First look at “Welcome to Chippendales”

Kumail Nanjiani is Steve Banerjee

Murray Bartlett is Nick De Noia

Will he do his Murderville walk?

by Anonymousreply 1August 4, 2022 2:47 PM

Where's the beef?

[quote] Kumail Nanjiani

Hard pass.

by Anonymousreply 3August 4, 2022 3:12 PM

The strippers seem to have been largely cast from professional dancers per Instagram

Spencer Boldman appears to have the biggest role of the strippers

Didn't Kumail get really buff for a role not that long ago? Has he put on weight again or have they just made him look fat?

by Anonymousreply 5August 5, 2022 3:52 PM

I saw like a 20/20 or 48 Hours mega special on this and it was absolutely crazy, I hope they are doing this as farce and not just straight forward. A bit like that Nazi hunting show, Hunters, on Prime with Lerman and Pacino.

by Anonymousreply 6August 5, 2022 3:54 PM

LOL, R3!

by Anonymousreply 7August 5, 2022 4:26 PM

Maybe they put him in a fat suit r5.

by Anonymousreply 8August 5, 2022 6:09 PM

Joe Manganiello as naive young stripper trying to make a name for himself in a world of cutthroat competition.

by Anonymousreply 9August 5, 2022 6:52 PM

Spencer Boldman’s role appears to be inspired by Michael Rapp who was Chippendales’ most famous performer in the 80s

Rapp was better looking IMO (5:18)

I'd just hope they include the eye rolling, hated of Chippendales by the gay community. . it's like the first public disdain of fraudom... there was a strange homophobia associated with it all. They were very public about it.

I'd be more keen on what happened to gay gogoboy and stripper scene as a result; i.e. the counter being driven to the full monty and bordering on public porn. Of course, the euro scene essentially was always that.. . honestly, euro women could have put both the american gays and fraus to shame.

then it went through a bit of a reformation period, a revival of burlesque before dita von tiste would be attributed as the queen of that - not that she necessarily claimed that title herself but a ho is going ho. and we saw more a puish to more of the performative... the gay stripping scene had to up their ante beyond just being purdy. on the peripheral, you had things like say cirque du soleil.. which, although, many thought was very gay they, too, had this underlining history of homophobia and discrimination against their employees. but I digress. . . perhaps just the nature of the times, even ballet moved to a don't ask, don't tell position despite being well known for attracting moes.

wasn't this already a movie on USA? I remember watching it with Victor Webster

That was 22 years ago r13

by Anonymousreply 14August 22, 2022 8:29 PM

and you'll probably see more skin from that movie than "Welcome to Chippendales"

r5, it was for a Marvel role, and he was really really ripped.

Is Juliette Lewis playing a transvestite?

I won't watch it until i can be sure Kumail does NOT strip in this himself.

by Anonymousreply 22October 18, 2022 4:39 PM

It looks good but it annoys the hell out of me they didn’t remove the Library Tower for those skyline shots

by Anonymousreply 23October 18, 2022 5:10 PM

There have been many projects about this already r13. That one you refer to was "The Chippendales Murder", there was also another movie I saw called "Just Can't Get Enough" which I remember thinking was good fun and the lead had great pecs. And there have been many documentaries.

It's well worn ground.

by Anonymousreply 24October 18, 2022 5:18 PM

Dan Stevens is very cute in this.

Its a good role for Nanjiani because there's no need to pretend he is good looking.

As for the questions above - Najiani said on a talk show that he ate a lot to gain weight for the shoot. He has since slimmed down again. He was slim on the talk show.

The Beckham boy's wife is in this, didn't know she was an actress

It isn't good. Blah.

by Anonymousreply 28November 28, 2022 1:21 AM

R26 Nicola Peltz Beckham. She plays Dorothy Stratton. I didn't realize it was this actress, who always gets such bad press. I thought she was both really good and really pretty in Episode 1.

by Anonymousreply 29November 28, 2022 1:22 AM

I stumbled across this on Hulu last night, so I watched the first two episodes (all that are available at this point). I really enjoyed it. It was well done. Good use of period music. Nice choreography. Intriguing story. Looking forward to seeing future episodes.

Didn't recognize that at Murray Bartlett right away, but by end of episode, I was wondering if that was Murray.

Also did not recognize Dan Stevens at all. Nothing about his performance reminded me in the least bit of Matthew Crawley. My mouth dropped open when I looked up the cast list and saw Dan was playing Paul Snider.

by Anonymousreply 30November 28, 2022 1:25 AM

Is there dick? Is there body hair?

by Anonymousreply 31November 28, 2022 1:36 AM

It’s good! I watched the first two episodes.

by Anonymousreply 32November 28, 2022 2:23 AM

I know it's supposed to be the '70s, but Murray's hair is hideous.

by Anonymousreply 33November 29, 2022 8:41 AM

I saw a version of this with Naveen Andrews 25 years ago

by Anonymousreply 34November 29, 2022 9:22 AM

I'm watching the A&E documentary now. Murray really nails Nick's look.

Dan Peterson, their famed Tom Selleck lookalike, aged like shit.

Andrew Rannells, looking porky, bottoms for Murray Bartlett.

by Anonymousreply 36December 8, 2022 12:34 AM

It wasn't part of the show, they just happened to have the camera running.

by Anonymousreply 37December 8, 2022 12:36 AM

Thank you, R31. I'm curious as hell, too.

by Anonymousreply 38December 8, 2022 12:58 AM

One of my coworkers today told me he used to be a stripper in his early 20s. He's from Tijuana. He told me this on Skype.

by Anonymousreply 39December 8, 2022 1:02 AM

Low budget series and sad little scenes in the club with not enough extras. You can practically see the boom mic.

by Anonymousreply 40December 8, 2022 1:13 AM

Kathy Najimy is in Chip & Dale?

by Anonymousreply 41December 8, 2022 1:16 AM

I remember Playgirl had a Chippendales calendar in 1981 (my senior year at college). I kept it under my socks in the drawer. It was full-frontal and most, if not all, of the models were actual Chippendale dancers.

by Anonymousreply 42December 8, 2022 2:17 AM

I was never into Chippenales, though i love muscleboy strippers. My problems with them were:

1) I hated the cuffs-and-collar signature accoutrements (they looked ridiculous)

2) I hate (and still hate) how women respond to male strippers by screaming their heads off, which Chippendales encouraged;

3) I thought most of the men looked stupid when they wore long "Fabio" hair (which was a big thing among Chippendales strippers)

by Anonymousreply 43December 8, 2022 2:22 AM

I’m enjoying the derision around Kumail.

Whenever I see a picture of him, I want to punch him.

by Anonymousreply 44December 8, 2022 2:30 AM

Fallen asleep already. Hope the dot Indian shit actor gets to take his shirt off, finally. he seemed so proud of it in the poo Eternals film, and never got to be naked.

by Anonymousreply 45December 8, 2022 4:51 AM

I think a lot of Chippendales strippers posed full-frontal in Playgirl. They may not have been employed by Chippendales at the time, but I recall Playgirl asserting these particular men were Chippendales strippers.

I imagine once you're only wearing something like a tiny speedo or g-string, going full monty is not a step too far.

by Anonymousreply 46December 9, 2022 2:12 AM

I just watched the first three episodes of this. What a shitfest. And Murray Bartlett is awful. I've never seen him in anything outside a Sex & The City episode. This is what everyone's raving about? He's a terrible actor. Everyone in it is bad (except for the Black stripper, who is a very good actor). When Annaleigh Ashford is giving the best performance among the leads, you know you're doing something wrong.

I hope this thing sank like a stone.
