Here’s my take on all of this. Leah is very, very good at singing the songs from Funny Girl. She may or may not have the acting chops to handle the role, but from her appearances on Glee I think she should be OK. Beanie Feldstein was miscast right from the beginning. It was a gamble, and maybe if she had a really good voice it could have worked. Fanny Brice as a historical character was not overweight and was always dressed elegantly in any photos that exist of her. You put those kind of clothes on Beanie Feldstein and she looks like a 1920s mother of the bride. The show should do well with Leah, but they owe it to the audience to improve this cheap jack production. Fanny supposedly starts out at rinky-dink Dancehall and then goes on to the Ziegfeld Follies. The Follies in this production look no different than the Dancehall number and having show girls strutting around in bridal costumes doesn’t cut it. And let’s get rid of the big trash dumpster in the middle of the stage that keeps opening and closing to reveal the scenery.

by Anonymousreply 81July 17, 2022 4:48 PM

R19, I wasn't overly impressed, either. Yes, she's got a pair of pipes but the performance seemed a little... she was just showing off her pipes. Doing better than Beanie is a low bar and she will certainly be able to sing it... will she be able to anything other than belt?

Listen, it’s not like the penultimate number is about Fanny getting on a Best Dressed list. Her wardrobe improving is a symbol of her career improving. It’s not celebrating her personal style.

My grandmother loved Brice as Baby Snooks (a low vaudeville turn) not as some style icon. That was Kaye Francis.

by Anonymousreply 111September 24, 2022 9:18 PM

We'll see how long it lasts. Beanie did well at the box office initially...

by Anonymousreply 112September 24, 2022 9:20 PM

Beanie Feldstein very quickly showed she was in over her head vocally. When that word spread fast, it left only Booksmart/Lady Bird fans who simply like Feldstein personally and wanted to see her, as well as (some overlap with the aforementioned) the body-positivity crowd who wanted to support the idea of a larger woman in a starring role. And, I guess, people who just very badly wanted to see Funny Girl on Broadway, even a lackluster Funny Girl.

What we have now is not really an equivalent situation. Lea Michele has her stans from the Glee days, but mostly, people are eager to get in because they think she can tear up this part. By most accounts she's doing that.

Perhaps the director has reigned her in. In the videos of opening night, it may even be that the keys have been lowered (or maybe they were just raised for Glee). She doesn't seem to strain as much in the high notes as before--in fact the high notes don't seem so high as before

by Anonymousreply 123September 30, 2022 2:26 PM

Oh please R121. Michael Mayer had nothing to do with her vocal performance. She’s matured as a singer and sings the role much differently than she did on Glee.

I’m not a tourist R122 and I have every intention of going to see one of the most difficult roles on Broadway actually get pulled off exceedingly well by a voice type that no longer exists on Broadway.

by Anonymousreply 133October 1, 2022 2:17 AM

Feldstein had goodwill on her side (besides powerful backers). There was a perception that the public liked her, and she had had a success in a supporting role on Broadway. It seems in retrospect that everyone should have realized the starring role in Funny Girl was a bridge too far, but I think those involved in the production hoped she could finesse her way through on a combination of comedic skill, appealing onstage personality, and singing the music "well enough." Didn't happen, obviously. The clock was ticking from the moment the reviews came in.

by Anonymousreply 137October 1, 2022 3:00 AM

by Anonymousreply 138October 1, 2022 3:01 AM

Fuck off and give it a rest already r138. There were even some reviews that mentioned that was a fear of theirs when reviewing, but it wasnt a reality. She does not imitate Barbra, and they noted as such.

by Anonymousreply 139October 1, 2022 3:04 AM

The question isn't whether there are other talented women, but whether they're talented, box-office draws, and willing/able to commit to a run of Funny Girl. Julie Benko is talented.
