MSNBC - Part 38
[quote] Dang, is Jamie Raskin EXTREMELY short, or is Garrett Haake EXTREMELY tall?
Numerous sites list Garrett Haake's height as 5' 11", which can't be accurate. One has him at 6' 4", a lot more plausible.

R19 why did they get rid of Craig Melvin? He was fine and certainly a thousand times better than icky, oily Jose Thingy. As for Andrea Mitchell, at least once a week firing her old Republican ass and her protege Chuckie Todd gets trending on twitter. Mitchell can't even spit out a coherent sentence anymore. Somebody on the last thread pointed out MSNBC does better under Republican presidents. That's probably true, but it's part of the problem. MSNBC never successfully recalibrated after Trump lost. It's all Trump this and Trump that. Now I will grant you that January 6th was a huge story. However, in this large and diverse country, other news does occasionally break. They could cover other things once in a while.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | June 11, 2022 11:56 PM

I've gotten to where I watch Shep Smith at 6 on CNBC because at least he covers more news than MSNBC does. MSNBC is just each anchor giving their take on the same fucking story. All day long. They're Fox News' identical twin these days - no news, just pundit spinning.

[quote] Give Garrett the 8pm hour. He'd really be good at a format similar to the old Kasie DC show.
I'd love to see Garrett with a prime time show. MSNBC needs some new blood in its weeknight lineup, which has gotten stale. But I doubt it will ever happen because Garrett probably sees himself anchoring Meet the Press or Nightly News one day. Being a prime-time anchor on MSNBC would paint him as a liberal (even if he tried to be "balanced" on his show), making it difficult for him to later make the move back to NBC News. Once you become a prime-time MSNBC anchor, there really is nowhere else to go (which is why Chris Hayes and Lawrence O'Donnell will never leave unless they're forced out). Garrett could do a daytime or weekend show, though.

R49 I agree, but I think would depend on the type of show Garrett was hosting on MSNBC. Obviously, Rachel Maddow will never have Lester Holt's job because she's seen as an opinion show host. But Shepard Smith could be because his show is more of a straight newscast. If Garrett had a show that was light on punditry and opinion, he might not hurt himself on the Nightly News fast track.

Interesting segment on CBS Sunday Morning on Katy Tur and her fractured relationship with her father who transitioned more than a dozen years ago into a woman. She's never forgiven him for what she deems her/his abusive and irrational behavior when still married married to Katy's mother. I am glad that Lawrence O'Donnell is not participating in this bull shit of making Pence some sort of hero. Pence did what he is suppose to do, absolutely nothing more. Pence went seeking out anyone outside Trump's orbit who would tell him he could do what Trump wanted, he only decided not to violate the constitution when he could find zero experts who would agree with Trump. Then he waited until the absolute last minute to say he wouldn't bend to Trump's demands. If he had said so sooner the sacking of the Capitol Building might have been avoided, some of them might have thought why make the trip, Pence isn't going to do what we want.
Same with Judge Michael Luttig, claiming he would lay down in the road to stop Pence from violating the constitution. No one knew what Pence was going to do for sure until the last few minutes. If Luttig had gone on Fox News, saying what Trump wanted was bullshit who knows what effect that might have been, instead he did nothing.

I agree with Jason Johnson on Morning Joe earlier who said people like Rusty Bowers aren't examples of Profiles in Courage because up until that point, they supported Trump.
Johnson argued that Trump had been doing some variation of that since he ran for president, including encouraging violence against all sorts of people at his rallies, naming names on Twitter and calling people out.
Johnson said people like Rusty Bowers basically had a Meatloaf moment where they'll do anything for Trump, but that won't do that.
In contrast, the really courageous people were those like Shaye Moss and her grandmother - regular people who didn't have security and have paid people to protect them from the MAGA mob who made their lives miserable.

More importantly, it seems to have taken a toll on his brain cells, R211:
[quote]June 22, 2022, 12:27 PM PDT; By Hayes Brown, MSNBC Opinion Columnist
[quote]Arizona House Speaker Russell “Rusty” Bowers’ voice wavered as he spoke to the House Jan. 6 committee Tuesday about his belief in a divinely inspired Constitution. His conviction was clear when describing the offense he took at former President Donald Trump asking him to break the law. In testimony that’s being likened to Jimmy Stewart in “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” Bowers said violating the Constitution “because somebody just asked me to is foreign to my very being.”
[quote]Like the fellow Republicans who joined him on Tuesday’s panel, Bowers was willing to speak the taboo that has condemned so many of Republicans: Trump lost the 2020 election to Joe Biden and tried to persuade officials like Bowers to help him illegally stay in office. But Bowers stood out for his simple yet eloquent musings on the nature of courage and democracy.
[quote]It was easy to get lost in the moment that Bowers created — but then reality comes crashing in. In an interview with the Associated Press, Bowers said of Trump: “If he is the nominee, if he was up against Biden, I’d vote for him again. Simply because what he did the first time, before Covid, was so good for the country. In my view it was great.”
[quote]Those three short sentences burn away the patina of bravery that Bowers had cloaked himself in and undoes any of the admiration I’d had for him as he testified on Tuesday. Because what is the point of a principle if it is only adhered to in moments of extreme duress? What does it say that once the moment of danger has passed, the driving force behind that danger is once again welcomed with open arms?...

I am fairly certain the room you mention, R254, is Mr. Katyal's den or study.
Today's comments were relevant and focused until the trolls showed up; it's good so many remained quiet and refused to correspond with them.
See you in July, folks.

The Post's Jackie Alemany got it wrong on Nicole's show. In the context of talking about whether the January 6 committee would entertain Mo Brook's demand that he testify only live before the panel. She said that Alexander Butterfield revealed his knowledge of the White House taping operation to the Senate Watergate committee. That it hadn't come up before his live testimony. That's erroneous history.

R317: Sad, isn't it? Some "head stylist" is attempting a hybrid coiffure for that Reid woman. He bleached her hair and slapped a similarly colored wiglet atop, then tried to blend the two. Sadly, someone forgot to straighten her hair to match the hairpiece's texture, leaving nappy patches colliding with smooth. What a mess.
And don't even get me started on her "kitchen!"

Are you posting from the year 1983 or something? Dupont Circle (there is no big “P” in Dupont) has not been the center of gay life in D.C. for 15-20 years, if not longer. I think it all began when Ann Taylor moved onto Connecticut Avenue and the strollers began rolling in.
