Dave Coulier also inspired "No Scrubs"

He's so blah. I knew that "You Oughta Know" was about him, but not "No Scrubs".

Over the years, there were some rumors about “No Scrubs” being about the behavior of one person in particular. In 2020, the two surviving members of TLC confirmed that, as some people had come to believe, the song is about Full House’s Dave Coulier. During an interview in which she was accompanied by Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins, Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas spoke about the moment that inspired “No Scrubs”.

“One day we’re out walking, and [Coulier] and Stamos come driving by, and you know, Coulier leans out and tries to holler at us from the passenger side of the car. To be honest, I didn’t know who he was at first — I just saw a bunch of hair and a bright, patterned shirt, but then it clicked and I was like, ‘Is that that corny mother***er, Uncle Joey?’ So I started jotting down some lines, and the rest is history. He was talking like Popeye for some reason, and had this beaver puppet… that part didn’t make it in the song.”

During a HuffPost Live interview, Dave Coulier talked about realizing that “You Oughta Know” was about him after one lyric in particular. “We had already broken up… She called and I said, ‘Hey, you know, I’m right in the middle of dinner. Can I just call you right back?’ When I heard the line, it was like, ‘uh-oh,’”

Given that Dave Coulier likely inspired both “No Scrubs” and “You Oughta Know”, it makes sense that Bob Saget has claimed that he has advised his pal to change. “I tried to tell him he should probably stop dating musicians, but he wouldn’t listen. I mean, there’s already one immortal song dedicated to calling you a piece of s**t, so maybe you should cut your losses. I never understood why he’s always been eager to take credit for ‘You Oughta Know.’ Like, buddy, did you listen to the lyrics?”

This is fucking news to me

Poor Uncle Joey. He can't catch a break. I read where he once had one eye in the mirror as he watched himself gavotte.

Dave Coulier looks pretty good for a 62-year-old. I always thought he was sexy af to look at because I like blond Midwestern all-American types, but I couldn't get past the dumb-idiot persona (which may or may not be real ... I have no idea).

But didn't Kandi Burruss and Tiny write "No Scrubs"?

by Anonymousreply 4July 16, 2022 12:44 AM

Here is handsome but apparently obnoxious Dave in younger days.

Posting an imdb image to see if it will show. I hate this fucking "Offsite Image" BS.

R4 I thought Kandi wrote the song about some guy Tiny was dating at the time… maybe it was Uncle Joey.

Any truth to the rumor that John Lennon had Dave Coulier in mind when he wrote Sexy Sadie?

by Anonymousreply 7July 16, 2022 12:50 AM

Lmfao. I can believe this.

by Anonymousreply 8July 16, 2022 12:51 AM

The second verse of "You're So Vain" is also about Dave Coolyay.

by Anonymousreply 9July 16, 2022 12:53 AM

'Careful With That Axe, Eugene' was totally based on Dave Coulier.

by Anonymousreply 10July 16, 2022 1:06 AM

I think that's a parody site

by Anonymousreply 11July 16, 2022 1:28 AM

How is this lump getting such high quality tail? It’s confusing.

by Anonymousreply 12July 16, 2022 1:33 AM

Dave Coulier fucked your dad, dude!

by Anonymousreply 13July 16, 2022 1:56 AM

Coulier has a long history as a song-inspiration. Blue Oyster Cult's "Don't Fear the Reaper" as well as The Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil." And is there any need to mention Charlene's greatest hit, "I've Never Been to Me."

He also inspired Pebbles’ Girlfriend.

Additionally, the Electric Slide song is about a vibrator.

by Anonymousreply 15July 16, 2022 2:06 AM

Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas also wrote Rhapsody in Blue after meeting Joey Luft.

by Anonymousreply 16July 16, 2022 2:07 AM

Few people know this, but Coulier was the original inspiration for the Dudley Do-Right character from Rocky and Bullwinkle.

Don't forget the photo of the grassy knoll in Dallas in 1963, and right in the middle was Dave Coulier.

by Anonymousreply 18July 16, 2022 3:08 AM

Dave Coulier was D.B. Cooper.

by Anonymousreply 19July 16, 2022 3:09 AM

Only Lisa Lopez is credited on No Scrubs due to her wrap. No on else in TLC wrote a line for the song.

R11 Yeah, if you click through the source is The Hard Times, a satire site.

Did Coulier date Beck too?

Dave Coulier threw the first brick at Stonewall.

by Anonymousreply 23July 16, 2022 3:41 AM

This would be hilarious if true...I think everyone knows by now that Kandi Burruss wrote it and most people know it was intended for Britney Spears before TLC got it.

by Anonymousreply 24July 16, 2022 4:33 AM

[quote] The song was written by producer Kevin "She'kspere" Briggs, former Xscape members Kandi Burruss and Tameka "Tiny" Cottle, and TLC member Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes. The song lyrics describe the role of a man in a relationship. Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas sings the lead vocals for the first time on a TLC song.

According to Wikipedia. Kandi and Tameka / Tiny, Left Eye, and another person wrote the song. Chilli did the vocals.

Why was he talking like Popeye? That's hilarious.

He is such a liar. It is a well-documented fact that Khandi and I were at Fred Segal chatting at the jeans bar when some stock boy kept hitting on me. He was so obnoxious I finally said, "No, I don't want your number! And I'm not giving you mine!" He was all, "Don't player hate!" I laughed and said, "You aren't a player, you're not even on the bench! You're a SCRUB!" Khandi whipped out her Palm Pilot and started taking notes furiously.
