George Cukor
All but officially out and proud gay gave us many memorable films, what do you think was his best work and why?
DL posters weigh in why George Cukor who everyone in Hollywood circles and elsewhere knew was gay largely was left alone. MGM certainly didn't push the issue as they did with other gay actors and directors such as Vincente Minnelli.
Invitations to George Cukor's house parties (of all sorts) were highly coveted. The place was decorated by DL fav and out gay Billy Haines. GC apparently had private all male pool parties nearly every Sunday that everyone knew about.

My favorite is "Holiday."
By any measure, his career was extraordinary.

He was a self-loathing homophobe. But then again, so were most homosexuals in the 30s. Society made sure that was the case.

The fussy scenes he directed in Gone With The Wind are the best-acted in the movie.

When Vivien Leigh went to his house on Saturday nights for dinner he'd serve luxuriant meals. The next day he'd have his chef turn the leftovers into stew for his gay boy parties.

Love Among The Ruins. He let Larry have his last hurrah, in what was surely Larry's way over the top performance. Sublimely delivered. See summation sequence at end of film

I suppose Cukor's Sunday sex parties are where Roddy McDowall did his autofellatio trick.

The Philadelphia Story is one of the greatest movies of all time.
What a cast it had, Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant, James Stewart, three of the biggest movies icons ever. Perhaps the greatest casting coup ever ?

The Philadelphia Story is a great start. All the stars were at the tip of their game. Great story and script.

R9
If you are referring to George Towers, you're not going to find much out that isn't already known, and that's not much.
"Despite Mr. McGilligan's repeated efforts, Cukor's protege and heir, George Towers, refused all requests for interviews. (According to the book's afterword, Mr. Towers told him, "Biography is a scummy profession.") Mr. Towers, the executor of the Cukor estate, also denied permission to quote the Cukor letters and papers -- many of which are public -- without his prior approval of the entire manuscript. The author declined. "At times," Mr. McGilligan said of this constraint, "I thought it was going to kill me. But I used nothing. We did not want any problems with the estate."
Whatever happened between the two men only George Cukor and George Towers know for sure. One is dead, and the other isn't naming any names.

The nasty rumors about Cukor and sex with men are so weird. He wasn’t gay.

The first party at George’s I was invited to was overwhelming. Not due to the endless beautiful guys but for the beauty of his home, particularly the library which had endless 1st editions and leather-bound scripts. Glorious. I lingered so long I attracted the host’s attention. He said “most people never read the titles”. We.chatted about books and thru time became friends. I was in a relationship with the man I now have been with 50 years and G knew and loved our puppy love. He refused to invite us to the poolside events because he didn’t want to be responsible for ruining our love.
Fascinating man and complex friend.

The presence of other beauties can not "ruin" your love, Miss r24, unless the love was already ruined.

Hepburn and Tracy stayed in separate guest houses on his estate- not the same. Both were principally gay- as was Cukor of course.
Hepburn’s late life lie about her relationship with Tracy baffled me. Completely unnecessary for her to make the talk show rounds planting her story. Both their legacies as actors were safe.
