I thought it was a fun movie but stupid. But I know people who get mad when I say it’s stupid and speak of it like it’s a masterpiece lol. It isn’t.
Helen Slater was so lanky.

What the hell earrings was she wearing? In a street fight they are just going grab that and rip her earlobe right off.

I thought Keith Gordon has always been odd looking, but I thought he looked cute in this movie.

Loved it! We moved halfway across the country in the summer of 86 when I was 16, and my sisters and I hadn't met any kids yet, so we watched TV most of the day, including a daily viewing of this movie on HBO.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | June 5, 2022 11:57 PM |
Lisa Simpson was in this.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | June 5, 2022 11:58 PM |
Wow R7!!! Almost same story here. We were watching at the same time! (And it takes place in the summer in the heat of TX, so it was a perfect summer movie!

I was disappointed to learn that Helen Slater and Christian Slater are not related.

R7 and R9 me, too! Moved across the country that summer and watched it all summer long. I was 14 going on 15.

I love this movie, one of my favorites growing up! Yes, it's silly and over the top at times, but I love many of the themes: the sexploitation of Billie Jean, the way a story can spin out of control when it's narrative instead of fact driven (a lesson our political media still hasn't learned), that these kids are scared and make kid mistakes (as opposed to making them some kind of manipulative mastermind geniuses), and that even well meaning adults can ruin kids lives by refusing to listen.
I also love that montage of kids who form an underground network to help Billie Jean hide out and reunite with her brother.

How many times was the word SCOOTER spoken in this film? 1000?

My childhood friend and I saw this when it first came out. I think what we wanted to see was sold out and neither one of us heard of this but it was starting in a minute so we took a chance. Had no expectations so we loved it. We were also 16.

Loved when the neighborhood kids implored Billie Jean to help out the kid who was being abused by his drunk father.
It could have been really cheesy but the way it was filmed and Slater's acting really sold it and made it quite poignant.
Christian Slater was so cute in this.
Hubie Pyatt needed a good assfucking to set him straight!

Not a big fan of the movie but I LOVED the song.

R14, not as many times as the name Carol Anne is spoken in Poltergeist. A friend and I decided to play a drinking game while watching Poltergeist many years ago. Drink every time someone says her name. Do NOT do this with shots. We did shots, and drank beer, in addition to a drink we invented called Pineapple Jazz, and we were obliterated long before the end of the movie.

I loved that montage and for some reason I loved the shot of her riding with some guy on a motorcycle to avoid the cops.

While I'd heard the Pat Benetar song, I'd never actually seen the movie until I decided to watch it on a lark tonight. To my complete surprise, I found it pretty charming. Helen Slater and Peter Coyote gave much better performances than the material probably deserved.
Helen has described it as "The one where Lisa Simpson gets her period."

I was also a kid at the time and loved this movie. HBO played it nonstop. I haven't seen it in eons, I wonder if it would still hold up.

R21- I am about to find it online and see.
Almost 44 and fucking watched this film 30 times between 86-88.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | July 17, 2022 1:41 AM |
Why would you expect it to “hold”? Watching it at your age now it’s not gonna be nearly as cool when you were a kid or teen.

I liked it because of it's anti-capitalist and feminist message which while convoluted in a typical 80s way, still knocked the ball out the park. The idea of a viral VHS tape and Billie Jean being misinterpreted as soon type of political activist turned into a manufactured image on merchandise without her consent is pretty relevant in the social media age. Not only was she sexually harrased, bullied by the rich family in town and then later had her image exploited to profit. It basically criticized misogyny, classism and unethical capitalism masterfully. Heathers is another one that is more relevant today too.

Made all the more surprising by its release at the height of the Reagan administration. I liked that as well.
Also, our sisters probably found Helen Slater delightful when she hacked off her hair.

Keith Gordon who played Billie Jean's boyfriend. Directed The Chocolate War which was a pretty good movie, starring Ilan Mitchell-Smith (from Weird Science) and Courtney Stodden's ex husband. The Yazoo troll probably knows it.

This and Supergirl ended Slater's movie career.

Invincible (the title song) was a top ten hit for Pay Benetar
by Anonymous | reply 31 | July 17, 2022 2:14 AM |
Apparently Pat Benetar really really hated this movie and was a reason it took a while for a DVD/blu-ray release to happen. She didn't want her song "Invincible" attached to the film.

R32- BULLSHIT! No way!
Her last hit was in 1989.
The balls on this PIGLET.

I kind of felt bad for Martha Gehman who played Ophelia. Her mother is Estelle Parsons. Poor Martha's acting career didn't take off.
