Sophia Loren
She was for quite a long time considered the most beautiful and alluring woman in the world. And she was the first leading actress to win an Oscar for a performance in another language.
And she is considere done of the first stars to have a perfume named after her and then amrketed around her (which opened the flood gates for so many others).
But she's kind of forgotten now. And she's still alive.

She was never considered a beauty. She was sexy and voluptuous. Her facial features have always been coarse and hard.

She took great care of her skin...

Gay men... interested in female movie stars?
Why, who ever heard of such a thing!! It's an outrage!

I don’t think she’s forgotten, but I went to IMDb to look up her recent work (I know she did The Life Ahead in 2020) and typed in her name.
I stopped at Sophia L, and she wasn’t the top choice. She was outranked by the girl who played the young version of Jessica Chastain’s character in It, which feels wrong in so many different ways.

Of course she's White.
She has looked very tired for 20 years. Maybe it's all the surgeries pulling her skin. Exhausting.

R2, she is one of the most beautiful human beings of all time. She’s not classically beautiful but the whole is spectacular. If you ever saw her in person you’d practically gasp. I have, twice.

She’s divine looking. She never made a film I wanted to see twice, however.

I love that old perfume commercial. When it said “Sophia” I’d whisper “jailbird” in response, since she was in tax trouble at the time.

The power of the publicity machine. I’ve never really understood her appeal. Same with Greta Garbo and many other “beauties of the silver screen”.

No. She was just poor. Though I suppose marrying a producer more than twice your age is a type of prostitution, anyway.

"Marriage Italian Style " is one of my desert island movies.
Beautiful performance by Loren which earned her a second AA nomination. She´s a wonderful comedian! The special magic of Mastroianni and Loren under the direction of de Sica is as unique and unrepeatable as the Marlene /Sternberg combo.

No, R17. I think the story goes that she was prostituted by her grandmother to GIs during the war.
She was 12 years old.

One of my all time favourite pictures. Happens to be Sophia Loren. Odd features but the sum is somehow beautiful. Quite unique.

R23 Where? On CDAN? She married a rich old man when she was 15 or 16, but she was never a prostitute. It would have been much more common knowledge if she was, especially today because she’s so old and her time has passed. Why are there hooker rumors about every single actress considered a beauty? The Michelle Pfeiffer ones never made sense to me either. Loren was at least known to be in abject poverty during the war, Pfeiffer was just a lower middle class LA girl.

R2 No, she was absolutely considered quite beautiful at her peak. R23 I don't believe those rumors. As r26 points out people always spread those rumors about gorgeous actresses ( I don't believe the Pfeiffer rumors either).

I thought long and hard about this, and with apologies to De Sica I've probably seen Grumpier Old Men more than any other Loren film.

Carlo Ponti, that tall, thin, gorgeous thing, wasn’t monogamous with Loren. Perhaps she wasn’t to him either. Perhaps they were fine with that and it made their marriage work.
My point is, that should disabuse anybody of the notion that physical beauty is somehow a hedge against infidelity.
Larry King interviewed Loren. I found her to be less than interesting, but man, in my eyes she’s one of the most beautiful women, ever.

I've loved some of Loren's performances -- she is spectacularly good in Two Women, the film for which she won the Oscar -- but I never warmed to her, her aloof, somewhat snobbish personality and overwhelming vanity turned me off. Among Italian sexpot actresses of that era, I always preferred Claudia Cardinale, who starred in several of my favorite movies that I've seen multiple times -- particularly Once Upon a Time in the West -- but also, imho, was more beautiful and had a more earthy, generous personality.

A funny thing about that picture is that Sophia is quite busty herself, she’s just side eyeing Jayne’s PR slut ways.

No, I'm not that poster, but I've read that story in several places. I am also a historian of that period and it seems entirely plausible. People did things in that era to get by that are hard to fathom today.

Sure, but just because something SEEMS plausible (poor Italian girl in/following World War 2 becomes a prostitute to support herself) doesn't mean it happened. With someone as ubiquitous as Loren, it would have been exposed on a grand scale eventually, everything I've read about that story exists on gossip boards. Ironically, it was partially the plot of her Oscar winning movie - Two Women. G

Not necessarily. There were a lot of people invested in her career and positioned to keep stories like that out of the press.

R29 She is still quite beautiful. However--
Why is the larger inner part of her lower lip so smooth, while the outer part is so fleshy and wrinkled? I know she's old, I'm not saying she's not allowed to look her age, and it is possible to be both old and beautiful, as she is, but I have never seen that lip situation on another person.
She's never tried to hide the fact that she's drawn on her eyebrows-- they were sometimes so exaggerated that they looked surreal, but it still worked somehow-- but that harsh shape in R29's photo is more responsible for her aged appearance than anything else. She needs an arch. It's like she's drawn on old lady brows for an old lady character she's playing.
