sensation it should have been.

by Anonymous | reply 59 | August 10, 2022 4:16 PM |
Looke at the men on Gilligan's Island. John Gabriel sticks out as too masculine. He look like a man who has sex. You don't look at Skipper or Gilligan and think of them as sexual beings. Mr. Howell is safely married -and if you think of him in terms of sex at all, it's the comfortably-married-and-do-it-on-birthdays-and-special-occasions type. It's not the Russell Johnson wasn't a handsome, sexy man -but he didn't project himself as a sexual being. Clearly Sherwood Schwartz thought Gabriel could be the Professor -but the network types wanted someone who was less of a sexual threat to the two women. Remember, this was a time when belly buttons had to be kept covered. No hint of sex on the island!
by Anonymous | reply 60 | August 10, 2022 4:42 PM |

I mean, come on.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | August 10, 2022 4:47 PM |
r19 for the old f/hags, he's more representative of leading male love interests from that era.
O.G's would have been better set for the mid to late 90s in his youth to 30s.
while post forty, he was everything the 80s was made of.
J.G. would be considered "attractive" by today's standard but back then, he was basic bitch.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | August 10, 2022 5:09 PM |
Don't confuse "sexy" with "sexual," R61. Mary Ann, beautiful and sexy as she was, exuded a fresh-scrubbed, wholesome quality. She wasn't a sex pot. And Ginger? She was a siren; a vamp. She constantly tried to use her feminine charms to get what she wanted from the men, but she never gave them what they (presumably) wanted. The censors of the day didn't want audiences to think there was hanky-panky on the island. Ginger clearly wasn't going to do anything with the men - Howell was married and older; the skipper was older and fat; Gilligan was to all intents a little boy, an innocent. That left the professor. He was emasculated with his intellect. (Again, that was easier to imagine with Johnson than with Gabriel.)
Today, of course, audiences would presume a ton of sex on that island. If Ginger was saying "no" to the men, she would be hitting on Mary Ann instead. And who knows how the men would take care of business? Maybe Gilligan would be a pass-around bottom... But not back then. In the 60s we had married couples sleeping in separate beds.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | August 10, 2022 5:11 PM |
Married people had to sleep in separate beds if they didn't want more children. Birth control was a sin. Especially among the Irish who would happily have 14 children rather than offend Our Lord.

I had a gayling crush on the Professor. And he was smart! He could build a radio out of coconuts and have Gilligan power it with a bicycle and they would all be saved!
by Anonymous | reply 66 | August 10, 2022 9:12 PM |
The professor was supposed to be a closeted gay man. right? From IMDb:
[quote] This has got to the campiest TV show of all time. When you look at Gilligan's Island you see a stereotype of the different types of people who make up our society. You have the working closet gays (Skipper and Gilligan); the intellectual college homosexual Professor; the bisexual stripper, model, actress, coke whore (Ginger); the sweet closet lesbian (Mary-Ann) and the older rich kinky swingers (the Howells).
Except for Mary Ann, that seems about right to me. She seemed more like a Questioning virgin.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | August 10, 2022 9:15 PM |
@r66, "He could build a radio out of coconuts and have Gilligan power it with a bicycle and they would all be saved! "
He could do all that, but he couldn't patch a stupid hole in a boat 🙄
by Anonymous | reply 68 | August 10, 2022 9:34 PM |
The boat was named the "S.S. Minnow," because as The Skipper got fatter and FATTER, his penis began to shrink under his belly, becoming barely visible, and that's what it looked like.
When he was young and first started out, it had been called the S.S. Trout.

Gabriel's sexuality would have made him a perfect choice over Preston for Mame. Lucy always performed better when there was a clear sexual dynamic at stake. Look at ILL, clearly her and Desi were doing it. In truth all her great performances were fuelled by underlying sexual tension with her leading men: Desi, Henry Fonda, Gale Gordon

Denny Miller was super hot. Played Tarzan in one film in 1959. Was also on the old TV series Wagon Train (reruns are usually on channels like COZI-TV, ME-TV, Heroes & Icons, etc.). Denny guest-starred on the second episode of the Alice sitcom, as Mel's old friend, an ex-football player (and gay!).

The Professor would have fashioned a dildo device so the girls could join in and peg Gilligan, or each other.
