Thoughts & prayers. If I see it, I immediately wish death upon that person and curse their next of kin through all living relatives. I kid, but not really. Nothing worse than that phrase and how offensive it has become.

I have to will myself to find things I may have in common with them as I try to understand what our new normal is. We *have* to be willing to find common ground, no matter how painful it is. We have to lead by example, and we need real leaders who can model how to talk about peace and love with people who are different than us. There IS some common ground, we need to start there. But it’s easier said than done because another choice might be that we don’t try to build bridges? I don’t know. I need to learn more about how Germany dealt with post-WW2. Did Germany “re-integrate” former Nazis and their family back into society at all? My gut is we need to follow what was done by the Germans.

R152 That one bothers me as well. As if they randomly pulled out of a box some snap on parts, shortly after delivery.. I support trans, yet having a medical background, this is a rubbish statement. Rather, sex is "observed and recorded" at birth. That should suffice, regardless of one's feelings about transpeople.

by Anonymousreply 158July 16, 2022 1:26 AM

It's a clinical term previously only used for intersex children. Trans activists have made it a general term to describe everyone because it inherently posits the possibility that your sex was assigned incorrectly, which "sex observed at birth" does not.

by Anonymousreply 159July 16, 2022 1:39 AM

R159 I'm not certain of the US, but in the UK, the phrase is "observed and recorded". Your point makes sense about that other phrase being reserved for intersex births, where it is ambiguous. I suspect for those cases of ambiguous genitalia, they ought to record "intersex" or "undetermined" until a genetic test can be performed.

It doesn't make me stop listening, exactly, but it kind of clangs when I hear people say "It was so fun" instead of "It was so much fun."

If "fun" is going to be used as an adjective, I prefer it come right before the noun it modifies. I realize this is not considered grammatically incorrect any longer, and that more people say "It was so fun" than "it was so much fun."

by Anonymousreply 174July 18, 2022 12:23 AM

R173 totally agree with that. Millennials love that word.

Basically to them, if they aren't allowed to do whatever they want, you are robbing them of their "agency" and thus making them unable to thrive.

My pet peeve is "space."

About ten years ago, everything became a space. In some instances, I can see how this usage is necessary, but most of the time it's not.

Instead of a classroom, it's a "learning space."

Instead of a dining room or restaurant, it's a "dining space."

Instead of a house, it's a "living space."

And of course, it's assumed a figurative meaning, as in "create a space for dialogue" or "queer spaces" or "male spaces" etc.

When people say 'the album is dropping' or I'll drop you a message'; from fucking where?

'slide into my DMs'

'you got this'

'going forward'

'at the end of the day'

'there's' instead of 'there're'

by Anonymousreply 183July 24, 2022 9:04 PM

R183 'The first records of the idiom drop a line come from around the 1640s. It comes from the use of drop meaning “to write and send,” referencing the dropping of a letter into a mailbox, and the use of line meaning “a short written message.” '

My biggest pet peeve is how some words are used now, like how everything is “iconic”. No. Chappell Whatever is not iconic. If she’s still around in 30 years, maybe. Also how people call anything they’re selling that is used “vintage”. No, something you bought brand new a couple years ago is not vintage.
