Stevie Nicks wrote “Silver Springs” to "haunt" Lindsey Buckingham
“We were sailing along on the highest wave. It was OK for a while, until it wasn’t. At the end of 1976, that’s when it just blew up,” Nicks later told Billboard. It all started to fall apart just as they were making their opus, Rumours, and the album depicts the breakdown of their personal lives.
One song that didn’t make the album’s final cut is ‘Silver Springs’, which was replaced on the record’s final cut by ‘I Don’t Want To Know’, much to the frustration of Nicks. On the track, she tries to seek revenge upon Buckingham to haunt her former beau. In ‘Silver Springs’, Nicks sings: “I know I could’ve loved you, but you would not let me, I’ll follow you down ’til the sound of my voice will haunt you”.
“I wrote ‘Silver Springs’ about Lindsey. And we were in Maryland somewhere driving under a freeway sign that said Silver Springs, Maryland,” she once admitted. “And I loved the name…Silver Springs sounded like a pretty fabulous place to me. And ‘You could be my silver springs’, that’s just a whole symbolic thing of what you could have been to me.”
Meanwhile, in a 2009 interview with Rolling Stone, Nicks revealed she wanted Buckinham to suffer the same pain as her. She said: “It was me realizing that Lindsey was going to haunt me for the rest of my life, and he has.”
The song was eventually released as the B-side for ‘Go Your Own Way’, and even though they are no longer on speaking terms, ‘Silver Springs’ is concrete proof of how much Buckingham meant to Nicks once upon a time.

It's crazy how damaged some people can be (mostly women) for something that happened going on 50 years ago. My mother is the same way. My parents were going through a nasty divorce around the same time, right after I was born. My mother absolutely never recovered or found true love again, no relationships that I ever knew off. It is a sad heavy burden that just becomes who you are. And my brother and I have ended up carrying that sadness as well for ourselves and for our father and mother our entire lives.

It was cuntish Christine McVie who forbade that track on the album. She knew how good it was.

"...I'll follow you down till the sound of my voice will haunt you..." Is actually pretty darn harsh now that I think about it.

I love Fleetwood Mac but damn, am I tired of Stevie Nicks raking the long-dead coals of her relatively brief relationship with Lindsey. That is, when she isn't acting like Tom Petty's widow.

Beautiful song and a mistake for not including it on Rumours.

They were completely right not putting it on Rumours. They didn't need yet another "instense" 5-minute break up song. The songs would've started blending into one another. I Don't Want To Know is good song that keeps the album flowing. They also needed a more upbeat song from Stevie.
Personally, I don't even think the recorded version of SS is that great.

That interview isn't new. It's a hodge podge of interviews over the years - not like she's just stating this as some new story.

Thank you, r13. Online magazines write new articles with old material all the time, but that seems to confuse most posters on here.

This whole inspiration is so funny and weird to me.
It's Silver Spring, Maryland. A body of water, a spring, that looks silver when it shimmers. Silver spring.
And she seems to still think after all these years that someone named a town in Maryland after, what, a vat of silver coils?

R4: where did you hear that about Christine? I always heard Mick told Stevie it couldn’t go on the album as it was too long and wouldn’t fit (back in the day when records were limited by song length), not because the song itself wasn’t wanted by anyone.

R16 I think you're retarded. She has described the town, and clearly referenced that it just sounded lovely. She obviously knew/knows it's named after a body of water.

I love that clip from The Dance at r5. Stevie looks fabulous and she sings it at Lindsey the way she always intended-“fuck you, you’ll never get over me.”
You can also see in that clip why the band didn’t want it on the album. Imagine the drama if Stevie had sung that at him every night like that for two years on tour. They probably would have broken up.

I Don't Want to Know is a great fucking song. So is Silver Springs, but as mentioned upthread, it's another dirge, and there were plenty of dirges on Rumors.

It’s just that “Silver Springs” shows a vulnerability rather like Molly Shannon’s Catholic school girl character.
It helps me side with Stevie when she’s kicking fans in the cunt bone. I often wonder if moth are just part of their manipulative charms.

Yes, the town in Maryland is called "Silver Spring," not Silver Springs.
I think I'll go and listen to the song, now.
IMO, it's a better song than "I don't wanna know."

If you’ve ever seen Stevie and Lindsay on stage together with Fleetwood Mac the electricity between them and in the entire venue changes when they do this song. The chemistry/negativity is palpable.

It’s a great song and “follow you down till the sound of my voice will haunt you” is a powerful lyric. It might not have been right for Rumours.

It's a terrific song but I also think it was probably the right call to leave it off "Rumours." It's of a similar tempo and structure as "Gold Dust Woman" and the rear part of the album really needs the energy boost that "I Don't Wanna Know" provides.

I listened to it today for the first time in a long time.
It's a long, long build-up to "Time cast a spell on you, but you won't forget me," which is the chorus where you can hear Christine McVie and Buckingham.
Long build-up, but that chorus is amazing.

Go Your own way,Song Bird, then Silver Spring. My top 3 favorite Mac songs. I like very many others, but these are the ones I still listen to constantly. R48 Is Stevie's assistant Karen.
R48- Read any of Stevie's reactions to tragedies in the last 20 years-
EVERYTHING is about HER.
The Roe Vs Wade shit was hilarious. Truly the best.
She is an egotist and a supremely sad woman.
Her last single was a JOKE. What was that one about? How everything since Martin Luther King affects Stevie. It was HILARIOUS. She is a lost soul.

Who among us are the same people we were 30-40 years ago ? People change as they get older, sometimes better, sometimes worse. Stevie has always been deeply self involved, but lets not forget that at one point she was pretty much a superstar and quite a pretty lady. Of course she was self involved ! Show me a mega star that isnt .

R50- You are a sweetheart. I respect what you said and I do agree 100%..
I was a serious Stevie fan until 2015 or so.. And I slowly started to despise her- as a person.. ( Idiscovered her way late- around 1996? Went to around 3 shows on that Enchanted Tour in 1998 and was a diehard)
Love her music- (Her voice from 79-83- was truly otherworldly) And I dig The Wild Heart- the entire album- don't know why-
But her ego- its really, really, messed up.

[quote]Imagine the drama if Stevie had sung that at him every night like that for two years on tour.
Yet they sang "Go Your Own Way," in which Lindsey claims "Shackin' up's all you wanna do." Stevie has called that song hurtful yet performs it anyway, so why shouldn't whiny bitchface Lindsey do the same?

If they had to leave off SS from the album, they could have at least included the version of Oh Daddy that had Stevie singing backing vocals.

R53, thanks for linking that. I quite enjoyed it but must say that I think prefer the album version. Stevie went a bit too big and I prefer Chris and Lindsay’s voices blended on that song. Related, I love Oh Daddy and was surprised to see it come in for some criticism on this thread. To me it’s a song with a happy ending, the joyful Never Forget from Tusk.

Stevie: I would have said to you on a Bible, it wasn't hurting my voice. It was totally hurting my voice! I mean the stories have already been everywhere about my nose. I have a huge hole in my nose, which is affecting me now. It affects my voice now. Chris: What is the hole in your nose from? Stevie: From snorting cocaine, cuz it's like Ajax; it just ate right through my nose.
