What is the best American style breakfast?

There are regional and class differences, and this may shift over time. But is there one single best "American" breakfast?

Moon Over My Hammy!

by Anonymousreply 1June 30, 2022 2:54 AM

It could be something as simple as cereal, bananas and milk. Corn flakes or Cheerios.

by Anonymousreply 2June 30, 2022 2:57 AM

McDonalds has the concept down: eggs, bacon, pancakes, and hash browns.

by Anonymousreply 3June 30, 2022 3:05 AM

Two eggs, toast, and hash browns.

Maybe bacon.

by Anonymousreply 4June 30, 2022 3:07 AM

I like an omelette.

Is eggs benedict American in origin? If so, that gets my vote.

by Anonymousreply 9June 30, 2022 3:21 AM

Biscuits and grits smothered in sowsage graxy!

by Anonymousreply 10June 30, 2022 3:21 AM

Depends on the section of the country.

Huevos Rancheros, Chicken & Waffles, Fish (S. Carolina), Bagels & Lox, Corned Beef Hash, Grits & Grillades, etc.

by Anonymousreply 15June 30, 2022 3:27 AM

I prefer a breakfast burrito from a Mexican restaurant. American style might be a Sunnyside up egg on toast/English muffin with some avocado under the egg. Yum! Oh, don't forget the bacon drizzled with pancake syrup. Yum!

by Anonymousreply 16June 30, 2022 3:30 AM

Bacon and eggs! Everyone's!?!

At a local pancake venue, I used to like a sausage omelet (filled with crumbled breakfast sausage), topped with salsa and sautéed mushrooms, a bagel & cream cheese on the side, and a cup of hot tea.

by Anonymousreply 34June 30, 2022 6:52 AM

I prefer breakfast for dinner. I can’t do greasy, heavy food as soon as my feet hit the floor.🤢

by Anonymousreply 35June 30, 2022 7:23 AM

I like eggs, hash browns, toast and maybe bacon or ham. Hash browns are the best at diners or restaurants - I can never get them right on my grill.

by Anonymousreply 36June 30, 2022 9:01 AM

At home I make scrambled eggs, with either bacon or roasted rosemary potatoes. Sometimes all three.

I never make French Toast at home, as I don't want to keep maple syrup in the house, but I will order it out if it comes with real maple syrup (and usually fruit). Maybe I'll get bacon with it, maybe not.

by Anonymousreply 37June 30, 2022 9:07 AM

by Anonymousreply 45June 30, 2022 1:50 PM

I make a motion to disqualify Eggs Benedict. Yes, it is American, but the individual components convey the opposite; English muffin, Canadian bacon, and Hollandaise sauce--all literally named for other countries, accurately or not. I know Canadian bacon isn't canadian, but the other 2 ingredients originate from outside the US, Hollandaise being from French cooking.

It's also more of a frou frou brunch dish ordered out, not something the average American cook is going to whip up at home first thing in the morning.

Whatever the classic American breakfast is, it includes fluffy pancakes/flapjacks, which are truly American in origin.

Strong coffee regular and a bacon, egg, and cheese on a roll from a bodega, and a cigarette after before you get into the office.

by Anonymousreply 52June 30, 2022 9:00 PM

R52 oh I remember those days. Though I just got an egg on a roll - no bacon and no cheese. I wanted to be skinny.

by Anonymousreply 53June 30, 2022 9:02 PM

Biscuits (homemade) and sausage gravy (spicy).

by Anonymousreply 54June 30, 2022 9:04 PM

Two poached eggs, sourdough toast (some for the eggs, some with butter and jam), hash browns (slightly crispy), coffee, maybe pineapple juice.

by Anonymousreply 55June 30, 2022 9:07 PM

Let’s face it. The quintessential American breakfast is Poptarts, EGGOs or cold cereal. Something quick and full of empty calories.

by Anonymousreply 56June 30, 2022 9:20 PM

r56 - ugh on all of those. I'm American and those have never been my breakfast choices.

I like a good corned beef hash and eggs, fried or scrambled -- with toast, no hash browns since the hash has potatoes. Must be the canned kind, crisped up. I don't want a healthy version.

Or, a huge bloody mary with all the fixings - the drink that eats like a meal. (This one is delicious, BTW)

I don't eat breakfast on weekdays but my go to on weekends around 10:30 or 11 am is 2 eggs Sunnyside up or soft scrambled with toast, bacon or country sausage and coffee.

If I go out it's the same but with hashbrowns. If it's a nicer brunch it's eggs Benedict and mimosas. I may sub toast for biscuits and gravy.

I hate Cracker Barrel but those bitches have great biscuits.

Barring that: a bacon, American cheese and fried onion omelet. Wheat toast, coffee.

The above, only when having breakfast out. At home, either rolled or steel cut oats, some chopped prunes(don't snicker, it's the secret to "success"), walnuts, a tsp.cinnamon and one of dark cocoa.

My version of toad in the hole (hole cut out of the bread, egg dropped in the hole) with bacon on the side, coffee, and an orange.

I have a craving for this every time I watch Moonstruck. Rose Castorini makes it for breakfast at the end but she makes roasted red peppers with it. Roasted red peppers repeat on my so I don't eat them.

I like either (a) eggs w/bacon and roasted potatoes and ketchup or (b) French Toast and bacon. But the bacon has to be on a separate plate. I don't want to pick something up in my hand that has maple syrup on it. And it has to be real maple syrup, btw.

by Anonymousreply 75July 1, 2022 1:58 PM

R75, some of us use forks to pick up our bacon.

by Anonymousreply 76July 1, 2022 2:09 PM

r76, do you also use a knife and a fork to eat corn on the cob? Fried chicken?

by Anonymousreply 77July 1, 2022 2:11 PM

R73, I love toad in the hole!

Same for eggs benedict. My two faves.

But R1 wins the thread. Your response reminded me of Denny's and I haven't eaten there in years!

by Anonymousreply 78July 1, 2022 2:12 PM

No, R77 -- but those are intended to be eaten by hand. I've never heard of anyone picking up bacon with his hands, unless he was sitting in a high chair wearing a bib.

R73 that's actually called a bird in the nest.

NY can keep their bagels. Too hard and lox is nasty. I've never understand how anyone can eat fishy crap in the morning.🤢

by Anonymousreply 82July 1, 2022 3:14 PM

I eat bacon with my hands. It just crumbles if you try to cut it. Like pizza it can be eaten with hands. I've never seen anyone eat it with a fork and knife here in the US anywhere.

by Anonymousreply 94July 1, 2022 7:15 PM

No one eats eggs, toast, hash browns and bacon every day, either.

by Anonymousreply 95July 1, 2022 7:18 PM

i eat eggs and toast almost every day. sometimes with potatoes (not hash browns though, they are difficult to get right outside of a diner).

by Anonymousreply 96July 1, 2022 7:20 PM

I eat eggs almost every day, but I’m low carb and gave up meat.

by Anonymousreply 97July 1, 2022 7:45 PM

Hash browns are relatively easy -if you know what you're doing.

by Anonymousreply 98July 1, 2022 8:24 PM

Really r98? Because I've been cooking and baking for 30+ years and am frequently complimented for both. For some reason, my hash browns come out either too mushy or burnt. You must know some secret I don't.

Besides that, I'm not usually wanting to babysit potatoes for the better part of a half hour for breakfast. I usually like my breakfasts to be somewhat quicker.

by Anonymousreply 99July 1, 2022 8:30 PM

let them sit and don't stir too much

by Anonymousreply 100July 1, 2022 8:39 PM

Grate the potato into a bowl of cold water. Drain and press to remove all the water. Place in a hot skillet with about 1/4 inch of oil. Oil should be shimmering. Flatten the potatoes with a spatula. Salt and pepper as desired. Cover and cook. When totally browned on the bottom, flip. Cook second side uncovered to desired crispiness. Do not keep turning the potatoes -lift gently to see if the first side is thoroughly cooked before you flip.

by Anonymousreply 101July 1, 2022 8:40 PM

why on earth would you grate a potato - which is already wet - into a bowl of cold water, only to have to press out/remove the water? What nonsense is this?

by Anonymousreply 102July 1, 2022 8:49 PM

R102, it removes the starch, which is what turns gray and slimy when you cook the potato. R99 wanted to know the secret(s) of making good hash browns, and removing excess starch is one of them. The other is getting the potato as dry as you possibly can. I usually place my drained, grated potato on a towel and then roll/squeeze so the towel soaks up as much of the water as possible. Yes, it's a pain, but it only takes a minute -and the results are well worth the effort.

My hash browns.

Russet potatoes, sliced maybe 1/4 inch thick.

Use paper towels to blot exuded starch/water.

Oil in pan, lay potatoes down. Let them lie like that until browned.

Turn each piece over to get the other side brown.

Easy breakfast potatoes:

Cut red or yellow potatoes into thinnish triangles, spread them on parchment paper in a roasting pan, toss in evoo, salt, and rosemary (I use Penzey's). I roast them at 375 for 30-35 minutes, during which time I prepare my eggs to be scrambled. I shake them in an old Talenti container with salt and a bit of cream (you can substitute water).

Very easy breakfast. I may or may cook bacon or sausage in the egg pan first, then drain, then cook the eggs in the same pan.

r139, was just about to post that you can make cube steak on your own. From wiki:

Cube steak or cubed steak is a cut of beef, usually top round or top sirloin, tenderized and flattened by pounding with a meat tenderizer. The name refers to the shape of the indentations left by that process (called "cubing").

I haven't had chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy in sooooooooo long. Might need to make this soon.

i had to opt out of my usual egg-based breakfast this morning because my stomach has been cramping up all day long. But tomorrow I'll be doing an omelette with spinach & feta sausage and red/yellow peppers, country potatoes and sliced blood orange. Tea for the drink.

Today just a simple omelet and an Englis muffin. Didn't overdue it as I'm cooking baby back ribs and corn bread for later.
