No one has any comments about Mulan?

R3 Mulan is a feminist hero and a cross-dressing hero. She did what she had to do. I love the original animated film. Wasn't as thrilled about the live action.

Great film. Ahead of its time. Love Eddie Murphy but I always found it strange... a jive talkn' dragon...in China.

Don't forget Chinese American Donny Osmond.

She wore male clothing and fought like a man. Are we sure she wasn't trans like Jeanne d'Arc ?

George Takei was good

Mulan and Yentl are the two films that really get it and are more than just a "stunt" to cross dress. They don't preach they just show. Both are excellent and make valid points to make about gender roles and perception that anyone, gay, straight, everyone can relate to. And both with memorable characters and great music. A+

Mulan was great. I actually feel the later Disney Renaissance movies like Hunchback, Hercules, Mulan and Tarzan as well as early 00s ones like Emperor's New Groove, Atlantis, Treasure Planet and Lilo & Stitch are underrated. Disney was more focused on Pixar, marketing Ghibli and beating DreamWorks than investing in their 2D animation which was sad.

Mulan was definitely a step in the right direction in how Disney portrayed nonwhite cultures. It kept it pretty accurate and respectable. I love how diverse the designs were too instead of the typical "let's make all the Asians look alike" syndrome. Mulan set the way for movies like Princess and the Frog, Moana, Brave, Big Hero 6, Raya, etc.

I love the songs especially I'll Make A Man Out Of You and Reflection.

It's a fun movie that's for sure. I really hope Disney commits to live action Hunchback and Hercules. If done right, I bet they could be really good.

Live-action Hercules would be exciting. No matter how you cut it, they cannot make it faithful to the original myth that is too violent and sexual. Also, if it was accurate, he'd be Herakles. I prefer the original fairy tales of Beauty and the Beast and Little Mermaid because they're more meaningful than the Disney ones. I prefer Disney's Hercules though because it was such a fun twist on things even though it was a Superman clone, I love the incorporation of black gospel music and character designs resembling Greek pottery.

Hunchback is the darkest Disney film and ahead of its time in the way it delivered its message too. So if they go live-action, I want them to go PG-13. No sugarcoating.

The scene with the matchmaker still gets me 😄

The first film where Harvey Firestein plays butch

by Anonymousreply 14June 18, 2022 3:49 PM

Oh god, I was in first grade and had a Mulan Eraser, as well as a Mulan pen and a Mulan doll ( not Mulan herself, the guy who she was attracted to)

I also had a Mulan red plastic cup. But somehow I only ended up watching the movie when I was in second grade,a year later.

Then, many years later I actually watxhed Mulan 2 as an adult... uninteresting.
