Ons team
and NK team
by Anonymous | reply 1 | July 8, 2022 6:18 PM |
Ons and Kyrgios. I really don't like either Kyrgios or Djokovic, but just to mix it up at this wacky Wimbledon.
"Ons JabeUUUR." "THank you, Ms. JabeUUUR." Great John Houseman name.

Anyone who says they want Prick to win needs to take a step back from their own crazy.
You do not seriously want him to have 'Wimbledon Champion' next to his name for the rest of eternity.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | July 8, 2022 6:21 PM |
R4, I'd rather see that than #21 next to a certain other player.

Are you talking about Kyrgios or Djokovic?

Felix's most recent tweet somewhat redeems his dismal Wimby showing.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | July 8, 2022 6:29 PM |
Ons Jabeur and I dont give a fuck about the mens match. They are both clowns.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | July 8, 2022 6:30 PM |
I'm grateful that Jabeur got married before her lesbianism became an issue at home. And by home I mean that her brothers and father don't have to murder her. Whew!
by Anonymous | reply 10 | July 8, 2022 6:47 PM |
Ons looks considerably less dykey (but still dykey) off court - like a thick, plain brunette who would date Black guys in America. Maybe she's not a lesbian, or maybe it's a marriage of convenience - he looks like he'd be a good gay. Lol. If she is a lesbian, who is her secret WTA tour lover, per the Lifetime Movie?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | July 8, 2022 6:54 PM |
They’re all lesbians. All of them!
by Anonymous | reply 12 | July 8, 2022 6:56 PM |
As a palate cleanser, here's Gustavo Fernandez, actual hottest man on tour who sadly lost his semi today :(
by Anonymous | reply 13 | July 8, 2022 7:16 PM |
Ons is a terrific person by all accounts.
Especially as we are heading into a men’s final clash between Worse and Worser, we should treasure having a good one to root for.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | July 8, 2022 7:17 PM |
As for the men’s final, here are my thoughts.
I was Djokovic fan before he became an anti-vaxxer. My respect for him is now gone.
That said, would I rather he, an asshole, won? Or if someone with no respect for the game and his competitors won? (and no respect for his GF’s wellbeing, allegedly.)
Edge to Djokovic.

If Nick wins, I think he might cry and if he lost, he might cry too.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | July 8, 2022 7:35 PM |
I concede that Novak will go down as the best ever. I think it's Rafa. Hands down. But stats don't lie.
Novak will have more slams than Rafa eventually, already has a massive amount of more weeks at number one (a totally useless stat, imo, other than to help seed tournaments, but it is highly values by others), YE number ones (a stat with much greater importance), etc.
But no way in hell is he a good enough grass courter to have 7 Wimbys. Last year was a joke. So is this year (and he'll destroy Nick). Stupid Fed BLEW 2019. Fed also blew a couple more earlier in Novak's career.
No one thinks Novak is as good on grass as Sampras. And Sunday he will tie him for titles.
Who would have thought, 20 years ago, that Wimby would be the slam with the least value?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | July 8, 2022 7:35 PM |
For the first time, men's wheelchair and doubles might make for more attractive matches. They'll probably have the wheelchair final on a larger court than previous years, especially because there's a Brit, Hewett, in the final. They were on No. 1 today for the semi, and Hewett said that was a last minute decision the night before. Disability sport usually pales in comparison to the able-bodied counterpart, but, genuinely, wheelchair tennis is entertaining and impressive. I'm thankful they might get the bigger courts for a final because it really was appalling having them on tiny courts in previous years - I understand there's a lot of traffic even at this end of the championships - but still.
And I do like Mektic and Pavic - don't know what the DL consensus is on them - but from the little I've seen of them on and off court they seem very likable - and I do love a Croatian!

I think the grass of Novak's era is a little different than that of Pete's, though. More like a hard court.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | July 8, 2022 8:43 PM |
They've been screwing with the grass almost constantly since the early 2000s. Wimbledon was as slow as red clay the years that Nadal managed to win it.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | July 8, 2022 8:51 PM |
You're insane if you think the grass in 2008 was as slow as Roland Garros, R23.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | July 8, 2022 10:01 PM |
They only changed the grass once. It was a fairly substantial change that made it, generally, somewhat slower (but by no means "slow) and higher bouncing (but not "high" bouncing) than the previous grass. But, it's still grass and still substantially different from hard courts and clay. And even previous era-Wimbledon the grass could play like a hard court once it got worn down and if it was warm and it got dried out. Both before and after the they changed the grass mixture, grass courts require particular movement (especially first week when it's slicker and the brown patches haven't shown up) and ability to deal with never fully secure footing. Plus, there will always be the uneven, erratic bounces that you'd never see on a hard court.

by Anonymous | reply 27 | July 8, 2022 10:56 PM |
Whatever else you think of Novak, his game is absolute perfection. He's like a machine, technically perfect and efficient groundstrokes with perfect posture. Also, the insance arrogance that got him kicked out of Australia is the same arrogance that won him that final against Federer in 2019.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | July 8, 2022 11:07 PM |
You're right, R28. He has a flawless game.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | July 8, 2022 11:16 PM |
he won't be at the US open so that's good.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | July 8, 2022 11:17 PM |
That's also the arrogance that will keep him away from another Slam until May 2023. And time is not on his side. It'll be nice to see him decline.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | July 8, 2022 11:18 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 33 | July 9, 2022 12:09 AM |
They won't allow Russians to play, but trash like Nick Kyrgios is allowed in.
The mens final will be a 90 minute shitshow because Nick won't feel like playing.
So fucking sick of this slam.
I'm still holding out hope that Borat makes an appearence if Elena Rybakina wins.

Thanks, R26. Great summary.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | July 9, 2022 1:47 AM |
lmao it's the men's final that the ATP deserves. I hope it's a fucking shitshow. I'll laugh so hard to see the snooty Wimby elites crying about their precious court being defiled with "royals" there. The state of the men's game has been shit for years now and I'm sick of Wimbledon's arrogance
obviously Novaxx Djocovid is the favorite but I won't be surprised Kyrgios pulls off the win, then parties for a weeks back home before the legal drama keeps him out of the USO and he retires
Hoping for Jabeur to make history in the ladies' final but Rybakina is the favorite if she plays like she did against Halep especially with that serve. She's playing how Pliskova should have played in the last few years but blew it
by Anonymous | reply 36 | July 9, 2022 6:24 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 37 | July 9, 2022 6:30 AM |
Djokovic will get pissed if the crowd backs Kyrgios especially if Kyrgios hits an "oh my god" exhibition style winner
you just know Djokovic is thinking to himself he should be more popular than Kyrgios
by Anonymous | reply 38 | July 9, 2022 6:34 AM |
R34 They won't allow Russians to play but a Muscovite is in the womans final and a cut of her prize money will go straight to Putin's war. She still trains at the Spartak club in Moscow lol. This has actually been such a mess of a slam - from that Serena shitfest on day one, to the domestic violence charges for the mens finalist, to the Rafa withdrawal and the crowd being forced to watch womens doubles, and especially Pam Shriver dancing to an off-key Cliff Richards.
Hopefully Jabeur can at least give us some positive news in the final. And while I respect Djokovic's game, it's very monotonous and defensive. An incredible player yes, but I got more excitement this year watching Pierce vs Bartoli in the legends doubles...
by Anonymous | reply 39 | July 9, 2022 10:36 AM |
Old grass courts were boring as hell. Those Sampras-Ivanisevic finals were ace after ace after ace.
And people are really crazy if they think Novak and Rafa wouldn't win Wimbledon in the 90's when Andre Agassi won it. Yes, Nole won't be a dominant force, but he will manage to win a couple of times at least
by Anonymous | reply 40 | July 9, 2022 11:19 AM |

R38 Nole does a lot better when the crowed is against him. He feeds himself with the hate, that's his strength. The only single time he was the massively beloved crowd's fave was at the US Open last year for making the Calender Slam and he was paralyzed by pressure and fear and flopped.

by Anonymous | reply 44 | July 9, 2022 12:01 PM |
r42, Exactly, he doesn't even do well in Belgrade, the only place he is beloved. Plus, center court is always well behaved. It's Kyrgios who insists on acting like a petulant teenager. He knows he could have been defaulted in the first round and instead of acting grateful he chooses to aggravate everyone on purpose. I'm hoping for a 5 hour marathon of the best tennis we've ever seen.
If Kyrgios acts like an asshole, he'll hear about it and I can't imagine how he'd handle shouts of "Go home and beat your girlfriend".
by Anonymous | reply 45 | July 9, 2022 12:29 PM |
I think it will depend of how Djokovic starts the match. If he is focused Kyrgios will implode.
Kyrgios fans think he is like the second coming, that he is unbeatable when he is focused when the truth is he is an obviously talented player but with a mediocre backhand, and not physically or mentally strong
by Anonymous | reply 46 | July 9, 2022 12:55 PM |
R17 Rafa has year end no. 1 pretty much wrapped up. He has no summer points to defend, so if he just makes semis at USO, and wins a few other tournaments no one can catch him.
Given the lax Covid standards now, the US looks kind of silly banning the non vaxxed. I know someone on their 3rd round of Covid, and his workplace didn't ask him to stay home or to isolate himself at work. He got only 1 vaccine shot.

Rybakina seems like a nice enough woman, but if she wins this (born and trains in Moscow), this is going to make a mockery of this Wimbledon's Russian 'ban'.
All it will take is a Kyrgios win and it's a total dumpster fire.

The ban is for players playing under Russia's flag, not ethnic Russians. It's stupid, but the standard is clear, so I don't see how this makes a mockery of the ban - beyond all the reasons it was already mockable.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | July 9, 2022 3:52 PM |
Hilarious that basically a Russian player wins after the ban. She represents Kazakhstan but is actually Russian.

I've set my eyes on Rybakina since her breakthrough during lockdowns in 2020. I like her old school Russian-Kazakh game. Was disappointed in her later seasons, especially that atrocious loss to Svitolina at the Olympics. I would have never imagined to see her winning Wimbledon this year.

There should be a citizenship requirement for representing a country. Like how Osaka, who is very much an American, is a Japanese citizen and chooses to represent Japan. It’s a little unseemly to just wear the flag of your highest bidder.

Wimbledon never banned Russian players, even if that was printed over and over. It banned players representing Russia. There's a difference. The ban was still ridiculous but I don't think Rybakina winning is quite the "gotcha" moment that people are making it out to be.
by Anonymous | reply 100 | July 9, 2022 7:16 PM |
The double standards are incredible. R88 I bet you do the same thing for "Spanish" Davidovich Fokina, "American" Anisimova or Tiafoe or "Colombian" Farah, right? You either always believe in ethnic nationalism or always believe in civic nationalism. She naturalized Kazakhstani for her career because Russian were neglecting her. You queens would have gotten the Saudi citizenship to be a multi millionaire tennis star. Hypocrites.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | July 9, 2022 7:18 PM |
Exactly. This was a political decision so it's the flag that matters because countries regularly use sport to promote their nation (the reason why so many countries try to buy players from other nations).
Em Rad was born in Canada. Romanian dad. Chinese mother. Grew up in the UK. There are so many players with mixed elements like that.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | July 9, 2022 7:22 PM |
Agree about the double standards, R101, but Anisamova or Tiafoe as examples? They were both born and raised in America and never played for any other country.

MUZZA'S PAIN ‘This really hurts’ – Andy Murray’s heartbreaking post after beloved dog ‘Maggie Mayhem’ dies during Wimbledon fortnight
Murray and his wife Kim have had Maggie, who was affectionately nicknamed “Maggie Mayhem” by the couple, back in 2008.
The pair, parents to four children, also added another dog named Rusty to their family in 2011.
The two border terriers became huge hits with his fans too after a Twitter account was created by the tennis legend in their honour.
However, now Murray and his loved-ones are mourning the loss of Maggie after he broke the devastating news to his social media followers last night.
Along with photos of him cuddling Maggie and a cute one of the pup lying down, he wrote: “Today our family said goodbye to this amazing little dog. She was a huge part of our family and our first pet so this really hurts.
“Give your pets a big cuddle tonight cause it stings when you can’t anymore. Thanks Maggie Mayhem you were an absolute star.”

"It banned players representing Russia." - What a crock, r100. As has been said over and over, players do not represent their countries at Wimbledon or all tennis matches aside from the few team matches and the Olympics. Serbia doesn't "win" whenever Djokovic wins. The Serbian national anthem is not played when he receives the trophy.
by Anonymous | reply 110 | July 9, 2022 9:15 PM |
Sad for Jabeur but her level really dipped after the first set which isn't surprising. She has been a real headcase in finals
Rybakina played awful in the first set and then raised her level for the rest of the match so the win is deserved. Yes, it's definitely an opportunity for Russian nationalists to troll Wimbledon. Rybakina was born in Russia and still lives there so she's Russian just playing under a different flag. If she had moved to Kazakhstan it would be different.
R101 Tiafoe, Anisimova and Davidovich Fokina are not valid examples. They were all born in and still live in the countries they play for. Most posters here aren't talking about Rybakina being an ethnic Russian but rather someone who lives in Russia despite playing for another country
Osaka for example is American who plays for Japan. Yes she's half Japanese and Haitian but we know her life is in the US. She's still learning to speak Japanese. The USTA was quite foolish to turn her down but it can be hard to predict in the juniors who's going to be a great pro player.

R111 Russia cant really take credit for her success though. It's annoying to see Russians on social media doing just that. In 2018 she would have had to play college tennis in America instead of turning pro if not for the support from Kazakhstan. Her success in tennis is not because she is from Russia.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | July 10, 2022 1:19 AM |
I find it hilarious that even if Djokovic wins tomorrow he drops out of the top 5.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | July 10, 2022 1:20 AM |
R111 also even if like the Osaka example they couldn't predict how good she would be then they dont get to afterward take credit for the success. But the USTA didnt do that like Russia has.

R115 it's never off-topic to mention the glorious butt of Tiafoe. He has the best butt in tennis. If only he'd start winning more fucking titles.

This irked Djokovic, who said that he had no respect for Kyrgios off the court. 'Off the court, I don’t have much respect for [Kyrgios], to be honest,' he said.
With some further comments in between, the relationship appeared to be at a point of no return. However, an unlikely 'bromance' has fostered and the two players are likely to greet each other with warmth ahead of the first serve in Sunday's match.
When the first shot goes down, however, there is unlikely to be any love lost between the two mavericks.
by Anonymous | reply 123 | July 10, 2022 3:50 AM |
R115, his ass really is a thing of beauty. Plus he has that stiff, stuttered walk. On tennis forums, people suggest he has tight hamstrings or he's purposely semi-strutting because he's a showman. I, of course, like to think it's because he had his ass tore up the night before, taking massive dick, as that ass should.

If that back and forth between Kyrgios and Dokovic is for real, I wonder if Nick is stupid enough to think any of the after-match plans will come to fruition.

Fun fact, Rybakina is only the third tennis player from an Asian country (or representing an Asian country in case you want to argue) that won a grad slam singles champion. The first one is Li Na from China (2011 FO, 2014 AO), the second Naomi Osaka from Japan (2019/20 USO, 2020/21 AO), Rubakina came as the 3rd from Kazakhstan, an central Asian nation.

R118 They do it because the stupid Wimbledon banned Russian players, now a Russian girl has won it, of course they are going to mock Wimbledon, you would do the same thing too if this happened to you/your country. If not for this stupid Russian ban, I doubt anyone in Russia would care that much, if there is any argument or case to be made, it would be criticism against their own Russian Federation for not funding her.

I'm watching the final since I missed it and I'm having a really hard time believing that Ons Jabeur is straight. The relationship with her husband seems real but she could be one of those 'comphet' (compulsory heterosexuality) people especially considering where she's from.
by Anonymous | reply 135 | July 10, 2022 8:03 AM |
^ where is she from? 19th century? She plays tennis for prize money, I don't think getting married is required for women to play sports in her country, or is it?
by Anonymous | reply 136 | July 10, 2022 8:08 AM |
R136 Tunisia is a pretty conservative and Muslim country. Don't forget that often it's more about family than about the country too. Family may have problems with gay people and most people don't want to be estranged from their community.
by Anonymous | reply 137 | July 10, 2022 8:10 AM |
could be but there is really no need for her, she could move to Monaco to live freely like many others, no need to stay in her country. Tennis is most "pro" and individual sports on earth, a player runs his or her own sports business, coaching, training, touring, management... entirely on their own, an outside support system is neither necessary nor needed.
by Anonymous | reply 138 | July 10, 2022 8:24 AM |
Jabeur looks like she could be Conchita Martinez' daughter
by Anonymous | reply 139 | July 10, 2022 8:26 AM |
Yeah but the thing with comphet is that it's often people who just think that it's what they're supposed to do (there's a phenomenon of late in life women coming out after being married to a man). HOWEVER, she could be straight for sure but just pings. There are people like that.
by Anonymous | reply 140 | July 10, 2022 8:36 AM |
I love how the commentators were saying 'Someone tell her (Elena) that she's won this' while Ons looked completely and genuinely devastated.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | July 10, 2022 9:19 AM |
Girls like Rybakina and Naomi Osaka who have huge serves and powerful ground strokes are extremely hard to play, yes others can beat them or even beat them convincingly on the scoreboard, but on court the match almost always depends on how they play, not their opponents. If they have their serves game under control, their opponents can only watch from a distance, that's what we saw yesterday, once Rybakina settled down, her own service games were mostly a breeze, that put Jabeur under immense pressure to keep up with her, and Jabeur cracked under pressure, her game plan collapsed. Jabeur even had a chance to break back with 3 break points, but Rybakina saved all three with non returnable serves, we can only imagine how devastated Jabeur must feel, her only chance to turn that match around vanished in minutes and there was nothing she can do about it.

R144 Great interview. Showed what I was writing about her - she should be eternally greatful to Kazakhstan. If anything, it was even more humiliating for Russians, who now look like idiots for not having scouted such a talent.
R103 Because Rybakina was compared to ethnic Kazakhs. Anisimova is ethnically Russian and Tiafoe is ethnically Liberian, two children of recent immigrants.

Note the caps—Djokovic is the top.
by Anonymous | reply 174 | July 10, 2022 3:12 PM |
I did think he was 'bad boy' hot at one point, he has beautiful skin and his voice is quite sexy.
But the spray-on hair and fugly tattoos (I normally don't mind tats) plus the try hard 'hood' clothing (basketball jerseys, backwards caps) are a major boner killer. He also has that slender but flabby, skinny-fat body with gangly limbs, the hooked nose, the beady eyes... he's lost it IMO.

But I also hope this is Djokovic's last major. Despite winning more Wimbledons than Sampras, he doesn't feel as good of a grass courter. I've spent less than two hours of cumulative watch time for the whole Wimbledon 2022 edition, half of which being allocated to the Serena fiasco against Tan. This is so NOT me. But anyway, Prissy Pants is now relegated to third best player and former GOAT, a.k.a a footnote of tennis history, and I guess that'll make my day for want of anything more exciting.

All tournaments should just go to electronic line calling and ditch line judges. The technology is there. Just use it. Other tournaments have used it and it removes the doubt and bad calls.
I figured Kyrgios would lose. Djokovic is just too solid. Still, Nick kept it closer than I thought. Kyrgios just brain farted at the worst moments, especially when he had triple break point and at the beginning of the fourth set tiebreak. In the end, that's really no surprise.

by Anonymous | reply 268 | July 10, 2022 5:37 PM |
To the hardcourts we go. Which Nadal and Djokovic win a lot but especially at the US Open they dont absolutely own like Wimbledon and the French. It seems like hard courts even out the playing field a bit.

by Anonymous | reply 270 | July 10, 2022 5:39 PM |
R253, all white is a Wimbledon rule. Not wearing a cap is respect for everyone. Wearing a red cap at the Wimbledon award ceremony shows that Kyrgios thinks he's better than everyone.

Nick should really get his sister a stylist. Her outfit was the worst part of the match for me: a swimsuit top, pants that drew attention to her camel toe, a fugly blazer, tacky red lips, blue nail polish, expensive I'm sure yet cheap looking jewellery, and her hair styled in a way that makes her look like a greasy spaniel. Get it together, girl!

They matter for seeding and the draw. With Novak ridiculously at 7, he could play Nadal in a Slam quarterfinal instead of a semi or final, which would make much more sense.

Of all things to be mad about, that's not 1 of them. The 2 worst aspects of Wimbledon are 1) the all-white clothing nonsense and 2) its attachment to the outdated, absurd notion of "royalty"

by Anonymous | reply 305 | July 11, 2022 12:14 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 307 | July 11, 2022 12:23 AM |
tradition for tradition's sake is idiotic
clothing color should be optional. There's nothing "cleaner" or "superior" about wearing white. It's just an old snooty tradition so the Wimby elites think they're still better than anyone else. Such a turnoff thank goodness other tournaments aren't like that

so yeah the men's game continues to suck. Every fucking year those of us who aren't up the big 2's asses think "this could be the season when the domination ends!" and every fucking time we're disappointed
I don't like Medvedev but enjoyed his stopping of Djokovic's calendar slam last year. I thought when he reached this year's AO final he'd be the new ATP hardcourt king but nope he choked so bad up 2 sets and with break point to run away with it. That match seemed to foreshadow the first half of the year with Nadal accepting numerous chokes from other opponents this season. Then we get to RG with the top half being the draw from hell. New it-boy Alcaraz wasn't quite ready for the moment and got tight against the odious Zverev, who then suffered a freak injury while giving Nadal hell in their QF match. Then Djokovic chokes against Nadal in the SF with 5-3 set point in the 4th set. Then Ruud gets demolished in the final. Then we get Wimbledon and the most in-form grass play Berrettini gets covid so he withdraws. Everyone knew that Djokovic, Nadal and Kyrgios were the only contenders but Kyrgios mentally wasn't tough enough.
I hope Nadal is healthy for the USO but how many times can it be said? The men's tour is a mess. It's too late for the guys in their mid to late 20s to redeem themselves at this point. The hope is with the younger guys that they'll be able to beat the big 2 before they fucking turn 40!
It really is unbelievable that yet again at least 3 of the 4 slams this year have gone to the big 2.

Djokovic's wife is as dumb as he is and I despise all the Djokotards and antivaxx morons who came out in droves to say she "got" Ben. No she didn't. Djokovic is the loser here. Ben is not "bullying" to post that as of now, Djokovic will be unable to play the USO or that he became a poster boy for the antivaxx movement. Djokovic chose stupidity over science and it could well have cost him the chance for more slams. He's not a victim or a martyr and damn sure does not have moral authority. by Anonymous | reply 348 | July 11, 2022 9:55 AM |
Great. Another player who thinks only slams matter (and only the ones he can do well at - obviously no French Open). It's not a surprise Naomi Osaka signed Kyrgios to her agency. Why don't we just cancel every other tournament and only have tennis played 4 times a year? These players are so spoiled and lazy and entitled. I feel for Billie Jean and Navratilova etc. who didn't even play all the slams because they were too busy trying to build a viable tour and a way for players to make a living. The fans and media don't help either, with them all just counting slams to see who wins the 'GOAT race' (who cares? can't we have some good matches instead?).
I remember Becker/Sampras/Agassi/Courier/Rios etc. fighting tooth and nail each week to climb the rankings and win tournaments. Lindsay and Martina H played in something like 16 consecutive tour level finals. No wonder the quality is so weak these days.

by Anonymous | reply 350 | July 11, 2022 12:04 PM |
Kyrgios doesn't even have the right level of ambition and commitment and he's not prepared to put the work in. When Sue Barker asked him at the Wimbledon award ceremony if being in his first Wimbledon final had made him hungry for more, his response was "absolutely not, I'm so tired". He says he and his team were so exhausted as he'd played do much tennis, even though he basically walked into the final when Nadal had to pull out of the semi.

R349 that's exacly was I was thinking was I was checking the career stats of recent WTA players: only a few big tournaments and that's it. Muguruza (at her peak back at Wimbly), Swiatek, Osaka, Badosa, all ranked really high by having only 2-4 titles, something that would have been unbelievable years and years ago. Fuck me, Badosa was No. 2 with only Indian Wells and nothing else! Osaka was No. 1 with 4 titles. They are just entitled and prissy. Neither Swiatek is humble enough to take part in 250 tournaments. They all need to be slapped.

r358, I don't think that anyone was claiming that Djokovic is lovable. But I believe that the point that r352 was trying to make was that, when it comes to Djokovic, there does seem to be a piling on, which I don't think is really fair. No, I don't agree with his anti-vaccination stance, and it has certainly made me much less of a fan of his, and yes every time he does his post-victory "my love to you" gesture I cringe. But, that said, I do continue to admire his tennis skills, mental toughness, and overall grit. I've said this before, but the thing I admire most about him is that he never settled for being No. 3 in an era with two all-time greats: Federer and Nadal. Most players would have been elated to be Top 10, but Djokovic made the commitment to do what it takes to be No. 1, and for that he has my respect and admiration.

Nah, R347. Not how it works. Slams are considered the greatest metric to decide GOAT status. There are four slams. Each one counts the same as the others. Rafa's won every slam twice, btw. And, as of now, he has the most. (Another fun way to look at it: Can you imagine if Rafa had two or three surfaces that were more like clay, like Fed and Novak have? He'd have about 40 slams!)
Rafa is the GOAT until Novaxx passes him in slams. Fed, sadly, is out of the conversation now. He probably is the most talented of the three, but he just didn't accomplish as much as his two rivals.
by Anonymous | reply 363 | July 11, 2022 7:30 PM |
Rod Laver is the GOAT but he only has 11 Slams.
by Anonymous | reply 364 | July 11, 2022 7:44 PM |
Rod Laver is a unique case, R364. Because he straddled the open era and pre-open era, he gets grandfathered into the conversation.
But I don't believe anyone thinks of him as the GOAT any longer. What Rafa, Novaxx and Fed have done is just too extraordinary for anyone else to be thoughtfully considered.

it's interesting though that both Nadal and Djokovic have very uneven slam wins.
Djokovic racked up most of his slams at the AO and Wimbledon:
AO 9 RG 2 W 7 US 3
Nadal has obviously has mostly RG followed a handful of USO
AO 2 RG 14 W 2 US 4

And while I'm asking questions, who was the first woman Novak greeted when he went up to the Royal Box area? He seemed very happy to see her.

POINT TAKEN I am the fan who Nick Kyrgios accused of having ‘700 drinks’ at Wimbledon…I’d only had two and I was supporting him
A TENNIS fan who Nick Kyrgios demanded be thrown out of Centre Court after he accused her of having "700 drinks" says she actually had just one Pimm's and a rosé.
The 27-year-old Australian was furious at Polish lawyer Ania Palus, 32, when she started to talk just as he was about to serve.
Ania, who was ejected temporarily, said she'd only had two drinks and blamed the heat on Centre Court.
She said: "He always says the crowd is against him and I wanted to show we were for him, I wanted to encourage him.
"I only had one Pimm's and one rosé.
"It's the temperature for me, I had no hat. I'm really sorry."
Kyrgios lashed out at the umpire in the third set, pointing out Ania who he thought was too drunk.
He told the umpire: "Why is she still here?
"She's drunk out of her mind and speaking to me in the middle of a game."
When asked to point her out, he said: "The one who looks like she's had about 700 drinks."
Ania was given a bottle of water and allowed back on court for the rest of the final.
Kyrgios repeatedly dropped the f-bomb during yesterday's final - with Prince George looking shocked in the stands as he watched his first-ever Wimbledon match.
A BBC commentator had to tell viewers after the incident yesterday afternoon: “Apologies for the language, it’s live sport, it’s tense”.
The foul language came after Kyrgios had lost a point on his serve before Djokovic went on to clinch his fourth Wimbledon title in a row.
He shouted up towards his girlfriend Costeen Hastzi and sister Halimah, complaining about their apparent lack of support and saying “Do you f****** care at all?”
Kyrgios, due in court in Oz for allegedly assaulting his ex-girlfriend, also yelled: “Just say something... is this not a big enough moment for you?” to his supporters.

by Anonymous | reply 389 | July 12, 2022 6:09 AM |
R359 that's because WTA has restrictions on top 10 players playing 250 events, in theory they can only participate in one 250 event and collect the ranking points, the rest of 250 events in the season will not bring in any ranking points for them, this is to prevent top players harvesting easy points from playing lower ranked in 250 events, top ranked players need to prove and earn their ranks against fellow top players in premiere events.
by Anonymous | reply 390 | July 12, 2022 6:24 AM |
I didn't know that, you learn something new every day. Looks like the next WTA500 is San Jose CA, August 1.
by Anonymous | reply 391 | July 12, 2022 7:02 AM |
ATP has similar rules too, only one 250 event will be counted in their ranking points, they can play as many as they want, some top players do schedule two 250 events, mostly for appearance fees, but they can only collect points from one event, the one with the best result. On the flip side, if you are a lower ranked player on the rise, playing consecutive 250 events is a relatively easy way to get you to the the top rank, because if you are wining, you can collect 150~250 points from each event and those points add up really fast, the notable examples were Sara Errani and Simona Halep, they won multiple 250 events in a row and quickly entered top 20 then top 10.

I think the WTA girlies can play an additional 250 tournament if it's in their home country.
I'm always surprised Venus has only 2 US Opens. It feels like she lost to the eventual champion (usually from a winning position) so many years in a row - Stephens, Henin, Clijsters x2, Serena x172839. I remember seeing her in New Haven and Stanford back in the day and her game was a sight to behold on US hard courts. She didn't even lose before the SF at the Open from her 1997 debut until 2004. So many missed opportunities, she at least should have taken one more.

Rafa is SO injured that he's on a jetski? Bullshit. He withdrew because he didn't want to play Kyrgios and he knew he couldn't beat Djokovic. Fed did the same at the FO 2021, withdrew due to injury to give Berretini the walkover to help him beat Djokovic. 2 days after withdrawing he was on the practice court preparing for Wimbledon.
Good for McEnroe to call him out.

I'm not a Rafa fan, but can you bitches cool it with the relentless 'HE'S NOT AS INJURED AS HE SAYS HE IS' posts? We get it, they are all drama queens. Federer at the RG 2021 as you mentioned, Djokovic playing through a supposedly life threatening ab tear at the AO 2021 and taking a massive medical time out when Tsitsipas was 2 sets up on him in the RG final. Rafa missing Miami every year.
Also in case you are not aware, jet skis do not require any foot dexterity. You just... sit on it and ride, hon. That isn't proof of shit.
by Anonymous | reply 397 | July 12, 2022 1:07 PM |
R395 you can play as many as 250 tournaments you want, but you will not get points from all those 250 events. The ranking is based on the points you earned from a total of 16 tournaments allowed in the preceding 52 weeks. Among those 16, the points earned from 4x grand slams and 4x 1000 mandatory (IW, Miam...) must be included in your total points, that leaves a player with only 8 other events to add eligible points, among those 8, two must from non mandatory premium 5 events like Cincy or Toronto, so it further narrows the eligible events to 6 only. With the best of 6 rules, it's very rare for a top player to pick points from two 250 events because there are other premium events 480 throughout the year, for a top 10 player, they can play more 250 but it's mostly a waste of time for them, so most top 10 players will only play one 250 event for appearance fees and it usually it's the first one to start the season, some will schedule another one later in the season.
And this is based on the maximum allowed 16 events scenario, rarely a top player even had 16 tournaments scheduled, most are 14 or less for a year, which further reduced their participation in lower ranked tournaments of 250 etc.

r396, at least have some self respect and to keep your mental illness between yourself and your therapist.
As Rafa said, he withdrew because he didn't think he could win. He has beaten both Kyrgios and Djokovic on multiple occasions in his career, but knows he needs to be completely on top of his game to get that done. The injury does not allow him to play at the level he knew would be required. He withdrew. End of story.

BECKER BREAK Fallen tennis star Boris Becker lands himself ‘cushy’ prison job teaching fellow lags sports science
BORIS Becker has sparked outrage among his fellow inmates by landing a cushy job in jail.
The fallen tennis star has been made a classroom assistant, teaching sports science to other lags at HMP Huntercombe.
But his rapid elevation to the sought-after position has prompted other prisoners’ families to write letters of protest to the governor.
One insider said: “You would normally serve years before getting a job as a classroom assistant as it is seen as a privilege.
“But Becker has been given the job within weeks of being sentenced.
"There is a lot of resentment about it and the families of some prisoners have written letters of complaint.”
Three-times Wimbledon champion Becker was jailed for two and a half years in April for hiding £2.5million of assets and loans to avoid paying debts after being made bankrupt.
He is serving his sentence at the category C prison, near Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire.
In his role, the 54-year-old teaches PE theory and the benefits of exercise and diet to cons in a classroom at the jail, which has a high proportion of foreign inmates.
However, he is not working in the jail’s gym as he does not have enhanced prisoner status because he has not served long enough behind bars.
The insider added: “It’s not exactly the life of luxury he’s used to — but he’s got it better than most inmates.”
Becker is facing automatic deportation at the end of his sentence. He must serve half his term because he is not entitled to an electronic tag as a foreign prisoner.
But he is hopeful of being repatriated to his native Germany by November at the latest under the Government’s Early Removal Scheme. Becker believes he will then be released into the community before Christmas under the softer German penal system.
The six-times Grand Slam champ was allowed to watch the Wimbledon tournament behind bars.
He is said to have been thrilled by Novak Djokovic, who he coached between 2014 and 2016, clinching his seventh men’s title.
Becker’s trial centred on his bankruptcy in 2017 and an unpaid loan on his estate in Majorca.
He was obliged to disclose all assets to creditors, who were owed nearly £50million, but failed to do so.
Last night the Prison Service said: “It’s untrue to suggest any preferential treatment was given.
“Offenders are able to access a variety of work and education opportunities while in prison.”

NET-NICKS Nick Kyrgios’ incredible Wimbledon meltdowns captured on camera for dramatic Drive To Survive-style Netflix documentary
NICK KYRGIOS' stormy run to this year's Wimbledon final will be featured in a new behind-the-scenes Netflix documentary.
Now fans of the 27-year-old will be thrilled to hear he will be the focus of an upcoming Netflix documentary about life on the ATP and WTA tennis tours.
The American streaming giant has already had success with sports documentaries like Formula 1: Drive To Survive, which followed the lives of F1 drivers.
The next show in the series will follow PGA golfers.
Netflix are also co-producers of The Last Dance documentary, which centers around basketball legend Michael Jordan.
And as the cameras followed Kyrgios around Wimbledon this year, he was picked up on one mic saying: "I feel like I'm in The Last Dance".
Filming on the tennis documentary is thought to have started in January.
These types of productions tend to be an unfiltered and raw insight into the sports stars they follow - and that should make for interesting viewing with controversial Kyrgios.
The world No 45 was fined a total of £15,000 for transgressions at Wimbledon this month.

There was a RUS vs UKR battle in the Budapest WTA event yesterday that equals the 6th longest womens match of the Open Era (according to people at Tennis Forum). Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine defeated Kamilla Rakhimova in 3 hours and 54 minutes. The Russian had a MP and led *5-3 in the final set, but eventually gave back to back double faults to hand over the win at 5-7.
Speaking of Russians, did anyone see Rybakina being dragged to Nur Sultan Kazakhstan for probably only the 2nd time of her life to receive a 'homecoming'? The photos are hilarious. There are maybe about 50 people who showed up, and the photo ops include this VERY SUBTLE one of her holding up a Kazakh (Not Russian!!!!!!) passport. I wonder if Wimbledon had anything to do with this. Girl can't wait to go back home to Moscow and stop this charade.

THAT'S ACE Andy Murray reveals he wants to coach Emma Raducanu after he retires as he admits career is ‘coming to an end’
Murray, 35, will climb back into the world's top 50 next week after wins over Sam Querrey and Max Purcell - but he accepts that he has entered the twilight of his career.
He said: "You never know how close you are to the end but I’m aware I’m getting towards the end of my career.
"So I want to make the most of every match in every tournament I get to play."
Asked about a possible move into coaching, Murray revealed the four players he would love to work with after he hangs up his racquet.
He said: "Female player would be Emma [Raducanu] and male players would be between [Carlos] Alcaraz, [Stefanos] Tsitsipas and Jack Draper.
"They work hard, they seem like they love the sport. Alcaraz and Tsitsipas haven’t won a slam yet. They’re obviously still very young and I think they have the potential to do it."

Bublik, Cressy, Kubler...can 1 of you please win the title and stop Isner?

Oh, Misery.
Hang up the sneaks, hun. You're never gonna win a big tournament again.
by Anonymous | reply 465 | July 15, 2022 11:44 PM |
r461 His backhand is gone, Thiem is basically done. He said he has recovered from his wrist injuries but he would never get back his old back hand, one handed backhand, the kinda of rarity among players. There is a reason why OHBH is so rare, it put a lot stress on your wrist and it's injury prone, once your wrist gave up, your tennis is over.
by Anonymous | reply 466 | July 16, 2022 12:50 AM |
R466 at least he got 1 slam. A large majority of players get 0.

The US Open final between Zverev and Thiem was one of the worst matches I’ve ever seen.
by Anonymous | reply 468 | July 16, 2022 1:07 AM |
R468 so true, it's an unbelievable bad match at the end, Zverev should have won that match but he blew it, it could be anxiety attack, he had trouble closing the match and gave Thiem an opportunity, but Thiem was equally nervous, he wasted it and gifted back to Zverev but unfortunately Zverev was not ready yet, back to Thiem again...the match quickly descended to "you take it", "No, you take it, it's yours!" "No I insist you take it...." both played like a wuss, it was a farce!
by Anonymous | reply 469 | July 16, 2022 1:42 AM |
R469, that match is proof of the importance of fans. I think if they had played it in front of a howling mob of drunken New Yorkers, instead of an empty stadium, the level of play would have been much higher.
by Anonymous | reply 470 | July 16, 2022 1:52 AM |
Here's the 10 minutes plus tiebreak of the final set, it's even worse than I remembered.
Ps, it's Thiem not Zverev who should have closed out that match, before TB, Thiem even had an opportunity to serve out but only to be broken back.
by Anonymous | reply 471 | July 16, 2022 2:17 AM |

To be fair, Thiem was fantastic the whole tournamnent (while Zverev was pretty bad and on the verge of elimination several times).
The final was a different story, Thiem played pretty bad, and both had a lot of problems closing the match

interesting-a lot more of the top guys are playing in this coming week's Euro clay events compared to the women. Only Kontaveit, Krejcikova and Kasatkina are noteworthy on the WTA in Hamburg.
By contrast for the men,
Alcaraz is top seed and will play Kuhn who recently switched nationality from Spain to Germany. Kuhn looks like a skinnier Davidovich Fokina
Baez is there too
PCB playing again
DL anti-fave Rune
Coric vs. lookalike Djere
Schwartzman
Basilashvili vs. Karatsev should be hilarious on clay
Cerundolo
Rublev vs. craziest scheduling yet Bublik who is in the Newport grass final. I wonder if he'll still play Hamburg
in Gstaad
Ruud is top seed
Berrettini is #2
RBA is #3
Garin is #6
#7 Gaston vs. Thiem
by Anonymous | reply 491 | July 17, 2022 8:41 AM |
Kuhn was supposed to be the next best thing a couple of years ago. He was the best player born in 2000 only behind FAA, but something went wrong (he was always ahead of Davidovich Fokina in spanish competitions).
Everytime he was on the verge of rising in the rankings he injured. Last Wimbledon was the first time he was in a GS main draw (he lost to Nakashima in four sets).
Unlike Davidovich Fokina (who is and always was spanish), Kuhn is german, he decided to play for Spain because he was raised here, and he feel spanish. The recent change has all to do with money, german federation always supported him (he even received wc to german tournaments after playing for Spain). Everybdoy seems to think he is a good guy, and even after some disastrous years he is able to keep his ranking around 250 (unlike other former promising players like Rudolf Molleker whose ranking went down like a rock)

Djokovic and his fans must be so proud of the fact that politicians like Rand Paul are coming out of the woodwork to back him in his attempt to get into the States to play the US Open. He’s all for “medical freedom,” y’all, according to Paul, and has “natural immunity,” which, as we know, was certified by absolutely water-tight, above-board declarations from the Serbian ministry of health.
by Anonymous | reply 495 | July 17, 2022 4:34 PM |
I so won't be shocked if Djokovic appears on some Fox "News" show ahead of the USO
you know the right wingers are going to make that their next big story
it was crazy to see the American right wingers actually bash the right wing Australian government for deporting Djokovic earlier this year. Typically right wingers all get sexual pleasure out of being very anti-immigrant/anti-foreigner. Oh no, the American right wing has now moved so far right that they will side with immigrants/foreigners if it means they can express anti-science views (in this it's their anti-vaccination stance).
by Anonymous | reply 496 | July 17, 2022 6:43 PM |
R496 well Djokovic is a multi millionaire so not the typical poor to middle class foreigner they usually rag on.
by Anonymous | reply 497 | July 17, 2022 6:57 PM |
What the hell happened to ADF? After the Monte Carlo final he went into a tennis coma of sorts.
Kuhn is another former junior star who never took off. He's already 22. He might be a Karatsev-like late bloomer but he has a few years left to do it.
So happy for Cerendulo and Baez. They played an amazing week and defeated many top players, Cerundolo in particular. Richly deserved title.
by Anonymous | reply 498 | July 17, 2022 7:01 PM |
R497 there's no consistency. The American right wing likes to rag on those they deem "elites" too and Djokovic is certainly 1 of those.

I didn't see the original insta story from Berrettini, only his apology but is it not known in Italy that even if not intended, that symbol is seen as racist? I imagine since he said LeBron is his idol that he probably used the gorilla emoji to mean "he's a beast" at sports but he should have known better. At least he took it down and apologized but still he looks quite ignorant now. The ones calling him out on twitter were mostly other Italians I believe
by Anonymous | reply 517 | July 18, 2022 10:26 AM |
Italians are incredibly insensitive to all things that might give racial or religious offence. Berrettini wouldn’t have been aware until it was pointed out by someone else that using a gorilla symbol would be perceived as offensive, just like most Italians are flabbergasted if not incredulous that an Black American opera singer would refuse to perform with a cast using blackface for their performance of Aida a the Verona Arena. Most, unfortunately, would see it as just another example of political correctness gone mad.

R536, it probably depends on who your “authentic self” is. Tom Daley seems happy to live his life on Instagram, and didn’t seem to be too bothered when a tabloid published details of him cheating on his husband, something the paper might not have done if he was still closeted. The skier Gus Kentworthy, however, seemed to get caught up in all of the attention after he came out; he was all over the place, partying, acting, and he seemed much less serious about his sport.
by Anonymous | reply 542 | July 19, 2022 1:45 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 545 | July 19, 2022 10:33 AM |
R545 I don't deny he's trying to hide anything, just that he's never actually come out and said publicly that he's gay. It'd be big news if he did since he's an active commentator, was Top 20 and was well known in his day, if only really among committed tennis fans and/or Americans.
It was quite big news among gays/tennis fans when the almost unknown Brian Vahaly came out (years after retiring). Even the quickest glance at JMG's Instagram would let anyone know he's the gayest gay who ever did gay, but he's never come out himself. Thought people might pile on the host journalists/coach for outing him on a public platform without his permission.

[quote]Navratilova, Mauresmo, Billie Jean King and several others have done fine so why is it so much more shameful and harder for men to do it?
Because gay men put their penises in other men's assholes, 'the unsavory deed', which the heterosexual world (the majority), consider to be 'icky', 'an abomination', 'perverted', and 'dirty'. And while many countries in the world give legal protection to gay men, or at least are willing to give performative lip-service to acceptance of gay male sex, the reality on the ground amongst straight male athletes is they would prefer to not have to deal with gays in their locker-rooms (despite happily spouting that 'it doesn't matter to them'). They have irrational fears of being 'looked at/checked out ' by gays, and seem to imagine that 'surprise anal' is something they will have to watch out for, lol! There is a great divide between what is legislated and what really happens on the ground. Sorry, that's reality. However it will happen sometime; some young gay male tennis player will simply be open about his orientation from the get go, as he rises up through the ranks, and will be accepted for the most part. I do hope he isn't corralled into representing 'all the gays everywhere all the time' though.
