Warren Christopher
Let's discuss Warren M. Christopher.
He was the quintessential sophisticated buttoned-up corporate litigator and diplomat.
He was associated with the law firm O'Melveny & Myers from 1950 until 2011, with high ranking government positions in between- Counsel to CA Governor Pat Brown, Deputy AG for LBJ, Deputy Secretary of State for President Carter, and Secretary of State for Bill Clinton.
A graduate of UCLA and Stanford, Christopher was a die hard supporter of both teams. Known for his impeccable dress, and fondness for double breasted suits, Christopher was also a wine, opera, and classical music aficionado.

R1 Bull. If DLers can discuss the Golden Girls house layout, I can discuss a former Secretary of State.

He was one of those guys, I remember always being on the news, seemingly involved in everything, but you could never be sure what he was actually doing.

R6 Yeah. I think Clinton's White House was interesting. On one hand you had the "partiers" George Stephanopoulos, Mark McLarty, Vince Foster, Dede Meyers, Anthony Lake, etc.
Then he had the adults- Warren Christopher, William Perry, and Janet Reno.

He was a dreamboat, but he never seemed to notice me, no matter how flirtatiously I dressed!

Who says Janet Reno wasn't a partier?

From here on in, Janet Reno is a lady!
Listen, honey, these days nothing's impossible! Anything goes!

R10 was Reno a heterosexual? I took her as asexual at best.

No word of lie or exaggeration...I have to tell this story every time I see or hear Warren Christopher's name.
When Christopher was Sec. of State, I was listening to a local radio station. The DJ at the time was ranting...RANTING about how people didn't know who the Vice President was, or how most people were politically ignorant etc. He was disgusted, because he took time out to keep up with politics and know the major players of who ran our government and shame on people who didn't.
RIGHT AFTER HIS RANT....he starts to read a news headline:
"Secretary of State Christopher held a press briefing today....oh....wait.....I'm sorry.....I hate when they leave out the last name....I'll get his name shortly" 😑

He's partially the reason we got Bush Jr as President. He was the refined elder of the party who wanted to negotiate like gentlemen while the Bush family's guy James Baker outgunned him at every turn. You can get a sense of how it went down in the HBO movie RECOUNT (all of which is true, while not word for word, everything you see in that movie happened.)

What was secretary of state Warren Christopher doing on vice-president Al Gore's election team? That's not a usual arrangement.

R23 He was on the recount team, both sides called in party elder statesmen.

The Warren Christopher story I always remember is the one in which Clinton called a staff retreat and they had a touchy-feely session run by Naomi Klein or someone like that. Everyone had to go around and share a personal story and Clinton talked about being made fun of as a boy for his weight. It got to Christopher and he just sat there, refused to participate. He may have left the room. Really funny.

R28 From Clinton's bio, My Life:
The rest of the retreat was devoted to more informal, personal conversations. On Saturday night there was a session, run by a facilitator who was a friend of Al Gore’s, in which we were supposed to bond by sitting in a group, taking turns telling something about ourselves the others didn’t know. Though the exercise got mixed reviews, I actually enjoyed it, and managed to confess that, as a child, I was overweight and often ridiculed.
Lloyd Bentsen thought the whole exercise was silly and went back to his cabin; if there was something about him the rest of us didn’t know, it was intentional. Bob Rubin stayed, but said he didn’t have anything to say—apparently such group unburdening wasn’t the key to his success at Goldman Sachs.
Warren Christopher did participate, probably because he was the most disciplined man on the planet and thought this baby-boomer version of Chinese water torture would somehow strengthen his already considerable character. All in all, the weekend was helpful, but the real bonding would come in the fires of the struggles, victories, and defeats that lay ahead.

He has the eyes of a drinker. What do we think he poison was? Scotch on the rocks? I love a bit of Washington gossip. Also thank you R28. You reminded me I have got to read more biographies this summer. I always love them but rarely select them. I'm such an international intrigue fiction whore.

Clinton followed the JFK/Nixon lead in appointing an establishment face to the State Department, with the intention of running foreign policy from the White House.
