Anyone Else Love Jazz Singer, Cleo Laine? "Control Yourself".

Mom had this album back in the seventies and we'd both sing along with it. I also loved Cleo on "The Muppets". Talent, beauty and class. Bitches, take note.

oP I had to do a double take, I thought that was my 6th grade caftanned teacher!

Control yourself, contain yourself Restrict yourself, restrain yourself And always let tranquility be your goal Control yourself, contain yourself And if you can't, explain yourself And try to act agreeably on the whole Life is far too short to spend it in a huff Try to be the sort of guy who laughs When things get rough

Never heard of her but she's great. Pretty. Her caftans flutter nicely in the breeze because you've got to air that out from time to time.

listening to cleo laine tonight / surprised this thread didn't get any traction back in May

over half of Cleo's RCA output appears to be unavailable to stream on the major platforms....her Carnegie Hall albums, etc

youtube is really a hodge podge of stuff.

another reason to hang on to all those records tapes and cds....

Somebody gave me one of her records, once. I played it a few times but she really was not my style.

She was at every expensive hotel bar in SF in the 1980s. Never saw her, don't know anyone who did. Seeing her music here, I now know that I missed nothing.

Love her! Bumping this thread because I just listened to Dame Cleo's transcendent recording of "On A Clear Day You Can See Forever."

She was fun as Princess Puffer in the original production of The Mystery of Drood on Broadway, and as the Witch in the LA production of Into The Woods.

I love me a lounge act.

by Anonymousreply 10September 29, 2024 8:58 PM

^^ yes! I only know her from that recording, tho.

I was obsessed with this song for a while. Like, would sing it to the mirror, holding a hairbrush. [italic]As an adult!

Any relation to Miss Cleo?

by Anonymousreply 13June 24, 2025 3:33 AM

She was mediocre. I was a star!

1960. Such a rich voice.

She's 97 now.

Dame Cleo Laine is one of the greatest singers of her day. Wonderful on stage in "Mystery of Drood," "Show Boat," and "Into the Woods." I was at her US debut concert at Alice Tully Hall in 1972. She was pretty much an unknown in this country but she scored a huge triumph that night that led directly to Carnegie Hall.

She’s quite a dame!

I only know her from the Muppets. As a kid I thought she looked cool and I loved her afro.

They played a record of her singing Schoenberg's "Pierrot Lunaire" in my music history class.

Incredible voice.
