By characterizing the messages as "intimate" the lawyer can sit back and wait for someone else to make the call about whether they get released. He doesn't need to release them.

Either a judge will rule they are relevant and they'll get released or Jones/Stone will need to decide whether they need/want to clarify the nature of "intimate" which would either lead to some fairly embarrassing revelations or Jones/Stone will have to live withe public's imagination on the nature of "intimate" messages between them.

By saying their "intimate" rather than "private" or some other description, he is absolutely accurate and embarrassing them with plausible deniability. He's made them look bad without doing anything at all.
