It's strange to me that Joan had B.D. on her show at all around this time. Joan lived for her career and for Melissa (and later for her grandson Cooper), and Melissa abandoned her for a while after Joan's husband killed himself. I'd think this interview would be hard for Joan, to even think about a daughter of a celebrity doing this kind of thing to her mother, and even to wonder potentially if her own daughter may harbor this sort of resentment. I bet Joan and Melissa had some long talks about this interview.

To Melissa's credit, she has been as loyal to Joan after Joan's death as Joan was to her when Joan was alive. They were soul mates.

Melissa was on the board of a nonprofit I worked for many years ago, and she seemed like a decent person. She made inappropriate jokes about sensitive topics related to the nature of the nonprofit that were not funny in public forums and seemed to have little self-awareness that she wasn't funny like her mother was, but she was committed and came across as having good intentions. B.D., on the other hand, seems like a humorless monster.

I am rewatching Feud: Bette and Joan and in it, Bette initially was very upset the male costar in Baby Jane was 'a homosexual' and wanted him fired, but she came around to respecting his acting. He told her he loves her and she snapped, "Of course you do. All the queens love me."

We know Katharine Hepburn was mannish and always wore pants and was bisexual if not a lesbian, and she addressed homosexuality in this interview, but she also brought it up in a kind of disapproving way. She sort of defends it as natural, due to "overpopulation," but she still presented it with an air of disapproval.

Remember that both Bette and Katharine were brought up in a Puritan tradition and they were born in 1908 and 1907, respectively.

Looking back at her movies from the 30s and 40s, it is really outstanding that Hepburn almost always wore pants in her films and her character was usually masculine. If she were coming of age today, I suspect she would be an outspoken LGBT activist if not gender fluid or transgender. She's one of the few people who never self-identified as transgender but who just kind of seems like she should have.

Bette supported her mother, her mentally ill sister, and of course BD and BD's useless husband. She spent a fortune on all of them, and didn't have a lot left over for herself. She could've been a very wealthy woman if not for her support of her family.

I read BD's book years ago and it's ridiculous. Bette was not an abusive mother like Joan Crawford was. She drank too much and could be overbearing and overly involved in her children's lives but she was no different from millions of other mothers. It's actually an echo of my life. My grandmother was the most doting and wonderful Grandma in the world until I hit puberty. She completely changed her attitude toward me, and would slight me in ways like sending my sister $100 for her birthday and me $5. She would cheat with my sister when we played games so that I would lose and then laugh. It was really alarming to be rejected by my grandmother like that. It caused a major rift between us and between my mom and her mother for years. The year before she died, my grandmother told me her first husband was gay and she always hated him, but now she finally realizes he couldn't live his own life and that he only hurt her because he had no way to live his life freely. On her deathbed, the last thing she said to any of us was to call me over and squeeze me and tell me she has always been proud of me and she loves me. Then we left and she died.

This personal history with my grandmother makes me want to think BD finally drew the line with her mother because she hurt her son. But then there's that whole BD-turned-out-to-be-a-psycho thing.

Yes, BD was quite contradictory in her interviews. There's one from 1989 where she insists she wrote the book in an attempt to reconcile with her mother and this was the only way of communicating with her and being listened to, and in another interview a couple of years later she claims she wrote the book in order to get her mother out of her life. She also said in one interview that Bette was never abusive and she had an idyllic childhood, then she claimed otherwise in a different interview. Perhaps BD is mentally ill and a pathological liar. Could be genetics, or maybe Bette's violent marriages traumatically affected BD (and Bette and BD didn't realize it).

Joan Rivers had Bing Crosby's and Frank Sinatra's sons on to talk about how horribly abusive they were. Crosby's son said his father was ashamed of him being overweight, and he weighed him every week, beat him if he was over his goal weight, and ultimately hired a doctor to drug him with amphetamines, which led to lifelong drug addiction. That's at least as fucked up as what Joan allegedly did, although a bit short of transforming into the devil. 🙄

Frank Sinatra has a legacy that's about on par with Joan and Bette, but I wouldn't say Bing does. I was born in 1978, after all their careers were basically over, and Crosby is the only one I know almost nothing about. So it's not a surprise to me that his story is no Mommie Dearest. The only people who seem to care much that Joan was abusive today are a lot of gay men and some women, and only because Mommie Dearest is so campy and people see it as humorous. So the real way Joan has been demonized in the public eye is the way she's been mocked and turned into a caricature. And Bette—I would bet most people have never heard she was allegedly abusive. Bette continued to work even after all of her illnesses. She looked ancient and her speech was affected by the stroke, but she kept plugging along.

Bette's stroke was caused by alcohol withdrawal, when she was still in the hospital recovering from her mastectomy. It could've been easily prevented if the hospital staff were aware that she was a decades-long alcoholic and at very high risk for going into withdrawal. It was completely avoidable if the proper precautions had been taken.
