How Jacob Elordi became Gen Z's leading man

flash in the pan or ?

by Anonymousreply 178March 31, 2023 12:27 PM

Flaaaaaaaaaaaaasssssssh! Ah Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

by Anonymousreply 1August 8, 2022 3:44 PM

He sounds like a typical Pansexual GenZ kid in the interview.

by Anonymousreply 2August 8, 2022 3:48 PM

Oh no…

by Anonymousreply 3August 8, 2022 3:55 PM

Ah yes, one of those leading men who's never had a leading role

by Anonymousreply 4August 8, 2022 3:55 PM

He got lucky by showing versatility. Heartthrob in Netlfix rom-com franchise (Kissing Booth) and multi layered villain in HBO's Euphoria.

by Anonymousreply 5August 8, 2022 3:56 PM

[quote]He pierced his ears because Daniel Day-Lewis did. He wears a Saint Christopher medal, like Steve McQueen did. He’s carrying his Saltburn script around in a worn leather binder that used to belong to Gary Oldman – a gift from Oldman’s son Charlie, a close friend.

Hahaha

by Anonymousreply 6August 8, 2022 3:58 PM

R2, And that's what makes him hot.

by Anonymousreply 7August 8, 2022 3:59 PM

Everything he opens his mouth in an interview, his attractiveness level goes down several percentage points.

by Anonymousreply 8August 8, 2022 4:03 PM

[quote]And also, I was doing plays with girls’ schools. I’m spending my weekends with the most beautiful women from the school next door, reading the most romantic words ever written.”

"Yeah brah, this acting shit is just to get with chicks"

by Anonymousreply 9August 8, 2022 4:04 PM

How is he a leading man? He's only done teen oriented stuff. Leading man would imply he can get people of all ages into theatres. There aren't any leading men left except Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Cruise and The Rock. Those actors always guarantee a hit.

by Anonymousreply 10August 8, 2022 4:06 PM

Henry Eikenberry (Derek, Cal's HS boyfriend) is the hottest guy on Euphoria.

by Anonymousreply 11August 8, 2022 4:09 PM

GQ went downhill. It's now Teen Vogue mixed with I-D magazine. I don't think gentlemen buy it anymore.

by Anonymousreply 12August 8, 2022 4:10 PM

So boring. Cute but boring.

by Anonymousreply 13August 8, 2022 4:11 PM

R11 Yes. The actor who played Derek was hot and Cal was the most sympathetic character in the show because of his backstory. I had little sympathy for the teen cast for some reason. All were annoying. It's sad that the creators don't seem to want to develop legitimate gay or lesbian characters. Just make everyone bisexual assholes who are all attracted to trans girls.

by Anonymousreply 14August 8, 2022 4:16 PM

Flash for three key reasons:

1. He's not really that good of an actor. He's fine, but lacks range.

2. He's a douche. He openly talks smack about former co-stars and projects, like Heigl did about Knocked Up. You don't say crap about the vehicles which made you. It would be liike Tom Cruise bashing Risky Business or Julia Roberts bashing Pretty Woman. There are also rumors he's difficult on set - he's one of those actors who thinks he's better than he actually is, so has an opinion about how things should go.

3. Very messy personal life. He cheated on both Joey King and Zendaya. The world may forgive him for cheating on King although she's both well-liked and well-regarded. The world ain't going to forgive cheating on Zendaya.

by Anonymousreply 15August 8, 2022 4:19 PM

R10, Kevin Hart, Denzel, Michael B Jordan.

You tried it.

by Anonymousreply 16August 8, 2022 4:19 PM

R15 IOW, another Brenton Thwaites?

I guess that we can at least enjoy the view.

by Anonymousreply 17August 8, 2022 4:23 PM

R16 You make no sense I'm talking globally. Denzel yes I agree but he's moved on more to directing and producing and he doesn't do shitty blockbusters like The Rock. But the others, nope

by Anonymousreply 18August 8, 2022 4:23 PM

He's giving Ed Westwick at around the same age.

by Anonymousreply 19August 8, 2022 4:24 PM

I'm gay. So I don't care if bashes his previous work and he cheats on these women. That's purely frau crap. But that's his audience is teen fangirls who care too much about non issues. So he shouldn't piss them off.

by Anonymousreply 20August 8, 2022 4:25 PM

Can grandpa/OP learn how to properly post a fucking link?

by Anonymousreply 21August 8, 2022 4:33 PM

[quote] So I don't care if bashes his previous work and he cheats on these women.

These aren't moral imperatives that preclude him from being more than a flash in the pan.

They are pragmatic. Saying crap about former co-stars and projects makes you unlikable. People don't like to work with you and won't - again, see Heigl. People are less likely to hire you for projects if they're concerned that you won't do the promotion - he was notably absent from promoting the second and third Kissing Booth movies for Netflix. Studios want its stars to promote their projects - it's that simple. When you talk crap about them, especially when you should be promoting them, as he did, they become unhappy.

As for cheating, people in general like to wag their morality fingers. You don't become a big star unless you have broad appeal, so need a solid foundation upon which to build your audience. He's not getting nearly the bump that other stars from Euphoria are getting - they're sucking all the hype oxygen out of the room, leaving him very little.

by Anonymousreply 22August 8, 2022 4:34 PM

That's his problem. R22. I don't disagree but if he wants to be an idiot. Let him be. I don't think any of the Euphoria cast will go places except Zendaya (connections) and Sidney Sweeney (actual acting talent and looks). The rest will fade for obvious reasons. Teen soaps in general aren't a good start for a career. Even if they're on HBO.

by Anonymousreply 23August 8, 2022 4:38 PM

Jacob, I am the ghost of Christmas future!

Kevin hart and Michael Jordan are also big globally. And even with his softer returns in the states Will Smith is still huge globally. Also you left out Bradley Cooper.

At any rate, your original post was false because there are not merely 3 leading men left in Hollywood. Carry on.

by Anonymousreply 25August 8, 2022 4:56 PM

R23, Euphoria isn't a teen soap. It's a drama that takes place in high school.

by Anonymousreply 26August 8, 2022 4:58 PM

R26 It's written like a bad teensploitation movie from the 80s. It's not nearly as sophisticated as the fans like to paint it as. And yes it's marketed to 18 to 22 year olds and plenty of underated teens watch it. Given the TikTok fan videos. The actors looked like influencers and were cast to appeal to them. Just because it has nudity and sex doesn't make it mature. I tried watching it and got through the two seasons but it just doesn't work. I'm 29 and I think I'm at the point where I just have no interest in dramas about high school.

by Anonymousreply 27August 8, 2022 5:15 PM

R27, all I know is the characters are believable and this shit reminds me of my own high school in a present day suburban setting. I graduated from high school in 2006 in NYC. We didn't have tik tok back then. Everything else rings true and Ru's addiction story arc is done well.

by Anonymousreply 28August 8, 2022 5:18 PM

R26 r27 r28 It's a 'Weena watch.

by Anonymousreply 29August 8, 2022 5:22 PM

R28 It's still poorly written to me. I don't disagree kids do drugs and have sex. Everyone knows that. But the shitty writing and poor characterization takes me out of it especially season two which sucked donkey balls. High school is still boring and I rather not relive it vicariously through TV. Maybe if these characters were in their early to mid 20s I'd be more forgiving.

by Anonymousreply 30August 8, 2022 5:23 PM

I would love to watch Eric Dane and Jacob Elordi fuck

by Anonymousreply 31August 8, 2022 5:24 PM

R31 Yep. Both actors are sexy and it's implied in a creepy way that Cal molested Nate. It's odd how the most sympathetic character is Cal Jacobs mainly because of his closeted nature and the closet does make you insane. But Nate has no redeeming values and it's not explained nor justified why he's a sociopath who loves manipulating others. Season two seemed to romanticize him.

by Anonymousreply 32August 8, 2022 5:27 PM

Gen Z's leading man will probably be Timothee Chalamet or Tom Holland. And it's too soon to tell to have a declarative. Many actors don't become certified leading men until their 30s or even 40s. Women in their 20s and at the max their 30s. Doing a Netflix movie or high school drama isn't a sign of anything. You need a real blockbuster film and subsequent hits to get that title. Most actors took a while to get their big break: Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington, Demi Moore, Sandra Bullock, Halle Berry, Keanu Reeves, Brad Pitt, Will Smith, Leonardo DiCaprio, etc. Tom Cruise is an outlier because he got good roles from the start and seemed to have a seamless transition to a big Hollywood star. The others did theatre, sitcoms, commercials, kid and teen fare, soap operas, extra roles, low-budget movies and etc. They may have been somewhat-known but didn't become household names or global names before they got that defining role.

by Anonymousreply 33August 8, 2022 5:57 PM

R33: If Gen Z's leading man will be either Ratboy or Spiderman, then bye bye movies.

Take this with a grain of salt. GQ hypes up any mediocre boy they find on the street. They said the same thing about Henry Golding.

by Anonymousreply 36August 8, 2022 6:04 PM

What is the target audience for GQ now? I can't believe straight (or gay) men read it anymore. I think they're owned by the same corporation that owns the American Vogue, so it makes sense it went to the shitter.

by Anonymousreply 37August 8, 2022 6:08 PM

R37, I subscribe. I wouldsay gay men and Straight guys into fashion like Kanye. Influencer types.

by Anonymousreply 38August 8, 2022 6:11 PM

R38 So they replaced Complex and Hypebeast? No publications for men that want to see business, preppy and formalwear anymore?

by Anonymousreply 39August 8, 2022 6:13 PM

R35: He is aging badly. Do you think he's had any minor, subtle plastic surgery done?

by Anonymousreply 40August 8, 2022 6:14 PM

R35 … mmmm Nancy Kulp.

by Anonymousreply 41August 8, 2022 6:16 PM

I just went on GQ's website and it's all celebrity shilling. Nothing about fashion or men's lifestyle anymore. Just praising every male celeb, major or minor for their "fashion sense." I used to read GQ for its articles on fashion, hygiene, exercise and diet, technology and its journalist articles on politics and culture. Now it's gone the way of Vogue and Complex and became all about promoting celebrities instead of actually talking about real fashion.

by Anonymousreply 42August 8, 2022 6:21 PM

I was finished with GQ after they put Matt Damon on the cover last year as part of his comeback after his foot in mouth disease put him in a bad standing with the public. It was so blatantly obvious what his team was doing.

by Anonymousreply 43August 8, 2022 6:29 PM

These magazines are declining in sales and putting garbage like James Corden and Kim Kardashian on the covers aren't going to save them. Not just GQ but Vogue, Playboy and other magazines have cheapened their brands. If they want to survive they should go back to a premium subscription model. Release an collector's issue quarterly for a niche fanbase that will pay for it. It will add more exclusivity and some prestige back. These magazines also no longer hold any power over trends because of fashion influencers on social media. They aren't going to compete with people who post fashion tips online for free. So they may as well stop alienating their original fanbases and go back to catering to them.

by Anonymousreply 44August 8, 2022 6:40 PM

R44, I don't get what you mean. They still have premium subscriptions. You said go back. Do you mean these publications should be exclusively subscription service and only available for purchase in retail or grocery stores on a quarterly basis?

by Anonymousreply 45August 8, 2022 6:54 PM

R45 I mean they should cater to a smaller group of people and make the content more specific to that niche instead of broader celebrity culture (which a million subscription-free websites cover already). The premium means a higher price and higher quality of articles and photography to add more of an elite feel. Quarterly would be special editions for each season. Basically bring the quality back. They'll never make the same money they made in the era where print ruled. But they could recover their reputation through the niche model and target a smaller group that's willing to pay for quality.

by Anonymousreply 46August 8, 2022 7:04 PM

[R14] download Grindr and you would be surprised by how popular TS girls are. Fem only, TS only is a new trend

by Anonymousreply 47August 8, 2022 7:08 PM

Good-looking fantasy material but a bad actor and quite stupid. The story of most heartthrobs.

by Anonymousreply 48August 8, 2022 7:16 PM

R47 I know they are popular and so many hot buff bi DL guys exclusively seem into them (to my frustration). But my issue is every male on the show appears to be bisexual and all wants to fuck the same trans girl Jules? No offense to the actress but I have to seriously suspend my disbelief with that. I could make the case Cal is actually gay and pre-op trans girls are his way to get around his intense self-hatred. But his son and the other dude Elliot also having attraction seems a bit far-fetched. My biggest issue with Nate is how the show can't decide if he's straight, gay or bisexual. He's clearly not gay because he fucks women and he's clearly not straight because he has dicks on his phone and likes a pre-op trans girl. Yet people treat him like a closeted gay (season 2 play). If it's making a statement on bi erasure then it's a poor one.

by Anonymousreply 49August 8, 2022 7:21 PM

I'm probably going to get roasted for this, but oh what the hell. It doesn't matter the generation and it doesn't matter how much everyone talks about inclusivity and diversity and all that, but if you are a good looking straight, white guy with a personality the world is yours for the taking.

by Anonymousreply 50August 8, 2022 7:29 PM

r46 You think shrinking their audience - and therefore their revenue - will increase the quality of their articles?

by Anonymousreply 51August 8, 2022 7:29 PM

R50 That's just realism there. We all know the truth. I think it's fraus and fems that try to deny it. But the silver lining is these young good-looking white straight guys tend to go downhill after 35. But I personally feel if you're good-looking, intelligent, funny, successful and educated man of color, you'll have it good but just don't compare to the white guys.

by Anonymousreply 52August 8, 2022 7:33 PM

What projects has he trashed? I heard he refused to get naked for Season 2 of Euphoria so I didn't bother watching.

He's hot, but no one is paying attention to his acting. He'll be back to VOD movies by age 35.

by Anonymousreply 53August 8, 2022 8:17 PM

[quote]but if you are a good looking straight, white guy with a personality the world is yours for the taking.

I will expand on this r50

Jacob Elordi is what happens when Hollywood finds a tall, straight, moderately talented, generically good looking actor who is buzzworthy but also a willing whore.

They do this every decade or so because they don't come along too often. Ben Affleck notoriously posed barechested on GQ at the start of his career and then willed himself into a career. A few years later, Josh Hartnett became the willing whore of the moment and got the Vanity Fair cover. He backed out of the arrangement after several flops and retreated from Hollywood. Then there was Taylor Kitsch. Lather, rinse, repeat.

by Anonymousreply 54August 8, 2022 8:19 PM

He wasn't the only one to complain about the excessive nudity and sex. The female costars did too. They all had a point, the dick and tit scenes added nothing to the show except shock value. Sam Levinson is just Larry Clark 2.0 with a higher budget lol.

by Anonymousreply 55August 8, 2022 8:20 PM

Whose Jacob Elordy!

by Anonymousreply 56August 8, 2022 8:57 PM

He made a point of saying that he's heterosexual, r2, after previously encouraging speculation of bisexuality.

[Quote] I’m going to be who I am when I was your friend, which is this hetero guy, but I’m going to play the arts.

by Anonymousreply 57August 8, 2022 9:01 PM

DLers need to understand letting old Hollywood pervs suck your dick for a role does not make you gay. It just makes you a whore.

by Anonymousreply 58August 8, 2022 9:07 PM

by Anonymousreply 59August 8, 2022 9:18 PM

Can he be called a leading man when he’s relatively untested? He’s only “known” for an ensemble TV show and a corny Netflix movie.

by Anonymousreply 63August 8, 2022 10:19 PM

And playing a side dude in that terrible Ben Affleck movie.

by Anonymousreply 64August 8, 2022 10:26 PM

He looks good in the show coz he's tall. Imagine his face pairing with 5'7 body

by Anonymousreply 65August 9, 2022 3:20 AM

[R49] I agree with you to a certain extent. Sam, the director might not have real life experience. Usually a guy who's into a pre-op TS girl like Jules don't like fucking vaginas, which means the plot of Nate's triangle with Cassie and Maddy doesn't make any sense.

by Anonymousreply 66August 9, 2022 3:28 AM

R66 Jules has a penis.

by Anonymousreply 67August 9, 2022 7:57 AM

R66 That’s untrue. Guys who are into pre-OP trans are typically bisexual.

Trans women don’t get operations because they lose their chicks with dicks appeal.

I’ve seen one post-op trans porno ever.

by Anonymousreply 68August 9, 2022 7:59 AM

R55 Sex scenes are fun.

Game of Thrones started sucking when they stopped all the sex scenes.

by Anonymousreply 69August 9, 2022 8:09 AM

He sounds insufferable and he'll likely be forgotten in a few years, if that.

by Anonymousreply 70August 9, 2022 8:14 AM

R69 OK, so the writing had nothing to do with it? I don't hate sex scenes or nudity, I just don't think they serve a purpose to the narrative of the show. None of the sex scenes are arousing and hot to me either.

by Anonymousreply 71August 9, 2022 9:00 AM

The suggestion that someone has sex with a trans person as a halfway house to gaydom is stupid reasoning.

by Anonymousreply 72August 9, 2022 11:49 AM

Honestly have never heard of the guy and I didn't watch the Elvis movie, but as a "Gen Z leading man" I was expecting an effete skinny teenage looking self described non binary talking about gender fluidity and wearing a dress. Glad to see it wasn't the case.

by Anonymousreply 73August 9, 2022 1:22 PM

I would take him over Chalamet, Tom Holland, Adam Driver, etc any day of the week for sure.

by Anonymousreply 74August 9, 2022 1:25 PM

R8 is 100% correct. And his lack of nudity on Euphoria (which is clearly his choice) isn’t doing him any favors. He seems to have deluded himself into thinking the pouty bad boy act is new and exciting. It’s not and his window for retaining relevancy is closing…fast.

by Anonymousreply 75August 9, 2022 1:32 PM

r81 she must have done a lot of lumberjacking in those tiffany earrings then! 🤪

by Anonymousreply 82August 9, 2022 3:33 PM

Like Harry Styles, he's too masculine to pull off androgynous. You know that style isn't his own. The media loves white straight men being "queer" and "emasculated." And let's get real, if they did find actual effeminate gay men for these shoots and pull it off effortlessly. The gays of DL would hate still and accuse them of perpetuating stereotypes.

by Anonymousreply 83August 9, 2022 4:02 PM

[quote]What projects has he trashed?

r53 - The Kissing Booth movies on Netflix. You know, the ones that gave him his huge break, his first role in anything where he had more than a couple lines.

Yeah, they're your standard teen flicks. But, they hit huge on Netflix. According to Netflix's most watched movies, based on Netflix's own reporting of total hours viewed in the first 28 days of each titles' release, Kissing Booth 2 is #8 movie of all time.

He not only did he barely do any promotion, but when he did any interviews, he had obvious disdain for the movies, unlike his co-stars.

It says something about you when you shit on the vehicle that gave you your big break. He was nothing before it. He would NEVER have even been considered for Euphoria if he hadn't hit so big with those movies.

by Anonymousreply 84August 9, 2022 4:10 PM

Yeah he should have waited at least a decade before he trashed them. I get working shitty jobs you hate but you need a longer time to pass when you get established to start criticizing anything. Most Hollywood actors are often embarrassed by their first couple of roles but usually keep it to themselves. But he's an Aussie and they don't give a shit about that. Hollywood is all about kissing ass and jerking off the higher ups and directors. If you're brutally honest it will bruise narcissistic egos

by Anonymousreply 85August 9, 2022 4:22 PM

[quote]If you're brutally honest it will bruise narcissistic egos

"Brutal honesty" is a myth that people without filters, common sense, common decency, and decorum tell themselves to justify their assholery.

Movie making, whether in Hollywood or elsewhere, is a business.

Even if you don't give a shit about "kissing ass," he ought to have the sense to recognize that it's self-defeating to talk trash about your biggest hit. It's like idiots who talk smack about the school from which they got a degree. If you talk about what a crappy school it is, aren't you basically saying your own degree is worthless? Are you admitting that the degree that you're flashing is worthless?

Actors need to recognize that it's not about "jerking off the higher ups and directors" - it's about a symbiotic relationship where success of a project is beneficial to all parties involved. Bankable get a wider selection of projects. Actors with a track record are forgiven bomb after bomb long enough to get their next hit.

Folks can prance around claiming they are "thespians" and decry the death of "cinema," but without the profit motive of popular films, there would be far fewer opportunities for these same folks to "practice" their "art."

Say what you will about the ridiculous Marvel and comic book movies, but they are about the only things right now bringing audiences to theaters. Wtihout them keeping theaters afloat, fewer movies would have an opportunity for theatrical release.

by Anonymousreply 86August 9, 2022 8:35 PM

I doubt he really cares about the quality of the Kissing Booth movies. He probably didn't get the raise he wanted for the sequels - I think 2 and 3 were filmed back-to-back. That Affleck movie was a piece of shit but Jacob boy still signed on to do it.

by Anonymousreply 87August 9, 2022 8:39 PM

He wants to be seen as a serious actor...so he did Euphoria and that Affleck movie.

Sure thing Himbo.

by Anonymousreply 88August 9, 2022 8:43 PM

R86 You care wayyyyy too much about this. Who gives a shit if he is ruining his career? Doesn't affect me. It's on him. I just hope he does more nudity.

by Anonymousreply 89August 9, 2022 8:48 PM

R89 same, though he seems to be anti-nudity now.

Hunny...it's your main skill.

by Anonymousreply 90August 9, 2022 8:50 PM

by Anonymousreply 98August 9, 2022 9:45 PM

Is he though? I think Tom Holland and Timothee are much more popular and well-known.

JE is pretty but, has a soulless quality to him.

by Anonymousreply 99August 9, 2022 9:49 PM

Holland has an everyman look to him which is very helpful. He's not intimidating to straight men and he's attractive enough for straight women. Chalamet has the quirky character roles on lock. Basically a new Johnny Depp.

Elordi is no different than any of the WB/CW eye candy. Looks good and takes his shirt and smoulders. He'll be end up doing Hallmark or GAC movies like Chad Michael Murray and Jesse Metcalfe. And promoting diet plans and pills on his social media for cash.

by Anonymousreply 100August 9, 2022 9:53 PM

R100 nails it exactly. The most useful part of R35's article is that Roald Dahl was a notorious antisemite. I'm not sure why Chalamet would want to play a character invented by a terrible person... Oh, yeah: money. Wonka is a hard pass for me.

R99: Despite the efforts, it seems that it is not so easy to make him a household name. I thought he would become more popular after Dune, but it doesn't look so. Nobody really cares about him other than teenage girls and confused middle aged women. His fanbase is small but rabid and loyal.

by Anonymousreply 105August 9, 2022 10:53 PM

r83 men are masculine jacob looks like a lil girl in the face.

by Anonymousreply 106August 10, 2022 12:21 AM

R106 No he doesn't though. He looks like a redneck to me. Put him in a baseball cap and a pickup truck and he'd fit.

by Anonymousreply 107August 10, 2022 12:39 AM

I wouldn't put Elordi on the same level as a typical CW actor. He has more to him than, say, Chace Crawford. But, yes, he's an ungrateful little shit.

by Anonymousreply 108August 10, 2022 12:40 AM

R100: They’re trying to sell Chalamet as that as well: cute enough to bring the girls to the theater but not too intimidating to the guys. He doesn’t seem to be connecting strongly though with straight or gay men. I think Elordi is overhyped in the looks and talent departments but still I would take him any day over Chalamet and Holland.

by Anonymousreply 109August 10, 2022 1:12 PM

Chalamet is charming enough in interviews. Elordi is not.

by Anonymousreply 110August 10, 2022 1:15 PM

Chalamet grew up in sophisticated New York and traveling to France, hobnobbing with his family’s friends in the arts and culture, Elordi grew up in the far reaches of Australia.

by Anonymousreply 111August 10, 2022 6:19 PM

So Elordi is more like Heath Ledger, Nicole Kidman, Margot Robbie and Russell Crowe (not Australian but the point stands). I always thought of Australia as similar to the American Southwest. Not very PC but very friendly and outgoing.

by Anonymousreply 112August 10, 2022 6:21 PM

Witty banter, repartee and bon mots are not standard nor developed skills for boy’s private school rugby players.

by Anonymousreply 113August 10, 2022 6:24 PM

Is Australia as classist as The UK?

by Anonymousreply 114August 10, 2022 6:26 PM

Melbourne, friendly. Sydney, not. The gays in Sydney are the worst.

by Anonymousreply 115August 10, 2022 6:31 PM

R114 I’ve always wondered if they have a Mayflower culture there, but related to which prison ships one’s ancestors arrived on?

by Anonymousreply 116August 10, 2022 6:38 PM

Cher’s song Gypsys, Tramps and Thieves may as well be the theme song for the founding Europeans of Australia.

by Anonymousreply 117August 10, 2022 6:40 PM

[quote]Witty banter, repartee and bon mots

Chalamet isn't capable of these either, despite the sophisticated upbringing you make-believe he had

Instead he spent his time idolising athletes and rappers

by Anonymousreply 118August 10, 2022 6:43 PM

Both The Americas and Australia were both colonies where Europe dumped its prisoners, indentured servants and rejects. I think the biggest difference is The US separated from England very early on and the country was established by the wealthy Anglo-Protestant elite who were the ruling class. And they need to distinguish themselves from the French/Spanish/Dutch who had their own colonies which they purchased/conquered, the Indigenous population who were very resistant, and the black slave population and poor whites they looked down upon. Australia was mostly uninhabitable, the English killed off most of the Aborigine population and the country separated from England much later and there was a lot of Irish and Scottish early on. Catholicism became the biggest denomination. So I don't think there was ever was a WASP ruling class in Australia. The WASP identity is very tied to slavery and anti-Catholic sentiment.

by Anonymousreply 119August 10, 2022 6:54 PM

He's one of those actors that shouldn't give interviews because he just comes off as incredibly stupid. Vanessa Hudgens and the drag queen Shea Coulee come to mind.

by Anonymousreply 120August 10, 2022 6:59 PM

He comes across as a wet blanket. He would never be really into voguing right now.

by Anonymousreply 121August 10, 2022 7:19 PM

I don't understand why Euphoria is a "gay show" when the actual gayness is at a minimum and we see hetero fucking and tits everywhere. The Cal/Derek scenes were the only gay things about the show. And I don't consider Rue fucking Jules as gay. It's the everyone is bi trope that's rife everywhere now.

by Anonymousreply 122August 10, 2022 7:27 PM

He was heavily pushed to the point of oversaturation in various formats and platforms.

He's not particularly leading but he'll remain close to the center in this generation's psyche because of it. Well, the odds are good for it. The nostalgia facot is fair enough but quickly passing peak. So, It really depends more on lasting hard entertainment media. If he moves into low brow comedies soon, he'll improve his odds of sustainability fifteen years down the road. Otherwise his targeted generation is millennials.

by Anonymousreply 123August 10, 2022 7:48 PM

Who calls Euphoria a gay show? It's meant for teens and pervs who get off on the idea of high schoolers fucking

by Anonymousreply 126August 10, 2022 8:11 PM

Now. He was in three movies set in a Kissing Booth. They must have varied the camera angles a lot.

Timothee also went to school with Ansel Elgort who is now attempting his comeback with this Japanese TV show Tokyo Vice.

Who has since come out as transgender r92 and now has been seen with Lucas Hedges. Lucas Hedges was being promoted as the next big star in Hollywood.

Jacob Elordi's co-star Angus Cloud in his new interview/photoshoot. Says that it's getting frustrating that people keep associating him with his Fez character on Euphoria and how easy it must be for him to just come to set and be himself.

R84 Chris Evans said he thought “Not Another Teen Movie” was hilarious and didn’t grasp it was a shitty movie until reflection.

by Anonymousreply 131August 10, 2022 10:36 PM

R131 it should be in the Criterion Collection for the Banana Split Scene alone

by Anonymousreply 132August 10, 2022 10:39 PM

When did Evans make that comment, though?

by Anonymousreply 133August 10, 2022 10:48 PM

Not Another Teen Movie was hilarious at the time when it was parodying the oversaturation of teen movies and soaps of the y2k era. Just like how Scary Movie was funny at the time due to the Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer mania. They need to make a movie parodying the influencer culture that's rife now.

by Anonymousreply 138August 11, 2022 5:03 PM

R109, Jacob is too tall (6'5") and charisma-free; Tom H. is too short (5'6"), too weak-looking, and very, very bland; and Timmy is not-masculine of face or hair. Not a true leading man among them (e.g., "Bones and All" was, in the parlance, a Box Office flop).

R73, To whom do you refer with your mention of "The Elvis movie"? Jacob will BE in one (Sofia Coppola's "Priscilla," based on the book "Elvis and Me"), but wasn't part of THE one.

by Anonymousreply 139March 23, 2023 4:14 PM

He will be the biggest star since Leo. And bigger because he’s hotter.

by Anonymousreply 140March 23, 2023 4:25 PM

I'd never seen an interview with him, but I just found this one, and I think he's completely charming on top of his physical beauty.

by Anonymousreply 141March 23, 2023 4:32 PM

R33 I may be in the minority but I think Tom Holland is already over or on his downward spiral to character actor nothingness, like all the other Spider Men. He has some glaring issues right now.

1. His height. Cute while playing a teenager, not so much as a leading man. And no, he’s not going to be the next Tom Cruise (hot, All American looking man beef).

2. He’s aging like a banana. He already had childhood wrinkles, it’s really coming through. He looks old and tired already, and he hasn’t even hit 30.

3. He has only shown a very narrow range.

He is like able but already an afterthought. What has he done of note since Spider Man and why hasn’t he gotten anything big or good?

His biggest career move right now is his relationship with Zendaya. Without her, he’s really not noticed these days.

by Anonymousreply 142March 23, 2023 5:58 PM

R142 I know what o wanted to say. Tom was a studio pushed “star”. There was noting organic about his rise. Marvel picked him out of almost obscurity, said he’s the star of a huge franchise, the public loved/accepted him in that role, but it never got beyond that because when not pushing Marvel stuff he just retreats back into his private life (uh, so British).

So, killed his own momentum by being so closed off and relying too much on Spider Man. Though, the royalties alone from the last movie mean he will never have to work another day in his life.

by Anonymousreply 143March 23, 2023 6:01 PM

I was shocked to find out that Julie Bowen at r141 was born in 1970 [!], making her more than a quarter of a century older than Jacob [b.1997]!

But from the clip, I had thought she’s just a bit older than him, like a big sister, never suspecting that she’s old enough to be his mother

You see it in people like Brad Pitt and Keane Reeves in their younger days, for example

by Anonymousreply 154March 26, 2023 4:14 AM

[quote]I think truly gorgeous people have this perverse need to make themselves look ‘ugly’ from time to time

When you try to think about it from their perspective, it's not so perverse. In all honestly, I imagine it must be at least sometimes be an emotional strain to have everyone's attention constantly focused on you because you're so beautiful, so maybe, from time to time, these people simply enjoy a break from that.

by Anonymousreply 155March 26, 2023 1:19 PM

[quote]I may be in the minority but I think Tom Holland is already over or on his downward spiral to character actor nothingness, like all the other Spider Men. He has some glaring issues right now.

Holland has had two HUGE flops outside Spiderman - Uncharted and Chaos Walking, both of which should have been popular since they were adapted from successful properties. He's had one relatively well-received dramatic role The Devil All the Time. I agree that he's not going to have a big career outside Spiderman - he's not Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who is listed as being 5'9" compared to what they list Holland as 5'8" although both are closer to 5'6" or 5'7" at most). However, he's extremely likeable.

Elordi is the new Alex Pettyfer - difficult to deal with, apparently a pain in the ass on set, and thinks he's a much better actor than he actually is. He says douchey things and committed the same sin that DL Fav Heigl did by badmouthing past projects and refusing to do press to promote it (the Kissing Booth movies for Netflix) - which is compounded by the fact that those movie are what put him on the map that allowed him to even be considered for Euphoria.

by Anonymousreply 156March 26, 2023 1:35 PM

R156 Alex Pettyfer didn't have any gay rumors, why?

[quote]Could it be…?

Elordi has unendingly whined about working out for the first Kissing Booth movie. He's whined about how interviewers wanted to discuss his body and working out.

Superman would require him to workout and discuss his body once again. DC would be fools to hire someone who has proven unable to perform in a gracious manner the very necessary PR required for such movies. Eventually, he'll also hold them hostage for more money or decide he's made enough and jumps ship. Also, he simply doesn't have the charm or personality for Superman.

by Anonymousreply 162March 28, 2023 9:32 PM

Gosh, he really is insufferable. I wish they didn't cast him in Euphoria, because the lack of nudity from Nate made an already boring character, by Season 2, even more dull. Jacob refused to show his ass again.
