Mine is the Labrador Retriever. An all around friendly dog. I don’t really care for the little yappers that aggressively bark every time the wind blows.
What is your favorite dog breed?

by Anonymous | reply 4 | June 4, 2022 5:39 AM |
I like pitties, too, but only ones that are well trained. They are so smart and affectionate. But they’re prone to obesity, weeping eyes, and they shed like crazy.
My love is for spaniels. Cocker spaniels especially. Easy to train, gentle, compliant, and they don’t shed.
I currently have two other breeds and absolutely loathe the miniature schnauzer. I have never hated a dog before.

Pit bulls and mixes can be cute but they see kids, cats, and smaller dogs as prey and they are untrustworthy. Their temperament turns on a breeze. I'll never trust them and don't bring them anywhere near me or anyone I care about.

My niece has Dorkie(dachshund, yorkie mix) and she has absolutely made my heart melt. I grew up with big dogs(Doberman, Lab Mix, and Golden Retriever) and never liked little ankle biter dogs, but this one is different.
I’ve had her at the house while my niece is in school and I woke up one morning and the puppy was sitting outside my bedroom door stretched out with her favorite bone toy right next to her looking up with her little hound dog eyes looking up at me ready to play fetch.

We rescued our second Maltese last August. She was in a hoarder situation with 21 other dogs. It took months before she wagged her tail. She is such a love, she is currently sleeping on a pillow inches from my head. She is nine and we will give her the best life possible for her remaining years.

Westies. Cute as a button, don't shed, not yappy, peaceloving. (Maltese are terrible yappers and snappers.) Smart and easy to train but stubborn as hell, so without a bribe they will look at you like you're speaking Martian when you ask them to do something they've already learnt. With a bribe, it's done in a flash.
They're very entertaining and so cute that nearly everyone smiles at you as you walk past with them. That's surprisingly uplifting.

Never met a dog I didn’t like or that didn’t like me.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | June 4, 2022 3:57 PM |
I am glad some reasonable entries about pitties have been made above. They *can* be good, loving dogs but yes, definite care in selecting them and training them has to occur. My sister had a beautiful, sweet girl but she was a pit/lab mix and often if the dog is a mixture with another sweet dog, like a lab or boxer, it's a good situation.
The BF and I love bigger dogs (technically medium dogs, as most people think of Danes or heavy dogs over 100 lbs as large). Appearance alone, I love the weimaraners and vizslas - which look somewhat similar in size and coat. They're just so graceful. I also love the silliness of boxers, and the mostly sweet temperaments of labs.
I love dachshunds as well. Not a fan of most yippy little dogs. Unfortunately, everyone around me has either barky little bitches or foofy poodles, and I am not a fan of either.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | June 4, 2022 4:05 PM |
(the photo of the vizsla about looks a bit more hound-ish but they are generally much more elegant appearing than that, more like a weimy.)

by Anonymous | reply 73 | June 4, 2022 4:10 PM |
All of the brachycephalic dog breeds (pugs, French bulldogs, English bulldogs, Boston terriers, etc) are cute and sweet, but their genetics lead to so many health problems that the humane thing would be not to breed any more of them and let the breeds dies out. It's a little cruel to keep bringing them into the world when they can barely breath properly, but such is the arrogance of man.

Some are yappers. My first Maltese rarely barked, but we lived in a rural area and there wasn't much stimulus. I love Boston Terriers, too! Mine is just such a happy little soul. She gets along with all other animals and people and is equally fond of both vigorous play and extreme laziness. I like how sturdy she is, despite her small size--I don't really care for delicate little dogs. Bonus points for ease of grooming and no doggie odor.
I will say that her extreme level of affection could be off-putting to some people. She is kind of a predatory kisser/licker.

My husband and I have two dogs, and they're night-and-day different in demeanor.
Our rough collie is a dream pet. Supremely intelligent, so well-trained and compliant, with a large repertoire of abilities on command. She even understands all her commands in two different languages. She's also beautiful and noble. If I cold clone her several times, I would. She has full roam of the house and is completely trustworthy and protective of us and our other pets (dog, cats, and birds).
The Saluki (Persian greyhound), on the other hand, is a terminal pain in the ass. He's already nine months old, and he is still not completely potty-trained. He will eliminate in the house if not watched like a hawk, and he refuses to learn how to ring a bell as our collie does when she has to go out. He is not stupid but is quite devious; he ignores all commands and acts aloof and distracted in order to avoid cooperating or being trained. He is also tall, so he steals food and things off of tables. He loves to destroy tchotchkes and destroyed a number of valuable ones in my collection the moment my back was turned. He can't be trusted and has to sleep in a crate every night. I still don't know why my husband insisted on getting this wretched animal; I wanted another collie. I wish I could re-home him (the dog, not my husband).

OMG r105. Adorable.
I am gone too much to have a dog, but I love them. Luckily, I have friends with some awesome dogs. I can get my “dog fix” with them.
One I sometimes dog sit Is a Blue Heeler mix. He is an awesome dog. Smaller than most of that breed, he is also very shy around other dogs. I think he was not treated well before they rescued him. He loves to snuggle with me and be a slug, but he also loves going to the park, running around, fetch, etc. I don’t think I’ve ever even heard him bark.
Another I love is a Rottweiler. She’s an old sweet girl some friends found on the street. She loves nothing more than just putting her big sweet head in your lap and letting you pet her for hours. Her only draw back is her farts, oh my god! She can clear a room in 5 seconds!
I also sometimes dog sit 2 Cavapoo brothers. I’ve never been into little dogs, but I love these guys. They can be headstrong, and they drive their owners crazy with some of their shenanigans, but they are always well behaved with me.
I hope to get a dog one day, and I will get a rescue..a “mutt” is fine with me. That said, ANOTHER friend got a Bernedoodle last year, and he is absolutely beautiful. I just don’t see my paying $3000 for a dog…
My cat is never happy when I get home and bring in these “dog smells”, haha. I guess I am more of a cat person, and I love my cat probably too much…but there are things you get from a dog that aren’t necessarily better—just different.

The total prize money at Roland Garros for 2022 comes in at €43.6 million, which is up 26.87% compared to 2021 (+2.20% compared to 2019, when the tournament was last held under normal conditions)
The men's and women's champions will take home a cheque for €2,200,000, which is 57.14% more than Novak Djokovic and Barbora Krejikova received when they lifted the trophies last year.
The runner up can also look forward to a healthy €1,100,000 landing in their bank account, a 46.67% increase compared to last year.
It's not just those who make the latter stages that benefit from a pay rise either. Players making an early first-round exit can look forward to a €62,000 paycheque, up 3.33% from last year.
While losers in the first round of qualifying will take home €14,000, which is a 40% boost vs twelve months ago.

I'm thinking of getting either a Westie or a Boston Terrier. Is there a shedding issue with either breed? Do Boston's leave little hairs everywhere? What's the grooming schedule like with these breeds? I'm looking for a dog with no shedding and minimal to no grooming, just an occasional bath.
by Anonymous | reply 133 | June 5, 2022 8:48 PM |
Former dog groomer and current Boston Terrier owner here: Westies are essentially a non-shedding breed but require regular grooming (clipping for pets; hand-stripped for show).
Bostons do shed a bit but much less than some other short-haired breeds (pugs shed year-round 24/7, for instance). They are very low maintenance from a grooming standpoint.
Some coarse-coated terriers (fox, Westie, Australian, Norfolk, etc.) can have very strong doggie odor that can be hard to control, even with frequent bathing. Bostons are more or less odor free (other than farts).

My auntie always had Lhasa Apsos. At first I was wary of them. But as I got to know them they’re really cute funny dogs! Very loving and protective as well. Her dogs usually have a teddy bear cut. They were never the long silky types.

I never really liked Chihuahuas before. That was until I met a friend’s mother’s Chihuahua. My friend was constantly babysitting this dog. One time I came over to her place and the dog was there. I never met the dog before but we instantly bonded! She was such a sweetheart! My friend would tell her when I was coming over and she would get excited! I miss that Chihuahua!

You should rehome the dog while he’s still a puppy. It would less traumatic for both of you to do it now instead of older. Let him have a better life where he’s wanted.

Dachshunds have that adorable way of looking at you, but I've read they're often bred for a low-slung body that produces health problems. Not a practice you'd want to encourage.
Apparently some other breeds are also susceptible to bad breeding practices, and you might want to consider this when choosing a dog.
by Anonymous | reply 157 | June 6, 2022 7:29 AM |
R157 dachshunds don't have a ton of health issues but the serious one is their back and hind legs.
Too many owners applaud when doxies jump up or down from high heights (for them) but it often impacts their spine and hind legs.
by Anonymous | reply 158 | June 6, 2022 11:02 AM |
And yes, they were bred to be long and low to the ground. "Dachs hund" is literally "badger dog" in German - they were bred to chase badgers and other animals that burrow.

One of the greatest dogs I’ve ever known was a Pomeranian/Chihuahua mix. He belonged to a good friend of mine and lived to 14. Sweet, affectionate, and a beautiful black, brown, and white coat. Everyone in my friend group loved him and we were all devastated when he died.

Did you have these in sequence or at one time? If in sequence, you're a terrible dog owner as you killed them all before their time. If simultaneously, your house must smell.

My sister has two dogs I love. Both are rescues and the breeds are guesses based on their appearances.
One, who I adore so much, is probably mostly an American dingo dog/Carolina dog. She is so intelligent that she never has a confused look on her face and always seems to know what is going on. As a puppy, she watched my dad walk into his garage and the other dogs stayed at the garage door and she walked to the front window to watch the car drive away. She is really gentle and sweet with me and I find her company to be a calming experience, but she can be a brat to my sister. She knows how to open doors by turning doorknobs, she waits for everyone to be a good distance away and then will silently dismantle the trash, etc.
The other one is thought to be an Australian cattle dog/red heeler. He is a real-life Scooby Doo. He is smart but he seems dopey and has a goofy attitude/sense of humor. He's pretty large but he tries to be a lapdog sometimes, and when he climbs on a person while they are sitting, he seems to laugh along with them and often will get excited. He's just very sweet, and he's protective of the other, older dog while being deferential to her.
My sister loves the red heeler so much she sought out another one. She found one. She's a little psychopath. She has a scary gaze. Most dogs don't like to make eye contact but she will just stare right at anyone and occasionally will growl and snap. She bit a kid at a dog park when she was young. They think she was abused somehow as a puppy, and she has softened, but she still looks like she's wired wrong to me and I am afraid of her.
I think dogs are individuals and that breed is not a very reliable predictor of their natures.

by Anonymous | reply 178 | June 9, 2022 7:27 AM |
Alabai (Central Asian Sheep Dog or Wolf Crusher). One of the world's biggest and strongest dogs, as well as one of the most ancient and rare breeds. It was bred to protect sheep from wolves and bears. It is extremely loyal and loving to his own family, amazing with children and other animals, but can be extremely vicious and deadly to strangers and that's why must be trained to perfection. Assholes around the world like to use alabais for dog fights.

R177 These healers (blue and red) are super trendy and popular right now. I have several friends who are entrepreneurial and hip, into fitness and climbing and paddle boarding. They all have or want these blue healers. But the breed itself is complex to live with, and some end up in shelters because the bite shins and ankles. Your description “wired wrong” is exactly what many of these dogs seem like. They’re really cool and interesting, but wow are they complex to socialize with humans.

Heelers are working farm dogs but urban yuppies & fitness influencers have no regard for that fact, which is the*only* reason they’re problematic. When they can herd cattle like they were born to do, they’re great to have around.

I’m intrigued by the sight hounds-salukis, borzois, whippets. But I’ve never owned bc I don’t think I could give him the exercise he’s intended for. That, plus I’ve heard they’re escape artists & when they dash out the front door, you just have to get in your car & drive til you find them. That’s too much work
I hate the flat faced dogs like pugs & Boston’s & yes those awful frenchies bc they’re too hyper, always snorting & farting & I’ve yet to meet one that seems to have any intelligence
We own a black lab & he’s easily trained & a wonderful family dog. He’s lazy & prone to get fat but he’s never been destructive or too energetic

[quote] When they can herd cattle like they were born to do, they’re great to have around.
Many dogs are like this. They aren't bad or vicious dogs, but they're bred over hundreds of years to be "working" dogs. When someone adopts a dog like this and wants them to be a stuffed animal that walks, rolls over, pants and farts, it's an issue on the human's end of things, not with the dog.

I had to take my niece's Golden Retriever because one of her kids was allergic and her ex-husband flipped out that she was getting allergy shots for the kid. The dog was under a year old and she did a horrible job training him. I worked with a trainer for a couple of weeks and he is as good as gold. He rarely barks or gets excited except when we go to the beach or a lake and he is feeling pure bliss in the water. He was in the Long Island Sound when the water was about 40 degrees. Now I don't take him to the beach in the winter because I can't keep him out of the water. After that time, I gave him a bath when we got home and the expression on his face said that the bath was totally worth it and he'd do it again.
When he sees my niece and the kids he's playful and hangs out with them -- until he's had enough and goes off to find a quiet spot. I don't think he misses his old life at all.

I have had rescued Greyhounds since 2006. I like the fact that they are very quiet and easy to deal with. My two have been fawn and red fawn even though I thought they would be brindle. The first one was extremely friendly (not the case with some of them) but a little short in brain power. The last one is very smart.
by Anonymous | reply 198 | June 14, 2022 12:54 AM |
Our greyhounds were great, they just liked relaxing, unlike our cattle dogs. Our golden retriever was very energetic, much more so than our labs. I feel like a happy medium would be poodles. Ours was a standard and very tall, almost as tall as our Great Dane, but very intelligent like an Akita, which we had to give away for being too smart. Sometimes I enjoy dumb dogs too like the bulldogs we used to have. I enjoyed them much more than our French bulldogs which cost a fortune. My partner likes his little yappy dogs like chiwawas, pugs, terriers and poms. I always tell him to keep them away from me, lol. Never had German Shepherds or pit bulls but thise are definitely next on my list.
