His dad looks to have some Berber genes.

Portuguese people have about 10% North African Berber and Subsaharan genes and to a lesser degree some Arab genes from the Islamic Empire. Some even have Romani genes which are Indo-Aryan people. Penelope Cruz claims Romani gypsy ancestry and Antonio Banderas has said he has Arab roots. Look at Cristiano Ronaldo, he is a clear example of a Portuguese man with North African and Subsaharan genetics. But Iberians are naturally olive-skinned. Basque are indigenous to the peninsula with little to no mixture and have a deep olive complexion. So I wouldn't say Shawn or his dad are people of color. But just an example of Mediterranean genetic diversity, people of that region share a genetic and cultural history before Christian nationalism and antisemitism/Islamophobia gave rise to a distinctive European or white identity .

R12 Actually Iberians came up with the term white, "blanco", to distinguish themselves from Moors ("browns"), Jews, Romanis, Indigenous American people they conquered and Black slaves they held. French and later British and Dutch took the terms from them in fact. Portuguese certainly didn't see themselves as people of color considering how brutal they were towards their slaves in Brazil and Brazil was among the last countries to ban slavery even The US and Russia got rid of it before them. And try calling an Italian-American guido from NY, a person of color and be ready to get cursed 20 different ways. I wouldn't claim people as "colored" who don't want that anyway. Nobody is treating Shawn Mendes like he's a thug, a terrorist or spreading China virus.
