Eldergays tell me about Andrew Cunanan

What did Datalounge think of him? Did it exist back in those days? Was he considered a hawt mixed race twink? Was all forgiven because he was cute? Did DLers make racist comments about him? Did Darren Criss do a good job portraying Andrew?

by Anonymousreply 71June 14, 2022 1:45 AM

He was a murderer and nobody liked him.

by Anonymousreply 1June 11, 2022 11:29 AM

Op, try bing.com you twat

by Anonymousreply 2June 11, 2022 11:51 AM

I remember the new york Post getting page pics of him at the time. Gripping news.

by Anonymousreply 3June 11, 2022 11:53 AM

OP this shit is so boring.

by Anonymousreply 4June 11, 2022 11:53 AM

Darren Criss was very good as Cunanan.

R4 why don't you go and post in threads you find interesting? That's what we all do. You don't have to post in every thread. Or do you?

by Anonymousreply 5June 11, 2022 12:00 PM

I remember thinking it was creepy because his mother lived just a few towns away from me at the time (Central Illinois).

Another thing that was creepy is that Princess Diana went to his funeral, and then she died the next month.šŸ˜³

by Anonymousreply 6June 11, 2022 12:09 PM

R6, do you mean Versaceā€™s funeral? I think she skipped Cunananā€™s.

by Anonymousreply 7June 11, 2022 12:14 PM

I don't know if I want to make fun of OP, or r6.

I could do both, but that seems excessive.

So I've decided to give you both a reprieve.

YOU'RE WELCOME!

by Anonymousreply 8June 11, 2022 12:15 PM

R6 Versace funeral was in Paris?

by Anonymousreply 9June 11, 2022 12:19 PM

Eldergays are not going to tell anybody anything anymore.

by Anonymousreply 10June 11, 2022 12:25 PM

Cunanan is a Magazine Age star-fucker without a social media platform.

He slung some good dick before his meth-fueled ambition drove him beyond his wildest dreams.

He was thisclose to Princess Di....

The houseboat ending is the only part of Ryan Murphy's series that I wish was explored a little further.

I just read that he hung out at The Townhouse when he was in NYC, that infamous gay bar for eldergays, as you call them.

by Anonymousreply 12June 11, 2022 12:42 PM

I could imagine him at the Townhouse.

by Anonymousreply 13June 11, 2022 12:45 PM

He could be fun

but he was a bad breaker-upper.

by Anonymousreply 14June 11, 2022 1:11 PM

OK, OP, this Eldergay will answer. Datalounge was not around. We may have only had the primitive IHSG, Is He or She Gay site, if that. We still primarily communicated through pocket hankies. If DL had been in existence, I presume there would have been a fair number of forgives because he had a hot shirtless picture. One of his victims was cute, so that was a downer. Overall, the ā€œgay spree killerā€ stories were exciting back in those dull and slow days.

by Anonymousreply 15June 11, 2022 1:13 PM

I think the biggest remaining mystery about Cunanan is whether he did or didn't have a prior sexual relationship with Lee Miglin. There had always been rumors here in Chicago that Miglin was a closet queen (what straight man could put up with Marilyn?). It just never made any sense that Cunanan would drive all the way to Chicago, randomly find an old closet queen, tie him up, torture and kill him. There has to be more to the story. The Miglin family just hushed the whole thing up.

by Anonymousreply 16June 11, 2022 1:27 PM

I lived in DC then, and had a very active social life. I remember discussing his whereabouts with others, and hoping that he would not turn up in DC. It was assumed that he would leave Chicago, but unsure if he would head to CA or the East Coast. Cute, dark-haired twinks were looked at with extreme suspicion -- especially if they were from out-of-town or otherwise unknown to us bar/party regulars.

by Anonymousreply 17June 11, 2022 1:30 PM

Let's guess OP's IQ!

I say 84.

by Anonymousreply 18June 11, 2022 1:32 PM

OP, look. The Ryan Murphy mini series about the Versace murder does an excellent job of showing us who Andrew was. Go watch it. And of course he had a thing with Miglin. Miglin was someone he met when he was being kept by that gorgeous, wealthy older man in CA.

by Anonymousreply 19June 11, 2022 1:35 PM

He was never that cute, just an unhinged rent boy who got famous by accidentally getting to kill Versace.

by Anonymousreply 20June 11, 2022 1:47 PM

R17

I was in DC at that time as well. Hadn't he been spotted in Rehoboth (DE), or am I dreaming that? I thought I remembered there being credible evidence.

Or, maybe the gay crowd in DC just wanted to be a part of the drama and it was a false rumor.

by Anonymousreply 21June 11, 2022 1:56 PM

Darren Criss was superb.

by Anonymousreply 22June 11, 2022 2:05 PM

It's still a mystery as to what that was all about, whether the little Loquita killed anyone, and perhaps it all was about big cocacola deals/shipments in Florida?

Remnds us of the OJ Simpson thing in 1994. OJ targeted to take the fall for a drug hit (colombian necklace).

by Anonymousreply 23June 11, 2022 2:18 PM

He was famous before killing Versace. He was on Americaā€™s Most Wanted each week while he was on the run.

by Anonymousreply 24June 11, 2022 2:25 PM

Exactly. He was wanted for Miglin and the two guys he used to date.

by Anonymousreply 25June 11, 2022 2:51 PM

His only actually ā€œhotā€ photo, as I recall.

by Anonymousreply 26June 11, 2022 4:23 PM

Criss doesn't look even remotely look like him.

by Anonymousreply 27June 11, 2022 4:41 PM

That's what half white half Filipinos look like

by Anonymousreply 28June 11, 2022 4:44 PM

R15, DL was around and as R16 said, a lot of gossip was focused around Lee Miglin.

I remember being on an old usenet group called alt, fashion and somehow it came out one of the shills selling makeup was his daughter. I dont know if she was hiding that to minimize her wealth or bc of the gay controversy. I forgot where Miglin got his money and am too lazy to look it up.

Also one car/truck he stole in NJ put the owner on his FWB list but apparently he was a straight guy who didn't know him and just had his vehicle stolen.

Versace murder was a shock.

by Anonymousreply 29June 11, 2022 4:52 PM

R27 - I disagree; Criss gave a great performance and is reasonably the same ā€œtype.ā€ Biopic actors are always better looking than the people they portray, and often not even this close physically.

Who would you have cast instead?

by Anonymousreply 30June 11, 2022 5:10 PM

Datalounge claim to have been around since 1995 but doubt there was much to it or had much of a following in 1997?

by Anonymousreply 31June 11, 2022 5:19 PM

Someone ethnic shoulda portrayed him. Not a white fucker like Criss.

by Anonymousreply 32June 11, 2022 5:37 PM

R32 knows Criss is half Filipino himself.

by Anonymousreply 33June 11, 2022 5:44 PM

There were far fewer posts and posters in 1997.

by Anonymousreply 34June 11, 2022 5:44 PM

The Dominick Dunne book and the Ryan Murphy miniseries on him were both good.

by Anonymousreply 35June 11, 2022 5:45 PM

[quote]If DL had been in existence, I presume there would have been a fair number of forgives because he had a hot shirtless picture.

It was probably 20 years ago or so, but we had a thread once where several people were still quite shaken, because they were sure they had run into Cunanan before the murder spree. I didn't get the impression people would have forgiven him because he was hot, they were somewhat freaked out.

There was no forum on DL in 1997. I have uncovered a link to what DL looked like back then! For your enjoyment!

Criss is whiter than the KKK. Just because his adoptive fam are "filipino" doesn't make him that.

by Anonymousreply 37June 11, 2022 5:48 PM

Thanks forum 36. If you clicked on the topic areas there were long single thread forums though.

by Anonymousreply 38June 11, 2022 6:13 PM

R36 - if you click on the ā€˜97 Wrap-Up link Cunanan is Question #2 in the poll!

by Anonymousreply 40June 11, 2022 6:35 PM

I know we werenā€™t supposed to think it. But I thought he was cute as fuck

I remember reading somewhere that his favourite song was ā€œYou Think You Know Herā€ by Cause and Effect. Random factoid stuck in my mind along with something about him stiffing friends not paying for an ostrich steak dinner!

by Anonymousreply 43June 11, 2022 7:26 PM

And where did you get this information that he's adopted from r37?

she was just another self-loathing treacherous vindictive dissolute bitter kaweeen.

Wasnā€™t there a rumor here that Cunanan posted on DL? Or was it a different serial killer?

by Anonymousreply 49June 12, 2022 3:51 AM

by Anonymousreply 50June 12, 2022 5:05 AM

Darren as Cunanan.

by Anonymousreply 51June 12, 2022 5:16 AM

There weren't forums at the time, r49, so he couldn't have posted here. You may be thinking of Luka Magnotta.

by Anonymousreply 52June 12, 2022 6:35 AM

During initial coverage of his spree killing some of the newscasters pronounced his name a Coo-na-NAN which sounds so weird now.

by Anonymousreply 53June 12, 2022 7:59 AM

[quote] Someone ethnic shoulda portrayed him. Not a white fucker like Criss.

Andrew Cunanan was half-Filipino. So is Darren Criss.

by Anonymousreply 54June 12, 2022 8:04 AM

I was a hairdresser at this elegant brownstone Aveda Salon in Boston that summer and the manicurist and I would delightedly scare the heck out of each other, convincing ourselves weā€™d seen him somewhere along the gay South End at the time, sitting at Tremont Ice Cream or the then new and obnoxiously expensive Franchescaā€™s Cafe. The Motorola cellphone I owned at the time cost around $2 a call, a $300 bill every month so Iā€™d really have to think if I wanted to call someone before 8pm. We lived through the gay rags and face to face gossip- not especially online yet. The South End was a gay ghetto then, with gorgeous, out men and gay operated businesses everywhere. It really was a different time.

Laurie was a terrible manicurist and I bought several liters of Pepsi and put them at her station, offering one free to get people to get a manicure with her. We called her ā€œGougeā€ in front of the clients. Then Diana died and we promptly forgot all about him until Versace did too.

Amazingly, she came from a wealthy family, went back to Cornell, and became a licensed and successful psychotherapist.

by Anonymousreply 55June 12, 2022 8:19 AM

R7 Oh, dear! Yes, I meant Versaceā€™s funeral!šŸ˜‘šŸ˜„

by Anonymousreply 56June 12, 2022 9:31 AM

I hang out at The Townhouse and we were just talking about him the other day. A bartender was telling me that he was having an affair with a patron (an upper east side interior designer, long since deceased) that he assumed was wealthy. The joke was on him because the guy was nowhere near as wealthy as he thought. But yeah, Cunanan went to the bar many times apparently, enough times that when his name hit the news the elders there had plenty to talk about.

by Anonymousreply 57June 12, 2022 10:16 AM

R57 here. Sorry, I should have said the bartender told me CUNANAN had an affair with a patron. I havenā€™t finished my coffee.

by Anonymousreply 58June 12, 2022 10:17 AM

There were forums here then. It isnā€™t obvious from that front page, but by clicking around you can get to them. This is the link to the forum categories page.

After the initial criticism this thread has taken off well.

by Anonymousreply 60June 12, 2022 11:10 AM

Partially Ornamental = tinymeat.

by Anonymousreply 61June 12, 2022 11:47 AM

The recent talk of a connection with The Townhouse is probably because it is discussed in the relatively recent book "Last Call: A True Story of Love, Lust, and Murder in Queer New York" by Elon Green. Published in 2021.

That's where I read about the him being at the bar, though Cunanan has nothing to do with the subject of the book. It's just one of the random details the author uses to fill pages.

The book got raves, but while the subject of the book was important and interesting, I was disappointed and thought the book was a failure.

by Anonymousreply 62June 12, 2022 2:18 PM

R46 He is proud of his white heritage then that makes him a white supremacist. Fuck him.

by Anonymousreply 63June 12, 2022 4:08 PM

I've long thought that from certain angles Meghan Markle and Andrew Cunanan could be brother and sister.

Anyone else see a resemblance?

by Anonymousreply 64June 12, 2022 4:14 PM

R62, I just put a hold on the book at the library. But reading your description makes me wonder if I've already tried to read it and gave up. Plus "Queer" New York. Who needs that nonsense?

by Anonymousreply 65June 12, 2022 4:15 PM

R65

Yeah, "Queer New York". I'm one of the people that hate the word used by gay folk, but it really fries me when straight people use it, which the author is. As a child, straight (presumably) people used "queer" to attack me, now straight people use it to be cool. Great. I've come so far.

I almost gave up on the book, more than once. I just gritted my teeth through the fluff so I could read about the meat of the story. Plus, it had a good deal of info about the NYC Anti-Violence Project, which I volunteered for in the early days, so I was interested in its evolution after I left the organization and left NY. I think the book is interesting if you've ever lived in NYC because it cites so many familiar people and places. For instance, lots about The Five Oaks (which is involved) and Marie Blake, and I spent a lot of time there before these murders happened.

Try reading it since it's from the library. I wouldn't encourage people to buy it.

Then again, it got raves, as I mentioned. Some of the negative reviews on Amazon are right on about the book's failings. Not that I usually use those Amazon reviews as my go to.

by Anonymousreply 66June 12, 2022 5:03 PM

R66 I just opened the book on my kindle, and it turns out I've read 85% of it already. I started the first chapter, with the body found in Pennsylvania, and I remember reading it before. I think I'll continue. I used to go to Marie's Crisis a lot when I lived in the Village. A friend would sing there every other week or so.

by Anonymousreply 67June 12, 2022 5:17 PM

I followed the case quite closely & found Cunanan very attractive, even though it's probably not politically correct to say so.

At the time he was on the lam/dead on the houseboat, I was housesitting at my Grandma's in the Bay Area. I remember locking all the doors & putting the alarm on, lest Andrew somehow make it to the neighborhood. I was watching CNN or whatever broadcast live as they were tear gassing his dead body inside the houseboat.

I watched Ryan Murphy's show & agree that Dareen Criss did an outstanding job, & yes, he does bear some physical resemblance to Cunanan.

by Anonymousreply 68June 12, 2022 8:40 PM

IMO Andrew was a fucking homicidal maniac. OK? And I have to wonder who else he killed? The way he was shown in the mini series, and in Dominic Donne leads me to think there were others. Another thing: I resent that somehow all of his lunacy was tied to his self loathing Gayness. Being Gay was what energized his murderous impulses. But I think he was psycho with or without being Gay. I'm sick and tired of us being portrayed as pedophiles or psychos...or both.

by Anonymousreply 69June 12, 2022 10:53 PM

His being gay was incidental to his crimes R69. I would classify him as a spree killer rather than a serial killer. His murders were not for sexual gratification or ritualistic, Altho some were motivated by revenge. He def was high as fuck most of the time and I think he prob killed a couple more ppl too.

by Anonymousreply 70June 13, 2022 10:07 PM

I lived in Denver at the time and there were rumors he came through just before his first murder. One eldergay I used to know claimed they did a pile of drugs together and fucked. Then again, a lot of old, white queens at the time thought anyone slightly brown and good looking might be Cunanan. So who knows.
