“Delilah” (1968) is Tom Jones best song- I doubt anyone can name a better one
The orchestra + Tom Jones = Perfection
What a fucking amazing voice! He could SING!!! I had no idea he wasn’t American. I always thought he was American for some reason lol.
This is one of my favorite live performances from him. And he was a lot more handsome when you see him in HD! He was sweating and his waist looks tiny.
Intrigued.

The full performance. It was a medley. Delilah was his new single at the time so he performed that in it’s entirety.
What a voice. Wow. He seemed lovely.

EVERYONE knows he's WELSH.
He was very sick last week and wheeled off the stage by medics.

I never liked his songs, but I saw him on a doco about British blues and he was incredible, singing the blues. He really has quite a voice.

One of the first 45s I ever bought was Tom's power ballad "I"ll Never Fall In Love Again". But my favorite was "Love Me Tonight", which has him at his sexy, wild best.

Or if these kids ever discover this song. He will be canceled.

"It's Not Unusual" for me.
All these women wanted to throw their panties to Tom Jones. Personally, I would have preferred Tom Jones throw his bikini briefs at me.

He's great on "It's Not Unusual." He is a great singer and picks really interesting covers. He did a cover of "Situation" that I loved, for example.

Saw an interview once. IIRC he said he was a "Teddy Boy" - some style of dress/hair in the early 1960s? He worked as a door-to-door vacuum cleaner. Ah, I bet he was quite a welcome site to the housewives of the day, minding their own business, when THAT knocks on the door, asking if he can demonstrate!
He said he was told if he kept singing at that volume and intensity, he'd soon wear his voice out. He seemed particularly proud that he was still going strong (I think he was in his 50s or something during this interview)

Yes. Years ago there was a karaoke laser disc which included a live action video of a guy acting out the story of the song. It featured Kato Kaelin.
And it was done BEFORE the murders.

I recall an image of Tom Jones in one of the tabloids in the 70s. He was wearing a speedo and a sizable patch of bush appeared above the drawstring. I couldn’t get away with tearing the picture out of the tabloid, my grandmother hadn’t read it yet. The issue was thrown away by the next time we visited with her.
I still have the image in my head. Since hairy-chested men were opening their shirt buttons down to their navels at the time, maybe Jones was feeling ballsy. He certainly had no problem snaking his cock along his leg while performing in tight pants.
Then I read Welsh men were hairy, so Jones was stuck in my brain for over a decade.

Don't really know much about the Celts/Druids but Tom is swarthy, dark haired, short and stocky. Wasn't Richard Burton the same? The little Monty Python won who played the hags - Terry Jones? also an actress named Rachel Roberts who (I think) killed herself because Rex Harrison left her?
Who else is Welsh? Oh Katherine Jenkins - but she's blonde, so that breaks what I thought might be the Celtic mold. Also Charlotte Church. Anthony Hopkins?
Oh I don't know what I'm talking about. I do know that Anthony Burgess went on and on in one of his books about how sexless the British Isles were EXCEPT for the Welsh who were always at it like rabbits. Tom certainly fit that "mold".

You're right R40 - he's a dreamboat! And similar coloring to Tom and Richard (?)
You were right too R39. I didn't know Tom was 5'10 - and looking it up, Richard Burton was 5'10 as well (and Hopkins 5'9).
I guess I was thinking about Terry Jones but even he was 5'8 - but some of Monty Python's were huge - John Cleese 6'5 / Graham Chapman 6'2 / Eric Idle 6'1 - I always think of Eric introducing himself as the third tallest MP. So I think of Terry as tiny. I think part of the reason they looked so funny in drag is how big they were, though Eric and Michael Palin did better at passing (I guess).

Found this is quora but don't know the accuracy:
Wales as I understand was the last bastion of the Romano-Celts who once occupied Britain up to Hadrian’s wall. The first influence I would guess would be the Roman one: dark-haired/olive skinned. Also the native Celts such as they were might have been darker than Germans and Danes, and other light-skinned ethnic groups that invaded and reinvaded Britain between the withdraw of Rome and 1066. From what I understand the first inhabitants of Britain post ice age were, ‘Indo-Europeans.’ The most undiluted example of this type is in the Basque Region, and they have similar characteristics Dark hair, Dark eyes, Darker skin. My grandmother was German, English, French and Welsh. She was very white with blue eyes and jet black hair. I can’t say for certain that the dark hair came from her Welsh ancestry, but I wouldn’t be surprised

My partner was considered "Black-Irish". Both sides of his family came from Ireland, but he had dark, dark brown hair and a hairy body. Allegedly the Moors who conquered Spain traded with the Celts and left their seed behind.

That song bothers me R59. Implies that old trope that women can be divided into ladies vs worthless tramps. And what's this shit about knowing her place in the first verse:
Well she's all you'd ever want, She's the kind they'd like to flaunt and take to dinner. Well she always knows her place. She's got style, she's got grace, She's a winner.

R60 - I agree, but have always wanted to write a set of anti-lyrics to that song, praising the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with the refrain: "She's OUR LADY! Whoa, whoa, whoa, She's OUR LADY!!"

R62 but there's some pathological implications of viewing women either as pure virginal angelic creatures and dirty nasty pieces of garbage. Like women have to be one or the other. There's a name for it I can't remember - madonna/whore complex?
It's sick. And very very demeaning. Thus, "she always knows her place". (like sitting prettily with her mouth shut about anything important, a trophy on his arm - fuck you, Paul Anka, you're an old misogynist ugly asshole - or maybe dead? hope that 'type' is disappearing as we speak)
