by Anonymous | reply 61 | July 26, 2022 7:00 PM |
He spoke about the depression he struggled with. From CNN:
In a January interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Dow recalled learning over a hamburger and malt that he was offered the part after auditioning on a whim.
"There went my life," he said.
Wally Cleaver, the straight-arrow teenage son, star athlete and Boy Scout, became inextricably tied to Dow, who said he struggled to stand on his own.
"It's sad to be famous at 12 years old or something, and then you grow up and become a real person, and nothing's happened for you," he told CBS.
Dow, who said he experienced undiagnosed depression from age 20 to age 40, spoke out for decades about his mental health challenges, long before it was common for celebrities to disclose that information publicly. In 1993, he was an honorary speaker at a convention for the National Depressive and Manic-Depressive Association.
"I realize there's a perceived irony about this," he told the Baltimore Sun of his depression in 1993. "You know, the fact that I was in a TV program that epitomized the supposed ideal world of the '50s, and here I'm suffering from depression. But I'm just one of millions."
Dow told CBS that once he accepted his diagnosis and began treatment, he found hope. He channeled that hope into art, too, sculpting ornate pieces at his home studio.
"I think people should take the leap of faith that they can feel better," he said.

Tony leaves an empty place in my heart that won’t be filled. He was always the kindest, most generous, gentle, loving, sincere, and humble man, that it was my honor and privilege to be able to share memories together with for 65 years. Tony was so grateful for all of the love and support from our fans across the world. My wife Teresa and I send our deepest condolences to his wife Lauren, his family and to all of those who knew and loved him. The world may have lost a star today, but the heavens gained another."

Actually, he's not correct--one of the reasons that made "Leave it to Beaver" not only popular but also a critical favorite was that it DIDN'T show an idealized world. Unlike other sitcoms, Ward and June often didn't know how to best help Wally and Beaver with their problems, or fully understand what was going on in their lives (they had Eddie's number as a hypocrite to some degree, but they didn't know how cruel he could be to both Wally and Beaver when they weren't around).
It was also the first television show to show a toilet in a bathroom.

R71 Yes, but most problems were solved at the end of the episode. Real life isn't quite so compact in working through things. Wonderful show though. Larry Mondello really seemed very real, so natural. Ward and June were on to Eddie after a while, but true, I don't ever think they saw his gangster side at its worst.

by Anonymous | reply 80 | July 26, 2022 8:00 PM |
Leave it to Beaver wasn't idealized!
My favorite episodes were the daring ones, like when Beaver is molested by Mr. Rutherford, Wally and Eddie kiss on the lips before Eddie gets drafted and dies in Vietnam, Ward has an affair with his secretary and gives an STD to June, June is zonked out on Miltown and misses Beaver's recital, Lumpy kills a family driving while intoxicated....I'm sure I'm forgetting some.

Tony Dow is not dead to me!
UPDATE: Tony Dow is still alive. I had a conversation with his wife, Lauren. She is understandably distraught and grief-stricken about what's been going on with Tony's health battle these past months. He's been in hospice care at their home, and based on some health issues overnight, Lauren inferred that Tony had passed away to some people close to her and the word quickly spread. Lauren admits she's been "a little fuzzy" these days--understandable.
She told me she now feels "foolish" about what has transpired since his death has been reported around the world. She also told me, through her pain, "it is of my own doing." I told her we know it's been a very stressful time and people understand overwhelming grief. Lauren says she "loves and adores" her husband of 42 years with all of her heart.
While she did say he passed, she now understands the miscommunication and is sorry for causing a commotion in this challenging time.

Actor, director and artist Tony Dow, who is well known for playing Wally Cleaver on the 1950s sitcom “Leave It to Beaver,” is near death but remains alive and breathing, his wife Lauren Shulkind told CBS on Tuesday.
The actor’s managers erroneously reported his death Tuesday morning on Facebook. The post was later removed, and Shulkind confirmed that her husband remains in hospice care.
Dow’s son Christopher told Fox News Digital that the actor is under hospice care and “in his last hours.”
So, he'll be dead by sundown probably.

My personal favorite Leave It To Beaver episode was the one where things got pretty freaky with Ward, June and Eddie Haskell.
Ward: "Eddie, you're such a fine, strong young man. There's been something I've been meaning to ask you. I guess you could call it a favor."
Eddie: "Golly gee Mr. Cleaver, I'm always happy to help you out with a favor. What is it?"
Ward: "I want to watch you fuck my wife. I'll just sit in the corner and jerk off. Unless you want me to do more."
Eddie: "Gee Mr. Cleaver, I wouldn't mind if you joined in. Not at all!"
That was such a good episode.

"Ozzie and Harriet" started as a radio show, on which, as in real life, Ozzie was a bandleader and Harriet was a singer with his band. David and Ricky were originally played by child actors, not their actual kids, on radio, When the show moved to television, it took on the suburban setting popular at the time, and dropped the references to Ozzie and Harriet being in showbiz. As a result, Ozzie had no discernible occupation.
by Anonymous | reply 239 | July 27, 2022 7:34 PM |
From all accounts, Ozzie was too busy being a huge, gigantic dickwad task master to everyone and anyone on the set, especially David and Ricky, to have given much thought to his TV occupation.

R242, from Wikipedia:
Cultural historians have noted that the on-screen laid-back character was very different from the real-life Ozzie Nelson, who has been characterized as an authoritarian figure who monitored every aspect of his children's lives.[8] In 1998, A&E broadcast a documentary entitled Ozzie and Harriet: The Adventures of America's Favorite Family, which depicted Ozzie Nelson as a dictatorial personality who "thwarted his sons, preventing them from attending college and reminding them that they were obliged to work on television".[9] Author David Halberstam has written, "the Nelsons arguably were a dysfunctional family. In real life, Ozzie was a workaholic who stole his sons' childhood (by having them grow up in show business)".

Jerry Mathers was really adorable when the show first started (and in Hitchcock's "The Trouble with Harry"), but by the time he reached puberty, it was all over for him looks-wise. He did look uncanny as an adult; still, I think the "used to be cute" face got a little better on him in later years.

Hospice used to have a particular meaning, a place people went to for end of life pain care. That meaning has changed over the last few decades but most people are unaware. I hate when people try to change the meanings of particular words for political or profit reasons, like calling the Covid vaccine an actual vaccine. Tony was in palliative care at home. His widow inadvertently made it sound like he was in an old fashioned Hospice when he was at end of life care at home. i just hate it when manipulative people try to change language for personal profit.

I don't think it's one or two. Once was enough for me with uncut. A complete turnoff. I have a friend that was cut at 27.

Different strokes for different folks, R303. Once I tasted uncut dick I never wanted to go back. I wouldn't turn a guy down because he's cut, but uncut guys always go to the... urm... head... of the line.

Goodnight, sweet prince. And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

Is Eddie Munster still alive???

If you meant Eddie Haskell, aka Ken Osmond, despite all the silly rumors of his becoming a pornstar or dying in Vietnam, he spent 18 years as a cop, had to retire after being severely injured in a shootout and went back to his Eddie Haskell role in the 1980s TV movie which lead to the revived series in which he had a featured role. He died in 2020.

E304, I certainly agree. Uncut is just not for me. We all have our turn-offs. There are plenty of both to go around.

R296 That's not Tony Dow and that cock isn't intact.

Here’s an episode of Never Too Young, the short lived soap opera that Tony did after Leave it to Beaver. Sorry for the quality. None of the episodes on YouTube seem to be good quality. He’s shirtless in swim trunks in the first 5 minutes.

[post redacted because linking to dailymail.co.uk clearly indicates that the poster is either a troll or an idiot (probably both, honestly.) Our advice is that you just ignore this poster but whatever you do, don't click on any link to this putrid rag.]

R317 The body of the guy in R290 is nothing like the Tony's body in your post. Not even close.
